Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out! - Ігри
Despite playing since gen 2, my very first shiny was a Stunky in PLA, my second was a male Salandit in Scarlet.
This sponsor-free video is brought to you by me! We just joined the UA-cam Members program thingy, so you can join and show us support that way if you so choose! Doing so gets you access to special emoji and other commenting privileges... If I understand how it works.
If you've been playing since gen 2 how did you not got the shiny gyarados?
@@JZeraGren855 I think he's counting shiny Pokemon that were encountered by chance and not one that is not part of the game's story.
Love your videos I learn a lot more than just Pokémon
Lokstin you got the nacli line wrong spansih pyrite is formed in cubes dude
Its literally fake gold
Lockstin calling out me and 80% of his audience with that title lmao
bro got us💀💀💀
The neurodivergency is strong with this whole audience. I should know.
Autism gang 👫🤚
The rock has been lifted! Bugs, scatter!
Can someone explain to me what shiny Pokemon has to do with autism? Genuinely asking because I don't get it 😅
A really fun fact about Hydrapple is that it and its pre-evolution´s signature move, Syrup Bomb, actually looks different when shiny, becoming a golden bomb instead of red.
Wish they’d do stuff like that for more shinies
They also do that for dragon darts and mind blown.
Another detail about Hydrapple that wasn’t mentioned is that if you look at the apple on its horn, it also has the green apple the other Applin family members have!
@@user-kk5sr8jd4b awsome!
This also happened with Dragapult and Dragon Darts in SwSh!
The white in Miraidon is, in my opinion, also a reference to a minimalist futuristic aesthetic that loves white.
I just started the video so I did not know that it was white but I can guarantee you right now it's a reference to the white serpent. White serpent lore is epic and I encourage everyone to go out and find every story about the white serpent that you can find because it's super ancient and super cool and there's about a million renditions of it some of which are directly opposed to each other. In fact there's some who speculate that the white serpent is the oldest deity known to mankind as a depiction of it or at least something that after thousands of years under the ground is a white serpent is one of the oldest artifacts that we've found of modern humans. And this thing was not small I believe there was more than one and they're huge and we know almost nothing about them, but they do weirdly line up with some of the white serpent lore.
Fun fact about Orcas: their name originally was meant to be "Killers of Whales" or "whale killers" but due to mistranslations it became "Killer whales"
They are Panda Dolphins.
Their Danish name translates as blubber stealer (spækhugger, spæk=blubber/fat, hugger=one who cleaves/steals). This name was given to them by whalers who were annoyed by their ability to eat a whale before the whalers could get it onto their ships.
Another fun fact: the reason for false killer whale's name despite looking nothing like orcas in size or coloration is because early naturalists described them with only skull materials and they find their skeletal structure resembles that of a killer whale.
I see you too follow that etymology nerd,
@@PhaythGaming who?
I think the Paradox form's colours can have an extra meaning too. The past ones mostly use the same shiny colorations as their previous pokemons. Because, after all, you cannot change the past. But the future shinies are all without paint (even Miraidon), because the future is yet to be painted, it's in our hands to paint it.
With Flamigo also based on lawn ornaments, it being paler could also reference sun bleaching. The interior of its wings stay the darker pink of it's regular colouration
Or perhaps the Flamigo simply hasn't eaten enough shrimp or algae to gain its pinkness.
Oh that's a really good point. I always wondered why it was so meh and why they didn't do a white one since if you don't feed a flamingo enough tiny red crustaceans they turn white. Sun bleaching explains everything. I think though I'm going to have to go with the option of referring when the Chinese just look really cool versus being a reference. It would be nice if we could have both but I am always disappointed when a shiny is just like really meh.
The shiny future Paradoxes being unpainted versions also makes sense with the rarity, since factory rejects of mass-produced things tend to be much rarer to find.
Additionally, the reason only the metal parts change while the neon "energy" stays the same might be because, if the latter is what keeps them running, a difference in its color may indicate a malfunction, thus not letting them battle properly, which can't happen ingame as a shiny Pokemon is functionally the same as a regular one.
I don't think Lockstin has ever explained why Iron Jugulis's entire faces are LED screens instead of just its eyes...
Not just factory rejects, but, also prototypes typically do not get painted. For, they are no final projects.
I still would've liked even a slight neon color change. It makes them less interesting if they all have the same gimmick again after mostly being just robot versions of existing Pokémon. Iron valiant is the only major twist visually since it combines both final evos.
@@jesusaguirre2150 Only visually though, they have much more variety when it comes to their upgrades.
