Fun theory time: One of reasons for the 3 Dogs, is because they are also inspired by the rhyme "Rub-a-Dub-Dub". Where the 3 main characters are the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker. @Avatar Lhamo We had lots of weiner dogs when I was growing up. It looks like some weird mixed-breed Weenie, Corgi, and "others". It is definitely very odd looking. It's a bit too dense and sturdy for a Dachshund to me.
I'm surprised that, for Greavard and Houndstone, you didn't mention the sheer *abundance* of ghost dogs present in Spanish mythology. The Pesanta and the Dip from Catalonia and the Urco from Galicia and Asturias are some examples of this. Many of these ghostly dogs are said to be big, black and intimidating, so maybe they played a role in Mabosstif's design too. The Inugami, or spiritual possession of a dog in Japanese folklore, is also worth mentioning I think.
Something you didn't seem to note about Dachsbun's appearance: The back looks braided, like challah bread. Baked challah bread is very close to Dachsbun's normal coloring.
This works really well because of Sefardic Jews, literally meaning “Jews from Spain”. There used to be a huge Jewish population in spain prior to the inquisition.
i actually named my playthrough dachsbun "challah" because thats what i thought of when i first saw it !! a large portion of my family are practicing jewish (not me im an atheist) and some of us are ethnically ashkenazi jews (yes me) so when i think of braided breads i tend to think of challah before i think of anything else. also, i prefer the flavor of challah to the flavor of most breads, including brioche.
Yeah, challah is the best bread for making French toast. It probably helps that it’s an egg bread so it can absorb the liquids really well. Unfortunately for me we can’t have it often due to it not being common in grocery stores whet I live. Back up north in Connecticut we would have it a bit more often.
Mabostiff is definitely my favorite, not just because of the design and story in the games themselves. But the breed the dog is based on gives me happy memories of a Mastiff I had as a family dog, who’s mind out lasted her body. And while that’s sad, I see a small amount of her in Mabostiff
I had a Mobastiff before I started Arvin's storyline. I kept him throughout the entire game. I love Mobastiff. I plan on doing a challenge run where I'm only allowed to use dogs in Paldea.
Yes absolutely Mobastiff is the BEST of the new dog 'mon (imo)! Lol I got mine cuz I thought the prevo was a fire type and got him during a fire Terra raid lol but he can learn fire fang so it's fine XD
That would be a fun challenge. Mabosstiff is such a good boy who deserves all the good thing! But I love all the doggos they gave us this gen...Greavard and Houndstone need hugs and to no longer be alone and my Dachsbun gets so many points for all the car bumpers she ate (she was MVP versus Team Star somehow...only Ortega knocked her out).
The whole plot line with Arven’s Mabosstiff was genuinely touching for me! I ran through Violet for the first time with both Dachsbun and Mabosstiff named after my recently adopted puppies, wasn’t expecting to be super into either mon, but they wound up favorites on the team.
You can make a similar connection to Hachikō, the purebred, Akita dog who made it's way to the same train station waiting for his pet owner for 10 years until his eventual passing. Eerily similar to the Greyfriars Bobby tale along with Futruama Seymour's. But another example of loyalty among dogs.
There are a lot of different dog breeds in our world, makes sense there's be a lot of different varieties in Pokemon too. The same could be said of other animal species as well, but people like doggos.
