I'm pretty sure Volcanion *is* a Tarasque Pokémon as it has a leonine head, six legs (the ring on its back are actually a long pair of arms/legs it fires attacks from), a turtle-like body, and attacks mainly using blasts of boiling water & steam (most French dragons including the Vouvire/Guivre, the Peluda, and the Gargouille used boiling hot water & steam breathe attacks rather than fire).
I've heard "tarrasque" may be where the "tar" comes from in gen 2's pseudo-legends. Granted just about everything else about them is basically kaiju, but still, I actually first learned about the tarrasque when I was trying to look up where the heck these pokémons' final 3 letters in their name came from.
5:22 “In order to keep your dragon hapy, feed it plenty of happy meals! Never attempt to breed a dragon type yourself, only breed it with another dragon type!”
When I saw that title, I believed you were going to say Druddigon is some kind of "wood dragon". In french, its name Drakkarmin is a combination of the color Carmin with Drakkar, the classical Viking ship with a dragon head. Honestly I would love if you added name analysis of other languages in videos like these or made a short video as addendum because there's also interesting things in the translations from other languages!
It would be cool for a new evolution of Druddigon to wholly embrace its gargoyle inspiration, becoming part rock type. And I'm not the only one, fangames have actually done this idea before
tbh, druddigon, to me, looks like the final stage of an evolution line but then again, dragons usually are a 3 stage evolution line in Pokemon ...i also feel the same way with tropius, they both feel like they would have pre-evos
Not going to lie first time I saw Druddigon I legit thought it was a weird Christmas themed dragon because the red head and the shape of the wings made me think of holly. 😂
I'd like to throw in the Holly plant as a possible influence too, the leaves and red berries speak for themselves- but also they're associated with Christmas, which the colours of the shiny still are, and have some representation in wicca and harry potter, magic... arcane.
After he mentioned the "world empires" theme, I just thought it would be neat to see a video going over all of the Unova pokemon that represent empires. The only other one I can think of is Braviary representing the US, so I'd love to see a list of them
@@anerdwithaswitch9686 Ooh that's a good one. I didn't even think about that. Would Hydreigon be for Germany? I mean, its line has the German words for 1, 2, and 3 in it, plus it was originally supposed to be a tank...
Interesting that you went with Braviary representing the US and not Native Americans considering, ya know, literal eagle wearing a war bonnet. :P Never thought about it before but it's counterpart being a vulture with caveman aesthetics actually makes a ton of sense. They both represent early humans, with a bit of the past and future theme mixed in.
Druddigon is my all-time fave pokemon, so you can only imagine how excited I was seeing someone finally picking him up and talking about him after being buried and forgotten for so long, Thank you so much ;o;
A neat detail is the Red and White Dragon legend is brought back in Galar with the rivalry between Leon's Charizard (the "king" of the league) and Rohan's Duraladon (the attempted usurper). With that in mind, Charizard was not the worst pick for Leon's ace, but an even more Welsh Dragon inspired Druddigon evo would have been better (though unlikely given it's not a particularly popular Mon). Or maybe just a new red dragon mon.
@@catherineholt1149 actually, in the context of biology, an animal is called endothermic if it can generate its own heat internally through metabolic processes, which is what being warm-blooded is. An animal described as exothermic in biology is one that needs to get heat from an external source (like the sun). In the video he talks about Druddigon warming itself up by basking in the sun, which is getting heat from an external source, so it would be exothermic
@@catherineholt1149 as Safurah points out, while that is true in the context you are referring to, in biology exothermic animals are ones that can’t generate their own heat, like reptiles. Mammals like humans are endothermic. So in this context the video got the two words mixed up.
[2:46 - 2:27] Don't think I didn’t see that dragon logo. I saw that company sponsor the spec e30 in the tt6 nasa championship, quite a big sponsor too. (In more ways then one)
I actually really like druggion, it looks so colorful and not saying that because I rest on it’s warm tough body. Also to be considered a princess whenever Champion Iris allows me to borrow it sometimes…
I had thistle in my yard and it brought in so many beautiful bugs and birds such as bumblebees, hummingbirds, hummingbird moths and butterflies. And so me and my dad kept them in the yard. Sadly they haven't grown back this year but were hoping it will grow next year as we really like seeing the bugs and hummingbirds it brought in.
I think Lockstin may have conflated two famous dragon-versus-Christian-saint stories in his summary of the George myth. The part where the princess throws a leash around the dragon's neck and leads it around seems derived from the legend of Saint Martha and the Tarrasque. In every version of the Saint George story I could find, George slays the dragon he fights.
Also, bearded dragons make wonderful pets. They do like to try and eat my fingers when in hunting mode. Crested geckos are also wonderful pets. They're stupid as all get out, unless they want to be chaotic.
Either I've been having false memories or this video gets the technical terms for warm-blooded and cold-blooded backwards. They're pretty similar-sounding, so it's understandable to mix them up. Also, now I'm picturing a druddigon getting eaten by a particularly melancholic mudbray. Thanks for that image.
I figured it was partially the red headed lizard, but I thought it had those 3 because well those are the 3 primary colors, then the shiny is... well 2 of 3 secondary colors, doesn't have purple on it, but has green and orange.
I know Lockstin doesn't like it, but this is one of my favorite gen 5 pokemon and has been since I was a kid. Idk why, but big spiky dragon living in an abandoned tower was just really cool. Then again, I love Vanilluxe too so maybe I have bad taste :p
Blacephelon is definitely not based on a dandelion in any way, shape or form. It's fireworks and a clown. Where and how do you see a dandelion in it's design? because I don't.
Something else you left out while not her father, Drayden is Iris' Grandfather making that connection even deeper, and while Haxorus is both their signature Pokemno a lot of people do associate Drayden with Druddigon.

