Great content. If you haven’t already, before your next tow you can go to settings, select air suspension, select jack mode, be on level ground then setup your hitch and sway bars to your trailer. Once you get moving the air suspension will self adjust to maintain a level ride. Towed 640mi ~ 6800lbs
My F150 KING RANCH has 1374 of payload, it’s a 2022 eco boost can run a 30 amp rv off of it! 7200 watts. More power than you need.
my 2023 F150 max tow with 3.5 has a 1795 payload
Should have gone with the F150 Lightning. Much better driver.
I said eco boost but in reality it’s a powerboost 3.5 turbo
@@kelviskelvis7140 not interested in the electric vehicles just like I’m it a democrat, look at the mess we as a country are in!
The airride can be put into mode to hook up the trailer.
But, Its easier to shut the truck off then hook up the trailer. Adjust the weight distribution system to regain a level appearance. Then start the truck and the airride will bring the truck back to normal ride height.
And won't that change or offset what you just previously made level with your weight distribution hitch 🤔
@@Hundert1 not if you know how to properly set up the weight distribution hitch.
@Itsa_Mea I agree. But if the air suspension is at it's lowest also known as entry/exit level, and the engine off, then you set everything level, then when you turn it on the truck comes up to the next level which in my 2022 Ram is the aero level mode. The air suspension will not remain in the lowest entry/exit level above about 15-20mph. Won't that change things so the truck and trailer are no longer level? Or will the distribution hitch force the truck lower to keep everything level? Thank you 😊
Typically when WD set right, front fender height is close to unladen height, but rear height is still low vs unladen part of hitch weight is carried on rear axle too). Turn on a truck with height adjusting air suspension and, if it lift’s the rear, it will reduce some of the WD effect. Guess you can always go to scales and verify if front axle downforce (weight) is comparable to unladen.
Messy. Best if you can just shut off auto adjustment for when using WD to get redistribution of hitch weight added.
@Itsa_Mea Sounds good to me. Keep it simple and cheaper. At least, that's what advancement, education, technology, and engineering is supposed to do. 💙🌲🌾
great content! love the emphasis on payload capcity versus towing capacity. we tow a very similar sized trailer with our ram 1500, ours ram is a lower spec with a payload of 1460 lbs. we have towed thousands of miles with our combo, 30,000 miles probably and the ram is very capable.
i sure hope that the larger tow mirrors are still available, ours has the foldout elephant ears
i like the concept of a straight six versus a v6. one day all modern vehicles will need timing chain service/replacement and should be much simpler on a straight 6 with it's 2 cams versus 4 of a v6. of course our pushrod hemi will probably never need that!
The Ram offers more for the money in my opinion. The air bag suspension and the interior is in a class of its own. I also like the fact that the Ram seems more modest exterior wise. I suppose we’ll have to see if the hurricane has similar reliability to the eco boost.
This was a great video btw JD.
That motor is already have tons of problems.... been in the jeep for almost 2 yrs
@@atg1338 there have been growing pains but nothing catastrophic like you see with Toyotas V6 twin turbo. We will just have to wait and see what they work out over the next few years. Until then it’s all covered under warranty.
Thanks for taking a ride in less than ideal circumstances-gives a really good example of what the real world can throw at you. The lack of payloads are wild (and I’m assuming they have always been low and people just ignored them). My 4Runner payload is 900ish
That's a nice home with a great garage set up! Great overview of an amazing truck. The RAM truck tows better than GM and Ford for our business and has also had the lowest maintenance costs overall. We tow all sorts of trailers with different weights. They have really done a nice job on the RAM truck overall, I'm super impressed as a business owner.
My limited Ram 1500 towed my Imagine 2500RL like crap. It was pushing the limits of the truck. So now I have an F350 and a Brinkley Z3100. You have to disable your airbags when you hitch. Set it to jack mod in the settings and your bags won't move when hitching and unhitching.
I run the same set up!
The durability of the new twin turbo is my concern and it is a big concern… the EPA has outlived its usefulness and now generates costs and costs with an extremely diminished return… I was in my 20’s when the EPA was created and it was much needed then… now
I drove a Ram 1500, non 4x4 from California to Nebraska and back pulling a large U-haul trailer that was overloaded with a lot of heavy stuff. The truck road beautifully and couldn’t even tell I was towing anything even though the trek up through Colorado was pretty high and extreme heavy snow. In fact, I was one of the very few that dared to drive through the snow storm because I’m an idiot that has never lived where it snows and was certain I could do it, until I slid off the road. Anyway, I liked everything about the truck, especially the fact that at the time it was cheaper than a comparable GM or Ford. I have owned Dodge product in the past and had nothing but problems, but the newer Ram trucks are not the old Dodge! The interior comfort, looks and amenities were a step above GM and Ford, but these brands may have up’d their game over the past couple years. I wouldn’t buy a GM unless the price is right, but it would be difficult to choose between Ford and the Ram.
Only 1100 pounds of payload is wild. My wife's old Pilot had almost 1000.
My Civic has a payload of 850 lbs.
@@murrkem8239 I have a 2020 ram limited with a payload of 1800
Great video! I don't prefer an "automatic" check of the trailer lights. I do a visual inspection for a piece of mind. As a Ford owner, I do wish Ford offered air bags, something I give Ram a thumbs up.