I wish they did more of a type triangle with the dogs seeing how fairy beats dark, dark beats ghost, and maybe ghost can beat fairy if it knew a poison move
Fun fact: in the academy there are books(duh) one of these books talks about Ryme, the book says that when she was a child, the dog pokemon of the family passed away but not long after was reborn as a ghost pokemon ,so that greavard that dances on top of the beatbox in the middle of the battle-or dj g-rave- is Rymes childhood dog.and Tymes too I guess Also I just realized that this book reveals that greavards dex entry is wrong(the dex says:it is said that a dog pokemon that died without ever interacting with a human was reborn as this Pokémon)so that’s another fun fact
@@maganhassan2627 I mean in the biology classes jacq says that he created the pokedex app 11 years before the games happen, so I guess it is outdated Although 11 years ago would still be AFTER the events the book mentions happen…
the key words are "it is said", in other words they are essentially saying "we have been told this story but we can't necessarily verify it as 100% accurate". Also, it doesn't say that that's how every single Greavard came about, just that there's a story that goes around of how this is the origin of one Greavard. It's the same with the kid that woke up being transformed into a Kadabra or whatever that dex entry was, it's not saying that every Kadabra ever is a kid that's been transformed, it's simply stating that it's just one particular notable instance.
Fun fact my friend figured out about Fidough and Dachsbun; those yellow bits on them are supposed to look like an egg wash, which is a thing you put on certain breads to make them look extra shiny after baking
Like ypu said, Dachsbun in German basically translates to "baked dog". And I'm here to explain the names of the other dog Pokémon. Fidough's name in German is "Hefel" which pulls from "Hefe", the German word for yeast and "Dackel" (Dachshund), "hecheln" (panting) or "Welpe" (Puppy). Maschiff's name is a combination of mob anf mastiff. Mabosstiff's name also pulls from mastiffs and mastifioso. Greavard's German name is "Gruff" anf consist out of "Gruft", German for tomb and "wuff" the sound that dogs make in the German language. Houndstone's German name, Friedwuff is a combination of "Friedhof", the German word for graveyard and "Wuff" again. Also, something about the (German) pronpunciation of "Dachshund": The "Dachs" part would be pronounced like the "ducks". I don't really have a good English word to compare to the "hund" part of the word. It's like "hunt" but the 'u' is more pronounced like a double o. Either way, you can look up the correct pronounciation of Dachshund. And also, please Lockstin, make a video about explaining German Pokémon names.
My first shiny in violet was a female Maschiff that I named Princess, I found her pretty early in the game as it was near the bug gym town. It actually took me a second to realize it was shiny because my first thought for some reason was "gender varient?".
Fun fact; Greavard’s Japanese name, Bochi (ボチ), which is from Pochi (ポチ, a common dog name that also means “spot”) and Bochi (墓地, “Graveyard”), is only two characters, giving it one of the shortest Japanese names of all Pokémon, tied with Pamo (Pawmi) and Pi (Cleffa).
Perhaps Fidough and Dachsbun’s connection with dogs and bread may take inspiration from dog biscuits (both are made from grain) and hot dogs which is a popular fast food sandwich named after dachshunds which are called sausage dogs named for their brown and long bodies. They’re debut in Paldea may reference the similar looking bush dogs and the reigon’s many dogs may reference the etymology of the Canary Islands, which was named for its population of dogs.
@@CraftyLilSoto I'm not saying it was bad, I enjoy all of gen 5, 6, and 7's style. I'm just saying it had a little bit of pixels like 6 and 7 do. Though I think the DS/3DS screen amplifies it
@@noahberan6498 Oh, interesting! I thought gen 5 worked with the same sort of grid that caused the 240p. I didn’t know there was any loss of quality because of it. That’s interesting!
If you say dachshund in the German way I believe it's less like "hound" or "hunt" and more like "hoont", which actually makes it sound very similar to "bundt". Also the three dog lines form an imperfect trio. All two stage lines with a single type, Ghost which is weak to the Dark, and the Dark which is weak to the Fairy.
@@d-o-k-i that doesn't surprise me at all lol. Man, that futurama episode... I've only been able to watch it once, as I cannot bring myself to watch it again. I have seen every episode at least 5 times, but that is the exception.
@@Dremag_Gaming I've been waiting for a chihuahua Pokemon since the series started and am surprised there isn't one by now. Could be a speedy special attacker, a glass canon due to it's small size but it makes up for it with tenacity since chihuahuas are known for their spunky attitude. GAME FREAK PLEASE GIMME A CHIHUAHUA ALREADY.
