- Voice teacher Sam Johnson's reaction to Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo singing Phantom of the Opera at the 2012 Classic BRIT Awards.
I hope this observation on how they sing helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

I miss Sierra and Ramin together ugh
Jennifer Vaskova An intellectual👏 Yasss me too💕
Jennifer Vaskova sameee tho 😭😍
They’re my favorites for these roles. The 25th anniversary was what sparked my love for theatre
Same they are my fav phantom couple
ME TOO, now i'm sad
she's amazing!
Jennifer Huang Really? Wow! I had no idea!
Isn't it bad to sing when your really sick?
No fucking way!
Thank you for saying that!!
I was gonna post the same about rhe cold
Btw both of them had a cold at that time
Fan of Sierra and Ramin here, where did you get this information? On literally every video of her singing this song someone says “she had a cold here.” She’s never once said anything about being sick in her interviews, she only said it was hard to get into her lower register in this performance right after singing Wishing. Ramin said he got a cold and called out for the day of a show in LND because he didn’t want to get Sierra sick.
I've always interpreted the more classical sounds at the end of this song as a metaphor for the possession: the phantom is controlling Christine, she goes from chorus girl to full blown star.
missheniki This is such a nice interpretation omg
Exactly
Completely agree.
Almost like he puts her into a trance. The song has a hypnotic effect not just on the audience, but also on Christine.
Christine: "I am the mask you wear." Phantom: "It's me they hear."
It's kinda sad people haven't watched this video as much as the other ones. I absolutely LOVE the Pahntom of the Opera. I love the way he sings the phantom. such emotion!
Sanda Denófrio ikr, this is my favourite
Sanda Denófrio It’s funny cos I haven’t watched any of the other videos (I’m not into mainstream) only this one 😂
Agree!!! Ramin as Phantom is the dreaaaaammm
Ever since watching the 25th Anniversary video, Karimloo has been my favorite Phantom. Incredible voice.
So true, that video is epic. I actually bought a copy from my dad, who's also a big fan of the Phantom of the Opera.
The way you smile every time Ramin Karimloo screamed SING, that's exactly me when I'm fangirling over Ramin's version of The Phantom.
I could literally listen to Ramin for days and not get bored for a single second
Saaame, also what a cute reaction 😍
I always fangirl over his version and anything else Ramin sings 😂
It's kuz u have bad taste. 😂
Ramin is the best phantom.
1:58
Ramin: *sings*
Sam: Jeez...
Me too, Sam, me too.
1:50 is the correct
Ramin: SING!
Sierra's mind: idiot what does it look lijke im doin??
I think it's really interesting that at that point there's a switch to a more classical sound-what Sam didn't say, and what occurred to me, is that //narratively// it makes sense at this point, while the Phantom encourages her to sing, that there's a really classic approach being used.
I agree! The whole show is high camp- I just can't take it seriously.
😂
Don Emmons. Screaming . . . Not the kind of screaming that sounds good . . . But the classical soprano kind.
@@darb6808 You think she sounds screamy? Really?
I like how Karimloo sings the line "grows stronger yet" a little bit different from the other phantoms.
He didn't.😂
"There's so much pain in his voice."
Welp, there you go, that's the phantom's character right there.
Ping
He said there's so much "ping". That's talking about the brightness in his voice.
Welp, there you go. That's Ramin Karimloo for you right there.
@@Rosannasfriend I’m playing Christine in phantom of the opera concert at my Thursday 17 of March and April 2022
@@meganomahoney5450 HAVE YOU DONE IT YET??? I'm excited to hear the details!!
He should watch Sierra sing with the four phantoms of the 25th anniversary. It be interesting taking apart the four singers techniques.
Except that was Sarah Brightman
Kevin Wilson there’s a version with Sierra as well
Yes but some of the guys are pretty old and they are not at their best anymore.
@@kevinwilson3609 ua-cam.com/video/_8cXwAs0SZE/v-deo.html
I'm a simple woman. I see Rierra, I click
same
HONESTLY
Girl same!
Hahaha same
same!!
To say Sierra was ill when she performed this, she smashed it
I know right she was splendid even if she was sick i sound good but when im sick i sound like a dying goat lol
I love that she sounds more pretentious when saying “phantom” than him, it’s like a reflection on her character’s social status versus his. And his softer voice after his initial verse, it’s like he’s letting himself get intimate with her for a second. I love hearing you explain the techniques that makes me have an emotional connection with the singing!
her vocal coach said she only did that to make it sound opera
This is a great performance but i think you need to look for 25th anniversary version.. they sang it more powerfully.