2:55 How do you talk about shiny Spydops and yet not even *MENTION* Spider-Man... like, it's literally a perfect match!!!!
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned
Ikr? That was my first thought when I saw it!
Looks more like Kane's Scarlet Spider if you ask me...
Unless you are talking about the Far From Home suit in the MCU. But, who would really think of a one movie suit that's only change is to swap the iconic red and blue for red and black.
Not to mention, it's called SPYdops, and the red thread looks like those security lasers in movies
it looks less like Spider-Man and more like Deadpool with the red and black
One of my favorite moments in a video is when CandyEevee who I knew in my shiny hunting days said “looking back it’s kinda crazy how many autistic people are in the shiny hunting community” and went. Damn. I could’ve been diagnosed years ago if I knew that. Cause it’s true holy heck we got the Tism Skism
What video does CandyEvie say that in, out of curiosity?
18:33 Fun Fact: The name Golden Gate does not refer to the Bridge's color, it is the name of the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, which is called the Golden Gate Strait.
Lockstin! My brother in Arceus! Lokix shiny is a direct reference to Kamen Rider Zero One, which is why just the mask area is painted yellow. Zero One was the beginning of Kamen Rider’s Reiwa era and in considered a soft reboot of sorts.
Yes! I was looking if someone else already mentioned that.
Man I just commented the same thing and now I find your comment

@@MrAuthor3DS there's a variety of catnip called catmint that has purple flowers

9:10 It also might be based on the famous black suit Superman wore on his return since that is what Palafin is based on
Or Batman? Just a thought. (Easily might not be)
I'd love a series talking on ScarVio's Pokemon textures specifically. While it probably wouldn't be super long, it could have some interesting discoveries, like how Shiny Magikarp has a metallic sheen as compared to normal Magikarp's scales.
Same with Rellor's ball of "mud".
or shiny Dragonair's pearls becoming a metallic copper
Okay, I actually have a bit of a tinfoil hat theory in regards to Koraidon's shiny.
Remember way back when Junichi Masuda went on a trip to Portugal and not only said that he loved the restaurant Nando's but that the rooster they use for their logo, The Rooster of Barcelos, would be a good concept for a pokémon? The very same bird whose primary colours are black with white, red and yellow as accent colours?
I theorise this to be the true origin, at least partially, for Koraidon's shiny, maybe not even that, it could have inspired Koraidon outright, it just lines up so well. That concept for a rooster pokémon IS Koraidon. It even has many rooster-esque features like a massive feathery head crest, huge tail feathers and even technically wings (that sprout from its head of coarse).
You heard it here first. Koraidon is part rooster. You're welcome.
I.... I'm not sure how I feel about this lol
As a zoologist i prefer when shinies reference the real world counterparts
Fun Fact: While hero form Palafin’s Shiny resembles an Orca, it’s also a reference of how uncommon it is for superheroes to wear black in their costumes. Sure there are a couple like Black Widow, Batman, and Black Panther, but considering black is a color not usually associated with heroism and justice, it’s makes sense that shiny Palafin’s hero form would be black.

Palafin‘s black shiny most likely isn’t a reference to orcas. It’s main inspiration is superman and superman usually wears his iconic blue suit but also changed to a black suit at one point which allowed him to absorb the sun rays better and heal quicker
For Archaludon, I think it’s based on the unovan skyarrow bridge, specifically the walkway the player uses. It has similar bright blue and gray colors, and follows through with unovan themeing
Absolutely drove me nuts that the shiny image and standard image were not consistently on the same side throughout the video. For some of the Pokemon, I couldn't make out which was the shiny until just before you moved on
Same. It was hard to tell for any ones that look very similar
There’s more to the Tauros shiny. It’s one of the only shinies that change texture with the darker part actually being a more skin texture than the original slightly furry texture
2:30 Yeah! I think the only other brazilian mons are Paldean Tauros, Hitmontop and Whimsicott. Paldean Tauros cuz it's based on a brazilian folklore legends named "The Black Face Bull", the shiny even has it's face getting even darker to confirm that. Whimsicott's Pokedex's entry says it travels in little tornados, and due to it's more tan skin and also trickster nature leads me to believe it's based on Saci Pereré, also a brazilian folklore legend. And Hitmontop's japanese name is Capoeira, which is a brazilian martial art.
Why The Golden Gate Bridge is called that, and why it's Red:
The reason why the Golden Gate bridge is red is because it was purposely painted red in the 1930s. Bethlehem Steel at its foundries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, had the steel coated with a red lead primer to increase safety and visibility of the structure.