Good video, truck seemed to do well under the conditions. One would think there would be some instructions on using weight distribution with the air bags in the user’s manual. There is an older video circulating done by a channel called “Fastway Trailer” where they used wheel scales under every wheel (truck & trailer) and displayed the effects of weight distribution vs air bags. It’s done well and certainly worth watching. The air bags without weight distribution were essentially lifting the truck body at the rear axle “balance pivot point” or fulcrum which in turn lifted weight off the front axle. There were other very surprising effects on the trailer axle weights too. It looked level with the air bags but with some very undesirable effects.
hey this is charles im subed and i love watching ur videos
I would be very happy to hear what you determined to do with the Ram’s air suspension and B&W Continuum. I feel like I’m endlessly chasing the setup in my ‘22 Ram 1500 4x4 Limited 3.0 Ecodiesel.
Both are light...2500HD 6.7 10 speed duramax and it tows like a champ
Never heard of the 6.7 Duramax 😄
6.6. Sorry but so glad u noticed
Duh it's a 3/4 ton! What a 🤡
I think the inline six made by every US manufacturer should never have gone away, but the EPA is too powerful. I always remember the Ford 300 six and they Chevy 236 being great power plants for 1/2 ton work trucks. Glad to see one back in running again, even if Fiat....
The old Chrysler slant 6 was another good one. It was used in heavy equipment and farm machinery as well.
@@bradnickel6685 the ford 300 put out 150hp and 260 lb ft in its final years. Even joe Biden knows that’s not much power
@@bradnickel6685 luckily Republicans just did some massive damage on the front of EPA’s power
@5:17, the flip ups aren't available anymore from RAM, they have a new dedicated tow mirror that looks like everyone else's now. That was one of the changes in the last couple of years, so no more Moose Antlers/Ears for Ram trucks. The parts shortages still going on are kinda nuts, Tim of Pickup and SUV Talk's new RHO won't have the new onboard power yet, as a result of the parts just not being available.
At anytime did you use the cruise control while you were towing? If so how did it do? Nice video, good job, enjoyed it.
Search up Anderson hitches and how to use a wdh with the 4 corner air suspension.
2 people a dog and the hitch and the truck is at payload. You normally say not enough truck for 6500#.
6,500 is more than you would recommend for a truck like that? Truck with that air ride could likely do double. My 2020 limited 3.92 is rated for a little over 11k
To focused on towing and not payload capacity...
How smooth is the six cylinder
Smooth when driving over 10mph. It's a little odd and jerky below that.
Than you very much

Seems like you need to be an engineer to figure this out. Is there a universal guide or an app that will help?
Quite a few actual.
Where’s the next video of this trailer?
Love the truck but that center screen looks a little intimidating, Don’t know if I would like that, quess i would have to drive one and get a closer look at it .
@@npfd568rc I have a 22 Laramie. Didn’t want the big screen but ended up with one anyway. It didn’t take long to get used to it. Now when I’m in one of my kids Rams with the small screen, the dash looks too busy with all the analog dials & buttons.
@@npfd568rc the ram interiors and vertical screen are down right tacky, if I wanted a tablet screwed to the dash I would do it myself and that payload is a complete joke
Nice set up but I think it would fail in hill’s.
what were the MPG on highway ?
What’s the stand the trailer is on?
Looks like one of those Andersen Trailer Jack Block.
The cargo capacity is near criminal.
Facts. My loaded LT3 2005 silverado has 1286. (Yes I know there are a ton of features that didnt exist back then) but still.
All 1500s based on tow ratings needs like 2klbs payload or even 2500 to make it actually usable in a crew cab format in my opinion.
@@EngineeringGoneWrong ultimately it’s the responsibility of the owner to read and understand the manual and the trucks capabilities. But to limit a truck to such a low payload while advertising high tow ratings is putting buyers in a bad position
It's Cargo Capacity is 1193#s. It is a1500, known as a Half Ton truck. A half ton is 1000#s. It's in reality right in line.
@@Itsa_Mea it’s not 1970.
@Itsa_Mea you're correct, however a modern half ton is advertised to do MUCH more then what the original intent of a half ton was back in the day..(ie 50s and 60s for ex). Everything being crew cab now makes it such that I almost think of it as a "half ton" of cargo and an allotment of a half ton for the cabin.
These new Ram/ Fiats are now classified as imports. So it’s not shocking
They are built in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Not sure where you live, but I'm guessing it's not an import for you.
@@steinwaymodelb is that the plant Fiat laid off 199 workers in April?
@@TheGreatestShowman69 the 1500 is NOT an import. Get over it. Stellantis is the parent company. They had the biggest piggy bank.
@@Itsa_Mea Dude it’s a Fiat with a “RAM” slapped on it 😂 There is a reason it’s the least selling truck. Ford outsells Ram 2:1 for a reason and even Chevy another 100,000 units more over last year.
@@TheGreatestShowman69 oh you're one of those guys. Have a great night.
Payload makes it a nice lifestyle vehicle, not a truck.
I’d choose domestic (GMC) over import (Ram/Fiat)
I would bet most every part on the gmc was not made here.
The RAM is made in the Sterling Heights Assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, United States.
@@Itsa_Mea it’s made there or put together there. The United States makes very few things anymore.
@@nathanurick8320 well aware. My comment is for the OP who apparently thinks RAM 1500s are built out of this country.
