The V8 were going away in cars not trucks. 2.2 then 2.5 turbo engines that eventually replaced with larger more fuel efficient V6’s. Then the V8 options came back. See a pattern here?
The turbo engines were used because they made more power than their anemic V6 and even V8 counterparts in the 80's. Not sure that efficiency was part of that formula. A friend has one at work and has had rear end issues out of his. Have you seen any issues? I was looking at one but with his experience (yes I know that is very antidotal) I had my reservations. We work in forestry and do tow and run back roads a lot....
@ I have had mine two years and 51,000 miles, no issues. I am a contractor and pull heavy trailers each week. It is the most powerful and most reliable truck I have ever owned. I think you would be fine getting one.
The 3.0 SST SO basically embarrasses the 3.5ho, This is a Rebel model with alot of options weighs about 5 or 600 lb more than the base model ford that it's being compared to. Its GY tires are in the mud terrain category, and that's why it's having the traction issues whichis still amazing tbh. But still got better mileage pushing more weight. The 3.0 SST is just a whole other level. And that's why people have to compare the standard output to the output.
One thing to consider, and I don’t know Jack compared to you… but I own a 2025 ram rebel 1500 and my fuel economy for it is around 17 five and that’s being very nice with the throttle. The other day I had to bring my truck in for them to install the bed divider and they gave me a 2025 ram bighorn as a loaner, same engine, of course. I was able to go hard on that engine flooring it, testing out 0 to 60 on it And with doing all that I still got fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon now when I was driving normal with it, I was getting closer to 21 miles per gallon so clearly the difference is the lift in the rebel as well as maybe the tire package so if you compare that Style 2025 1500 RAM with the eco-boost you might have different results. And I mean, I really have to baby my rebel to get 17.5 miles per gallon.
Agreed, there are differences but this truck was availible and I wanted to see how it worked. I will do this test again with a "normal" ram 1500 with 3.55 gears to see how much difference it makes
I think your Rebel must have the 3.92 differential, and that would make your mileage less as most of the "Limited" models have the higher gears like 3.23 which would get better MPG
@@wayneowen5864 Interesting. I wonder if that big horn had 3.55. I have to bring it in one more time, I will take a look and test again. I''ll followup on here.
Nice review Alex! I've been towing quite a bit with my 25' Laramie. I've noticed a big difference running 91+ octane. What were you running for your test?
I don’t understand the purpose of going to a smaller displacement engine for fuel efficiency when it’s worse than the V8 it replaced. My 2500 Ram HD with the 6.4 Hemi will average between 10 and 12 mpg when towing about 10,000 lbs, and usually anywhere from 10 to 15 mpg unloaded. It has 3:73 gears, and as you stated with the Hurricane, shifting is seamless. I agree that the ZF 8 is the best transmission you can get.
The purpose is to get better mileage numbers when not towing. Most owners spend little time towing things. And, the EPA mileage ratings don’t tow anything.
This is a great video. And thank you for sharing. It seems like on paper, The intent is to have a smaller block Engine for fuel economy yet When you load these engines or rev these engines, they burn close to a V8...
Ecoboost is king ! I think you should do the 3.5 Ecoboost with 3.73s vs. the h.o hurricane with 3.92s . And we still need to see a hybrid f150 test as well .
Would be curious to see the Tundra 3.5 on your towing loop. Got it a few a months ago to replace 12 F-150 5.0 that I loved but was getting rusty. At first the Tundra was fine but the longer I own it, the more I miss the Coyote. I notice on mine surging while cruising 30-50 mph. It also a bit annoying at starts with the classic turbo nothing then suddenly hard boost, feels like most modern turbos have that better sorted. Great reviews with real substance.
The tundra has some TSB's for Turbo lag I believe because of poor tuning. You might check with your dealer about a reflash. Although, if you only got it a few months ago then I would think it would already have it.
Have you used 91 premium gas or 87 in your 3L Hurricane testing? I recently traded-in my F150 / 3.5L Ecoboost with a 2500HD / 6.2L (gas, 10 speeds). Towing my 29'/6500 lbs TT with the F150, I was getting 10 mpg using 87, and 12 mpg using 91. I am getting now around 9.5 mpg with the 6.2L on the 2500, using 87. I guess that using regular or premium gas will also impact the mpg on the 3L Hurricane.
