    i love how Ramin really makes you feel like the Phantom is Teaching Christine. the way he 'guides' the notes and tones out of her. it's all so visual/physical. but the wild thing is he barely touches her. for all the time they spend together they don't really touch that much. like right at the end he visually cuts her voice off by just by wrapping his hand in front of her neck. it's the same way how earlier he pulls on an invisible rope, sort of, that both pulls her with him and pulls her voice out.

    Together they are a force to be reckoned with. My favourite Phantom and Christine pairing for sure. I adore the 25th anniversary show from the Albert Hall. I had the pleasure of seeing Sierra live in London a couple of weeks ago. It has been a dream of mine for years and she was incredible. Just effortless. Time-lord-jedi Ramin has a HUGE natural talent! I’m sure you do too! but it’s always good to study. If you can start with the piano that’s the best way to learn how to read music. Plus it’s fun to learn to play the piano! There are many apps and inexpensive keyboards out there now so it doesn’t even have to cost a lot. In any case, have fun with your music! That’s wonderful!

    By my limited singing experience, I recognize that tiny space where the high notes have to resonate. But does it work like this to everyone? Because when I hear Sierra singing, and I had the privilege to see it live, it sounds like she has a penthouse in that attic

    • @MarySetrakian
      @MarySetrakian  4 роки тому +39

      Broadway Connection haha! Sierra is fantastic! Yes, I am talking about the physics of singing high notes. So it’s a truth. Because the space is so tiny and it’s sparkling so bright the sound might seem huge! Like a Penthouse! If Sierra tried for a very huge space she wouldn’t be able to hit the note. And even if she did hit it, it would be most likely flat and blat instead of sparkle. Thanks for watching!

It is still hard though. I have learned to read music since then. I don’t take singing lessons but I want to really badly. I also think during the duet part when they sing it together, when Ramin switches to vibrato it really displays the affect that he is in her mind... he is the one making the music as Phantom. His regular phantom voice is that boomy straight tone melody, but when they are singing together, He is singing like Christine would. He writes her music, she inspires him. He is teaching her how he wants to hear her sing, so mimicking that is important. So he sings like her to show that very important musical relationship.

      Phantom has a lot of pre-recorded music and also some of the singing is. For example all of the high notes for both Christine and Carllota are pre recorded to save their voices. Also the phantoms part on notes/ prima Donna is pre recorded too. In the original production both of Christine's and the phantoms first parts of the phantom of the opera were pre recorded too as three understudies would be on the ramps at the back of the stage and the leads would take over on the boat.

    I think one of my favourite things about this is Ramin’s vocal tone and pronunciation. He has this very robust, full, beautiful voice. He walks the balance between classic and modern with his style as well. He can make such beautiful, rounded sounds without actually rounding them or overdoing it. I know every artist is different and I respect that, but I often hear a very rounded, lengthened, and very traditional “ph-AHN-tom” or a very nasally and almost strained sounding “ph-AYN-tom” from other artists who’ve done this song, but sometimes it just feels very forced, at least for the character. I feel Ramin has just perfected his diction and tone so well that his style feels very natural to the character and the song. Or maybe it’s just the way he plays the Phantom, the unique life he brings to it, that makes it feel so natural. The way he performs Phantom feels almost effortless. It feels classic and operatic in a way, but not so much so that it feels forced or anything, while also remaining modern and pop/rock-ish. I don’t know if that makes sense haha, it’s quite hard to explain while writing. But anyways, he just has such a lovely lovely voice. And Sierra, my god... the love I have for her voice, tone, diction, and how she plays Christine in particular is too much to put into words. They are my very favourite Phantom and Christine, if only for the incredible connection they share onstage and the way they make these characters feel so whole. Watching/hearing the two of them perform is always such a treat. I got chills every single time you pressed play on the video. They’re magnificent. Pure magic.

      "I can't sing" is its own song, jingle, and mantra.
      I always was enchanted and taken by a proverb, attributed to African peoples,
      "If you can walk, you can dance; if you can speak, you can sing!"
      The question to ask oneself, I think, is
      "What reward do I get by repeating to myself that I can't do such & such?"
      No possibility of "failing" or being embarrassed or other negative potentiality.
      Yet what is life for, if not to take those unconscious fears and turn them inside out and go for it, not from the impulse of fear, but rather of love? 💗💗💗🏋🏾‍♀️💗💗💗
      Hope you can venture out, with noother ambition except joy, love, peace ... and healing 🌍

Sierra carries this song so beautifully and is by far my favourite match for Christine and this video highlights her skills so wonderfully! Ramin is fantastic as well, but nothing can beat Sierra's climb at the end to that flawless E - I can't wait to one day see the full production.