YES!!!
Yes, the 25th is the best!!
Do you have de link please?
I need to watch it too but I can't find it
No, I bought the dvd of it. Idk if there’s a link online but it is well worth it. If you enjoy the phantom this is a great addition to a dvd collection.
It gave me physical pain when he paused the video before Sierra’s final note. 😅
Please react to more classical stuff! It seems like you prefer reacting to pop, but I would LOVE to see your takes on more classical music or even just musical theater!
Yes please!!
Lea Zoeph you mean like this?
I love the way he sings "stronger yet." It's different than what is traditionally sung.
Okay love this video! Fun facts about the singers even though everyone’s already doing it😂(but they’re my favorite): Sierra has videos with her voice teacher (Mary Setrakian) where they talk about how she was trained to sing very forward on the “mm” sound. She also uses belly breathing and pulls her stomach in to support the sound. I’ve also noticed that it seems she was trained to use those traditional classical vowels where it’s basically a modification and different from the actual word. (She always goes for “ah” when she can) Ramin on the other hand was originally untrained which I saw someone already say but he has stated that he doesn’t like open-mouth singing and will never sing that way. The dude will sing b-flats and barely opens his mouth. It’s crazy. He also seems to sing with pure vowels but they naturally flip or cover as opposed to completely changing them like Sierra. His E’s shade into the “ih” sound but I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose. Here’s a great video of him singing “Till I Hear You Sing” and you can hear his vowels and see that he doesn’t open his mouth much at all on those big notes ua-cam.com/video/mBKVYx4XnSQ/v-deo.html I also had a question about the ending, you said Sierra was letting her voice thin out a lot at the top, but how does she manage to also make it sound full and operatic and not choked off while also being light with it? If I try to be light my voice sounds wayyy too thin, but if I try to get that fuller classical sound I push much too hard. My E6 comes out more light and pure, but those high C’s are in some weird spot where I can’t seem to balance it out.
I guess light isn't the right word. Thin is much better. It's the same connection that you have on lower notes, but a thinner cord because higher notes automatically creates more pressure. At that point it's like the cords are just mouse squeaking, then it's all about acoustics to turn it into a useable sound. The only acoustic strategy that works that high is super high F1 (wide open mouth).
Sam Johnson Thank you so much for your reply!! I guess acoustics is my problem then! I’m a little confused though because I see all the old opera singers saying to barely open your mouth and there’s videos of them singing high notes barely opening at all but still getting a full sound. How is that possible??
Women above about an A will have to open their mouth wider to get a clear and easy sound. Up until then I do think people open their mouths way too wide and tall.
Sam Johnson Wow I totally agree! I’ve only found disadvantages to open-mouthed singing but funnily enough A5 is exactly when my jaw starts to naturally drop! Thanks so much again for sharing that information! Super helpful.
He looks like he's in love with Ramin when he first starts singing and dude me too
I also have to add that it's super hard keeping your eyes on Sierra and Ramin cause this dude has one of the most magical faces I've ever seen and such intense eyes
I absolutely love Ramin and Sierra’s voices. I remember the first time I saw the phantom of the opera was when I was sixteen and I saw the 25th anniversary performance on Netflix...My mouth literally fell open! I had never heard such beautiful music before in my life lol. Even now it gives me goosebumps all the way up my neck and face to hear them sing together. I love it! ❤️
Sierra coming on: is softy and dreamy
Ramin coming on: SING ONCE AGAIN FOR ME
Ramin is amazing. I love listening to his version of "Till I hear you sing".
I don't know much about opera, but one thing I'm sure is: *this vocal trainer LOVES ramin.* He smiles every time ramin opens his mouth.
This isn’t an opera. :) It’s a classical musical sung in the style of operetta.
I would like to know what you have to say about Nicole Schenzinger doing that.
Me too!
Ah yess!!!
Me too!
And Scherzinger’s rendition of Evita - Don’t cry for me Argentina would be interresting to see him reacting to
Was thinking this too.
Ramin: sings for 2 seconds
Everyone: *mindblown*
sam looks kinda like raoul from the movie. lol is it just me who sees it?
Now I can't unsee it!