Great review. The Rebels always seem to get worse mpg then the standard Rams. The AT tires treads and weight. Also less aero on the front end. I do love the look though
I think most REBEL's have the Lower gear ratios, like 3.92:1 compared to the "LIMITED's 3.55:1 or 3.23:1 ratios". The 3.92:1 is much better for towing!
I bought a ram 5.7 new in 2015. Coming from a 6.0 Silverado 2500. Always V8 I’d never buy a 6 banger……4 years later and a totaled ram from deer I’m all In on the eb 3.5 I pull a 7x14 X tall enclosed daily .4-7k lbs I always see 9-12 mpg . If they could just get the sound right.
No. This is the standard output hurricane at 469 lb feet of torque. The high output is 521 lb ft. So 178 per liter? Thats higher than the powerstroke and the gm 2.7
@@christopherjb274 that’s what the video is about, the standard output. Not the HO. So, as I stated, the 2.7 has more torque per liter than this engine.
Sure, fair enough...but regardless i understood that point in this video to be talking about which engine makes more power per liter. From what i can tell its either the HO i6 hurricane or the powerstroke.
I daily a 5.7 and I would have no issue buying a hurricane after 3 years of being in the Ram. The Hemi is fine but Stellantis never bothered to fix the lifter issues or the exhaust manifold bolts breaking.
The turbo 6 cylinders are the way to go in these half tonnes. Just maintain them well as they do require a little more attention. I have a 2.7 EB with 3.31 rear and it gets just about the same mileage my small 2.0 crossover did , highway and daily driving around town. Can’t complain one bit, and I still have the option to tow.
@@joeblow5037 That problem was eliminated in 2019, different exhaust manifolds using more bolts. Exhaust manifold leaks are common with GM V8's and the 5.7 Hemi.
The turbo engines probably have to spend a lot more time in power enrichment while pulling, they also probably run richer under boost than a NA engine,
This is exactly why. My 2014 3.5L Ecoboost would start to go rich if I was using more than 325 ft-lbs. I could get around it by downshifting and using more RPM, but it wasnt worth it. I'd rather use the torque and enjoy the quiet, smooth pulling experience than save 1 mpg I swapped my Ecoboost for a Toyota 5.7L and the 5.7L just never feels like it has any reserve power. Its always on the cusp of a downshift and never feels like you can rolling into the throttle and expect to surge forwards without it dropping 2 gears like the Ecoboost did. If I could swap my Ecoboost into my Land Cruiser, I would.
@ I have an 01 2500hd with 6.0 I built stock it got 9-10 mpg, now it gets 11.5-12, 14 interstate, that doesn’t sound like much but the engine has already paid for itself almost twice in fuel economy, pulling my John deer 5045 with loader and bush hog, never gets worse that 7.5 mpg, on my next motor I think I can do even better, I’m very hard on vehicles, and I’m afraid anything that’s new won’t hold up to my abuse 😂
Enjoyed this review as always. I believe the Tundra hybrid at 583 ft/lbs out of a 3.4 (or 3.5, depending who's counting) is the champ for 1/2 tons, for torque per litre. 435 hp is also nice. I'm looking forward to towing with this. Yes my 2014 eco diesel is history - however when towing my 35' travel trailer (about 9k lbs) over the past number of years it never exceeded the low 20's l/100km. Sadly I expect my Tundra will be closer to Hurricane / eco boost territory.
Technically the added power is coming from an electric motor hooked to the back of the engine not directly from displacement. which is why I didn't include the hybrid trucks but I am very interested to see how those trucks tow!
I haven't driven a newer RAM with the 8 speed ZF but with the 5 speed and 8 speed in the Cherokees I get way better fuel mileage with tow/haul mode disabled.
Hey Alex, can you do a video on your PW again? I've heard that you can't tune and or do any engine performance upgrades to the 6.4 hemi cause it's already maxed out in power. Is that true?
If you get a chance you might want to take a look at the F150 Powerboost. They are very impressive when it comes to power when comparing to the current offerings in the market place for pickup trucks.
I am marveled that you are towing with a turbo 3.0 that while towing gets the milage it does. I am going to interject that my rig with 4.30's in the ass end, pulling with a heaver truck and heaver camper with a 7.3 gas still has about a 4 or so MPG better advantage. Now I am sure when not under load it gets better than I do, but come on, smaller engines are supposed to be more fuel efficient right?
