  • EDF to TURBINE FOAM JET CONVERSION: STEP BY STEP GUIDE: Freewing Avanti EDF / Kingtech K45G3 | PART 1
Probably the most cost effective way to get into RC turbine jet flying. Take a proven ready to fly EPO foam jet and use a conversion kit to transform it from an electric ducted fan (EDF) to turbine power with a mini 45 Newton / 10 Lbs thrust engine.
    1. Freewing Avanti 80mm EDF ARF Plus (no power system) www.motionrc.eu/products/free...
    2. Kingtech K45G3 turbine engine
    kingtechturbine.lu/KingTech-K...
    3. HAB Electronics conversion kit for Freewing Avanti / K45G3
    www.hab.se/bygghobby/hab-cnc/...
    4. JETI model MAX BEC J-MB
    www.nexusmodels.co.uk/jeti-mo...
    5. Walbro / Zenoah "Winged" Clunk Fuel Filter
    www.davesmotors.com/walbro-125...
    Why do it?
There is no substitute for the sound and smell of a real jet engine. A converted jet may take off slightly heavier than the equivalent EDF powered jet but you will land lighter having burnt all your fuel and therefore at a lower speed and with less risk of damage to the landing gear. Speed in the air is likely to be significantly higher so care should be taken not to exceed the limits of the airframe. A foamie airframe has far less strength than a moulded composite airframe. This is a big minus but use the throttle stick appropriately. Another advantage is flight time. EDF jets of this side with a 6S5000 to 6S6000 lipo pack will get 4-5 minutes flight time. A turbine powered jet will get 7-8 minutes flight time.

It would be a big leap to fly a small turbine jet without flying a cheaper EDF jet first but could be done. Jets fly differently. More slippery generally and different approach to take off and landing, use of flaps etc.

I'm converting an Avios MiG17 with an Xicoy X45 turbine, using a Grumania jets twin-wall thrust tube.
As it's a requirement for brakes to be fitted on all turbines (no matter how small) at our club I have fitted the JP electromagnetic wheeled brakes.
Xicoy state a UAT is quote: "highy recommended" and after speaking to Jeff at Zedjet he agrees so I am using a small 2 ounce UAT. I used BVM 'HEATSHIELD' paint instead of self adhesive foil tape.
Looking forward to seeing the flying video and good luck with the maiden flight! I'll subscribe so I don't miss it! 👍

In the states it doesn't really work as "getting into turbines". The conversion Avanti jet isn't heavy enough to get your turbine waiver. USA - AMA requires 12lbs dry weight for the aircraft used to get your waiver for turbines.

air filter? There is a foreign object debris (FOD) guard integrated into the front of the engine that stops anything going into it. Think you are also talking about the vent which I did mention. It's just a narrow bore tube does doesn't need a filter.

@@EssentialRC Yes I'm talking about on the breather tube that stops the tank from imploding as the fuel is sucked out of the tank.. Had you left the tube inside the fuselage, it wouldn't really be necessary but from how you described it, it sounded like you've put it through a hole to the outside.. Depends where you buy the engine from. Google it.

Wow, those tiny jet engines can get quite expensive

Yes. You can spend 2 to 3 times what I spent on this for the larger engines. So worth it though when I can fly my big jets like this ua-cam.com/video/Zuhh-AWD7fw/v-deo.html

How to turn an excellent plane into a very expensive excellent plane.
I knew turbines were expensive, but about Aud$3500? Wow. That's holiday money! Lol

$3500 AUD for a Turbine you need to shop better. This is a 4Kg thrust turbine. My 14Kg turbines in my Aviation Jets SU35S were less than that each. The 6Kg turbine in my HSD F-16 was only $2200 AUD. And these have in air flameout auto restart. Getting into turbines is not as expensive as you think. I have paid more for my gas engine (Radials) than turbines. Give them a go.

Ok champ .... you have to list manufacturers.... because a 17lb thrust engine I just looked at was £5,000 sterling and I didn't pay that for my first car.... gave half a quarter and a £10 for it 🤣

Turbines are expensive, messy, and finicky. I flew them for years. It's EDF all the way for me now.

They used to be, not so much anymore the technology has caught up in just a few short years. Now with the micros they can auto tune and adjust for changes in atmosphere for flawless performance all by themselves.
