I just bought a 2025 ram 1500 with the hurricane engine. I also tow a 33ft travel trailer. I was skeptical on towing. You definitely eased my stress. Thank you for this video
Also straight sixes are known to be more reliable and last longer if well made. Those engines are super smooth too because all the cylinders are lined up to work together in perfect harmony. Think of bmw inline 6, they are soo smooth. I am not surprised at all. ram knows they can't mess up with the hurricane engine because remember they had great engines, the 5.7s and 6.4s hemis. From how these trucks sell, they better invest well in that engineering, which I think they did, only time will tell.
The 2500 weighs an additional 2000 pounds over a base 1500, so that is something to consider. Also, you can't disregard the exhaust brake in the Cummins. Regardless, fun video.
If your truck isn't deleted you need to clean your egr valve, egr ports, and intermediate intake from grid heater too the egr valve. Every 50k is what wedo for big rigs. It doesn't take much. You need to get the red rectangular gasket above the grid heater tho. Most of the time the other gaskets and seals don't tear. Also clean the egr crossover tube temp sensor. Doesn't take much to do. A simple metric socket set, adjustable, screwdriver and home depot toothbrush style wire brush.
You nailed it with the comments on quality. I think the big problem with quality among the big three is too many changes too fast and too often. Back in the day even minor changes would take 3-4 yrs , major changes took 7-8 yrs
Great point, these manufactures pushing moves to quickly...Toyota only seems to update trucks and powertrains every 10+ years! and they are still struggling making a reliable motor.

Almost the same interior for years etc etc know I'd te new bla bla bla and it comes with the new bla bla bla matted to the new audio sustem with the new camera system bla bla bla , like .. come down... I try to watch many towing videos, and it's sad how the main topics are sorely missed. Power is easy, and more convenient if you keep within the manufacturer's recommended weights. Safety is the key. RV's should be kept to around 65mph, and while most 1/2 ton will pull some of the largest bumper pull units, the concern is the ability to stop quickly or anchor in cross winds. A HD will give you that extra 1 to 2000lbs of extra vehicle weight over a 1/2 ton, making it that much more difficult for the RV to push the tow.
Just pulled my 34 airstream loaded with my 2020 3.0 ecodiesel through Michigan, max 70mph I averaged 12.5 mpg. Similar weight trailer, probably more aerodynamic. 1500 much lighter. Not bad for the hurricane.
Drive the 3.0L Duramax. I have two and they're the nicest driving vehicle I've ever driven. I also have a 2024 F350 power stroke. The GM is my favorite.
If its true that the v8 hemi is gone that guy who made that choice to replace it with this and not just make ot an option should be fired immediately. That hemi v8 is a staple!
2018 Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins, pulling a Rockwood Ultralight 2304DS, loaded I'm around 6,000 lbs. At 75, I also get around 9 mpg and I'm disappointed too. As a current owner of a 1996 12v 5 speed, and also I've owned a 2003 and 2006 2500 Ram, those got much better fuel mileage than my 2018, typically around 12-14 as you said depending on speed, wind, etc. I'm really glad you made this video because I don't know how much longer I'm going to stick with diesel given the lack of fuel mileage I see on my 2018. I'd like to see how these compare going through hills and mountains while towing. I'm holding out until the Hurricanes are out for a few years before I make my move. I was really happy to see these, I'm a big fan of straight 6's, not just in diesel but I've also owned a bunch of Jeeps, and my first car was a 1956 Chevy with a 235 straight 6. They are just so inherently smooth and torquey. I can't wait to see the H.O. version of the Hurricane.
Thank you for your comments! I love the cummins great engine, just seems to get much less mpgs than my powerstroke got. But has also been low maintenance! My hurricane comes soon!
Love the idea of the Hurricane for that type of application. However I can almost guarantee if you scaled that truck he would have been over payload by a fair margin. How much will that matter short/long term hard to say, but I played that game and it just made me uneasy enough that I wound up going HD. The peace of mind is super nice regardless of any mileage disadvantages and size...just some food for thought anyway. Happy camping!
Jesus im so sick of everything revolving around "the sound" of an engine in every forum. Its so dumb. More power, better fuel efficiency, better reliabilty and LESS MONEY is all that should matter.
