I'm glad you pointed out how important it is to always install a new throw out bearing when you pull a transmission. If a bearing siezes, it will eat the pressure plate and everything else in there; it just isn't worth the risk. Don't ask me how I know that!

For lack of power- check for vacuum leaks in the intake! Not just visually, but hook up a smoker and smoke the thing. On mine there were a BUNCH of cracks in the old intake pipe (smearing rubber cement over the whole thing helped), as well as a few leaks around the throttle plate shaft. Patching all that made the old truck a bit happier and bumped up gas mileage a little bit.
It's funny though, can hardly do 70 just hauling one person, but put two tons of stuff in the bed/trailer and it still performs the same! It's like these Rangers want to do work, great little trucks.

I concur. I used to drive one to job sites and in particular the automatic seemed to really enjoy pulling a load. Running empty it never really seemed happy and the shifts were all over the place. Surprising good on dirt roads though. I guess it just wasn't designed as a commuter.

Check the Throttle position sensor for the 4k hang up issue. Just a thought. Also, tightly wrap 1 layer of Duct tape around the knerled threads on the shifter handle and hammer home the shift knob. It wont go anywhere after that. I love the old Ranger. I have a 99 Ranger XLT that my dad bought new, 3.0 liter V6, automatic, power steering, power brakes, a/c, cruise control, am, fm, and cassette player. He only drove it a couple miles a day to and from his work. Around 2012 dad asked if he could park it under a carport at my house as mom wanted the space in their garage for her gardening. After about a year, dad asked if I'd like to have it. I immediately took his offer. Today it's back in the garage at Mom's. It gets driven about once a month. Still looks like new and has 55k miles. I'll never sell it. Maybe someday I'll pass it down to someone in the family.

Three minutes into the video and I already love it. My first truck and daily driver for about 9 years, is a 1994 Ranger XLT extended cab, 4.0L V6 with a 5 Speed Manual and 4x4. I still have it, has loads of problems after rolling over 250k miles, but I swap it out for my new daily every week and drive it still to this day.

Having just resurrected a’95 OBS F-150 4.9L that sat for 4 years, I can confirm that some JYD and PBG stickers do make it run better! 😄
Both tanks and pumps were a rusty mess and got replaced. Had some rough running as well but it’s smoothing out as I drive. Think the EGR was plugged up.
Put some Berryman’s full fuel system cleaner in and that’s helping. Also hit the intake with SeaFoam spray.
Had a ‘96 Ranger 3.0 5-Speed and it was a great little truck. I do love the extra space of a SuperCab!

Ahh...the good ole 3.0L V6. My first car was a 1994 Eddie Bauer Exploder with the 4.0 OHV V6, a 6" Skyjacker suspension lift, and 35x12.50 Super Swampers on 15" chrome bullethole wheels. I bought it with 64,000 miles on the clock. I swapped the 4.0 for a Fox Body 302W and I kept the AOD4 trans (which I regret because it had to be rebuilt five times by a questionable shop), and I also installed an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger kit. It had shorty headers, a full cold air intake (that I fabricated out of intercooler piping), and a full 3" dual exhaust with custom 48" glasspacks and 14" chrome slant cut tips. It was only 2WD, but it was alot of fun in a straight line and it sounded AMAZING! I also had a 1995 2WD Ranger Super (first year for the new body style) with a 4.0 OHV and the new 4R55E electronic transmission that I bought for $500 and that thing would seriously lay an 11 for 150 feet from a dead stop.

My first "project" vehicle was an 89 ranger, ran the hell out of it. It was rough and I treated it that way. Smoke show going down the highway 1 day when the quart a day oil habit went a little heavy. Ripped the motor out tgat summer and plopped in a junkyard 94 mustang motor. I loved that truck. I miss that truck.

Oddly enough, my high school truck was also a 94 ford ranger. 4.0L 5spd 4x4 but xlt extended cab. Never figured out what made it an "xlt" considering it was manual everything with virtually zero options. Even had a bad trans when I bought it but they were easy to source back then.
Great truck, refused to die no matter how much I tried to kill it. At over 300k miles and nearly 10 years of owner ship I discovered the frame was rotten. I patched it and posted it for sale. Miss that truck to this day, 8ish years later.

Man, this is a blast from the past for me, too, lol. My first truck was a 94 mazda b4000, so basically, a ranger. I got it for free from my freshman year teacher it had been sitting in the woods behind her house for 12 years. Her husband got it new and drove it till 2003 when the fuel pump went out and he parked it. Picked it up and put a fuel pump in it and a starter, and she ran like a top man. Miss that truck, in all, put about 700 into a free truck and sold it a year later for 2.5k.

We managed to fit Mom, Dad, Grandma, four kids, and occasionally an extra neighborhood kid or two into that cab-and-a-half to go to Church. If you ever have to do a headliner and want to make it easy, you can get a very small roller to help guide the material against the glue. It is entirely your fault that i jumped into the mechanical deep end with a 1995 f150 that hadnt run in a decade and revived it. I learned a lot on that, and it has been my insanely dependable daily for three years. I have since revived several other cars, Junkyard Digs style.
