I always thought foretress was based on the Da Vinci tank with multiple cannons sticking out at different angles beneath a pale wood shell/carapace. the cannons and metal mechanical parts explain the steel typing and explosive moves.
Talk about a suppressed memory surge. When I was a kid, we had a chestnut tree in my front yard, and one day I opened one and swore I saw a bug crawling around inside. Lots of different insects lose their mouth parts as they metamorphize. It's pretty morbid, but plenty of them use their "adult" stages just to find a mate, lay eggs, and die. Many different moths and especially mayflies are known for this.
Here's a cool fact! The Luna Moth has no digestive system and a vestigial mouth! It's only purpose is to mate and die in its extremely short life span. And they look super pretty too!
Don't know who said this line, but there's a quote that goes something like, "A butterfly is a caterpillar's way of making more caterpillars." It seems strange to us because our lives are so long, and we're mostly the same creature our whole lives. To an insect, continuity of an individual isn't as important as continuity of the species.
I've always assumed that the trash form was steel type because the materials it uses to make the bag were man-made but this is an interesting way to look at it as well.
12:50 it's also interesting that both chestnuts and some pinecones are known to 'explode' in certain conditions; chestnuts when roasting them without piercing the shell, while some pinecones burst or pop open. Which adds to the hand grenade and cannon ball aspect of the design
I really wish Wormadam had a Bug/Ice form. Sinnoh has a lot of snowy routes to evolve it on and snow actually IS a great heat insulator. Little igloo bug. :3 Also everyone pronounced this Pokémon's name wrong. It's all-female, it's pronounced like the word madame.

All of these biologically accurate pokemon origins makes you wonder how many employees at gamefreak are specifically just biologists and not at all artists or engineers etc. Pretty cool to imagine
My headcanon is when pokemon designs were on the table Mothim was supposed to be in the dustox line originally. Mainly cause it has that sort of "fairy" body with tiny arms and legs the same as beautifly, and at some point dustox and Mothim got switched, sorta like Butterfree and venomoth probably did.
1:31 There was a huge missed opportunity to do Sinnohan Variants in BDSP along with having Hisuian Pokemon appear in the Grand Underground if you had a save for Legends.
Another interesting fact about death's-head hawkmoths: they squeak! As a defense mechanism!!! It's adorable! And i freaking love them! I'm hoping to get a tattoo of one eventually
8:15 it makes sense, but I do have to argue that the fiberglass would still have to count as the steel-type thing itself since they do the same thing with Alolan Diglett and Dugtrio with their fiberglass hairs
For Wormadam Trash I always just assumed it was Bubble Gum and other waste products cause it had to make its bag out of litter, hence the steel typing.
my question is why does forretress' shell in scarlet and violet look like it's made of metal all of a sudden, seems they're really laying into the cannon ball aspect of the design.
Mentioning that he looks like a Spanish fortress makes me realize how much sense it makes that he's in the Paldea Region, I wonder if it could be a reason for other older pokemon to be there... maybe video idea?
Hey, just wanna say I love your video’s, they always give me a boost in eagerness to learn and energy. Keep up the fun and educational content, they certainly keep me, a bored student, more curios and help me better than most teachers. Thanks ❤
0:14 the fact that you used Jake and the neverland pirates ship for the boat reference makes this even funnier than it needs to be! Props to the original thoughts you had as a kid honestly!
Wait, if Forretress is supposed to be another bag worm/larva, why didn't it get the Mothim/Wormadam treatment and get an actual adult look for its final evo? Maybe in a future gen it would get a third evo?
Well, it's a fictional beast and we already got one that turns into a moth. I think there's room for something that's based on the larval form of a real animal while staying similar to it and not turning into the adult form of the real animal.
Everyone talks about how Forretress looks like a giant clam, so I'd love to see a convergent form that *is* a giant clam, they could call it Mollustress. (And instead of Pineco, its pre-evolution could be some bivalve that resembles a pinecone, and it shall be called Marineco) XD
1:08 "It was a time when game freak was significantly more known for putting in programming mistakes... I see not much has changed" lol the shade! that line killed me... i am now a ghost type.
What is Forretress? It's goss, that's what it is. Those fleshy "cannons" gave me nightmares as a kid. I'm glad this video was mostly about another evolutionary line tbh.
Hey Lockstin, love the videos, curious question that just popped into my head, do you happen to suffer from colorblindness? This isn't a dig at all, I just happened to notice that around 10:55 when you were eluding to Mothim's color being an orange much like its real-world counterpart, the photo shown in the top left looks distinctly green in tone to me! I suppose it could just be the saturation of the picture and a whole new white/gold or blue/black dress situation, but I just thought that it might be neat to uncover a little Lockstin lore. Sorry if you've mentioned this in the past before if you do happen to be colorblind! Keep up the great work and thanks for the informative vids as always!
