Thanks! Really appreciate the feedback. I had seen other folks had done it but not a good video covering what is involved...so really hope this helps those thinking of doing it. Cheers - Dom (Essential RC)
There's a chrome dome in a foam cone!😀 That is just outstanding. I bet someone melted a few before getting it right. The maiden gonna be great. Get your friends to bring theirs for a flight comparison! AirHammer out!!
Ahh just watched that other video and nearly impulse bought an Avanti right afterward... now this possible upgrade path you're presenting me. Never had a real EDF, only micro ones. Flown some other pretty fast prop planes though.
It would be a big leap to fly a small turbine jet without flying a cheaper EDF jet first but could be done. Jets fly differently. More slippery generally and different approach to take off and landing, use of flaps etc.
I'm converting an Avios MiG17 with an Xicoy X45 turbine, using a Grumania jets twin-wall thrust tube. As it's a requirement for brakes to be fitted on all turbines (no matter how small) at our club I have fitted the JP electromagnetic wheeled brakes. Xicoy state a UAT is quote: "highy recommended" and after speaking to Jeff at Zedjet he agrees so I am using a small 2 ounce UAT. I used BVM 'HEATSHIELD' paint instead of self adhesive foil tape. Looking forward to seeing the flying video and good luck with the maiden flight! I'll subscribe so I don't miss it! 👍 BTW: Motion RC are out of stock of the Avanti S in both the EDF and unpowered versions but this may be my next project for the X45.
In the states it doesn't really work as "getting into turbines". The conversion Avanti jet isn't heavy enough to get your turbine waiver. USA - AMA requires 12lbs dry weight for the aircraft used to get your waiver for turbines.
@@EssentialRC I'm only recently aware of this as I start my own journey into turbines. I've been reading all the regulations, builds, etc.. Cheers to a great video though. I really like this idea and might be something to do after getting my waiver.
You don't have to use all the power! Many others have converted this using 45N engines. When I'm done with this airframe I can drop it in a 90mm EDF airframe and use all the power if I want.
I prefer EDF simply because it's virtually 0 maintenance and nowhere near as expensive. A turbine engine can crash and burn. Not sure about the stress on a foam frame caused by that level of power.
Hello, I also fly with an Avanti foam with a K30. I would like to know if you have any problems with your tank system with the felt diver. I do have a cage tank and yet some wedges. Thank you for your answer
No problem other than the bung not sealing the tank properly but I just put some 5 minute epoxy/micro ballons mix around it from the outside to seal it. The felt clunk works very well. I can run the tank dry. Hope that helps.
Great video... Best video about an EDF to turbine conversion I have seen anywhere. Thank you. I want to build one. Any idea where I can get the HAB Electronics conversion kit or a similar one in the USA?
many thanks for the conversion video. could you supply a link to the turbine fitting kit and jet pipe please. many thanks. i have been on the Hab site and can find no mention of the kit.
My only question would be price to fun ratio. The Turbine alone is the cost of 4 Avanti EDFs brand new, so does it provide that kind of fun and last long enough? I sure wish their were a more cost efficient way to get into these gas turbine. Cheers to you though, that thing looks, sounds, and flies amazing!!!
Hmmm. Me too and it stays on which surprised me. Other engines tend to cool down in bursts of a few seconds. I need to check the manual as what is expected.
When are you coming back out with part 2 of this video. This is the greatest video I've ever seen. Now you made me want to get into turbine conversions. Can't wait to see the maiden.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have an Avanti, but I'm hesitant to go turbine. They say turbine motors can be finicky, I've heard some guys having to return their motors to the factory for repairs or maintenance.
This has to be one of the best and innovative RC videos I have seen to date, question, how many channels do you need for the receiver, can you do it with just 6 channels? Thank you for the great content and look forward to your maiden!!!!

Just wondering how likely it will be that turbines break in crashes? I know the air frame will be destroyed but any idea how resistant the engines are?
I think there is less chance of damage in a foamie compared to a composite model. The engine being surrounded by foam has to be a good thing in an impact. That is unless the fuel tank splits and ignites on impact...in which case there could be a large sticky mess. 😂
Very neat.. Thanks for sharing. A few questions.. I imagine you have to be really careful and limit the wing and control surface loadings in comparison to a composite fuse? What will the power to weight ratio likely be?
If it feels cool now it will be better in the air. This is something on my list. You think why? 300euro plane can be replaced. Keeping the jetengine safe is another🙂. What was the total for the turbine and all?
Looks really cool and all, but at over $1500 for a turbine similar to yours, I think I'll stay with electric motors. I'm obviously in the wrong profession, as I just don't have the free capital for that kind of expenditure.