    • @MarySetrakian
      @MarySetrakian  4 роки тому +16

      Marshall hey Marshall! It’s so cool that you had your first experience with the Phantom movie. That’s the point! To expose you & others to something new, and then to find out you love it is really a thrill! I think those who know the show from the very beginning on Broadway and saw many of the exciting Phantoms and Christines through the years, like to be opinionated because they have so much passion about the show. Mr. Butler had a more pop/rock voice than the typical Phantom. His Christine is super young (usually she’s older) & she doesn’t have perhaps the nuance of other Christines because of age. Meanwhile Madame Giry (who I played for a year on tour) is not written like the stage show, but in my opinion in the movie the script is brilliant & she’s BRILLIANT! I wish they’d give her depth to the theatrical script. So there we are. Lots of opinions! But again, if you love it, I am just so thrilled that they put the movie out there! Stand by your opinion and let’s keep musicals going always with positive feedback!

      Same experience. my first exposure too was the movie. I fell in love with Phantom of the Opera because of that movie. This weekend I was finally able to watch the 25th celebration on youtube, absolutely go check it out (will be available for only a couple more hours if you are not in UK) , you will love it if you love the movie. I had only seen clips of Sierra and Ramin. But wow, that whole performance, it blew me away. And after watching that performance, you absolutely get why others prefer it over the movie.

      Tabitha K Like I said before, the 25th anniversary show is extra special because they added more voices to the chorus and more instruments to the live orchestra, and then the chemistry and performances of Sierra and Ramin are not to be compared. Even Andrew Lloyd Webber said that Sierra is his favorite Christine. I’m so glad you got to experience it! But I have to say, every performance has an extra special something not to be missed. 😍🎶🙏🏽

I was wondering if you had heard of a Dutch program called Beste Zangers - it is a fascinating and very enjoyable format where a group of singers from different musical genres come together for a few days and take turns being sung to by the other artists. Usually they choose to do a cover of the singer "on the couch"(tweaked a bit to add their own touch) or a song which has some particular meaning to that singer. This last season featured, among others, Floor Jansen who is a Dutch singer with the Finnish band Nightwish and Henk Poort who played the part of the Phantom in the Dutch Production. They do a duet which I would love to hear your reaction to. There are some other interesting performances as well (especially Floor's) which it would be interesting to hear your reaction.

    I get so embarrassed when people hear me sing. The only person I ever sang for/ever allowed to hear me sing was my grandpa (R.I.P) on my mom’s side. There was one time, when I was in his living room and he was in his rocking chair in that room, I sang all of Christine’s lines from ALW’s Phantom of the Opera for him. While I did, he had closed his eyes and was smiling and moving his hands in the air like he was conducting. When I was done, I looked at him with a smile and a laugh and asked, "So, what did you think?”. He looked at me and said, “That was amazing and so beautiful. You hit the high notes so well”. Another time I sang all of Christine’s parts was at my grandparent’s house on my dad’s (R.I.P) side. I was downstairs in the play room and they were upstairs in the living room watching tv. I didn’t realize how loud I was singing. I was just so into it, so caught up, and so focused. When I was done, I heard someone clapping which made me turn around. When I saw it was my grandma, I got so embarrassed and my cheeks turned red. She smiled at me and said, “Ok. 1. You’re making grandpa mad. 2. That was so amazing and beautiful. You should be in theatre.” Most of the time, though, I sing Christine’s lines from Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies in my room and when I am home alone. I sing songs from other musicals too. Mainly those two, though. May I tell you my favorite musicals and what songs I LOVE singing from them?

I'm so grateful and honored to have seen them perform together live. I look forward to future videos!

    I'm working on getting My resonance back. I lost it in my early 20s due to chronic infections in my facial cavities and ultimately quit singing. It's taken nearly two decades to figure out what is going on, but now I want to open up my face and vocal chords again. It's hidden in there, somewhere. I feel like if I could just crack my face like a glow stick, all that sickness will release and I can shine again.

    I use my chest voice most of the time as a soprano. It requires less breath and it feels more powerful. When we did this exact song I did Christine's part. And my friend who's a tenor did the phantom.

    I saw Phantom on July 26, 2000 in NYC... does anyone know who the Phantom/Christine were?

    I thought you would also comment on the amazing elongated phrasing, on each note and phrase--singing pure vowels, then carving the vowel with a constant that make every word understandable. So many singers suck. These are true performers using their instruments.

    Both Sierra and Ramin are forces of nature. They have a beautiful friendship; their hearts are in the right place, and they are down to earth folks. I hope they can weather this terrible covid-19 crisis without too much financial loss since all theater and concerts have come to a screeching halt. And Mary, I checked out the reactions of other master voice trainers on UA-cam and your's was, hands down, the best and most complete!

      @@MarySetrakian We'll get through and be better and stronger. We're throwing everything we've got at this little bugger and evolution will favor us over it in the end. Humans are a tough species. We'll have new medicines but it will be theater, music, and the arts that will heal our souls and make us feel truly alive again. I admire your work, you have a sweet soul and really know your craft! And you stay safe too!