@@32-bitcloud At this point with regions being based on different countries they very likely are saving it for a possible Mexican and Central American region in the long future. They could even make it evolve into a Xolo dog to emphasize the afterlife connection and have a hairy and hairless variant like IRL.
Also here's another fact: Spain used to rule over Southern Italy for the longest time and has impart a lot of its culture there. It would make sense that there would be some "Italian" pokemon that got imported to Paldea if this was the case
meanwhile GF Keeps rehashing Meowth to have too many regional forms Meowth has enough evos to fill an entire team There's Lucky Cat Meowth Bad Luck Cat Meowth Viking Cat Meowth and Long Cat Meowth
One thing that i noticed was that it wasn't only dachsbun's breed that had connection/roots with Germany Dachsbun's breads, replacing his ears, are based on the Vianinha/Viana Portuguese bread variant that had inspiration on the original Vienna or Kaiser rolls from Germany. The Vianinha variant is more faithful to the buns Dachsbun has on it's his ears, while the original Viena roll has a spiral cut in the middle of the bun, that more closely resembles Fidough's ears. Both are different but, in their own ways, they are trying to cut/create a shape of a flower in the bread. Thought it was an interesting thing to point out.
Missed oppritunity **In my opinion** to have gamefreak let maschiff be named, *"Woofian"* from Woof and Ruffian but I do like the name and i always thought Maschiff was a pug from the way it looks (EDIT: I Also think that The shinies of the greavard line is inspired by the Ol' yeller story because Dead dogs having yellow fur)
oh, that reminds me of the story of hachi, but that dog went to a train station every day. *feeling kinda teary eyed thinking about it* and Orion from men in black. hes a cat, but he refused to leave his master's side when everybody thought he was dead. *tearing up more thinking of the look on his face when he actually did die* Q^Q
The moment Greavard was revealed I instantly knew I had to get one and name it Moby after my dad's Maltese puppy because I mean... shaggy white dog, c'mon. He was on my Scarlet playthrough team. I also have a Daschbun on my Violet playthrough team and her name is Leah for obvious reasons lmfao.
When you said wiener dogs were used for fox hunting later on it made me think that Dachsbun might be used for the same thing seeing how it counters every fox Pokémon except Alolan Ninetales
I physically POGGED when i heard Barcelona being pronounced right!! In fact, all the Spanish words were pronounced very well!! Even the hard Rs!! Good job Lockstin!! Ps: woof woof bark bark bark yap
It’s always fun to find another Myth about a procession of Ghosts that can kill you if you get to close. It’s weirdly unifying to hear multiple similar myths from around the globe. I know them as the Night Marchers, but there are Greek, Norse, Japanese, and many other interpretations of this undead hiking group!
What's also fascinating is they're all usually neutral at most, they just accidentally kill you for looking at them, it's kind of like how there's a yeti type creature in so many cultures. There has to be a connection somewhere
I have a few dogs of my own and honestly, all of the Paldea Doggos remind me of them. We have a Golden Retriever puppy that looks like Dachsbun, a Pyrenees Mountain Dog mix that is the spiting image of Mabosstiff (I love her so much) and... and an older dog... who isn't feeling too good... That aside, I really like all the new dogs, especially Mabosstiff. Even though it's supposed to be this mean, mafia mastiff, it's my kinda dog: lovable where it counts, powerful when it needs to be and will follow you to a wherever you go. Also, Arven's story broke me, because having a sick or hurt doggo is probably one of the saddest feelings a human can have. On Arceus, Arven deserves every happiness, every good thing. Good on him for never giving up on his good boy, who never gave up on him.
My favorite would be the Fidough line, they are cute, I like both forms in their line mostly equally, I love how well Fairy type fits them since they help with farming crops, smell nice, and are dough that are usually made into treats which fits the cutesy/positive feels of fairy types, and I love how it feels the most fitting when it comes to it’s transition from first form into evolution going from little dough pup into big capable bread hound!
