I live in the UK and this a HUGE news story right now! The amount of red flags ignored because she doesn't "look" like a killer, and doctors were even forced to apologise for raising suspicions about her!
Remember the employee fired for warning about the Titan submarine? Anytime people are demonised for raising legitimate concerns, a tragedy is waiting.
As if there was any "look" that means someone can't be a killer. I hate that chivalrous simp nonsense.
What does a killer look like? Many killers don't look like killers. It's absolutely unconscionable!

Hospitals and age care homes are perfect environments for serial killers to hide in plain sight. Sadly it's not that uncommon.

@@bloomingaccents No happily, it's very uncommon. I think though that because it's SO abhorrent to nearly everyone, it gets a great deal of attention, so it feels that it happens more often than it does
Her parents are partly responsible. They threatened the 2 paediatricians who continued to complain about Lucy; Mr and Mrs Letby said they would report the doctors to the General Medical Council. Her parents were suffocating and controlling; they didn’t want her leaving home and living on her own. She was spoilt from the day she was born and her her mum and dad believe she’s innocent. Even now she’s still having tantrums, refusing to leave her cell to be sentenced and listen to the victim impact statements from the bereaved parents. She’s a monster!

Lucy being drawn to the grieving parents like a parasite sucking up negative energy is like modern day demonic possession. She feeds off (or some entity) greif, guilt, dispare, trauma ect.
Absolutely and good discernment as I was puzzled as to why she circled back to see her damage.

she literally spells out her true motives in her ramblings in that note. She was jealous of these people because she was alone and didn’t think she would ever have a family and be happy like them. It was literally spite and hatred that drove her to do it because she saw their lives as better than hers and she wanted to rob them of their joy. Her being around them after was more likely her revelling in their sadness and stalking their socials would be for the same reason. She was contented by the misery that she caused as if it made her feel better about her own situation.
A five year old could have come to the correct conclusion quicker than this hospital. It was plainly obvious that she was murdering infants.

Agreed. In my view there can be no excuse whatsoever for the refusal of the management to even consider taking any action much sooner. Does this point to fear for their own and the hospital's reputation if there was found to be a threat to lives in their hospital? Unlike at the time of the other two extreme murderous medical cases here in the UK, times are different nowadays. Due to technology, the public are more aware of certain personality disorders and how crimes are not necessarily committed by obvious 'monsters'. The awful irony is not lost on us that this organisation is in the business of caring... Plus the fact that answers can soon be dealt with by forensic science. I can't bear to think of the devastation... it's too upsetting even just hearing about it all...

As Dr Grandw says, the reason they were made to apologize was because she was armed with lawyers threatening lawsuits. Obviously the evidence was not as cut and dried as the "OMG, she was White, so that's why she got away with this narrative would suggest". People noticed a pattern that she was involved with cases where babies died. The methods she used were not that easy to detect.

She was right about not getting married or having children or a family, and the world is better off without her.

As an L&D nurse, this is terrifying. There is nothing worse then the cry of a mother who has lost a baby and being helpless to comfort her in any way. Fathers too, though they generally are more stoic and my guess is fall apart later. I can not imagine a person having a desire to cause that pain, I guess “evil” is not a psychological term but I would argue that she did show insight when she called herself evil.
100% agree. The sound of a mother crying over her lost child is the most agonizing heartbreaking sounds I’ve ever heard.

The management of the hospital need to be charged. They had it in their power to stop more murders.

The two senior managers who were responsible for the decisions made at the time have since left their positions - they left at around the time of Letby's arrest. So the current management is different. But there is going to be an inquiry into this case, so those original managers could potentially be facing legal consequences further down the line.

I've worked in the NICU and let me tell you, it doesn't take much to cause harm to those angels because they are so incredibly fragile. RIP little ones.

Sadly, you're right, however, even more so I'll never be able to understand how anyone could do this. Mine's birth weight was a little low. Nothing of concern, but he was so small. I'll always remember the tiny features, the warm skin, the soft baby hair, how adorable he was. I honestly think not only would I never be able to harm a baby (or anybody that is) mentally, I also couldn't do it physically. My entire body would try to resist such an act. It's just unfathomable. You had a wonderful job caring for little angels, thank you for doing it.

