I took an 03 F150 from Amarillo to the coast of Oregon last year. Just a 4.6 with 2wheel drive. Went no slower than 60 mph and topped went as fast as 90 mph uphill in the Rockies. All it cost me was a turn signal. She finally got snagged by a mud pit last month. 267k miles and the motor is still golden. Just needs... Lets be honest, a whole new cab and a tranny. The motor still has 120k miles minimum before a rebuild.
Gotta love an old reliable truck.

My dad had an '86 suburban he bought from some kid on a farm. It was dark & light blue, lifted with huge tires, and had fuzzy blue interior. I remember the time we took if off roading at my uncle's property. Eventually he painted it white, then sold it off. This video brought me back to those days, thank you! 👍

My BB ran great in the heat or the cold.
The only problem I had when I had my Suburban was keepin transmissions in it.
I went through 7 of them before I stopped and pulled the motor out and tore it down.
That engine was absolutely clean. It looked brand new inside.
Then I sold the engine and Suburban to a buddy that put the engine in a jet boat that is still goin to this day with no problems.
And that was back in 2008.
I wish I had never sold that engine or Suburban.

For engine bays, I've got the engine warm, covered the electronicals and gave it a good soaking of simple green (degreaser) followed up with some armor all tire foam right over the simple green with pretty good success. Let the foam work a few minutes before spraying off.

I probably mentioned before that my previous truck (pre 2003 RAM TD Crew Cab long bed) was an '88 GMC Suburban all tricked out. Got it in '93 with 98K miles on it and put 362,000+ on the original 350. Sold it for $1200 in 2010 to a guy who promptly rebuilt the engine and is still driving it today. Tough trucks and so much fun with that one.

    I had a 81 Chevy Suburban.
That one reminds me of mine.
    Looked exactly like mine.
    Loved it.
I wish I still had it.
Bad thing is I couldn't keep transmissions in it.
    They kept blowing up.
    I want a 4x4 one now.

From nearly 2 years back.....you can see Derek being more "Derek" here, and not having fully grown into the semi-caricature he's become today, and I mean that in a very positive way.
Just finished the "Elite" video, my favorite yet. Keep up this amazing work, VGG. I saw a big 2 door Thunderbird here in Ky, probably late 70's, and thought, "Here's a job for VGG!!!" Pretty sure it's been sitting long enough (about 20 years?)

Easy diy engine cleaner recipe. In a bucket, mix four cups vinegar, 1/4 cup dish wash liquid, fill remainder of bucket with warm water. Apply with a spray bottle or by hand with a wash rag, or both. Use a toothbrush and hairbrush to scrub and loosen dirt. Cheaper, eco friendly and does a better job than store bought sprays. Also won't hurt paint or clear coat.

Nice Burban. I've been driving burbans for years as my dad has been buying them for years as have I for years as well.
I've wanted a square body for a few years but was waiting for a reasonable one with a rear hatch, roll up windows and a small block and in July I bought a straight bodied 88 with a 350,my hatch and roll up manual windows for a grand.
I now have 4 burbans to drive, the 88,96,03 and 2010 as well as my 69 3 door with a hatch project.

My first vehicle was a 3/4 ton 4WD 1980 Chevy suburban. You know what that meant? Yep, no catalytic converter. I could burn leaded fuel while it was still available. Bought it with a blown 400 CU small block, replaced that with a rebuilt 350. Best fuel economy I ever had with it was about 11 miles to the gallon. Had 7 1/2 foot Meyers power angler snow plow on it. Had to get rid of it because I could never keep up with the maintenance, and it was rusting out.

The 3rd, or 4th, vehicle I bought was a '74 Suburban. It had a 350 in it and the gas mileage was awesome. Could literally watch the gauge drop whenever I took it downtown.

(2WD) Identical to yours - except cheby. 454 did fine in the cold. Turned 'em down, though. I did the math - living in Pennsylvania - that Suburbie woulda kilt a guys wallet driving it 3,200 miles. Don't damn the vehicle for being "cold blooded"; blame the idiot that put the open air filter in place of the factory air cleaner that supplied manifold-warmed air to the carb while warming up! Also, a 454 2wd gives 10 mpg, regardless of whether you go 40 mph or 80 mph and whether it's carrying a bag of helium or a ton of bricks.

Seems to be standard for old trucks. My old fords won’t get more than 13 mpg unless I’m towing it with something else

My mom's 1977 Lincoln Town car 460 V-8 got an average of 10.1 mpg (she kept amazing records) year-round. It only had a 3-speed C6 transmission, though. The car probably weighed about 6000 lbs.

You should try running a big block with a locked distributor. With no vacuum advance it will drop you another 4-5mpg cruising around town. 😁