As a dog person, I'd gladly welcome even more of them ^^' And, as my family got a poodle, I'd absolutely love a new poodle Pokémon that doesn't look like a hekkin' fashion doll :3
Mabosstiff must be my favorite of all the canine Pokémon. I love big dogs and I cannot lie, especially “scary” dogs like mastiffs and pitbulls, because in spite of common misconception, big scary dogs are some of the best behaved. After all, when you have a bad reputation you need to do whatever you can to make yourself look good to others. Hence why I like that Mabosstiff is a big scary Dark type dog that’s a big ol’ sweetheart that will only hurt a fly if said fly is six feet tall and can fire poison lasers from its deadly stinger. Plus Maschiff gives off a Big Pittie Energy, which I enjoy thoroughly. Even Greavard don’t mean to hurt people, and presumably they learn to control their soul sapping ability as Houndstone because all they want to be is good doggies.
Thanks for mentioning the German name of Dachsbun. Hefel (Fidough) and Backel are my favorites of the new dog Pokémon. Maybe of all dog Pokémon in general. I am also in love with all these details. I died of cuteness when my Fidough evolved and its name is helping me out getting through my work. My co-worker who is also a Pokémon fan said I should take out the Dachsbun because they were well baked. I named my Dachsbun "Hermann" which is a dough it grows thanks to their yield and bacteria and you can pass them to a friend or neighbor who also can feed the dough to make it grow and you can make a yummy cake of the Hermann Teig and you can still save some dough or pass it again. I rather baked my Hermann. I got a Fidough caught in a rare ball so I bred a Shiny an traded the other dogs away with the fitting nickname.
Could mabosstiff also be inspired by St Bernard dogs? As they come from around Italy (like the mafia) and a really famous St Bernard dog book is Cujo (Also explains more of the dark typing) and cujo is an old Portuguese word, so it all kinda connects up
These dogs are so cute! I actually made a slideshow on Los Cadejos for Spanish class this week, comparing them to the Cù-Sìth. I wondered why they decided to give Arven a Mabosstiff even though it’s supposed to be the mean one, but this video taught me a lot.
Anyone else notice the gen 9 dog trio (no, not Wugtrio) have a sort of pseudo-starter type triangle going on? Ghost < Dark < Fairy, kinda like the Alolan starter evos.
The second I saw Mabostiff I immediately thought of my irl dog, it looks almost exactly like him, right down to the massive eyebrows, which immediately made me fall in love with it, and I swear, in my second playthrough I will use the Mabostiff line and I will name it Bruce after my irl dog
Fun fact in the UK wirehaired dashounds are commonly called teckles still in the country sports community (though they tend to be slightly differently built since they're bred for function before looks)
Spanish Guy here, Fun Fact: La santa campiña is more common in the North, that's why Greavard appears at Montenevera (Hozkailu in the Spanish version) and in the North Area. And Fidough ensaimadas, could be based on La dama de Elche. An Iberian sculpture with the same hair loop
Guess obstagoon isn't in Gen 9 because it's afraid of dachsbun, a badger-hunting dog whose fairy type overpowers its dark type certainly doesn't seem like something obstagoon would want to come across! Not to mention, it'd probably do pretty well against typhlosion, being fireproof.
