2 things to note. When he was braking to see how far he slid, we call that traction sampling. I'd practice that at my HPDEs. And "2 feet in" means one foot on the brake and one foot on the clutch to keep the car from stalling so that you can pull away from your spin quickly and get out of the way of the other drivers on track.

@@whitetooth213 Manual vechicles, you push the clutch pedal and brake pedal at the same time, brakes to stop the car and holding the clutch to avoid stalling the engine, once you stop you can put the car back into gear and move off the track to make it safer for other drivers.
Seeing someone driving on snow is just sooo satisfying, especially if there is some clean drifts...

I have a RWD MB C-Class station wagon and I love to drive that in the snow. It is just so easy to throw around, and then catch. It gives you a lot of awareness on how it is going to behave in low-traction situations. One thing is fundamental: you need to take it slowly, otherwise it will catch you out and you'll lose it (and, eventually, crash it). Good video, as always!

I definitely learned to better my car control in the snow. Gives you good situational awareness and allows you to play with a lot of different conditions
I’m from Maine. And love driving RWD in the snow. Against the advise of everyone I know I’m getting a MT RWD GR86. It was that or a FWD BMW X1. If you know how to drive them in the snow they are actually easier to control and you learn how to drive better in the snow. This video is great!

I used to drift my mom's 7 series in the snow on downtown city streets. I was always surprised how balanced and easy it felt. Something special about BMWs.
i love your video, appreciate you addressing the nuances of driving in snow and finding that balance of wanting to have fun abut also be mindful of those around you even if it means you have to hold off and wait for another road to practice sliding.
I recently started to get out driving in the snow with my (Front wheel drive unfortunately) car and just learning how it behaves. Unfortunately most of the time if it snows, the streets are also icy and that makes it really tricky since if you lose control, you can't do anything about it. But oh man, with only snow and no ice on the streets and in parking lots, it 's just so much fun to get to know your car even better and how it behaves, seeing how front-wheel drive just pulls you straight and being prepared for certain situations.

Fwd will behave differently but it's a great learning experience too. On the other half it's true that rwd will give that low speed sideways satisfaction we're looking immediately. We even tried in a vw bug, there was a lot of understeer aha
I have a FWD car and tbh I'd much rather have RWD for winter. Trying to correct understeer is practically impossible while correcting oversteer is actually doable. Had a bad snow storm last week, took a slight curve going 15mph, slid, wheel was turned all the way to the left but had mad understeer and slid right into a curb.
@@Tanner_Teves you can have understeer with rwd too, especially with a heavier engine and with a mechanical lsd (that has preload and ramps on deceleration). Though it can be corrected with a bit of throttle to make it oversteer, if it's icy under snow with a bit of speed to bleed off, it can understeer too. Giving it full lock won't help, on the contrary. It's the same in the wet (and on the dry at the extreme), you have to work with the available mechanical grip you have, once you've exceeded that limit, more steering angle won't give you more turn in, you have to bring back the wheel and try to gain back that grip, and then try to stay in that limit of available grip. Easy to say I know, when it's icy and curb is coming straight at ya. A little fwd with not much power, skinny snow tires and lightweight can be weapons in snow believe me. You'd have to work harder with a rwd to do the same
I'll never forget the first time I drove in the snow in my Miata with winter tires. I felt like a superhero! Now, after a few spinouts and snow bank incidents under my belt, I've learned a few lessons.

I learned to drive in the snow with my parents, I drove my mom to work and my dad was in the car to give me some pointers, but then they didn't let me have the freedom to slide the car or anything, so this year I went out and got somewhere in the range of 40 miles of snow driving, all in one day, which was the day of the snow storm, the snow was coming down hard and there was about a foot of fresh snow, I was in my automatic transmission 2003 forester, and with 165 hp, no traction control, abs, and a manual hand brake, I had more fun driving that day than I've had in a long time, being on all seasons meant traction wasn't too bad especially considering awd, but it's not like I had grip, if I was to floor it I'd just spin all 4 tires, regardless I taught myself a lot better car control in my school parking lot, then got onto some one way roads with nobody around and drifting slowly like this was a great experience, but unlike the people that have done the same and crashed their car, I didn't get in over my head, I did the traction sampling thing a lot to see how grip levels were, and then I circled back and had more fun on the 2nd pass, it was great.
Also that tailgating thing that the Durango did is so scary, some people, especially those in huge lifted trucks, I swear have no concept of stopping distance. I also ran into another problem where people would not only be driving with almost no functional lights, but also leave a good foot of snow on their car, and I don't just mean like on the roof, I mean they just got in, ran the wipers, and drove off with they're blinkers, brake lights and headlights completely covered, I saw two cars I legitimately couldn't identify because I could not even see the front grill fully and it's freaky, it's as if they have no idea of any of the regulations around that kind of thing.
Anyways apart from that and overly cautious drivers doing the classic 10mph in a 35mph zone, holding up like 12 cars, I ran into no stupid people that clearly couldn't drive their cars or that were driving dangerously etc. so that was a plus.

I have been enjoying your content for some time now, so much that it inspired me to do similar content with cars I can get my hands on. I sadly don't have great equipment to shoot the videos with, but I will upload something and we'll see how it goes. In terms of the RWD snow driving tips I'd just keep on reminding people to get the basics right - 1. Decent snow tires with correctly set pressures 2. Limited-slip diff is not a must, but it definitely helps making the rear end behaviour more consistent 3. Don't act like you are trying to prove your driving skills, always leave room for error. Yes. Colin McRae always drove on the limit, but he also crashed all the time. The difference is he had sponsors that would pay the repair bills.