The small engine will need to turn more rpm to make power for towing, and when into boost it will need to add more fuel to keep the engine happy. That’s mainly why they’ll get so much worse when towing but do better when driving just the truck.
we will keep our 5.7 for a couple more years(or more), it's has well over 50,000 km of towing 7000 lbs, never missed a beat! what grade of fuel are all these trucks using? our 5.7 is supposed to use mid grade but we have always used regular
Hi Alex, did you provide final economy calculation based on actual pump gas consumption and not just the screen estimates? I know you usually finalize the number at the pump. And it doesn’t surprise me on the numbers, although I was honestly hoping for much better towing economy result for the 3.0SST. Just to see Ram take a big advantage in one segment. Oh well. Better get a V8 before all gone. So when it comes to turbo economy in towing, 2.7eb >3.0SST >3.5eb. And reverse order in power and torque figures. Which all makes sense. Still doesn’t compare to V8 gas for towing economy. And of course diesel is still king. Plans to expand into 2500’s gas and diesel powered rigs? I think the Hemi 6.4 or Duramax 6.6 might get better fuel economy than the 3.5eb. The Ford 7.3 would be the worst compared to all the gas options (economy). And the Hd diesel beats them all. But not as much as before the EPA chocked the diesel power plants. Blah
I think the reason ram uses higher pressure is because it means they can get the fuel into the cylinder faster with less chance of knock. If you can spray the fuel closer to the spark plug firing, it wont be be exposed to the cylinder heat and pressure as long. the extra 6 port injectors, like the 3.5L Ecoboost has, does not fix that. Then the fuel is sitting in the cylinder during the entire intake and compression stroke.
Sort of but not really, the added power comes from the electric motor strapped behind the engine. so the added power over the 3.5L ecoboost isn't actually coming from the displacement of the engine. if that makes sense. thats why I didn't include it.
6.7 mpg is 16% better than the 3.5. I really think the AT/MT tires zapped another 5%. It certainly did when I went to ATs on my RAM. That would put it at around 7 mpg. Over a thousand miles,6.7 mpg would equate to about $70 of fuel at $3 a gallon.
Greetings Alex. Good job and I think that engine 3.0 lts can be reliable ... I LIKE THE HURRICANE ENGINE! I begin to convince myself. I hope it's not a mistake! Thank you Alex! ABRAZOTE desde CDMX; México! 😮😂😊
Please leave the info graphics displayed for a longer time, its a pain to pause the tv. Better yet, find a way to leave them displayed the whole time in a corner somewhere
Finally Ram gets a reliable transmission and surprise it’s not their own. You gotta love how manufacturers talk about fuel economy on these smaller engines. These engines are gonna be thirsty at these power outputs even at smaller displacements.
Interesting because the SO engine is reliably out accelerating the ecoboost including the powerboost and 3.5 raptor unloaded. Must have been the tire spin that hurt it here.
As an owner of a 2016 F150 3.5 eco boost and a 2023 Ram Rebel with 5.7L, they get almost the exact same fuel milage towing and normal driving and the Ram sounds 10x better. I'll take the 5.7 any day.
The front of that trailer looks like the morning after a bar fight. Now this thing likes 3600 rpm. The gearing accounts for that. The damn thing better be able to live at 3600 rpm for extended periods lol.
The rpm is based on the gearing. The 3.55 would tromp the 3.31. Haha there are tons of issues with the 8spds. More torque will just bring them out faster. The "A" plate clutch assembly flex under heavy load and causes a flutter in 7th and 8th gear, aso causes slow starts, torque converter clutch pack is of poor design, has issues when used to tow heavy, soft lockup that has been known to cause rpm flares when towing heavy, the impeller hub has also been known to break(splines into the pump) these failure are all know to the soft torque output of the 5.7 hemi throing another 70lbft(2000rpm sooner) and 113lbft(HO) with show the weak point even faster.
@okcmoparguy724 most people don't tow heavy with their trucks. Are you going to tell me ther are near ZERO lifter failures too? I know a mechanic that had the lifter issue with his 300C and then a week later was doing his Ram. His brother did his 6 moths after that. He traded to a 2021 Laramie longhorn and at 80k it needed lifters and a cam too.

