Can't claim to be a spelunker, but I enjoy caves. I've been in caves in Texas, Missouri and the Mammoth Caves. And Carlsbad has been on my list for a spell. This may be some inspiration!

This is the first video of yours that I have watched. I am glad you got to experience the beauty of CCNP. I have been there 4 times and wish it was more like 40 times. If you ever return to the area, make a reservation to take the Slaughter Canyon cave tour. It is about a 17 mile drive south of the visitor center and then a half mile, ranger led, hike back into the canyon and about 400 ft in elevation. Good hiking boots, or thick soled tennis shoes are highly suggested. Bring water and a flashlight because there are NO lights. It is a real caving experience (no crawling). There are, though, formations which rival Carlsbad 's in size and beauty. Also, at Carlsbad Cavern itself, there is a ranger led, reservation only, trip into the Lower Cave, No lights there also, which is fun to experience (some ladder climbing in and out). Safe travels!

Hi, coming over from JackieBoys channel. Great video and timely too. My family will be visiting the cave this month as part of a national park trip. Just subscribed so I can see more as we also plan to visit White Sands too. I post nature /outdoor content on my channel too.

Hello, and thank you! Make sure to book your tours for the cave now. They sell out quickly.

@@Sue_Cloutier Thanks. We will have our kids with us so we reserved our timed admission, but are going to do the self guided tour.

Thank you for making this video so other can get to see what you saw, and experienced. May it encourage people to want to go visit Carlsbad Caverns themselves. My family and I went to see Carlsbad Caverns in 1968, while we were on one of our summer vacations. I was 11 years old, my two sisters 9 and 11. We took an elevator to the bottom where there were restrooms, then we climbed out of the cavern the way you walked down at the beginning of this video. It was timed so that dusk was just happening, and we all got to sit to watch as a million bats flew right out of the cavern in a very thick swarm, then fill the whole sky trying to hunt down and devour mosquitoes. It was awesome. It took quite a while for all those bats to leave that cavern's exit. Not one seemed to collide with the next one. Try leaving a concert or Disneyworld and have that happen.

That sounds so cool! I wanted to see the bat flight when I was there but the bats had already left for the season. Maybe next year!

@@Sue_Cloutier Small world! I was introduced by a good friend from California to Maine in 1994, soon after she had moved here. I lived here 7 months and loved it. Then I moved back here from Florida in 1998 and have been here ever since. Kennebunk was the first time, and Portland the second. I've also lived in Washington, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin! I wish they had video cameras on cellphones back then.

I agree with you. These caves looked much cooler than Mammoth Caves.

Awesome video, thank you. I visited Carlsbad Caverns, for my third time, about 20 years ago. I finally took the King's Palace tour. Now I have to ask you; did the Ranger turn off the lights and tell the story of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings? How it wasn't just the Ring that drove Gollum mad, it was also the darkness. For over 5 minutes, you get a true glimpse of what it is like to go blind. Curious if that is still done there. Lot's of crazy stuff to learn about Alamagordo (yes you said it right) and White Sands. Don't sleep on the Organs if you're looking for good hiking, If you're lucky you might find some petrified coral.

Thanks for the suggestions! He did turn off the lights but there was no story about Gollum 😅

My mom, my son and my brother did the self guided tour before Thanksgiving. Please, please know what your getting into before taking your below the knee amputee brother in this place. We all got in for free because he is handicapped. I spent most if the walk backwards keeping ny brother from falling on his face. When he finally ran out energy the staff came and rescued him with an electric wheelchair.

250 million years is quite a stretch considering how the great flood created a lot our current landscapes.