The name “golden” came from its yellowish-orange color when seen from a distance but this has faded over the years. Basically from a far off distance, the bridge had a Golden color but it slowly turned more red the closer you got to it.
I thought it was because California is the "Golden State".
Yes to the first part (and the primer color was chosen also for the aesthetic contrast). But the second part, the strait it crosses was called the Golden Gate since 1846, when John C Fremont called it "a golden gate to trade with the Orient."
No. The strait has always been known as the Golden Gate Strait.
1) The entrance to SF bay is called the Golden Gate, hence the name of the bridge that crosses that entrance.
2) I actually kinda prefer when shinies do reference something about the real world inspiration, though I also like it when it looks good and stands out.
While Koraidon is black for being in the dark about the distant past
Then what if Miraidon is white, for a blank slate yet to be written
The future paradox pokemon may look like robots but they're not literal robots. The pokedex entries just reference the fake descriptions given by the occulture magazine tabloid.
3:16 I'd definitely describe Nymble and Lokix as a more green color. It's mostly a Kamen Rider reference rather than just Tokusatsu:
» The normal coloration of the line is blue/black, common colors for describing evil characters or enemies. Thus, the shiny colors being green is a reference to Kamen Rider 1, Ichigo, as he is a human-turned-cyborg using evil technology who now fights against evil. The rare rebellious soldier to reflect the rare nature of shiny Pokémon (more likely).
» The confusion some have with Nymble and Lokix's shiny coloration being yellow or green could be a reference to Kamen Rider Zero-One, the first Rider of the Reiwa era, in which fans and official sources alike sometimes categorize the character with a green suit rather than their actual highlighter-yellow colors (less likely).
honestly I always love watching your shiny pokémon explained videos because like I would never think of these inspirations and it's just so cool to see all of the cute little details that they may or may not have put into the game
I love when the Shinies have some reason for their Shiny colouration. Sure, cool is cool and all, and I do also love the old trend of "blue thing become pink thing" or "Grass becomes autumn colours", but there's something special about lines like Smoliv or Rellor where it's just smaller changes that affect the origin of the pokemon.
I am indeed very biased, but I personally think that the Sprigatito line's shiny forms are underrated and absolutely great despite them being so subtle. The pink to purple is a very nice alternative that compliments the more cold tones of the green added. It may not be the greatest starter shiny in some eyes, but I think it's freaking awesome as far as subtle color changes go.
A star walks into a black hole but doesn't seen phased. The black hole then turns to the star and says, "I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation."
This
I like to think the shiny Tinkaton line just fashioned their hammers out of shiny Corviknight.
The color of shiny Tinkaton's hammer isn't even close to the color of shiny Corviknight.
@@trevorpacelli8056 But it is real reference ;) Tinkaton shiny is based on lore of Tinkaton and Corviknights
Was checking the comments for this cause it is the reason why Tinkaton's hammer is different
@@wiktolego No, it most definitely is not.
Isn't it actually closer to Shiny Gigantamax Corviknight specifically?
18:33 Because it goes over the Golden Gate Strait. As for why the strait is called that, it's because of trade with the east across the Pacific. Once described in 1846 as "a golden gate to trade with the orient"
Me: i should probably get some sleep, it's getting real la-wait No lockstin posted a new video
My favorite shiny from scarlet and violet both in looks and theme is hero form Palifin, I always saw it as like the Batman to Regular Palifins Superman
Not confirmed, but I'm pretty sure that in their shinys the loyal three swap their main colour with one another,
Okidogi gets orange from Fesendipity
Monkydori gets grey from okidogi
And Fesendipity gets blue from Monkeydori
3:54 I think that Maushold and Tandemaus' shinies are a reference to blue and white collar workers
Hmmm, I always thought that Shiny Spidops's string references the little lasers that spies can't touch while breaking into some highly guarded place
no way im also on the spectrum
😭
Same
I like it when shinies are a mix of both referencing real world inspirations when need be but I also like when shinies turn a different color when it is cool as well🌈
“More rights than there ever have been before”
Me someone in the south USA: ….It does not feel like that -_-
I really love that not only the original but also the shiny have some thought behind them. It really makes the shinies cooler since it isn't only a random recolor of the mons but actually are intentional.