SOON!! Its on the top of list. Hemi towing and fuel economy loop
Nice video. I will stick with my F150 Powerboost. 19 city and 23 Highway. Towing mpg depends on the trailer, but about 10mpg most of the time towing.
Ditto here!
The powerboost would be very cool to tow with. probably a killer set up
A friend has one at work and has had rear end issues out of his.
This is my first time visiting this channel. I'm very impressed with how well this video was put together. Better than anything esle out thier.
Been waiting for this one!
I was excited to get this truck hooked up to my trailer
Just finished the video and I’m impressed. I wonder how much better the HO would be. Do you plan on getting one of those?
@TheGettyAdventures yes really want to see the 3.5 ecoboost go up against the high output hurricane
Wow what a review! Subscribed!
I’m giving it a try I’m leasing though. I’ve had only Hemi until now
I don’t understand the purpose of going to a smaller displacement engine for fuel efficiency when it’s worse than the V8 it replaced.
That's pretty good towing MPG. What transmission do you have if you don't mind me asking?
@@joerapo he has the ZF8 he just said that plus that's what comes with that truck.
@@Qugie He said the ZF8 is the best transmission you can get NOT that he has the ZF 8.
It’s all about the epa. Lower emissions and slightly better fuel economy without a load. EPA doesn’t care about fuel economy when towing.
I'll take that ZF8 speed anyway over Fords 10 speed. I have both, and I've never had an issue with the 8. The 10 has been in 3 times in 75k miles
Ecoboost is king ! I think you should do the 3.5 Ecoboost with 3.73s vs. the h.o hurricane with 3.92s . And we still need to see a hybrid f150 test as well .
I’ll be curious how the 5.7 hemi will perform compared to others. But I really want to see a Powerboost F150 thrown in.
The ZF 8HP is the best RWD-biased transmission on the market. END OF STORY
It does not get better.
Great video series. Would love to see the 3.0L Duramax.
Exactly.
agreed, when I get a normal Ram 1500 we shall do this towing loop again and see how it fairs.
Another great video! Still waiting for the 6.4 hemi. 😅
Same man!
The 6.4 isn't available in 1/2 ton trucks.
The GM 2.7 has 159 lb-ft of torque per liter. Which is higher than this 3.0.
Yes, please bring the Hemi test!
Was expecting it to blow the ecoboost away seeing how old it is. Ford holds strong still
my neighbor had to have both exhuast manifolds replaced at 135k to the tune of 3 grand. :-( (2018 3.5 ecoboost)
@ still plenty with over 300k. More proven than the hurricane
@@joeblow5037 That problem was eliminated in 2019, different exhaust manifolds using more bolts. Exhaust manifold leaks are common with GM V8's and the 5.7 Hemi.
@@benjaminwayneb look over there....a bird 🦜
@@joeblow5037 Look over there, a shit Fiat.
I'd rather use the torque and enjoy the quiet, smooth pulling experience than save 1 mpg
I swapped my Ecoboost for a Toyota 5.7L and the 5.7L just never feels like it has any reserve power.
As usual, well done sir.
Nice reviews as always but we really need to see the Tundra and the Titan as well.
The titan is dead.
Foreign novelty turds
Tundra is a real option. but the titan is a tough one to get.
@@TheGettyAdventures To bad, the Titan had a 5.0 Cummins.
12:35 the truck you passed was towing a huge load up that hill.
Agreed & understood.
I haven't driven a newer RAM with the 8 speed ZF but with the 5 speed and 8 speed in the Cherokees I get way better fuel mileage with tow/haul mode disabled.
id like to see that new tundra on that loop, great video
Don’t break the visor by moving it to the side window location. I’m on my 3rd one in my 2019
lmaoo hard on the visors are ya?
Good video thanks for testing
Hope you add the gm 3L diesel to the list soon
I’m wondering if you’re only getting those hp and tq numbers that dodge claims if you use premium gas. For any turbo engine for that matter
Is this a 4Auto transfer case? I wonder if the t-case was slipping. If the front wheels were not spinning then you know it was not staying locked up
Please test a 3.0l duramax! Love the chanel
Do the 5.7 with etorque. I just upgraded to one from a 2015 hemi and the mpg while towing is awesome.
Hey Alex, can you do a video on your PW again? I've heard that you can't tune and or do any engine performance upgrades to the 6.4 hemi cause it's already maxed out in power. Is that true?
