  • It's about time I introduce you to my 1989 Chevrolet K2500 Service Truck. Often the unmentioned hero for me, this old girl pulls, tows, and hauls all my junk all over the US and is typically in the background of most projects haulin parts and wrenches. It was finally time I pulled it into the shop and performed some much needed "maintenance" and such on it.

    I had a 95 TBI. I unplugged the tan wire to the computer, advanced the base timing, put a few quarters under the fuel pressure regulator spring, snipped off all that extra material shrouding the TB, raised the injectors up, braised a large salad bowl to the bottom of the air cleaner (to help air flow around the injectors as they restrict quite a bit of air flow), it gave it about 9.32 horsepowers.

    @clintb2027 4 роки тому +17

    I like it, more content of Beets/Beats would be cool.
    An idea I've heard for more power on those TBI engines is to check the flapper on the air intake. The flapper is closed when the engine is cold so that air is pulled from the exhaust manifold and it idles better. Once the engine is warmed up(just like a thermostat) it should open up and let in colder air, but over the years they will fail and then your engine is stuck sucking in warm air from a small tube, essentially choking it out.
    Keep up the great work!

    • @hawkdsl
      @hawkdsl 4 роки тому

      If you watch the vid, you can see the heat tube is not even hooked up.. it's just hanging there. The flapper was a great idea, they just didn't put too much time into the mechanicals. It uses a heat thermostat similar to the coolant kind to open or close the flapper... there is a second flapper in the heat stove pipe that's supposed to close up at the same time, but it's not a snug fit. Hot air will always get sucked up in there. If you don't live in an emissions tight county/state, you can snip both flappers out and plug up the stove pipe in the air filter housing, or cut it flush and weld in a patch.

    • @hawkdsl
      @hawkdsl 4 роки тому +1

      @Mason Widener Yes, this is a great mod. The cone was just a noise reducer anyway. The inner fender ducting is pretty big, and it gets a good supply of real cold air from the front of the truck. Those "Cold air" intakes with the cone filter hanging inside the engine compartment are just you money sucking in hot engine compartment air. All you need is a bigger air cleaner with original fresh air ducting, and you'll get better performance for less cash.

    • @justinkeckhaver8199
      @justinkeckhaver8199 4 роки тому +1

      Regardless of what a guy does, just keep the air coming from the fender inlet. I shake my head at guys who ditch the inlet, or put an Autozone cone filter on, or simply flip the air cleaner lid. Cool air from outside the engine bay is obviously better than warm air inside.
      They do sound beastly with the air cleaner lid flipped, though. Like an old Q-jet lol.

    Their bad attitude was passed on to my two brothers, sister and me. All four of us are scared for life, we realize where the scars came from but there buried pretty deep.

    Just wanted to add to the subject, after changing the belt, throw the old one behind the seat in case you're in the middle of nowhere sometime and the new one goes sideways, the old one will get you home. Same for the windshield wipers, save the old ones behind the seat as well. I've had them fly off in the middle of a torrential downpour and again, the old ones will get you home.

    Another awesome video man, loving some beets, as I have a soft spot for the unsung hero vehicles. Also, as someone who is working with TBI on an 89 Suburban V1500, I know the longing for a bit more juice under the hood. What I've discovered over the years is that these TBI units like to be cleaned, like once every few years. Remove it, take it apart and soak/spray/scrub the hell out of it. The spring behind the regulator diaphragm is notorious for failing as well. Also there is a 1/16 inch spacer that is available for these units, goes between the injector/regulator pod assembly and the throttle base. this allows more air flow through the horns to increase atomization of the fuel spray. Also Edelbrock offers not only a TBI intake, but a companion low to midrange "RV" style grind cam that reportedly turns that TBI into a workhorse. the cleaning and spacer mod alone greatly improved throttle response and acceleration. I added the intake last year and the difference in acceleration was even more noticeable. Waiting on the cam, as the engine still only has sixty thousand on her. Also, check your EGR system. The computers that ran these TBI motors really "felt it" and tried to over compensate if the EGR valve or the module it's hooked to go on the fritz. How many times can I say unit? UNIT UNIT UNIT!!!

    Yup, basic maintenance on the company service truck, if it starts making noise, that's what the radio sound adjustment knob is for. If you see smoke just tell everyone you was getting rubber at 55mph. Now your a hero UNTILL they find out the clearance on piston to cylinder, requires a tape measure....
    Be safe out there great video.

    You can add the bowl (Jegs Part Number: 555-50080) under an open element air filter assembly. Instant difference. I got the filter lid too and that helped. Cat back exhaust will take advantage of the added incoming air. Add a metal matrix, high-flow cat and you'll be in business. And there are more cheap mods if you're interested. On Beets? Yeah. More. Any and all service and maintenance and tuning items.

    A lot of people make belt routings sound much more complicated than they are. I haven't paid attention or looked one up on anything in years. The pulleys tell you what goes where. It's just ribbed on ribbed, and flat on flat. It's pretty easy to figure it out from there.