I can't stand Raoul in the film. I find him a wus. 😝 I could never fall in love with that Rauol!👎🏻
@TheLynneee I know right!!! I always wanted Christine to end up with the Phantom));
Omg yes
Raoul in the book was annoying, too. I can't stand the character. I prefer the Phantom.
Ramin Karimloo is my favorite phantom. Gerard Butler was a sexy phantom, but he couldn't sing and lacked emotion.
I disagree, gerard was good at singing anger and lust. Ramin was good over all
@@mil2292 Gerard is not a singer, but he did an amazing job acting the song, that's what makes it so dark and emotional and awesome, but vocally talking he's not properly a good singer.
Girrrl I am so with you!!!
Only those 2 phantoms? Check out the dutch phantom: henk poort .
@@franciscowarneros6920 Agreed, I think he played the character very well. Vocally he couldn't keep up, which should be expected. I don't feel he did poorly though.
I've been watching/listening to Phantom since it was first on stage in the West End. Ramin is, without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite Phantom. So grateful I got to see him perform this role and talk with him afterwards about it. This was really good, hearing about how their different techniques play into the roles too - of Christine being "classical" and the Phantom being more "maverick", the difference in the personalities... And the way that Christine changes from the first half of the song which is about the interplay between them to the end, where he is coaching her up to the high F, which is even more "classical".... Beautiful. This song gives me goosebumps every time.
Would love to hear your commentary on some of Freddie Mercury’s vocals
they are the most amazing pair to ever perform this musical. Their chemistry and vocals are absolutely STUNNING. I can watch them for hours and hours. They’re so inspiring.
The only Phantom and Christine duo I accept ah! 😍😍
Amen to that!!!
Richard Williams
Not in my opinion. This performance doesn’t live up to the whole thing that is the 25th Anniversary that Sierra and Ramon performed in.
Have you heard Rebecca Caine's Christine? She is incredible
Yawn! 😴
@@baynye Okay... What other duos have you listened to?
Because although these two share an incredible chemistry, which makes for a great show, there are equally and even better performances.
Your little smile when the phantom said “sing” the first time actually melted my heart 😍 I love the way they perform this together, they are by far my favourite phantom and Christine
its 2am and im watching ur video, better get a heart from you mate.
literally the same for me (2:16 am oops)
Please react to Sierra Boggess Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again
I just got into Phantom and I just got into you what a crossover
I totally agree with you on the shift in classical singing. I definitely find this more dimensional and sophisticated than the more traditional back resonant singing. It's great that you mentioned that, because I liked Ramin the most of all the phantoms, esp the phantoms who sing with that baritenor slash dark color to their voice. Ramin's interpretation is very intense because of the clarity of his resonance from tightening the vocal cords.
Sierra Boggess is my favorite Christine Daae!
Also could you react to IU's live performances? I'm interested to see what you have to say about her singing technique.
The Kpop star?
Your reaction at 7:15! Hahah! Priceless.
So I watched the 25th anniversary free showing on UA-cam (was available for 48 hours) and now the algorithm is giving me all the Phantom of the Opera-related videos I watched years ago. Haha!
I have never heard an evaluation of the opera / musical singers. It's really interesting. Mainly a description of that singing.
Here is his next song from the musical. For me this song is unique. He was able to create different emotions within one song here. I feel sorrow here, then anger and finally sadness and despair. It's just audio, but it's enough for an idea. Not every singer can express emotions like this in his own voice. ua-cam.com/video/WQZHReCOw4s/v-deo.html
Sam! I have to say, after watching hundreds "vocal coach reacts" videos, I honestly believe you're the best there is. No gimmicks. Proper evaluation and critique of the processes and techniques used. You're fantastic. Thank you! 👌🏼
React to Lea Salonga singing on my own or I still believe
This video sent me into a Phantom of the Opera spiral that 24hrs later I'm just recuperating from.
I subscribed after watching you analyze a kpop compilation but PLEASE don't stop doing videos about non-kpop things. The powerhouse that is the kpop fandom pulls a lot of UA-camrs away from other topics. I, of course, will love to watch more kpop analysis as well, but don't lose your variety!! You're my favorite UA-cam discovery of 2018! :D
I agree!
I love theatre with every fiber of my being and it would be cool seeing you analyze more theatre stuff!
Sierra was sick for this performance i believe
“You know what you’re talking about,” is an understatement! So knowledgeable!