And with their ability to learn Spikes, let's not forget about exploding caltrops. After finding one that reminded me of it the other day, I feel that Forretress could also pull inspiration from iron-oxide concretions. Formed in layers and sometimes containing soft red or yellow minerals, it's not uncommon for these rocks to be mistaken for fossil nuts or shells. This ties into Forretress' red (or yellow if Shiny) core as well as its resemblance to a walnut/chestnut and clam, and could explain why Brock has one in the anime. There are also concretions known as "cannonball concretions," tying it into your cannonball theory.
@@blazechaos212 True, but that could've been decided because it evolves into a Pokémon that is (potentially) influenced by a type of rock. Kind of like how Misty has Azurill and Lana Eevee.
My theory about trash cloak burmy is that it’s bubblegum, a common type of litter. it’s steel type because litter is very common in a city, a very steel type place
After seeing the Forretress plushy, I can only think of Chuggaaconroy's LP of Pokémon Coloseum complaning that there was no merch of it that he could find... 10 years ago! I can't believe that it's been 10 years since then, but I digress.
New Lockstin arthropod video, today is very gud :) I actually love the Wormadam line so I’m hyped to see this! I remember Wonder Trading Dream Ball HA Burmy in Gen 7 since they were only possible to get through breeding, and snagging a few fun wins with Sucker Punch Trash Cloak!
Burmy fuses with plants and becomes grass type. Floette fuses with a plant and stays fairy. It just seems odd, but it is the only 3-stage monofairy besides the cleffa line.
12:10 with subs on, you can read talk about a Bug/Dark regional variant.. glimpse at an older version of the script, maybe originally written before Lokix was revealed?
I actually have a different explanation for the trash burmy. The trash the burmy collects some soil along with it and when combined the metal and soil create a reddish-pink color. To me that makes more sense for a trash form and gaining steel type compared to just insulation.
Lockstin, if you’re listening can you please make a Flabébé video? I love Flabébé and I would like to know more about it’s origins. Keep making great content!
And I was just thinking about the Pineco line a week ago to potentially do some art about. Does a week ago count for coincidence? For an obscure pokemon like this, I think it does.
I remember in 1st-2nd school, we had i think 4 chestnut trees on a lil' hill in front on the playground, and we used to throw them around.. or at each other.. and i remember being FASCINATED by the green spiky shells, usually i would find some still mostly in the shells, that *just* had fallen from the tree, with like one crack they got from falling, and trying to open them up, and it was REALLY DIFFICULT (tho i *was* a 5-7 y.o. and not very athletic as is) so Forretress being steel type not just because its a fortress/cannonball thing makes me really happy bc at least SOMEONE also thought that opening those fuckers is like a war in it of itself (or I'm just grasping at straws in denial)
5:34 Funfact: There was a wife and husband team "exploiting" plaster worms. She a Goldsmith by trade and he a hobby entomologist came up with the idea to breed the worms in a controlled environment with nothing but tiny gold balls or jewel shards to make their bags with. These were popular for a while before people realized that finalizing these pendants, earrings and whatnot involved poisoning the poor worms and carefully prying their corpses from the bag they had crafted themselves. The two were convicted for animal cruelty. Which was quite significant. As bugs are usually classified as "unable to feel".
I needed this vid. it always confounded me why a Bug Pinecone turned into what seemed to be some sort of Steel Giant Clam. if Forretress is some kinda nut that makes a lot more sense :)
Always though trash form was made of bubblegum because of the fact that gum can always be found on the ground and is pink and lumpy but that really does not equate to steel type lol! It would make more sense to be fairy ( not a type at the time) but is typically seen in food pokemon. Or poison because of trash lol
Some interesting details about the Shellos and Gastrodon forms in Scarlet and Violet: The dex entry for West shellos states that there´s more of them (in current times) than in the past and the one for East shellos says that the east form is currently decreasing in number. However, this situation is reversed with the dex entries for Gastrodon: The dex entry for West gastrodon says that (in the past) this form used to be by far the most numerous one, while the one for East Gastrodon states that this one was less numerous in the past but that now is currently increasing in number. So you have west shellos going up in number but its evolution, West Gastrodon, going down and then East Shellos going down in number but East Gastrodon going up. So, why this happens? Considering that some dex entries (like the ones from SwSh) state that shellos physique is affected by its habitat (warm oceans causes west shellos and cold oceans causes east shellos) the explanation as to why the west pre--evolution is more abundant and why the East evolution is more abundant at the same time is pretty interesting: Either due to Paldea´s natural weather (or even due to global warming in the pokemon world causing more warm oceans), one version doesn´t need to evolve that often and the other one needs to evolve in order to survive in a least favorable weather. So you find more pre-evolutions of the west version by comparison to the east version for that reason. Because the East shellos form (that is the one more suited for cold oceans) tends to evolve more often in order to survive into the (currently warmer) oceans of Paldea/the pokemon world and thus are more common to find evolved as gastrodon while West Shellos doesn´t need to evolve into West Gastrodon that often to survive because it´s already into a warmer ocean. And thus, its evolution is less common to be seen.
There's bagworms in my neighborhood. I've seen them hanging off juniper trees in the treeline. First time I saw one I said "Hey it's a Burmy! 😀" I dont know anything about them, but I love seeing them.

