The noodling at 2:38 with the Electric Piano sound, sounded so awesome, simply because it was using a piano sound yet doing something a piano could never do, and this was mind blowing. This is the midi controller of the future.

I rigged one up with an Axe III patch so I can blend in synth apps on an iPad with my regular guitar signal, both controlled with their own Vol pedal. Path is: Guitar-1/4" out to Axe III Input 1/Fishman wireless out to iPad (via wireless receiver into an iTrack Dock). The iPad sits in the Dock. The stereo outs from the Dock feed stereo inputs in the Axe III. One path is a regular guitar setup (In/Amp/Effects/Cab, etc). The 2nd path is the Synth path (In/Vol/out). Both outputs going to PA and onstage Guitar Cab. Using Audiobus 3 on the iPad to mix Synth apps to feed to the outputs. Because the synth sounds can be glitchy, I blend in a small amount of regular guitar signal to stabilize the notes. So if a glitch occurs, the regular guitar signal sounds the same note and it's not as noticable. So for instance, you could have a nice clean guitar sound w/Chorus and blend in a Fender Rhodes. It sounds complicated, but it's not that bad. Still working out the kinks.

I love my FTP; I use it with MainStage and make efforts to reduce glitchy ghost notes by setting up parameters per song and per use… things like limiting the keyboard layer so it can’t trigger the super high ghost notes, or setting scale parameters when it makes sense to do so. Like you said, you have to think like a keys player with this thing. So, in addition to all of the new virtual instruments, MIDI effects are a new tool in your arsenal as well, and that can create a lot more usability for live performances.

I have one. The Fishman is the best midi guitar solution to date but it’s still not there for live performance yet unless you are an extremely clean player or your audience will tolerate an occasional wrong note. I’ve found it most useful for recording when you need to lay down a bass line when building a song because you can go into the piano roll and fix the clams. For synth chords, remember a keyboard is 10 fingers on keys and a guitar is 6 strings and a pick so the performance is not going to sound the same. It might be easier just to learn some keyboards. EVH and Geddy Lee and John Paul Jones show you don’t have to be a great player to add a lot to the band with keys as your second instrument.
Always enjoy your videos and your playing Leon!

@@LeonToddThis is exactly what I'm hoping to đi with my FTP that I've own for almost 3 years but have given up on. I don't need 100,000 sounds (I also own a dozen keyboards and synth), just enough to have some fun!
I'm gonna get the FTP back out and give it another shot!

I just love the tripleplay as you perhaps can see. I actually enjoyed your video a lot. Remember: if you start having trouble with interference, bite the bullet and put the dongle ON the guitar. Other than that and the dodgy app (Who cares? We all bought it to plug into a DAW anyhow) it's splendid, we all get to Fripp out and have a great time.😊🤘🏾

  • @Eventual420

MIDI is data. The FTP is transferring data, which your DAW receives. Just like recording audio, you may have to specify in your record settings to record MIDI data.
You’ll love it once you record the data, because it can be edited. What you’ll find is the performance nuances are in there. Velocity is a large part of nuance. Timing is another.
Now you don’t need to view and edit data, you can just record the audio, glitches and all, but an edit will let you beat the keyboard player, there will be zero flaws, timing perfect, nuances intact.
Benefits are many. You can audition various instruments in real time, hard pan left and right a mix of instruments, change the BPM, and post process interactively.
As you mentioned many of the instruments are dry, mono, which are my favorite, because I like to add these effects, track them separately.
Discovery will be a constant, these synth libraries are enormous, blending synths is limitless, your ear an excellent guide. Just when you thought you opened a big can of worms with an AxeFX and Eventide, FTP is even bigger. Softsynths are perhaps the best addition to your creative process.
    Keep em coming Leon!

Again a great video Leon, thanks. But how about running this into a midi synth module like f.i. Roland Integra or something, and then into the Axe Fx 3 and mix it (expression pedal and/or 'hold' function) with the guitar sound to add extra ambiance sounds. The sky is the limmit !

Since I learned the concepts behind synth sound design on my GP10 & VG99, I never use the guitar to midi stuff anymore. I find it more satisfying to be able to program & play sounds without all the glitches.
If was going for an instrument sound, like a piano or violin, I'd blend midi with a modelled/analog transient. You get a better feel & way less glitching.

I had a Roland Gtr Synth like your dads. I was lucky enough to find a Roland ready Strat after a few years that had the GK2 pick built in. After two decades I decided to trade and get the new Fishman Triple Play. As standalone, the Fishman works and sounds great. But after hours and hours trying everything I could think of, I still can't get it to work inside Pro Tools! It's no good to me if I cant use it to Record! If you have any insights please let me know. Thanks. Never should have traded my Roland Gtr and GR-20!

I use it EXACTLY the same way in my DAW. You DO need the TP app for the initial setup for sensitivity, mono/poly mode, bending etc. but after that it smooth sailing. Look into the UVI and AIR Music synths/plugins. As long as you play accurately it's pretty amazing.

Indeed. I have never heard any of their soft synths but they sound great. My biggest beef with the FTP is the lack of dedicated hardware. At least for live playing. I don't want their footswitch; I want their wireless tech married to a their own dedicated hardware device. I get that the market for it is probably close to non-existent; but that doesn't mean I can't dare to dream :)

Hi, I really enjoyed your video. I’ve been doing the guitar synthesizer thing since Roland came out with them in the late 70s. I can tell you’re having fun, but that you’re just getting started and a bit overwhelmed with it. First suggestion: you need to go into the software and set up your string sensitivities very carefully. Two: turn off the string bending. Just keep it off, until you are used to playing the system. Three: you’ll get much better response if you play with a guitar pick than with your fingers.

Great Vid Leon, As always, questions please, Lets say you want to play Drop D, do you actually have to detune you low E to the D pitch so its actually tracking a D, or can you leave the E string tuned to E and it converts it to D in the software ?, also if your using it to trigger external soft synths like your doing in the vid, can you still split different area's of the fretboard say have the low E and A playing your own soft synth Bass sound and the top four string playing a Rhodes piano, one more thing is it possible to have the 4th string D be an octave down but the rest of the string in the normal pitch ?