Man I’m sorry but I’ll never feel confident with a 3.0 liter twin turbo engine for long term durability especially with using it as a tow vehicle!
Ford really could do so much more with that 2.7L I’d love to see what they continue to do with it.
I think they should put the 3.0L in the F150. Its the same architecture as the 2.7L, just bigger turbos and displacement and more power.
Great video Alex. Im reallystarting to like that 3.0 . Id buy one for sure.
Good video/info Alex thanks
Alex, it would be interesting to know how was the engine break going downhill compared to the Eco Boost and V8s you tested.
Well I will stick with
my Eco diesel. Twice the MPG, less RPM when pulling a load. Ram made a bid mistake when they dropped it.😊
Happy you are enjoying the Ecodiesel! when they are running well they work well.
we will keep our 5.7 for a couple more years(or more), it's has well over 50,000 km of towing 7000 lbs, never missed a beat!
what grade of fuel are all these trucks using? our 5.7 is supposed to use mid grade but we have always used regular
The graphics around 5:25 show the 8HP45 trans, but this has the 8HP75
Be interesting to see this motor compared with the 3.0L high output
Man these turbocharged engines get thirsty when towing.
You have excellent videos!
Blah
I agree didn't help
The 2024 3.0l LZ0 "baby" Duramax(widely available in North America) has 495ft/lbs torque, which equates to 165ft/lbs torque per liter...
3.5 Ecoboost has a 12 injectors. 6 Port injectors and 6 direct injectors, probably that's why pressure lower.
The Powerboost has 163 ft-lb per liter based on 570 ft-lbs of torque.
@@thewhitecarrot Ram’s had ZFs since 2013.
Of course we like it👍👍👍
You need to do the HO version of this engine.
Interesting because the SO engine is reliably out accelerating the ecoboost including the powerboost and 3.5 raptor unloaded. Must have been the tire spin that hurt it here.
When you show the chart of the gear ratios it says 8HP45, but this is an 8HP75 I believe.
You need to do this video review with the 3.0 duramax.
Ford need to bring back a aluminum version of the 300 I6 a single turbo
You should test 5.6L titan.
I’d love to see the high output aswell
Probably burn the rubber right off the wheels lol
Are you going to do the towing test with the GM 3L diesel ?
As an owner of a 2016 F150 3.5 eco boost and a 2023 Ram Rebel with 5.7L, they get almost the exact same fuel milage towing and normal driving and the Ram sounds 10x better. I'll take the 5.7 any day.
It seems for the best compromise/all around, the ford 2.7 is the choice.
I would say that or the 5L. even the 6.2L gm V8 isn't a bad option for towing.
The front of that trailer looks like the morning after a bar fight.
Now this thing likes 3600 rpm. The gearing accounts for that. The damn thing better be able to live at 3600 rpm for extended periods lol.
lol works all the same
@TheGettyAdventures without a doubt lol. Call it trailer jealousy 😂
The fact is that higher rpm is best for longevity… Lugging an engine is not good for the long term
Serious question, what happens if you lose a turbo...???
That's funny, failures in our metro shop are as rare as hens teeth.
I currantly own a 2019 ram 1500 5.7 5th gen I tow a enclosed mobile washing trailer loaded im 12k im about 6000lbs empty im in Saskatchewan Canada on a 5hour drive towing my trailer empty im 35-38 L/100km my best cam out to 9mpg on a flat strech between Biggar SK and Saskatoon... Ironicly my old 98 Z71 with a 5.7 vortec 3:73 gears gets 10-12 mpg pulling same trailer on same strech doesnt matter if its a head wind or tail wind just what the old girl gets🤷 But these new truck with these transmisions with all these gear do tow really nice Ill be keeping my ram hemi dealer just put a new long block in it got warranty on thar motor now till almost 300 000km new trucks are no longer affordable even to us small buisness owners so 🤷
those old K1500 trucks are awesome rigs
Please do a tundra Iforcemax 🎉
Geez Louise you could have taken a leaf 🍁 blower and blown out all the leaves 🍁 from the cowling vents before filming this ! 😂
Can it tow? Probably. Can it tow a lot over a long span of time? Probably not. Well, not until some plastic parts are swapped out like the thermostat module. I really want to like this engine, the i6 configuration can be really good, but this is a stellantis engine..