Also worth noting when it comes to Fuecoco: apparently crocodiles really love the color pink. As in they love playing with pink objects like pink flowers
Yes! I love learning about shines and have been hunting for the Gen 9 shines. ^^ Also I love Tinkaton's shiny a lot. Edit: I like it when they both refer to real-world animals/things and just for the rule of cool.
I still want a video going over what the shiny kaskade Pokemon look like and why
Add on: 18:21 I’m pretty sure it’s the first bridge you see in black and white it has all the right colors for the most part
I like when shinies look noticeably different from their og colour schemes, but I do love it when the shiny colour comes from an actual inspiration too! Great video 👏👏👏
Shoutout to shiny Cursola. One of the very best black shinies out there.
Also, Cursola's shiny directly references Allister's color scheme. It's one of the only shinies to directly reference the colors of a Trainer.
I love that Lockstin put in a piece of media that only people from Tumblr would know all too well for Mabosstiff's shiny
Of my five years of playing pokemon, i still haven't found even *ONE* shiny
I love when the shinies are a reference to something. Really shows off that they thought about the design of the Mon and personally it’s a nice nerdy fact to show off to other Poke Fans.
Thanks for this video. I was playing Scarlet today and came across a group of Tarountula and saw something red. Might not have thought about it without knowing that’s the shiny color thanks to your video. Never came across a full odds shiny like that before.
I think that shiny Koraidon and Miraidon shinies references Zekrom and Reshiram while shiny Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti references Ho-oh, Lugia and Suicune (Gold, silver, crystal)
BRO DIDNT SAY THE OBVIOUS INSPO FOR SPIDOS BEING SPIDER-MAN!!! (This is not a hate comment, just found it confusing)
Thinking the exact same thing just now
Also, he didn't mention that grasshoppers are green, hence the lokix shiny?
Oh my gosh thank you! I've been waiting for you to do this video for so long!
4:34 SNOGGING THE DOCTOR
Shiny Toedscool's all-white color scheme might also be a reference to how it's a copy of a Gen 1 Pokemon (Tentacool) and Red and Blue were originally in black and white due to the limitations of the Gameboy, like Mimikyu's shiny.
As a Marylander, the blue crab is indeed very blue.
ALSO OUR FLAG *IS* COOL, YOU'RE WRONG.
I like it when there's a reference but I want that reference as stylized as possible - so if, for example, the IRL thing is kind of washed out, pale colors, I want the shiny Pokémon version to have those colors but bright and bold 😊 (for example I like Lechonk being a bright pink rather than a paler, more realistic pig pink)
I like it most when shinies reference something, but the most stylish reference you can make
Rellor’s ball may also be a reference to Ancient Egyptian Mythology where the Dung Beetle God Khepri rolls the sun around the sky every day.
I think the Nacli lines shiny could also possibly be inspired by butter salt used in movie theaters. It is orange and often added to popcorn when it’s being popped to make it taste extra good, I know this I work at a movie theater and I often work at the popcorn machine.
Completely unrelated, but I've noticed a good portion of your "The End" theory has come true over the years, and with the launch of ZA I'm super excited to see what you think of the lore next.
Lokix was my first shiny, so it has a special place in my heart :) also I know you said they're golden, but in game they kinda show up more green, so I just assumed they were meant to look more like regular grasshoppers
Absolutely I think shinies are coolest when they lean into the concept of the pokemon, like the caramel apples, or like pink pigs! I would love them to go even more all out tbh, gimme cool textures or patterns! Shiny Minior is probably my fave shiny for this reason
The dog from the Doge meme died this year?! Aw heck. RIP, you legend.
Also with the two legendaries. They are still on separate ends of the color spectrum, just black is the absence of all wavelengths, and white is the presence of all wavelengths at once.
18:22 to me Archaludon's colors are a reference to Skyarrow Bridge for the regular and Timeline Bridge for the shiny
17:18 The Federation isn't exactly 100% pristine you know. Star Trek Deep Space 9 made a point to deconstruct the utopian nature of the Federation and Lower Decks ran with a similar deconstruction as the entire focus (being based on the DS9-esque Star Trek: The Next Generation episode of the same name)
Shiny Dondozo also looks like a sunnyside up egg, which fits the theming of it being a chef.
Kind of surprised Lockstin didn't mention the whole red string conspiracy board trope for spydops and it's detective spy thing it has going on.
EVERY SINGLE ONE WHAT?????
Okay I am really excited for more people to learn about Woobat’s Shiny referencing how their IRL counterparts camouflage!!!
