Just starting the transition and watching tons of UA-cam videos from beautiful women who've already done it or are doing it. This is what's helping me the most, I can tell you that. I'm excited to embrace the silver/gray. I'm also terrified. Thanks for the support and encouragement.
Good for you! I transitioned years ago and don't regret it. I felt like I was dragging around a ball and chain when I was locked into dying my hair. The gray roots were back in no time and I felt like I was fighting a losing battle. The freedom I feel is great!

I stopped coloring my hair when I turned 50 - trying to keep up a natural look via dyeing was too expensive and time consuming for me. Freeing!! I'm now 68, and I get lots of complements on my "silver fox" hair. Lucky me - not a touch of brassiness. I also use a "purple shampoo", and alternate that with Neutrogena clarifying shampoo. I recently cut down on my shampooing to only twice a week. It finally dawned on me that the oiliness of my younger days is no more! I embrace my natural self as much as I can these days. I still have not given up make-up though - let's not get crazy, now. Lol
Susan Lynch - That's great! I'm currently on the grey hair growing crusade and no longer washing my hair as often. I find it does in fact style better with time and is smoother once the just washed softness has gone away. As you say, I will not be giving up the make-up either, no chance!! 😅💄
Your hair looks so pretty, Robin. My 51 year old daughter got so tired of the hours she spent at the salon not to mention the money she spent and has letting her hair go gray. However, I’m not ready to let mine go. Our hair is kind of a dark blonde so I frost mine and hers looks frosted with the gray coming in. Thanks for all this information. It's a good idea to transition to grey when you still have a lot of your natural color. I am 67, went grey by 24. I have colored my hair for so many years & am forced to stop using hair color due to sudden hair loss after a keto diet. My roots are about 95 % silver-white , 3inches long . No dye for 3 months. My dyed hair is dark brown so the contrast is stark !. Before the hair loss I had very thick, healthy-looking hair. I am very chemically sensitive, have been using Hairprint( a natural hair color) for about 7 years. I became allergic to every other dye I previously used. My 4 yr old grandaughter just asked me if I wanted her to paint my hair ! Im thinking of getting a uniwig or even a wig to use when I go out during this transition !

I also went through the process of growing out my hair and re- coloring. It looked pretty but I wasn’t ready to be gray. This time I cut my hair into a pixie as I don’t have the patience to slowly grow it out again.

I am new in process. made decision finally. i cut a couple inches off as were not healthy and feels great. My sisters inspired my go grey. They are my baby sisters and their hair is great. I had just gone to visit them both. and said .it my turn. and im so happy.

Quite a few inches are grey.
Growing out from hair roots.
But I just ignore them.
First of all, I have prepared tell my myself when should stop or just leave it.

My best friend and I decided to go natural at the same time. My thin, fine pixie hair grayed evenly, and I love it. My friend's hair had uneven patches of gray. To ease the process, her hairdresser recommended doing some highlights to blend in the rest of her hair with the patches of gray. Eventually, she was able to discontinue this process, and her hair looks great now.
I did it three years ago and haven’t looked back since then. That’s not to say I didn’t doubt myself at Times bc I did. But I know in my heart it was the right thing for me to do!! Good luck!!!

Thank you so much, Robin, for updating us. I have found transitioning to gray to be easier than I thought. So much of my fear was based on other peoples' potential reactions. But, every single person has said nothing at all. The worst reaction I got was from a family member who just kept staring, intently. But, he's been bald since age 28, so he didn't say a word.😂😂 Afterwards, I just thought, well, that wasn't so bad. Mostly, this process has challenged me and grown me in so many good ways. It's good to press into our fears around aging and our definition of beauty. ❤❤

On January 2nd I turned 63 and I decided to stop having my hair colored! I had been thinking about it for quite sometime. I’m just tired of having to go back to the Solon every 4 weeks for a retouch and not to mention the expense. I’m nervous about the process and time it takes but I’m also ready to embrace the gray that God has blessed me to have. Your hair looks great and I love Your videos they are so inspiring, encouraging and informative 😊