I'm in love with this video, such information much fluffy. I think Paldea gave us the best Dogs & birds; loved the fact España has so much connection to the whole world
The note about dog-friendly eating establishments throughout Spain (and other places, including Australia) provides insight into why Pokémon sit with their Trainers in Every Wich Way sandwich bars. 🥪 Many of them even have little beds right next to the table, and the animations are _so_ on-point! Some Pokémon yap as the Trainer tucks in, hoping for a little taste, while others maintain a fixed-gaze vigil on their human’s lunch, to the point they don’t even acknowledge when you try to talk to ‘em, just like real dogs! 🐶 Arguably the cutest by far are the ones all snuggled up in those soft, cosy beds, snoozing happily while their bipedal best bud bites into a beautifully baked baguette brimming with all the trimmings… *_(stomach growls)_* …okay, _maybe_ it’s time for a bitz’ o’ breakfast, heheh… 😅
Maschiff and mabostiff are literally the walgreen toy that looks sad but then you push a button and it looks angry YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHICH THING IM TALKING ABOUT
I fell in love with little Maschiff the moment I saw it in game for the first time. I noticed the anime delinquent reference immediately. What an adorable rascal
Hilariously, I heard that Eevee aren't based on anything in particular because the original idea was meant to evoke that feeling of seeing some small fluffy thing in your neighborhood that didn't belong there. Was it a cat? A dog? A fox? Maybe a rabbit? Some large rodent? All you can say is it was a brown fluffy thing that ran off.
Paldea has so many cute doggos, silly puppers and wholesome woofers. We really are blessed with variety in man's best friend this gen of Pokemon, you are doing yourself a disservice by not having at least one goodest boy on your team. I'll always be a cat person at heart, but dogs are so universally loved I can't help but hold them in high regard as well. 🐶
Fidough and Dachsbun are definitely my favorites (though Arven's Mabostiff grew on me quite a bit for story reasons). One of the first pokemon I caught in Scarlet was Fidough. I named her Honeybun, and she tends to be a mainstay on my team.
As a German I laughed throughout the Dackel part (and got reminded of Hausmeister Krause, a German comedy TV show revolving around a dachshund-loving janitor...pure child nostalgia 😄)
yeah, the music and the pronunciation is always funny ^^ And an American talking about our Dackel used for hunting and then calling it a wiener-dog and being confused for the sausage dog word, which is also quite funny as Wienerle being a word for a German sausage type xD
Another reference to hound stone would maybe be Hachikō, a similar story about a akita inu who had an owner then the owner passes, after death, he waited for his owner until it died. Then it was memorialized in a statue of him in Shibuya Station in Japan
When you were talking about Gen 6 and 7, was the vastly lowered quality an intentional choice or what happened there? That looks strange coming from everything being smooth beforehand and going to being smooth again from Gen 9 on.
I remember not liking Greavard's design that much when it was announced, but then I realized it looked like a dog I had when I was a child that passed away, now I love them, they're my little zombie puppy
Always wondered why there was so many dogs...heck i used two dogs on my team alone. Definately my favorite is Greavard and Houndstone. I enjoyed using Oreh the Houndstone. From just a good team member to a remembrance to Hero my dog that passed a while back, and though Hero was a drastically different breed and a male compared to my female houndstone it was still nice to use him. Getting a shiny one also is nice plus to why i like it.
I used a dachsbun on my team Fairy typing means it's really bulky, combine its immunities to both fire and dragon and you got a mon that can take a lot of hits
we had 2 electric dogs in sword/shield. we have 1 dark, 1 dark+fire and 1 fire dog in violet/scarlet. If anything, i'd like the next generation to have more variety in dogs so I can make a competent DOG SLED THEMED TEAM
Hey you forgot a huge bit of inspiration that connects the three lines together, and that’s the folktale of “The Black Dog”. This spirit is described as a big dog with black shaggy fur, and depending on the region of Europe (and or the USA) you’re hearing the folktale from “The Black Dog” is depicted as one of these three entities: 1.) The fairy-dog (Fidough) 2.) A demonic hellhound (Maschiff) 3.) Or a peaceful spirit dog (Grevard)
Small addition about Dachshunds as well, they recently found out that they performed in the Roman Colloseum as well, so the breed has been around for a while, and it has been used for more than just hunting badgers even back then. Also... makes them less of a German breed of dogs and more of a Germanic breed... if they really were bred primarily in that area back then.