@Alexandra-dy2ns L o l I thought about the smell immediately. D***, it's been so long. I forgot the name of that white protective baby stuff..add-vernix I worked in post partem with the mothers. Nobody treats mothers as well as they should be treated!! These poor Mother's are so torn up after.! But I would often go work in the well baby side. When they were shorthanded Usually because the well baby nurses had to run into NICU I would rock and burp the babies. But I told them I do not want to stick babies. I did it a couple of times I hated it so cruel I hated it. It's like welcome to the world pain pain 😆 O m g I would assist with circumcision that was so tramatic. Watching that poor little boy chin quiver and him cry it was terrible. Postpartum is usually a very happy place. Except you'll see a lot of family dysfunction like you do everywhere. But then when a baby is not born healthy, it can be very sad..
God have mercy on those poor little souls!
She’s now been sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole. She will die in prison. She hasn’t admitted any of the crimes or shown any remorse. A truly awful case.

I live in the UK and this is a massive story here. Lucy is terrifying when you think about it, other people could be like lucy and we wouldn't even know it. You glossed over one big thing there was a massive cover up.
And the proof or verification of this "cover up" is where exactly? Who is covering anything up? Certainly not the hospital management. They backed Letby to the hilt.....
Lucy could be innocent. There was no direct evidence at all. The closest thing to any evidence was her diary notes and that means nothing. She might just be weird, depressed, unhinged but maybe not a killa

Surely hospitals and particularly neonatal wards should have CCTV cameras! That would prevent deranged evil murderers like this one.

My wife words in a NICU and they do have cameras they can use. Mostly so the mothers can check on the babies. But it’s actually illegal to have them on at all times. My wife actually forgets to turn them off and so on her shifts they are often on for the entirety. This has actually worked out wonderfully for her because she is a very caring nurse and the parents will often see her holding the baby for hours, changing linens (when it’s not her job) and reading to the babies even when unconscious. She’s broken the record in that hospital for parents submitting her name for awards. Sorry… I’m just a proud husband and she never brags or brings this up in conversation so I find any reason to. Anyway yeah, apparently there is a reason they don’t have cameras on all the time.

I really hope they study her in greater depth. What her childhood was like, her parents, friends. Other than knowing she's guilty,we don't know much more. Female killers are rare enough, let alone serial killers so I am very curious to know WHAT went wrong with her and if her tendencies ever manifested themselves to other people. Animal cruelty, etc.
What we need most is Her explanation of why?!.. that I think she will never tell. It’s her strongest assist, I think she will take it to her death.

@@charlenedell6788I think the reason she did it was for the power trip that she got out of it. She could marvel at the power she had, to end a life, and then she likely found it quite interesting to watch the effects that the death had on others. She likely had a sick sense of superiority in knowing that she did it unbeknownst to everyone else and that she was the one solely in control of these people’s lives. She was likely quite fascinated by the grief behaviours she saw displayed in the grieving victims, an ability foreign to her; emotions that her brain never manifested as she was incapable of feeling empathy, guilt, remorse, love, etc., but it was probably interesting for her to watch it in others who did have these social emotions.
As a psychopath, she is not a social being, like the majority of us are. Having emotions like love, joy, endearment, empathy are something she just doesn’t experience and when those behaviours were seen in the sick baby’s parents, she was both fascinated, puzzled and maybe even frustrated or angry too, because she knew that she was devoid of those emotions.
Being a Psychopath must be one of the worst things that can ever happen to a human being!
A lot of women lack empathy with other women’s babies. She also may have lost her own. Many women hide it very well