I loved the reaction when Ramin started singing, love him
I actually wasn't quite sure what that meant. I mean, I know (generally) what "ping" is, and personally I like the sound; but I ain't no trained singer. Was that a good or bad reaction?
I love Sierra and Ramin on The Phantom of the Opera😍😍😍😍😍
Ramin and sierra are the best duo
I love Ramins voice! Its so powerful! Him and Sierra sing so well together. Great breakdown, Sam!
Would love to see you react to and dissect Ramin Karimloo’s performance of “Till I Hear You Sing” from the Olivier Awards.
Actually she was sick that day she had a head cold she sing live most of the part at the end it pre recorded cuz I know listen to the end it just goes in to it
That's probably why she was behind the tempo in the beginning. I was like "Wait a minute! It sounds weird." at the beginning. Then it started to sound more on tempo gradually.
Nice to know! :)
Thank you so much for analysing this. Sierra and Ramin are my favourite POTO pair because of their chemistry and I just adore Sierra as Christine.
I bloody love Sierra and Ramin, individually and together. Great reaction video, as always.
I am a massive fan of Ramin I first discovered him last year when Anastasia opened on Broadway (he played Gleb new ‘bad’ guy) and I’m new in the broadway world so I haven’t gotten into phantom of the opera at the time. Few months back I learnt he was in phantom and found out my mum has the dvd of these 2 doing the show in the royal Albert hall and I loved them I also know Sierra from when she did little mermaid on broadway I was shocked when I found out they could sing like this 😂😂😂🎭
You should also check out the 25th anniversary of Les Misérables where you can find what I guess would now be classed as a younger Ramin playing Enjolras
Personally I love Sierra's version. It fits the story of the musical: a girl with a pretty voice who was later taught by a master to sing classically. It's beautifully done. The character is "talking" to her her teacher, who, after almost sending her into a trance, demands that she SING! for him, and so she slips easily and almost suddenly into the classical voice he taught her. I love that Sierra balances that "normal" voice with the classic soprano voice throughout her performance as Christine.
React to The Phantom of the Opera - Nightwish, it's amazing
This needs to be done!!
OMG, yassss!
Thank you!!! It's a must!!!!
Please!
It would be interesting to do a comparative piece. And I think the Nightwish version is superb.
I really like your reaction and the way you are analaysing things so i can still understand it 😃
Please react to Mitch Grassi's high notes/vocal range (the second one has his whistle notes, cause idk why, but people did not included those into high notes)! 😁 i love his voice
Ramin is incredible. My one and only phantom 🎉
Alright, even if Sierra wasn't sick, take note she performed *Wishing* prior to this sequence; it's kinda hard to shift from that high to that low, she merely had a couple seconds of interval before TPOTO so.
i get chills whenever i hear them sing together! beautiful and talented.
You need to watch Colm Wikinson and Ramin sing bring him home together and each of their versions of the music of the night.
There are no other voices like Ramin or Sierra's ♡ They're so talented!
I see that Ramin emulated Anthony Warlow when going up on "stongER yet"
Briar Bear I love that I’m not the only one who heard that 😁
Sierra is a goddess! Her enunciation is always so rich and intentional, I think it also really shows the difference between just a good performer and a freaking professional. So thankful this performance is available for the masses
I love musical reviews. His voice alone just stuns me every time he starts singing. This is one of my favorite performances from Phantom of the Opera. I would love to see your opinion on this girl Carly Gendell sing a cover of “No Way” from Six the Musical. I’ve recently been obsessed with that musical.
I've seen both of these singers live on Broadway: Sierra as Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Ramin as Gleb in Anastasia. They're such incredible singers!!!! I loved that they did this together.
How about Nightwish' metal version of Phantom of the opera? The female one sustained awesome Eb6
Can't believe I haven't watched your reaction to this yet I love these two
Him: fails to pause
Me: everytime i trynna pause someting
Ramin is my all time favourite Phantom. Goosebumps throughout the whole performance. Sam thanks so much, this made my night!
This duo and Kaley Ann Voorhees/Ben Crawford are my favorites. Both pairs are simply breathtaking.
Your knowledge is impressive. I don't understand half of what you're talking about but it's a pleasure to listen to someone who obviously knows what he's talking about. Very well done.
