  • This video explains how to replace the rear Axle Seal and Wheel Seal ( Grease Seal). On D21 Nissan Hardbody Trucks equipped with single rear wheel, these steps don't apply to the 1 Ton version that has dual rear wheels.
This is a complete step by step guide for the DIY enthusiast, it covers removal of each item, it also explains how to re-pack the Wheel Bearing and how to bleed the Brake System after all the components have been installed.
The hardest part of this job is pressing the Wheel Bearing in and out, there is a need to use a Shop Press for this procedure, however, you can still do all the other steps and take your axle/backing plate assembly to your local Machine Shop and they can Press the Bearing out and install the Wheel Seal for you.
Doing it this way will still save you money plus it will give you the sense of accomplishment by doing most of the work yourself.

I have a 1985 Nissan 720 pickup and I have looked all over for instructions on how to change both the axle seal and the wheel seal to no avail; then I found your video. The entire assembly from the D21 looks identical to mine (I also have a 720 factory service manual that details the process pretty much exactly as you described, except they specify using the "special tool" to remove the nut). I found your video to be excellent, with great camera work. Your instructions were clear and detailed (just the way I need it). Now I've got to either buy a hydraulic press or find somebody with a press who can press the bearings out and in. Liked and subscribed.

Before I start this, do you happen to know what size sockets you were using? I know I do not have that size, and it would be nice to get those ahead of time.

If you used a new bearing, how would you figure out what axle shims you needed to go back with?

This is also the same procedure for the (W)D22 Frontiers and Xterras. One important thing to add is that the axle flange nuts are torque-to-yield so they're supposed to be replaced.

this is way easier than I thought, no c-clips to remove inside the diff, leave to the Japanese to design something sensible.