It's a single stage, mono-dragon with no unique moves or abilities in a generation that already has a pokedex filler problem. And it's not even that good, it's a trick room attacker that isn't as slow or bulky as it could be, who's only good dragon move is Dragon Claw. I can definitely see why people don't like it
@@Druid-T All fair points, unfortunately a lot of the complaints you'd see didn't go beyond "looks like it was drawn by a toddler". It was a much needed balance change from dragons being reserved as "the best" Pokemon.
I always liked Druddigon when i was a small boy who watched the Pokemon Black and White anime, i like the colors, and the spikes aswell **Even though they look like crayon tips** and I still like it to this day and I hope it gets more love in future generations

This video definitely made me appreciate the design even more than I did (and hopefully others will too, please it would be great if there were more than four Druddigon fans). I hope one day it gets an evolution or at least something to make it more worth using, right now it's just not since most of its stats are kinda meh (when it's even in the games at all..)
@@Polska_Edits Yeah! I personally just love the colors, the very rough skin and the wings it uses for photosynthesis, essentially. I don't even think it's that ugly, I don't get why people think it is lol
With everything Lockstin said, I believe druddigon are actually native to galar and maybe some snuck onboard ships that went to kalos and unova if colonization in our world is anything to go off of🍂🦎
There’s one thing you forgot to mention about bearded dragons: they’re the goodest of boys, which, by the transitive property, makes Druddigon a good boy.
I love Druggion! Sometimes makes me a little sad to see others call 'em ugly..They're great spikey bois and I'd absolutely love to have one, while it's not on my top favorites list I still really enjoy it's design; nice to know it has deep lore and inspirations to it too :]
For those who want to know, the crests on a crested Gecko aren't pointy or spikey at all. They're soft and you can squish their cheeks when you pet them. They're very nice to pet, 10/10.
No matter how right you may be, this video doesn't convince me Druddigon is based on a plant. It really feels like the goal was the question of "IF Druggigon was based on a plant, which would it be?" rather than the question of "On what is Druddigon based?".
So unfortunate with the sponsor, it's a massive scam company. There is no "buy some land become a lord" law and honestly, all you actually get is a piece of paper with your name and "Lord" attached.
2:00 Endotherms are animals that generate their own body heat, like mammals and birds (warm blooded). Ectotherms are reliant on outside heat sources, like reptiles (Cold blooded)
3:10 I have a pet bearded dragon! They are so adorable. I have to say, you’re somewhat wrong. Beardie’s aren’t aggressive, but territorial. However, if you aren’t considered prey or a rival (such as a medium-large herbivore), it will ignore you. If you are massive, such as a human, it will be wary but will not attack even if you pick it up in the wild until all countermeasures fail. This is quite obvious with pet “Beardies”, who sometimes actually _enjoy_ being held. They are mostly insectivores, but majority will also happily dine on veggies and small fruit, as well as rodents big enough for them to chew (such as small rats used to feed snakes). But for 90% of the day, they will happily sit on their rock, in the sun, basking. The most recognizable feature on a bearded dragon, is, well, the beard! While other lizards may be able to puff out their chest, chin, and/or throat to make themselves appear larger, beardies are able to push it out and turn it deep black, which both warns the target and makes it appear larger. This is simply a defense mechanism, and should be taken as a warning to not get any closer (well, for animals. A human can get up close and it will run away instead of attacking). But the beard trick is actually a bit reminiscent of their cousin, the Frilled-neck lizard, which has massive frills that can pop out (like the dilophosaurus in Jurassic Park), but it is simply a defense mechanism to ward off attackers. It cannot spit venom or anything like that. But bearded dragons are part of the “dragon family”, or the “Amphibolurinae subfamily” which, as you can probably guess, is filled with many lizards that are nicknamed “dragon”. Though there are some exceptions to this family, such as the Frilled-neck Lizard or Thorny Devil. Most notably is the locations of these species. Being a subfamily, all these species are actually biologically super close. However, their habitats vary across the world. Most of them come from around Australia, but some are _native_ to southern USA/northern Mexico, Asia, and (I may be wrong) Europe. Somehow, these species which live so far away are extremely related to each other (still unable to usually produce viable offspring, but I am sure in super rare cases it can happen). But for druddigon, I’d say there are other reptiles that fit it better than the Bearded Dragon. I’m not a reptile expert, so I don’t know of many beyond Bearded Dragons, but there are plenty of species that are even spikier than the Bearded Dragon, such as the Horned Lizard (can shoot blood out of its eyes) and the Thorny Devil (is 90% spikes, 9% cuteness, 1% devil)
The connection between thistles and Druddigon of all Pokémon feels really weird, especially since Druddigon’s origins are very defined. Druddigon is clearly based on gargoyles and rock monsters, aside from the obvious western dragon. It’s clear from its cave habitat, rocky, craggy appearance, and aversion to sunlight, a trait shared by many rock creatures. Its wings aren’t leaves, but are more rocks or stalactites, while attempting to keep the generic wing shape in mind.
1:57 I think you got your definitions mixed up. Endothermic animals are warm-blooded, and can regulate their own body temperature. Exothermic is strictly a chemistry term. The word you're looking for is ectothermic; Ectothermic animals (like Druddigon) are cold-blooded, and must regulate their body temperature using external sources i.e. sunlight