Can you react to Ramin Karimloo “Till I hear you sing”
I did vocal lessons for about a year and a half and I hadn’t understood how things work as much as I do now just by watching a few of your videos in one day. You have a very good way of explaining things, so thank you for that!!
RAMIN IS THE BEST AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I *always* get goose bumps from sierra's singing, she is so brilliant! love your videos sam thank you
What a wonderful piece of music this is. I think my favourite version is the Nightwish live version from End of an Era.
I loved how this guy bit his lips when Karimloo appeared. Same feels
You liked the part when Ramin says "SING" for the first time cuz u smiled straight away 😂😂😂
Absolutely love your videos - only recently discovered them, but your knowledge and commentary is so fascinating and clearly well informed. Your whole attitude to singing is wonderful, you're so accepting of all kinds of styles and never drag people down. Wonderful work :)
Hi Sam, you need to see/review Nicole Scherzingers’ performance of this when she performed at the Royal Variety Show uk.
Astonishing.
One of my all-time favourite shows....thank you for posting!! The music in this show always gives me the chills
The Phantom of the Opera is definitely my favorite song I even danced to it in my fifteen y.o. party (I'm Mexican so yes, I danced to the phantom of the Opera during my quinces lol it wasn't the opera version but a kinda rock version sang by Lacrimosa) I loved that you reacted to this song, I've seen sooooo many different interpretations of this and honestly this is one of my least favorites but I still like it. There's a performance of a kid singing to bits of this song during a "the Voice" (don't remember which county tho) that sounded really good for me, I'm saying in case you wanna watch it yourself. Thank you for this and every single video you've uploaded, they're very educational :)
Nirala Lee that’s so cool it never occurred to me to do that (tambien soy de México)
I fkn *love* Phantom of the opera, grew up watching it over and over. I'm so glad you reviewed this, the performance was epic as hell
I see some other peeps asking about a Nightwish Phantom of the Opera review from their End of an Era recording! I agree 100%! Let's check it out👉👉
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY I LOVE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
nightwish-the phantom of the opera is a nice cover too
the last part of christine in this song, is pre-recorded, is the same vocals used in the 25th anniversay, but in this version they are singing live, except for Christine's high notes. loved the video, thanks for charing!
Apparently Ramin was never classically trained? In a video he did with Seth Rudetsky in 2014 he said he didn't know how to read sheet music which is WILD to me. Props to him for being able to have a career and not murder his vocal chords without classical training.
I can not thank you enough for reaction to this. I find both of them amazing and the phantom of the opera is my favorite musical of all time. Keep up the good work
She's also sick in this performance ahh She's a talented one 😍
Ramin and Sierra are a perfect duo, simply amazing... and in my all time favourite musical. They are both by far my favourite vocalists!!!!!
damn... now you have to react to "phantom of the opera" by Nightwish, live, The End Of An Era dvd
I second this
It would be an interesting analysis. Tarja kills it but Marco with that heavy metal voice, I don't know. He still sings it better than Gerard Butler though.
I’m so glad you analyzed this performance. It’s one of my favorite musicals. Very informative and certain points you made will help me with my singing. Thank you!
Sorry to spoil the party, but the ending of this song is always lip-synced on Broadway/The West End and I think this performance is the same. That being said, I’m sure Sierra could do this live cause she’s incredible.
Actually Sierra is one of the few who didn’t lipsync it, Sarah Brightman didn’t either. She might have for this performance but she didn’t for her full fledged shows
Grace Elyse Murray I don’t think so. In the 25th anniversary she lipsynced
Thanatos yes but it’s a question of whether they can stay on that C6 for so long and then still hit and sustain the F6 at the end. The vocal stamina required for that is unbelievable.
Tâm Lê yeah but that wasn’t a regular performance. She didn’t lipsync for regular performances. It wasn’t even at the regular theatre
Obviously she can hit it perfectly. But if she does it like 8 times a week (or 6 times), it's not healthy
I am a huge Ramin Karimloo fan and I love the way you break down his singing technically! This video is awesome, thank you for making it!
Would love to see you react to Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera. :)
Omg you’re the first brilliant voice teacher I’ve found on UA-cam. You listen to every second and feel it and hear it with your heart. You’re completely solid. I’d love for you to coach me.
As amazing as Ramin is, Sierra absolutely steals the show based on the sole fact that she was sick as hell during this performance and could still keep up with a singer like Ramin, and in fact surpass him. Easily my favourite performance of this song.