I’m fascinated by this case, it’s like she’s getting off on the pain and anguish generated by the death of each child. She’s like a vampire feeding on intense emotion. I guess it’s the same equivalency of a sadistic killer who is literally getting off on the torture of another human being and relishing the intense pain and fear they are generating. What a monster, it’s so incredible that there are these creatures walking around in a human skin literally preying on emotion.
Trust me, once she acts out towards a fellow prisoner who isn't having it (aka biatch slappin her) she'll suddenly not smile like a dmb biatch anymore and experience fear herself

Look at the facts, the doctor’s last name and a history of prejudice. Had this doctor had a name like Smith or Gaylord perhaps they would have scrutinized differently.
It would be interesting to know the ethnic background of these victims. This sick person deserves a similar treatment to what she strives to provide these premature babies. This includes insulin overdose, blow her with air until her brain explodes and unequivocal sadism. May jail be her home in the meantime.

@@JitzyJT Even before this case, I didn't trust the NHS. I am too old to have children now, however when I was younger, one of my big concerns was that if I ever got pregnant I absolutely wanted to be followed in France (by doctors of my own choosing - I know way too many bad French doctors) and to give birth there... especially as twins run in my family (on both sides but especially on my father's side) and if I had given birth to twins, it is almost a given that one of both twins would have had to spend some time in a neonatal care, and potentiallly an intensive care unit.
I am going to have even less trust towards the NHS from now on, especially considering the way the whistleblowers were treated (they could have lost their job!). And just imagine if Lucy had had enough insight to stop killing babies early on, and had gotten herself a job at a different hospital, or had moved to New Zealand, which apparently she had contemplated at one point. Moving hospitals regularly was what enabled Charles Cullen to carry on killing patients for so long: the hospitals had to give him a neutral reference as otherwise he could have taken them to court. For comparison, I cannot get a reference from my former employer because I refused to sign a NDA (I was victim of bullying and sexual harassment, was eventually dx with cancer, and forced to resign - I spent 12 to 15 hours pw , up to 4 hours and a half a day, in disciplinary meetings, and it was just playing havoc with my health, especially as I then had to stay in the office until 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, to finish my work...)
She is a sadist. Killing defenceless babies in the most painful way. She enjoyed the power over life and death. She is still exerting her power by refusing to attend the sentencing and impact statements. Causing even more pain to the victim’s families. Pure evil
She should be made by the judge to listen to the victim impact statements.
And what do victim impact statements achieve, according to all of you? Do you think for one second that this will make the killer regret their actions? And even if it did, which is very unlikely, does their regret do anything for a grieving parent or family member? No. If I was a victim's family member, I would not give the murderer the time of my day by sharing my grief and my pain with them.

What is strange is that her writings suggest that she was very conflicted, confused, and feeling very guilty about what she was doing. Most serial killers tend to be psychopaths and sociopaths that completely lack any sense of right or wrong, affective empathy, conscience and internal sense of ethics. They don't really feel all that conflicted or confused by their urges and their actions. If any conflicted feelings are experienced, it is more about the fear of being found out, and even that tends to be damped down because they don't experience fear as intensely as us normies.
Other than her actions, she doesn't present as a psychopath or sociopath. Something(s) else is going on here.

Lucy’s notes and Personal Diary do NOT constitute Proof of any wrongdoing by her in any shape or form….and Certainly not a “near Confession as was stated”. Merely a common shift pattern - the “L mistaken for “LD” in the “secret code” fiasco, and the disjointed writings in Lucy’s Post - it (coloured) notes ……beating herself up because Lucy was by then being “fingered” by the “Authorities” for having caused @Baby harm”…… and by no means PROOF - as was virtually implied - of wrongdoing and a ‘confession’ by Lucy. Christopher Lloyd.
Here in the UK there are also reports about texts sent to her colleagues, or their direct observations of Lucy during and after resuscitation attempts on babies that she had just attacked, where she seemed excited by the incident, which may give another source of gratification and motive. She was also said to be having a relationship with a married doctor there and exchanged texts with him, seeking reassurance that she did well in those emergency situations, and putting them both into the same 'boat', dealing with the stress and grief together, which is another apparent motive. I don't believe she particularly got anything from the pain, specifically, that she inflicted on the babies - they were just a means to an end - but she didn't care about the pain either.