@@wilkmarton Oh, thank you. I just remembered hearing that bit of trivia before and thought to share it. Thank you for informing me! Every bit of data I accumulate in various fields makes me a smarter person.
Wouldn't be the only place I've seen a "D" represent the dental fricative-most of the Norse languages along with the IPA use a letter called "eth" (Ðð) to represent the voiced dental fricative. Besides, seeing Blaidd reminded me of BLAIDD DRWG.
As a Welsh person it's beautiful hearing you attempt to pronounce the Welsh words 😂 thank you for not pushing us aside like GF did for Galar :')
Technically the Ice part of Galar around Circhester is Wales
@@timgorg1919 I think Circhester is Bath. And even if is based off Wales, one city to represent a whole country is exactly what they mean by being forgotten. I was hoping there'd be a second DLC that included Wales and Ireland as new areas.

I'm sad we didn't get a Tarrasque Pokémon in Kalos, it is a neat story from what I know of it.
We definitely need a tarrasque pokemon, it should be dark/poison or poison/dragon.
@@Serpentking789 While you do make good points, I don't see it, the Tarrasque is said to have poison breath and spew fire from it's eyes,
I've heard "tarrasque" may be where the "tar" comes from in gen 2's pseudo-legends.
Granted just about everything else about them is basically kaiju, but still, I actually first learned about the tarrasque when I was trying to look up where the heck these pokémons' final 3 letters in their name came from.
5:02 the wings remind me of Holly leaves. Honestly, the entire aesthetic of Druddigon reminds me of the Common Holly bush.
Yeah, the red part could even be seen as matching the berries.
5:22 “In order to keep your dragon hapy, feed it plenty of happy meals!
Never attempt to breed a dragon type yourself, only breed it with another dragon type!”
If it worked with Donkey, I see no reason why it couldn't work with me
Tohru: I hope Kobayashi didn't read that.
You are right and you deserve more likes
It would be cool for a new evolution of Druddigon to wholly embrace its gargoyle inspiration, becoming part rock type. And I'm not the only one, fangames have actually done this idea before

druddigons shiny kinda reminds me of a dandelion, but like slightly a different coloured head
"Druddigon is many things, one of them is ugly!" That absolutely killed me. The way you just said it so casually. 😂
Not going to lie first time I saw Druddigon I legit thought it was a weird Christmas themed dragon because the red head and the shape of the wings made me think of holly. 😂
I feel like Lockstin videos videos are an equal share of tactical analysis and acid trip.
And it couldn’t be more perfect.