Me too I have a 2016 3500 and tow a 36 foot 5th wheel. Combined weight 22,200. I get 11 and 12 but stay around 65. Many ST rated trailer tires are only rated for 65. The wind will kill fuel millage about that speed.
I have a 3500 DRW with a 32ft toy hauler. I can get between 10-12 on the flats all day long...but the truck is stock height and has the dinky 17 inch wheels. Lifting a tow vehicle and adding larger wheels and tires kill mpg. My wife's Jeep went from 22mpg on the highway to 16mpg after we did the Mopar lift and put 34s on it.
I need to do this test with my 97 ram 1500 then we can track how much they’ve improved, I think it would be cool for a company like ram to bring back the old 2nd gen trucks maybe like a 1500 with the 5.9 and a 2500 with the v10 and put them at a 25k-30k price point for guys who are stating businesses or just people who want a full size truck but can’t afford it but need the power and capacity of a full size truck this would probably sell very well right now
Hemi tick is the manifold bolts snapping. Hemi eats water pumps. And the lifter problems wipe out the cam, particularly with lots of idling and long oil change intervals. And it happens MDS or not. It's not bulletproof. I have one right now.
Looking to upgrade my 2020 f150 Coyote and been debating between a diesel and either the Ford Twin Turbo v6 and the Hurricane. I am curious how the smaller trucks will handle the hills in Wisconsin. I pull a rather large Tritoon boat.
My 23 hemi runs hot, fan comes on when it should not, and the oil pressure on initial startup is low causing the truck to have a bit weird start, 6000kms on it. Next oil change switching to 5w30
So, my 2024 Duramax compared to my 2024 Ram Cummins, the Ram is getting 1.5 mpg better on average, towing the same trailer and doing the same kind of driving. I track it with the Fuelly app.

When you taking the consideration at half ton Chevy pick ups in the 60s and 70s,80's only got 9 to 10 miles per gallon not towing nothing, towing a trailer plus a new truck at 10 miles of a gallon I think is good. Even for a gasser.
I just towed a trailer nearly identical to your passport with 4 people, in my 2016 ram 1500 across country. I averaged 8mpg with 90 percent interstate travel. The cross wimd through the plain states hurt the fuel economy the most. When there was no wind I would get around 9.5mpg. Been looking at upgrading trucks but 2500 doesnt seem worth it.
Too many variables to have an accurate comparison. The trailers are not the same. The Ram 2500 has been modified with bigger and heavier wheels. Also, has the front suspension been leveled? If so, the impact on aerodynamics makes efficiency worse. Also, I have older 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins. I don’t tow faster than 65 mph due the drastic drop in mileage going 70-75 mph. Plus, the faster speeds put more heat into the trailer tires and can increase the risk of tire blowouts.
A great comment and thank you for sharing. A lot of truth in what you’re saying. We do plan on doing a trailer swap at some point to get more comparison vs the Hurricane!
Which of the two will still be on the road towing after 200k miles? We have a 2008 Dodge RAM 3500 6.7 towing a 37.5 foot 10,000 pound bumper pull travel trailer and we average 14mpg at 62mpg.

Why do you think the 2500 still has the relatively tame (hp/torque) 6.4 hemi and not one of the turbos? Duty cycle. These turbos are fine in a charger or minivan but you won't catch me towing heavy/often with one of those whizzers. GM's v8's are absolutely terrible, read the forums, they are blowing out lifters sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same truck. The coyote is definitely better than GM's v8s, but it has had issues with cam phasers and the cylinder liners and now they have an MDS system as well, time will tell. The hemi is a known quantity, it gets broken manifolds (so do the other v8's by the way), and occasionally lifter failure which can be mitigated by running premium oils and changing it every 5k. My hemi isn't going anywhere that's for certain. Parts are cheap and abundant, tuners are everywhere, and if I really wanted more power there is all kinds of support for getting real ("not boosted") power out of these when you build them right.
I love the Hemis, but these inline 6 motors are better in many ways. I won't be towing much so I'm not worried. Good to see you know to change your oil early. Baruk Hashem.