Yaaaaay Go you...I'm 2mths in and I'm cutting up each month to meet the silver..when my hair is pulled back from my face with a quiff ....I look totally silver (except from short yellow blonde pony tail 🙄)....but that will be gone sooooooooon 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My family has grey hair at every young age, me too.
Haha more than 80% are grey.
So every a few months I will go to hair saloon to get my hair colour.
Not easy to get the right shade of colour too.
I am a Chinese and have dark colour hair.
Hi Choo Lee! My sister has inherited my Dad’s darker hair which does show the gray much more. The transition is more dramatic, but I think the end result will be stunning. I know lots of women prefer to color and there is certainly no judgement here! 😊💙
Hi Robin! I’m so glad I found your channel! I have just started the transition! I am so excited! We have a big family wedding next month and I was going to wait until it was over but then decided to forge ahead! I’m not the bride after all, lol. It’s her day to shine. Not that I could outshine her anyway! She’s 24, I’m 62. I wish I had done this years ago. I have been coloring my hair since I was 21. I started going grey at 14 but there was no need for color until 21. But I have had to dye my hair every 3 weeks for over 30 years AND it looks lousy before 2 weeks are up!! I am so ready. For the first time I didn’t get my roots colored. I had a full foil because I had my hairdresser color over my highlights 3 weeks before because I was sick of the highlights lasting 3 weeks because the root color would cover it. So now I have the full foil and glistening white roots! As a professional it will be rough but as the winter is coming soon I will wear hats. I crochet and knit so I’m going to make a bunch. And I am also going to use the spray you spoke about too. I have always had my hairdresser do it due to allergic reaction to dyes, another great reason to stop. I’m so glad that you found me and that we can encourage each other through this journey! 😊 Hats are a great strategy and the spray works well especially in the beginning when we are the most self conscious about our transition. Collecting pictures on Pinterest and following Grombre and others on Instagram are things that keep me powering through too! I transitioned to gray hair about 10 years ago before it became a trend. My hair is short so the whole process only took about 6 months. It really wasn’t a pre-planned thing with me. I did it because at the time I transitioned, I was a small business owner, and during a particularly busy summer, I had not colored my hair for a couple of months. So out of curiosity, I decided not to color my hair until it had fully grown out.
I had colored my hair for years as my hair began turning gray while I was still in high school. My father had completely silver colored hair by the time he reached his late 20’s, so I reckoned my hair was probably just as silver colored. I was right.
My hair is curly, coarse, and dry, so I only wash it once a week, use a couple of conditioning products, and let it air dry. Apart from the lower expense, increased ease of care, and less exposure to chemicals that going gray includes, there are other, less-expected benefits as well. Gray hair seems to impart increased gravitas and an appearance of honesty that I didn’t expect. Anyone who has gray hair MUST be more wise and honest (LOL)!

I went grey this year and I'm loving it. I had colored my hair pretty close to what I saw at the roots so my transition was very easy. It also helps that my hair is fairly short so the grow out took 8 to 10 months.

I'm going through the same process. I cut my hair into a pixie almost a year ago. Got used to that, and then started my transition to silver in May. I worked with my stylist and got tons of very blond highlights and then got them toned. The toner gets the yellow out. I've toned once a month since May, but I may not need to do that anymore. I'm guessing I will be fully transitioned by December. My method works best on short hair as the blond and toner is a bit drying, but it has made the process relatively pain free. However, if I ever decide to grow out the pixie, that is when the real pain will begin, lol!
I bet you look amazing in your pixie cut Michele! I tried a short cut once - and let’s just say it wasn’t for me! 😂 I know many women transition with a pixie cut and I think that’s a wonderful way to transition quickly. I agree that growing it out is the biggest challenge! 😄💛
Everyone is different and knowing myself as I do, if I had to endure the demarcation line, I would give in. It’s a very individual journey!

At last someone doing this with fine hair like me. I feel les alone. Thankyou
I started to darkening my roots little by little but my grays never get colored. So eventually I'll turn into very dark brown (almost black) but the color I have now is a dark redish/brown. I bet it will take few years. My gray look like highlights all around my head. I noticed recently in a bathroom that have a very unusual light. I almost die when I see so many! But honestly Im getting tired of dyeing it and my scalp hurts sometimes afterwards. I have very thin hair and the breakage is real! I have no money to go to the salon to advance the process so, patience and way less heat.
I did mine too soon and not for the best of reasons. My mom passed away in August 2017 from Alzheimer's and in August 2018 I decided to stop coloring my hair. I was 48. I stuck it out for a year (my hair was totally gray) and I started experiencing a double standard. Without going into long, boring details, I was made to feel older than I really am and recently began coloring my hair again. Emotionally, I wasn't as ready for it as I thought.
The darker one's hair is, the harder it is for one to "bite the bullet".
I agree Maeve! That’s why so many of you are encouraged by my sister’s gray hair transition. The process of growing it out is harder, but the end results can be so beautiful with darker hair. 😊💚
I'm letting my color grow out also. I'm on month 3. I'm glad you suggested getting rid of the dye! I will do that.
Looking back I don’t know how I did it (coloring) the time for it all going grey really give so much
I went grey two years ago. I had my hair cut very short as I also had a scalp issue going on (psoriasis). I still had a few very dark strays on the end so I had lady at my shop strip out my color. I have to use a special shampoo about once a week that I mix in with my regular shampoo choice. I sometimes rinse with vinegar and this helps get out product buildup. My hair is now much longer to my shoulders. Also, I found a great temporary color mousse that I apply about every 2-3 weeks. This takes out the yellow tones. You will be fine and it will look great! Another thing I found out is that my makeup color(s) changed a bit and so did my clothing. I have tried to add more color to my tops/sweaters so that my complexion with my grey hair color looks much better with some color! Good Luck! I believe I will try that Aveeno, too!

Robin, my hair dresser told me to use about a teaspoon of baking soda mixed in with my shampoo to clean hairspray, mouse, etc. out of hair about every six weeks or so. Your hair and your sister’s hair are looking great!