I just want to congratulate Lockstin for how much his Spanish pronunciation has improved 😄 Specially when saying Barcelona, Santa Campaña, and Cadejo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I thought the large number of dogs was also a reference to the Canary Islands, which pulls it's name from Canis (The bird being named Canary was due to it being found there afterwards) as there were plenty of dogs living on the Islands
@14:10 I'm glad you put up a pic of Hachiko because that so was a tale of pain. A dog whose owner had died and this dog waited 10 years at a train station (the last place it saw its owner alive) just waiting for him to come home from work (the owner was a professor at a neighboring town's university in Japan. The dog walked him to the train station every day. The owner had a heart attack at work and died. He never came home on the train.)

@Chris Smith Oh, man. Idk. I don't play competitively. I was thinking about Mobastiff, Dauchsbun, Greavard, Lycanrock, Arcanine, and Glaceon.
I had both Dachbun and Mabostiff on my first team , Fifi the Dachbun and Helga the Mabostiff

Fun fact: in the academy there are books(duh) one of these books talks about Ryme, the book says that when she was a child, the dog pokemon of the family passed away but not long after was reborn as a ghost pokemon ,so that greavard that dances on top of the beatbox in the middle of the battle-or dj g-rave- is Rymes childhood dog.and Tymes too I guess
Also I just realized that this book reveals that greavards dex entry is wrong(the dex says:it is said that a dog pokemon that died without ever interacting with a human was reborn as this Pokémon)so that’s another fun fact
Either the dex entry is outdated or it's not accurate though pokedex entries don't always make sense lol

I feel like I should mention his pronunciation of "Wackeldackel." Shouldn't the W have a V sound and the A's have more an "ah" sound?
@@Chaos89P Oh yeah, that's right. Totally forgot about that, thanks.
Not to mention, it could be a reference to both beer and bread. A very common German stereotype.
My first shiny in violet was a female Maschiff that I named Princess, I found her pretty early in the game as it was near the bug gym town. It actually took me a second to realize it was shiny because my first thought for some reason was "gender varient?".
One of my favorite things with Houndstone's shiny is how it resembles a buried skeleton, with the draping fur resembling dead grass.
I’m surprised Greavard s shiny isn’t the regular color scheme because white dogs I know are always dirty AF lol
I thought the pun Pure Bread Purebreds also went into their concept.

One thing that i noticed was that it wasn't only dachsbun's breed that had connection/roots with Germany
Dachsbun's breads, replacing his ears, are based on the Vianinha/Viana Portuguese bread variant that had inspiration on the original Vienna or Kaiser rolls from Germany.

My favorite of the new dog Pokemon is Gaschbuns hands down but I also love Houndstone.

As they come from around Italy (like the mafia) and a really famous St Bernard dog book is Cujo (Also explains more of the dark typing) and cujo is an old Portuguese word, so it all kinda connects up
You can never have too many dog Pokémon.
These dogs are so cute! I actually made a slideshow on Los Cadejos for Spanish class this week, comparing them to the Cù-Sìth. I wondered why they decided to give Arven a Mabosstiff even though it’s supposed to be the mean one, but this video taught me a lot.

Hey you forgot a huge bit of inspiration that connects the three lines together, and that’s the folktale of “The Black Dog”. This spirit is described as a big dog with black shaggy fur, and depending on the region of Europe (and or the USA) you’re hearing the folktale from “The Black Dog” is depicted as one of these three entities:
1.) The fairy-dog (Fidough)
2.) A demonic hellhound (Maschiff)
3.) Or a peaceful spirit dog (Grevard)
Small addition about Dachshunds as well, they recently found out that they performed in the Roman Colloseum as well, so the breed has been around for a while, and it has been used for more than just hunting badgers even back then. Also... makes them less of a German breed of dogs and more of a Germanic breed... if they really were bred primarily in that area back then.
