Fishman TriplePlay working with a MidiPlus sound module

  • I've had a number of people ask me whether there is a simple way of using the TriplePlay on stage without taking a computer and the software. This requires a hardware Midi sound module (the bit that makes the sound) instead of the computer. For simple needs, the midi plus does a great job of this. This video shows how. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Dave. I bought a TriplePlay with the foot controller about 4 years ago. Installing the pickup was easy and i was able to hook it up to my iPad just fine but wasn't able to play all the soft synth sounds that i had paid for so I put the whole thing away. I'm a retired guitarist and I own quite a few synths, arrangers and high quality sound modules. Your video is giving me new hope for the TP. It seems to me that using the TP with a MIDI sound module maybe much simpler than with VSTs on my iPad or computer!
    My sound modules have both 5-pin MIDI and USB. Do you recommend going MIDI out from the foot controller to MIDI in on the sound module? It almost looks like you're able to bypass the foot controller altogether. Is that correct? I would be grateful for any help you can provide!

    Thanks for sharing this fun set up. Question : Can the fishman midi system be programed so I could use two different sounds on the midi plus at the same time? Eg A bass sound for my E and A strings and a keyboard sound for the other strings ? I know I read that the midi plus can use two midi devices at the same time .

    • @davidupton8100
      @davidupton8100  Рік тому +1

      Hi, the Fishman can definitely act as 6 midi channels one per string thus allowing you to align different sounds to each channel on the midi sound module. What I can't recall is how you would program the MidiPlus to receive these, from memory it just pools all channels into one. This video is from a few years ago, I use a Roland JV1080 these days which is far more flexible.

    Hi Dave
    Thanks for an amazing video.
    I use FTP from my guitar to my computer. I got some questions.
    1 Do you think the latency is less when you use it with a sound module?
    2 In the computer you can split sounds on different strings. Is it possible with a sound module?

    • @davidupton8100
      @davidupton8100  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for your feedback, that's really appreciated. With regards latency, the latency with the hardware module is so small you can barely tell. My experience with my computer has varied with different computers, different DAWs etc but has always had more latency. From memory, you can split the sounds on different strings but I've not really used this. The challenge is it uses the midi channels 1-6 so again from memory, I think you need a more complex midi module that can run multiple channels on different instruments at once. I believe the Midi-plus didn't support this. I now use it with a Roland JV1080 which does support this and allows me to layer multiple sounds too.

      @@jonashofer4002 I enquired at multiple music shops for a hardware synth and they laughed at me saying VST is the future. So I started researching older Roland kit and the JV1080 was the most used synth on pop songs and films ever, so I found one of these on ebay for £250 and took the risk. Other than being quite complicated to use if you want to do anything clever, it's brilliant. I bought a 1U case for it to sit in and it works a treat. There are videos of my whole rig on my channel. Hi How you moving patch sounds to Triple play module ? and where you get sounds organ acoustic guitar violins ? because free was only synth master.. and even this I can't transport to my guitar triplePlay hardware..
    I have bought pedal and triple play module on guitar.. but now when my usb is in pedal tere is only poly program available an no sound..
    So the pedal is not able to send midi sound through Guitar out cable? and without midi plus I will not get any midi sound out of pedal?

    • @davidupton8100
      @davidupton8100  10 місяців тому +1

      The pedal doesn't generate sound, it purely manages the midi instructions from the guitar pickup, through the USB and out through the Midi ports. You need to attach a midi sound module (hardware) or your computer (software) to this for that to generate the sound. This is why I bought the midi plus so I could get a basic General Midi sound set that was small enough to carry around and use on stage. This is an old video, and I have since bought an old Roland JV1080 off ebay which gives me much more sound choice, but either solution work if you are trying to play live and don't want to have to take a computer with you.

      but now after your explanations
      My options are:
      Have connected laptop or iPad (triple play connect app) at all time or buy hardware midi module or this small one from your videos..
      How then you transport sound of organ or violin to small midi chap box?

      @@wakenwaken3618 It would be good to see that video yes. I think Midi gets confused between the instruction set and the sound generation. I went on the same journey of understanding, Midi does not do sound generation, it is purely and instruction set standard to send triggers and instructions between midi devices. The Fishman device is purely doing this. So yes you can load all your instruction configuration into the guitar device (hardware setting) including patch numbers, banks, octaves etc, but these are to be sent down the midi cable to a device that can generate a note. For example, I have all my hardware patches and settings downloaded into my FTP which I configured to make my Roland switch to the right banks and patches etc. I set my bass patches to be an octave lower and some of my synth patches to be an octave higher. This means I can change patch on the FTP or FC1 and my Roland will do the right thing. But the Roland actually generates the sound. I hope that helps.

      @@davidupton8100 yes, it helped a lot.
      So the instructions and patches you need to set while connected to Roland..
      then Fishman hardware on the Gitar would save those settings to work with the Roland midi without pc…if I got it right..
      will Fishman triple play also remember in those instructions if you want to use given patch with mono or polyphonic or settings how midi Roland should react to string bends etc??
      For example I was using today triple play hardware with usb straight into MacBook and and GarageBand and noticed to have no control over bending string settings.. it was probably flat out controller..
      but maybe if I connect it through the pedalboard would have some control over string sensitivity or bend characteristics?
      Or maybe this could be achieved only in Logic Pro where Fishman will be used as vst with all settings available?
      I know that using laptop and triple connect soft all settings for string sensitivity and types of bends or vibrates are on the board.. but as mentioned above I don’t know how this shouts be utilised with third party soft (garage band ,kontakt Logic Pro ) with use of triple play hardware only or with pedalboard also.. which I have..
      Sorry for so long question but this is so fascinating and complicated subject ;)
      Ps

      @davidupton8100  10 місяців тому

      @@wakenwaken3618 yes if you go into the FTP software and start setting up hardware profiles you'll see everything you can save as instructions on the unit. You set all of these and save them and then there is a menu option to download them all to the FTP guitar unit. The footpedal makes no difference other than to switch between them and tell you their name.
      With regards a channel to help with this, I couldn't find much hence I started doing the videos when I worked it out. I did however join the FTP Facebook group and there are always people to help in there.

Also it can depend on the synth setup, the pickup height, the sensitivity and also setting the pitch bend setting right in each profile. different settings seem to work better or worse depending on synth sound. I’ve also noticed sometimes it’s better to play nearer the bridge. I’ve had it on 3 guitars now with three synth setups 2 hardware and one software and found it takes a fair amount of messing around to get it working well but it can work fairly well. I even got a classical guitar sound working well a few nights ago.