12:29 LOCKSTIN YOU MADE ME DROP A GLASS AND NOW THERE ARE GLASS SHARDS ALL AROUND ME AND I HAVE TO JUST STAND IN MY KITCHEN CONTEMPLATING AN ESCAPE PLAN
FUN FACT!: Remoraid and Octillary are a reference to weaponry advancement Remoraid is a gun(more noticeable in the beta design) And Octillary is a tank(again a bit more noticeable in the beta design) But since pokemon is (mostly, Phantump’s dex entry, I’m lookin at you.) kids’ game, they had to simplify the designs
i met you at portland retro gaming expo, i brought up my love for pineco and had you sign my psp copy of Big Daddy, and you told me you were making a video all about the bagworm pokemon. very excited to see it finally come out!!
I remember when I first saw wormadam and mothim, I wondered why the designers didn't do something similar with volbeat and illumise (there are some glowworms which are actually adult female fireflies which are wingless similar to female bagworms). It wasn't until quite a bit later that it hit on me that of course illumise has to have wings - it's a *flapper*!
I've never been a fan of bug types AT ALL but this video really gave me a newfound appreciation for Burmy, Wormadam, and Mothim. Thank you for your explanations!

(...Except, I have a Samurott ♀ named Juturna 🥰)
Are we sure this isn’t a Burmy episode?
Loved the Owens Corning shoutout lol, that's a staple factory in my hometown and like 20 of my family members work there.
"You see, plants kind of don't move on their own-
AHUUGGH!"
Forretress is one of my favorite pokemon. Super cool typing and he just looks cool af.
Will there be a pyroar episode?
Always though trash form was made of bubblegum because of the fact that gum can always be found on the ground and is pink and lumpy but that really does not equate to steel type lol! It would make more sense to be fairy ( not a type at the time) but is typically seen in food pokemon. Or poison because of trash lol
the nutshack motif playing after you said nuts gave me heart palpitations
Some interesting details about the Shellos and Gastrodon forms in Scarlet and Violet:
The dex entry for West shellos states that there´s more of them (in current times) than in the past and the one for East shellos says that the east form is currently decreasing in number.
However, this situation is reversed with the dex entries for Gastrodon:
The dex entry for West gastrodon says that (in the past) this form used to be by far the most numerous one, while the one for East Gastrodon states that this one was less numerous in the past but that now is currently increasing in number.
So you have west shellos going up in number but its evolution, West Gastrodon, going down and then East Shellos going down in number but East Gastrodon going up.
So, why this happens?
Considering that some dex entries (like the ones from SwSh) state that shellos physique is affected by its habitat (warm oceans causes west shellos and cold oceans causes east shellos) the explanation as to why the west pre--evolution is more abundant and why the East evolution is more abundant at the same time is pretty interesting:
Either due to Paldea´s natural weather (or even due to global warming in the pokemon world causing more warm oceans), one version doesn´t need to evolve that often and the other one needs to evolve in order to survive in a least favorable weather.
I used wormadam in my pokemon legends playthrough, and now it's a favorite of mine...
I also had cherrim so I had to hunt for it anyways
You should totally do a video on Aron and that whole line. Even a single young Aron is tough enough to upend an 18 wheel semi truck with ease. And then proceed to eat it!!
12:29
LOCKSTIN YOU MADE ME DROP A GLASS AND NOW THERE ARE GLASS SHARDS ALL AROUND ME AND I HAVE TO JUST STAND IN MY KITCHEN CONTEMPLATING AN ESCAPE PLAN
The plant moving on its own made me HOWL
great video, I would however like to point out carcasses where incendiary not explosive, thou that is a rarely thought of distinction.
Man I wasnt expecting this but Im glad I watched it
Clicked on the video for the thumbnail alone lol, a creative thumbnail like that is what I love to see on UA-cam rather than clickbait
This is the most cursed thumbnail from this channel for a mile.
*by a mile btw
"The 10 year old completing the pokedex doesn't know that"
Now that's, pretty funny.
I always thought pink wormadam was covered in poop. Because in Digimon, anime poop was depicted as a pink ice cream swirl shape thing.
FUN FACT!: Remoraid and Octillary are a reference to weaponry advancement
Remoraid is a gun(more noticeable in the beta design)
And Octillary is a tank(again a bit more noticeable in the beta design)
But since pokemon is (mostly, Phantump’s dex entry, I’m lookin at you.) kids’ game, they had to simplify the designs
i always thought forretress was more based on da vinci's tank but lockstin's explaination made more sense
i met you at portland retro gaming expo, i brought up my love for pineco and had you sign my psp copy of Big Daddy, and you told me you were making a video all about the bagworm pokemon. very excited to see it finally come out!!
"[Insulation] sounds like the perfect material if it wasn't full of fiberglass."
>this episode was sponsored by Helix Sleep
lol. lmao, even
I agree on the shaking trees in legends arceus. trying to get a specific pokemon from shaking trees or rocks was super annoying.
I really love that you are explaining the design of the most random pokemon xD
"Trees don't actually move... AAAAH" really got me laughing.