Thank you for ‘being out there’ with letting your hair colour grow. To be honest it looks in very good condition and has a lovely shine to it. My hair was red at birth(Dad was ginger) at 1yr it changed to blonde but as I got older it darkened. Unfortunately I don’t and never have had the darker skin complexion to pull off dark hair, I got tired of people telling me I looked really ill 😄 I dyed it golden red to compliment my thousands of freckles, loved it but the past 8yrs I’ve been blonde and it has suited me better. My daughter is a natural very light blonde with the beautiful large blue eyes. I decided a few weeks ago to stop dyeing my hair for the simple reason after my cancer treatment my hair changed texture and I lost quite a lot of it. Also whilst dying the last time I fell asleep and over processed it causing a lot of breakage, stupid thing to do. My natural hair has gone a little darker and as I’m 70 there’s some grey in it but I really don’t mind because I have a light grey wig and as long as I wear makeup it really suits my complexion. Also what we have to remember grey is the ‘in’ colour now so we are fashionable 😂. Thank you for your tips they’re much appreciated, enjoy your weekend.👍😊💕

Hi great video in my church they say that the Lord set us free and that dying the hair is bondage and i believe that somewhat my hair is gray and black and im not happy but dying my hair every month and times between would be to much work for me, but when i hear you talk i kinda feel better until i look in the mirror that is, which i won't lol! i want to keep this good feeling for a while thanks for the motivation you are a God sent, by the way you look beautiful sister may God keep blessing you in every way amen👍 🙏📖

My hair is my biggest struggle I don't color my hair too often but I like the texture it makes if I would have a lot's of hair I wouldn't color it ether. I've finally let my hair grow longer and two years is a long time. If I get it cut I'll never get it this long again. Long hair is just annoying and hot. Oct 3rd will be one year for me. I don't use any products designed for gray hair. It's looking pretty good, no yellowing. It's salt and pepper. I am okay with it truly. Everyone seems to really like it, including my hubby. How long did it take you to grow your hair out to your shoulders? My hair is growing really slow about 4 or 5 inches.
Hi Gina! I’m so glad to hear that you are happy with your new look! On average it takes about two years for hair to grow to shoulder length. That seems about how long it took when I grew it out before. So I guess I’ve got a ways to go! 😄💛

Hang in there. 2 yrs ago I started my journey to gray. I couldn't be happier. It looks like I have highlights and I realized I loved my natural color so much. Been coloring my hair since early twenties..59 now...wish I had taken this step ages ago.

I have been transitioning for a year and a half. All my dyed hair is gone...Yay! It has been a roller coaster ride, but I am happy that I bit the bullet. My hair is thicker and healthier. People have asked me if I have highlights in my hair. When I tell them that it’s all natural, they can’t believe it. I can tell that it’s getting more lighter around my hairline. and I am excited to see how it progresses. The key for me was to trim my hair more often. I kept it at shoulder length, but had it trimmed every six weeks. I will never look back. I am 57, but kicking 58’s door and I feel a sense of confidence in accepting and embracing the change. Hang in there everyone. You will love the end result! ❤️

I tryed the baking soda to wash my hair every couple of shampoos.so much healthier.have been thing of going gray but I do have dark hair and it looks so bad when you start.not sure i can stand the half gray half dark.
I will have to give the baking soda a try! I know that the first 6-7 months can be tough with dark hair, but after that the color blends a little more - as you can see with my sister's hair. I does take some resolve, and it's not for everyone! 💜

To each their own, but I will never let my gray show. I love my blonde pixie cut and will always have it. It takes me 30 minutes from start to finish to keep it fresh every 6 weeks. Some women look good with it, but on most women its so aging, drab, and just very unattractive. Watch some videos about women who have made the change from drab, aging gray to a fresh new look, and see how it changes lives.
I think that most women feel the way you do and there is definitely no judgement here! 😊 I love that it is becoming more acceptable and common to choose the natural route. As you say - to each their own. 💜
I was “that girl”.... I always said I’d color my hair til the day I die. We change. I think my mind changed almost overnight. I’m 15-16 months in and there’s absolutely no turning back. :)
I did it...one day I saw a dead rat coloring on my head. I went and cut it off... love it so far...

You look lovely and your hair has a beautiful sheen! I admire your courage in undertaking this journey, I wish I was ready. My natural color is very dark brown, almost as dark as your sister's, and I look like a deranged skunk when my roots come in! 😂 I just did my roots, AGAIN, two days ago. I've never been one to enjoy the girlie stuff. I almost never wear makeup and don't paint my nails, so hair coloring is a constant source of irritation. But for some reason I feel like I won't be ready until my youngest child graduates from high school. I had her much later in life than my first two who are eleven and twelve years older. Maybe because I was so much younger when they were in school, I don't want my memories of her school years to include me with grey hair. Funny thing is, if I asked her I know she wouldn't care! At least when I manage to overcome my...temporary insanity, my bff is not only my home care aide but also a hairdresser. She's been doing my hair for almost thirty years and I know she has some tricks of the trade that will help me get through the transition when the time comes.