Interesting that you went with Braviary representing the US and not Native Americans considering, ya know, literal eagle wearing a war bonnet. :P
Never thought about it before but it's counterpart being a vulture with caveman aesthetics actually makes a ton of sense. They both represent early humans, with a bit of the past and future theme mixed in.
Fun fact the legendary trio for Sword and Shield share the same origin as Druddigon, Drayden and Iris.

You've got it backwards, endotherms are warm-blooded and ectotherms are cold-blooded
Druddigon has always been one of my favourite Pokémon. It deserves so much more love.
1:58 I think you got the terms mixed up here ^^;
endothermic refers to being warm-blooded, while exothermic refers to being cold-blooded
actually endothermic is a scientific term for a chemical reaction that draws heat in or absorbs it. which is what reptiles do they absorb heat.
LOL. That's what I was wondering. I could have sworn exo meant outside, like an exoskeleton, and endo meant inside, like a endoskeleton.
Was just about to comment this myself

I think Lockstin may have conflated two famous dragon-versus-Christian-saint stories in his summary of the George myth.
The part where the princess throws a leash around the dragon's neck and leads it around seems derived from the legend of Saint Martha and the Tarrasque. In every version of the Saint George story I could find, George slays the dragon he fights.
Oh. That's another inspiration for Druddigon and Iris.
Y'know, gargoyles ARE pretty underrated Halloween creatures! Druddigon's neat, maybe one day we'll get a Rock/Dragon RF?

Blacephelon is definitely not based on a dandelion in any way, shape or form. It's fireworks and a clown. Where and how do you see a dandelion in it's design? because I don't.
Something else you left out while not her father, Drayden is Iris' Grandfather making that connection even deeper, and while Haxorus is both their signature Pokemno a lot of people do associate Drayden with Druddigon.
tbh I always thought Druddigon's color scheme was basically just like Braviary. American lizard
1:57 they’re not called exothermic and endothermic. They are called exotherms and endotherms.
well in Disney's Gargoyles it was scientifically proven that gargoyles uses the stone sleep state to use the sun as a way to store energy for the next night so the theory goes
1:54 The terms as used here are incorrect; Druddigon would be called an ectotherm (cold-blooded) while mammals are endotherms (warm-blooded)
I never understood the hate towards Druddigon as it's actually my favorite dragon type. Maybe I'm just crazy.

All fair points, unfortunately a lot of the complaints you'd see didn't go beyond "looks like it was drawn by a toddler".
Personally I think its kinda cool looking, and while its not amazing that's actually a good thing. That allowed it to be available earlier and with less hassle as a "lesser dragon". It was a much needed balance change from dragons being reserved as "the best" Pokemon.

Its head with its wings makes me think of holly (like the head as the berry and the wings as leaves)

Its Grass typing was stolen by a prehistoric echinoderm.
Well, there's Flapple and Appletun. I have no idea why Exeggutor: Alola Form has its typing.

Only tangentially relevant, but honestly? I really like thistles. They're genuinely one my favourite plants.
Awesome theory but the fact that Druddigon wasn't in the Galar dex makes me believe it was more a case of "make it spiky because lizards are spiky."
I always looked at Druddigon as a vulture dragon, with the red head being like the bald head of vultures!
In a way you are right as turkey vultures use old burrows and stick nests as nesting sites.
For those who want to know, the crests on a crested Gecko aren't pointy or spikey at all. They're soft and you can squish their cheeks when you pet them. They're very nice to pet, 10/10.
Every degenerate at 2:46 just giving yourselves away. If you recognize the logo, you can't claim to be innocent
I love Druddigon and I do more now Imagine if we got a TRUE reverse (Grass dragon) or normal (Rock Dragon) Gargoyles evo for it

Quite a dapper Towering Pillar of Hats.
I love Druddidogrodon, he is one of my favourite dragon types!
1:57 lizards are ectotherms not endotherms pretty big point to mix up ;)
2:00 Endotherms are animals that generate their own body heat, like mammals and birds (warm blooded).
Huh. I’ve been following your channel for years, but I never expected this… I love it.
1:57 I think you got your definitions mixed up. Endothermic animals are warm-blooded, and can regulate their own body temperature. Exothermic is strictly a chemistry term. The word you're looking for is ectothermic; Ectothermic animals (like Druddigon) are cold-blooded, and must regulate their body temperature using external sources i.e. sunlight
I forgot Druddigon was in that baseball episode XD