@@CTECH-REVIEW They are NOT interested in boosted HD trucks. Why do you think Ford spent all that money on a 7.3 and 6.8 when the eco boosts put out similar torque and they had it on the shelf for a decade waiting to be used? That little 3.0 inline 6 is a passenger car engine, not a heavy duty engine. It cannot handle the duty cycle/abuse of an HD truck. And yes, note that the 5.7 hemi DID end up in the Ram 2500 as the base engine for years. It did fine, other than being down a little on power.
GM is putting their gas 4 cylinder Turbomax in the 1500s. They also warranty them to 100k miles. IMO a well engineered engine can handle what it is rated for.
@@Lq32332 It's a base engine in the 1500, and it tows very poorly vs the 5.3 in the same truck, even with the 5.3 having much less torque. See "getty adventures" channel for some very eye opening reviews on these 2 engines, he did them just this past month.
A jacked up 4x4 with mud tires, mud guards and big 'ol donkey dick mirrors (hanging out in the wind like air brakes) is not exactly an efficient tow vehicle.
Nice comparison BUT still would NEVER own a full size pickup with a tiny 3.0 overworked boosted 6 banger. Junk! Ram, please give us a turbo V8 Hemi!!!! BTW, my Ram 6.4 Hemi gets 9.2 mpgs towing my RV.
Pls get serious. Those 2 trailers are VERY DIFFERENT. The trailer pulled behind the Cummins has AT LEAST 20% greater frontal area, and at goofy high speeds (>65 towing 7000-8000) makes a massive difference. And then there’s the 33-35” tires and massive wheels on the Cummins that ARE an economy penalty. Please either use THE SAME TRAILER and comparable equipped trucks if you REALLY want to compare fuel efficiency.
Thank you for your comment and for watching. There is some difference in the Trailers for sure we plan to do another trip in the future and use the same trailer.!
Feel free to check out the Godzilla versus Cummins towing review video that use the same trailer. ua-cam.com/video/tF1-Bvcqz-E/v-deo.htmlsi=KCNOguedBsKEtLPa
Coyote over Hemi for reliability??? Good video till you said that!!! P.S. anybody that tows a 30ft + camper at or over 70MPH knows nothing about towing vs safety and and worrying about MPG!!!
American diesel fuel in gthe USA is awful. The European fuel has R-30 in it. Thr poor performance of the CP-4 fuel pump in the USA is proof! I run Hot Shots Secret EDT in my diesels. The fuel economy is better, along with smoother running and a better sound. We get 22mpg at 60mph carrying a Four Wheel Camper. When we tow our Jeep JLU behind it, the economy drops to 17mpg.
The reason your not getting 11 mpg for n the Cummins is your driving to damned fast! Slow down and you’ll get considerably better. 73mph pulling a giant brick? You’d go broke in the RV transportation business.

I get a little better mpg with my TRX towing my 4000# camper. Avg around 11.5 70mph
Thats impressive! TRX is a beast!
It seems like ford , GM or ram are interested in gas boosted options for hd trucks
A jacked up 4x4 with mud tires, mud guards and big 'ol donkey dick mirrors (hanging out in the wind like air brakes) is not exactly an efficient tow vehicle.
very very true!
Turbo hemi would be awesome! That is great fuel economy out of your 6.4! Nice work
Junk!!!
You so smart!!!!!!
You can get fuel mileage just drive slower.
That is true! Thanks for watching!
That raptor was so illegal towing that heavy. It’s all fun and games until an accident and a lawyer eats you up for towing over capacity.
I will take a ram 2500 over a 150/1500 any day.
Roger that! Thanks for watching.
Oversized tires, and 70+ mph and complaining about gas mileage 😂
touche!
Coyote over Hemi for reliability??? Good video till you said that!!! P.S. anybody that tows a 30ft + camper at or over 70MPH knows nothing about towing vs safety and and worrying about MPG!!!
Thanks for watching!
Very impressive numbers!
🎉
The reason your not getting 11 mpg for n the Cummins is your driving to damned fast! Slow down and you’ll get considerably better. 73mph pulling a giant brick? You’d go broke in the RV transportation business.
Thanks for the comment. I am sure you are right about the speed!
Not very safety conscious… towing at 75 … come on
Mostly 68-70 but for a few spots I hit 75. Thanks for watching!
Suck less as a driver
