Great driving conditions in fresh snow, really fun actually. Also visibility seemed ok.

The problem starts when you get a steep hill.
Two years ago I had a Rental RWD 530d with winter tires and drove in the Swiss Alps, its was perfect 90% of the time, but in two situations it would go nowhere, turning off traction controll helped in one of the situations, but the other one I had to turn around and go back, and was justa a regular hill, but super slippery. Yup my fwd civic with studded snow tires performed better in the snow than my awd Wrx’s have with all seasons. This year, I got studded snow tires for my sti, so I can’t wait to experience snow tires AND awd.

So interesting to watch being a British viewer!. This kind of snow would absolutely cripple us... even in 2 inches or less most drivers are so inexperienced and seem to think Snow is the same as the rain 😆. Would love to have a go driving in this kind of weather, stressful but relaxing and going for a ride without losing control is just such an adrenaline rush
watching back a few month later. Our roads in the UK are a joke in these conditions. People think they can go driving on tyres that were borderline at the last MOT 6 months earlier. All season tyres should be standard fit in the UK.
Come to canada my friend it’s exactly this 6 months of the year if you do I’ve got some tips 1 winter tires are a must 2 buy a car that allows manual selection of gears doesn’t have to be a stick shift paddle shifters are fine 3 make sure you got 4wd because there is many many steep hills that 2wd is just unable to do no matter the tires 4 have fun drifting because it’s literally a tap of the gas away at all times 5 enjoy the beautiful scenery
The Netherlands would be crippled as well. Even 2 or 3 inches of snow will absolutely destroy the country.. I mean the trains already have problems with leaves on the track lol.
@@markgambrill all seasons are almost useless compared to real winter tyres

I remember watching this in back in high school and it inspired me to get a RWD car as my daily driver. Almost 3 years later now i just bought a new GR86 and i can’t wait to see how it handles in the snow.
Amazing skill.

Glad you enjoyed it
The wind noise was hella pleasant. Pair with the dark and the snow, this was possibly the nicest video you've done. Obviously other things can be more fun, but this was relaxing.
I just randomly found this channel and I think it’s a great one for nervous drivers learning how to drive. People just need to learn how to relax and take it easy when driving
Honestly talking to the camera as you drive is really fun to watch and entertaining, loved the drive, and thank you.
"there's gonna be a bridge" proceeds to say "okay lets jump off here" lmao
Part of me misses driving my little 335 in snow in Sweden, but then I remember that it's only fun for 10 minutes and then it only ends up being a hassle, no matter how good the tires are. I used to drive 11 hour shifts in a taxi and the mental drain, which leads to a physical drain, after 11 hours in conditions like these is brutal.
Tires make all the difference! I used to love, LOVE, going out in my s2k. A set of blizzaks with that 50/50 weight made it unbelievably capable while passing stuck SUVs 🙂
I'm with you right there in my mx-5 :) its fun as heck but damn the hills are a challenge
Every winter I came back to these videos with m3 on snow! 🔥
I love seeing other people drive in icy/snowy conditions to see how they fare, I live in Alaska so its just a completely normal day, given most people have studded tires here, but I love driving in icy conditions, its a blast, and I think given the circumstance you did great. Super chill video, liked it a lot.
It's honestly amazing to see how well your car and those tires are handling this, I live in an area of the south that doesn't normally get snow but this year we did. I lost traction at the front and ended spinning out, and I wasn't even going 30mph yet. It really doesn't help that my car doesn't have traction control, but I'm really considering getting a set of snow tires for the winter, even if it doesn't snow this year.
Yes! snow tires are great for any kind of cold weather!
For your situation maybe try non studded snow tires
His driving ability should be taken into account more than his tires. You should not drive like him in the snow if you don't have experience counter steering even if you got good winter tires. There were times he was counter steering for a long time at once because he had no traction in the rear and was just fishtailing. Someone who has not got a lot of experience counter steering would likely spin out driving like that in a storm.
Trying to go 30 mph or over was your 1st mistake
@@LaskInHD eat my jorts and choke on them. This was my first time driving in snow because the last time it literally snowed like this was when I was in middle school 16 years ago.

I come back to this video every once in a while.. Love the atmosphere of this snowy drive! Would love to have such a blizzard happen in my little country (The Netherlands) but it hardly ever snows over here
I'm not sure, as a one off thing every year or so would be nice, but in places where it's common, I rather not lol.
Haha me too, don't know why. Love the snow, calm night.
I just re watched the video 2 yrs later and it was very calming.
The sliding can be fun with a RWD or AWD car, but the rest of it is anything but fun. When you live through a long winter that's mostly weather like this, you will wish you didn't even need a car. There's a huge list of problems that goes with the weather. Some cars you can never get to start reliably in freezing conditions. It's not a fun experience when you are forced to deal with it.
Idk man but when you sit inside a warm car while its freezing outside and dark and snowy is just a different kind of vibe man.
I absolutely love the videos of you driving a rear wheel drive on the snow, its so entertaining to watch how you control the car.
It's actually super easy to control the car like that in the snow. It's a really easy way to teach people how to drift and spin the ass end around. Just take them to an empty, snow covered parking lot and 20 mins or so later, they're doing it like champs. Then in the summer, just apply the same principles.
@@hlf_coder6272 Yeah, rwd is easy. Especially on snow, no real chance of spinning out compared to on ice.