Also Spidops’s Shiny having laser webs, I felt like such a clever lil’ goober adding that to Bulbapedia
Edit: oh it’s just Gen 9 lol
I don’t think he could talk about 1000+ Pokémon in 20 minutes lol
Laser webs? What are those?
- Fidough and Dachsbun’s shiny I think more has to do with their dough-ish skin going from a generic white bread dough to a wheat bread dough.
- I agree with you about Bellibolt being based on an avocado. There’s a keto diet recipe even called “Avocado Toad in the Hole”.
White bread is made of wheat, but not whole wheat. When milling wheat for white bread they remove 28% of the kernel making the flour white.
Fidough is probably actually brown because there's been added dark malt extract or cocoa to the dough, seeing as it doesn't get a rougher texture, which a whole grain bread would have :]
60% reference and 40% style.
Agreed. Learning fun facts about cool or interesting designs is a ton of fun. It also tends to add variety so not every edgy mon becomes black and red nor does every cute mom become bright pink.
On one hand, I think it's really cool when they put thought into the looks of shinies, just like how a lot of thought goes into the base design of many Pokémon. On the other hand, my favourite shiny is Ponyta, because blue fire is just rad.
The miraidon shiny could also mean that the future is blank, and yet to be "written"
It’s the Golden Gate Bridge because it spans the Golden Gate straight.
I prefer shinies that do additional references to its inspiration. So stuff like looking more like the animal it’s based on or like stuff Tatsugiri looking like other sushi.
That moment when you realize shinies are so rare is because they won't be able to camouflage and then get picked off by predators😔
Outing myself as a tumblr user but LOCKSTIN GONCHAROV REFERENCE LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Man I was abt to go to sleep when I saw this upload guess I'm stayin up longer lmao
Howdy! I love your stuff! Just wanted to pop in and say that I am a HUGE rider fan and for Dooms Geats (One of the “Gold” riders you spoke of) that’s a Fan Edit and not the official image of him. 3:18, also personally I think shiny Lokix is more based on Kamen Rider Zero-One or Masked Rider Ichigo (Being more of a Greenish color and both of these Riders are also Grasshopper themed)
Ps I love your stuff! I just sent that as a small note
4:08 The shiny of Dachsbun looks like someone forgot to use eggwash before baking it. It's what gives the dark yet shiny (pun not intended) colour of the crust.
Since I just came from the Sinnoh starter video with the nice Tortoises are Turtles tangent, I feel obliged to point out that Dolphins are Whales.
I like when they put actual though into it, especially since some of the early ones we're stuck with are just not as interesting, good looking or fitting (in any combination).
Worth noting that the texture of Shiny Rellor's ball changes so it actually looks metallic.
While having an interesting inspiration makes any shiny better than if those colors had been chosen at random, the appearance is what matters more to me. So inspiration can make a bad shiny good, but it can't make a bad shiny better than an actually good looking shiny.
I like both approaches to shiny Pokemon (for an example of each: shiny Charizard, and shiny Hydrapple).
an other to thing to note about the box art legends shines is that they are black and white. just like the Unova box art legends. which could be a reference (or a hint because they in the code before it was announced) to the indigo disk. also there both dragons so it's a cool bonus connection. also great video by the way
Evolution wise, a shiny Pokémon is a mutation that doesn't appear in the wild much because they tend to get captured before they can propagate enough to become a bigger part of the gene pool.
12:59 shiny scream tail's eyes could also be referencing that it is only found in pokemon Scarlet
I saw the title and thought "hey lockstins on the spectrum too! Neat!"
The music was jamming 😂🕺🏾
& Shiny Koraidon looks sooo dope
Shiny farigiraf is one of my favorite shiny's because it was my first shiny in S&V, and the first I hunted for at the start of the game, and I found it as a Girafarig. I was hoping to get some more lore into Farigiraf's shiny colors, and that's why I've been waiting for this video for a year and a half now.
Definitely prefer a thought out design. Also Bay Area native here. The Golden Gate bridge is so named because of it's position at the mouth of the SF Bay where all the ports are, so the gate for the Golden State, and fun fact it's official color is a custom color called International Orange
Once again, I'm reminded that I walked right past a white Oinkologne thinking it was just a variant like with Tauros in these games
I see they spent as much time thinking about future paradox shines as they did on the first part of their names
Another thing about shiny lokix is that it could be looked at as gold or it could be a more greenish color as an homage to kamen rider 01 being the start of a new era while the regular lokix can be seen as the original kuuga or even to the first kamen rider ichigo seeing how their colors are very similar
The future paradox pokemon can be summarized as "everything is chrome in the future"