I had a RWD 1997 325i. Once I got real Michelin snow tires it was pretty awesome. All season radials, were awful. Lol.
I have an m2 Competition and am in Maine. It’s a standard too, so winters are a blast.

I have a volvo wagon with the turbo 5 cylinder 2.5. awd too, its amazing how intuitive it is when you practice first. awd only sides a few feet in the dry, so poerslides in rain and moderate drifting, full drifting in snow. some mods from ipd and new cvs axles, limited slip diff (rear) & viscous center diff (middle). Safe drifting everybody!
Love winter driving! I grew up where the plows didn’t come until later in the day so every morning driving in my 76 Nova was a joy! The first winter I had a FWD car it was definitely safer, but not as much fun.

Friendly tip is to try and use as low rpm's as possible, going sideways with these even in the snow at slow speeds but going up the revs causes very high temperatures for the engine with limited cooling

Recently moved to Alberta and one of the weirdest facts I learned right away is, they don't require snow tires here...The place where it's often -40 and snow plows take days to start clearing the roads, even if it keeps snowing. Yet where I'm from, Vancouver Island, you rarely see the snow actually on the roads because they're on that, and also because they're reasonable they require snow tires, even with much warmer weather and much less snow.
Im 19 and i do this all the time in my truck. The amount i have learned just by dicking around is great highly recommended.

I learned on my petrol e46 330i manual from 2002 with summer tires on the snowy mountain roads :D Boooy do I have a lot more to learn but man it was fun this winter.
On the topic of LL Bean, I bought a pair of slippers from them back in 2014. Best slippers I have ever had! Still wear them today (currently wearing them as I type this)! lol

Wish we had more snow in the uk :(. Always Loved driving in it - we normally have at least a couple days of snow but we had nothing this year.
I strongly recommend this guy becomes a driving instructor or opens a driving school of his own. People would learn to keep control so much better

When i started to learn drive at 13 years old. My dad bought pretty old m5 dont remember the model, but it was heavily snowing and i just started drifting and now i just love drifting and i like to do zigzags through papas trucks. I have not hit them yet lol

I remember when I got my grandpas Vauxhall Astra G 1.7 DTi Caravan after he passed away. That was a FWD car but it still was easily to drift with and after I gained some experience and once was hydroplaning on the german highway, I managed to save this car based on my experience. I made over 500.000miles with this car until I bought my first BMW E87 and this car was way more fun to mess around with but it also gives me a lot of new experience. I only drove this car for 8390miles but I still got used to the fact that it behaves differently from a FWD car and it also is more aggressive if I turn right or left on a intersection and it was like raining or snowing

Ive been snow drifting for like 5 years and have been playing sim racing games for like 7 and just at 8:17 i realized drifting is basically extreme sit and spin from when i was like 3 years old

I was as in my moms FWD golf mk7 and ripped the e-brake in the snow.... anyways my thumb slipped off the e-brake and it locked in the upright position, i hit a snowbank and a tree. I could have bought my own car with the amount of money that it cost me to repair :( Have fun but definitely play it safe guys.

I got my first car last year '09 Subaru Impreza and i got overconfident in my ability to drift and slid straight into a curb on my wheels face and barely didn't bend it. This year I'll be better and I'm so excited to drive again in the snow

I daily drive a 2006 Fiat Punto, some sort of "Torino Edition" with a 1.2 liter 60hp 90nm engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. This winter was absolutely bizarre, and that's putting it lightly.
I live in South-Western Finland, and on Early December, we had one or two mornings where it would be minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit, and the alternator would a little angry about it. On Christmas Eve, we had plenty of snow and we got bombarded with snow on Christmas Day. You'd be sledding wherever you go in a tiny FWD, but thankfully I live near the town, so it wasn't all bad.
I had my new Nankang Ice Activa SW-8 studded M+S tires on, and you wouldn't believe me if I told you how well they perform. My car doesn't have a traction control system, which I don't want anyway, but I'm not sure about the differential. In this car, if one tire slips, the other goes a little slower if it has firmer grip. Anyway, this winter was an even greater learning experience, since we got more snow than last year. Sometimes I would find the rear go one way and I would try to turn the opposite way, and a couple times I was turning left in third gear at 21-22 km/h and I would understeer, so I would try to see if a quick handbrake pull would fix it, and that it did.
On snowy surfaces I drive under the speed limit anyway, and it always helps to have your mirrors adjusted so your blind spots are virtually eliminated, not to mention trying to be smart, even when there are no other people around.
Over the past 12 months or so I've learned to downshift with a tap on the gas pedal, and it helps quite a bit when you have to slow down and when pressing the brake pedal isn't the best idea for slowing down optimally. I love driving in the winter. You get to be on your toes even when you're really careful.
I have a e90 328i xdrive, and its actually FANTASTIC in the snow. haha.

This makes me miss my 2004 f150. It only had rear wheel drive and was a little sketchy driving in the snow at first. The truck really taught me a lot of lessons on driving in shitty condition. This is gonna sound stupid but it handles better in the snow than my front wheel drive KIA Optima.

the new button ebrakes just turns into abs when you try to use it as a drift, it could possibly help u with getting the rear out for a second but its not very effective sadly...