I love seeing you slide cars around because you make it one smooth motion! When I try to slide cars around in my racing sims (not ballsy enough to do it IRL) it's always a panicky frenzy of "Oh crap, countersteer quick!"

I would say sliding around is easier irl than racing sims because it's actually really easy when you get use to it.

I love that you weren't afraid to get out and drive your m3 in this.. very cool
This was the most New England thing I've seen in a while! Sweet driving 🤟
I’ve been waiting for this video! I knew it was coming 😁
Having a real mechanical limited slip differential (not those fake ones pulsing the brakes), which the E92 M3 has, helps tremendously in snow. It may not help you at not losing grip, but when you do you can make much better use of what grip is left, i.e. you can keep on going better. And real (and sufficiently new!) winter tires of course.
Years ago I had a C5 Corvette with really good all season tires, I drove it all winter long and never had a problem as long as I respected what is, and is not, possible with a car like that in those conditions. Usually the limiting factor was the ground clearance, not the car's ability to stay on the road.
I feel like the weather looks better on camera than it truly is.
Watching you clean the snow off your M3 in the beginning was therapeutic😂 Great content man!
That was horrifyingly painful for me. He did at least call me out on it as he did it lol.
My first ski trip with a rental car was full blizzard conditions on the way back, and it was more memorable than the skiing itself.
This is my favorite video that you made! Driving in the snow in your favorite car is just super relaxing.
Drove my S5 all the way from Great Neck, NY to Raleigh, NC during the blizzard in Dec 2017. It was the craziest most enjoyable drive of my life. All those years of rally sim racing paid off in spades. But the quattro AWD did help. Mind you, I did that leg on all seasons, not snow tires. Pretty sure I'd be toast if it was RWD. Watching this reminded me of that crazy drive. Nicely done!
Haha. I did a similar drive in the blizzard of Dec 2009 from great neck to Hartford in my moms Volvo awd and oem all season tires. I was young at the time and didn’t think much about it. But now looking back, I realized it was stupid and dangeorus! This Volvo was the first awd car we ever had and it performed so amazing well it gave me a lot of false sense of traction.
I LOVE these types of night drive videos 🔥
I love blizzards, not for driving, but how awesome and beautiful it looks. My brother in law also has a jeep cherokee which we took drifting during this storm. Awd is so much fun in the snow. Also have your high beams on while its snowing and its like entering hyperspace. God, im a grown ass man and i still think snow is so much fun
It`s not that dangerous, if you are used to it. We have winters like these where I live (Northern Europe) from time to time and the key of getting home safe is a good set of fresh winter tires + common sense. I`ve been driving rwd cars all my life and winters like these are a treat. I love how silent the driving feels. Absolutely no road noise. Just the engine. Don`t floor it, don`t jerk the steering wheel too sharp, don`t downshift hard , brake gently and you will be fine. Way more dangerous is slightly freezing temp + rain when the black ice is forming on the roads. Thumbs up for keeping that traction control off. :)
This is so calming and cozy to watch, i enjoyed it alot!
Essentials of winter driving: planning ahead, great tires, planning ahead, and driving much MUCH slower than usual. You'll make it home every time. Great video.
Dude, we got the same snowstorm here in Ottawa, but less violent.
It was wild how different it could be just by a factor of miles. Any coastal towns here barely got a flake haha

As a Brit, and driven in snow and ice my thoughts are as follows.
It’s all about the vehicle, weight distribution and tyres-and driving technique.
Years ago when we tended to have a bit of snow every winter, you got used to driving in it.
I never bought winter tyres unless they were already on the car when I purchased it..
What you need is plenty of tread. It’s the snow in the tread that gives you traction in the snow.
This vid shows a lot of fresh snow, hard packed frozen snow is like a skating rink.
Weight distribution in a vehicle is important a heavy diesel engine and a front wheel drive car will do better than a rear wheel drive car with nothing in the boot (trunk).
A couple of bags of sand in the boot will make a difference.
Four wheel drive vehicles will slide on ice as well as anything else.
You need good ground clearance as well.
Above all, you need to drive accordingly, at the first sign of snow I used to go have a play in it and drive around to familiarise myself with it.
People usually drive a route at the same speed, brake in the same places and in the same gear (if it’s a manual) whatever the weather.
Winter driving needs you to drive gently and anticipate in advance. On a clear road in (not too deep) fresh snow it’s not an issue, but on hard packed stuff surrounded buy idiot drivers it’s best to stay at home!😂
in Norway some are legit driving 120mph in these conditions, just built different i guess :D

Would you say the LSD from the M3 really helps in weather like this? I'm wondering how an open diff RWD would've faired
Yes definitely helpful. It means you need to be more comfortable with driving sideways and controlling slip, but its trickier to get moving with an open diff in really slippery conditions. My 350Z had an open diff and although I never got stuck, it was not as confident as the M3.
A proper differential is the key in snow!
@@itchyonion3559 More like proper winter tires
@@silimarina. Both are good if one wheel is on ice with an open diff you are buggered regardless
@@RCXDerp True, but tires are the most important investment in your car. Because they are the ones that make the contact with the road. You can have all the 4x4, open diff, ESP, TC,etc.if you don't have winter tires in conditions like this you will not go far
There is something oddly satisfying in driving in snowy conditions, in a warm car, by yourself. I can't explain it, you either know this feeling or not.