The hospital management who were consistently warned about this nurse, by consultant paediatricians,and who consistently defended her should be sacked and investigated by the police for neglegence.

There was a nurse in Texas in the early 80s named Genene Jones who poisoned countless infants because she resented doctors & nurses who had higher medical degrees than her.
I think she did it as a sort of passive aggressive psychological pain/discomfort release.
Why didn't she just join planned parenthood? They do it on a massive scale and it's completely legal!

I can’t imagine the vindication in knowing you were right to raise concerns over her track record but the simultaneous pain in feeling like if I maybe pushed harder I could’ve saved even one more baby and prevented the grieving of a family.
I personally believe there are big clues in the letter that was found at her home. 'Why me?' I think she was angry and bitter that other people married and had children and she hadn't and didn't believe she ever would. She felt less than, 'not good enough' for the things other people had and that built up as huge resentment inside her. I think she had that serial killer mentality..taking the power back when she felt helpless, unloved, unattractive, not worthy in her eyes of a relationship and a family, so she sought revenge on those who were allowed that when she wasn't. She wanted to destroy their children and their happiness, and although she knew it was wrong and evil, she did it anyway because she realised there was something she had that they didn't...power and control. They might have achieved what she couldn't, but she had the ability to take it away. She would also have received attention being the nurse that was present when these poor babies died...so by making it happen, she got to be part of that drama, not just a bystander. One of the detectives described her as 'beige'. I think that's very astute...she is beige and I think she knew that. It's what she resented.
I don't understand parents who want to hang on to a child (typically a daughter though sometimes a son) when they themselves moved out of their own parents home and started their own family. Very selfish. Also parents who expect their children (again, usually daughters) to care for them in their old age as a nurse would when they did not do the same for their own parents. Hypocritical and selfish.
Either someone mentally broke her or she was born insane. This is a young, attractive, blonde, middle-class professional with no missing limbs, no deformities, no obesity. She has no foundation for her belief that she wouldn't find love.

The administrators of this hospital need to be investigate as well. Apparently they all ignored repeated complaints and suspicions made by medical specialist to the point where it looked like a cover up. All those in authority who defended her need to be investigated.

I was born at 7 months and weighed 2 lbs. There was no neonatal unit. They stuck me in an incubator and hoped I lived. I lived to tell the tale. Glad there was no Lucy when I was born.
Same here! I was in NICU for 2 months. So thankful I had caring nurses and Doctors. ❤
My G. Uncle Carl was born premature at 2 and half pounds ( Dad: 'everytime I hear the story he gets lighter') in 1892. No hope, the hospital said. His never too even-tempered pa blew a fuse, took him home and placed him above the coal range. He went on to be NZ swimming champion in every stroke and length, and just as short-tempered as his pa.

Same! I wasn’t even born in a hospital with a nicu. I had to be transferred. But I was put into an incubator and basically fought my way here to tell the tale just as you. I came home on breathing and heart monitors. Also grateful no Lucy was near

Just to correct something here. The consultants were not brought in. In the UK a consultant is the term used for the most senior doctors (although it is also used in a more general sense). These consultants were pediatricians working on the ward. They highlighted the high death rates to the management and raised concerns about Letby, she was always on the ward when an incident happened and was near they baby when a couple of the incidents happened. I think the difference is Lucy wanted to cause death while Beverly seemed to like the thrill of "saving" and just didn't care if that failed. For this reason I don't think Lucy has munchausen's by proxy, because they don't seek the death of their victims (or not primarily), rather the attention their victims bring to them when made sick. I read about some of the alleged things she said to grieving family, and she definitely seemed more sadistically attached to seeing the family's pain. (So maybe the families were her proxy and the infant just a tool to get her emotional fix). 🤢
At least one of the babies who did survive her attempts is permanently grossly disabled, needing 24 hour care and assisted feeding and respiration. The horror of what was inflicted on the babies and their families is grotesque. God only knows what is wrong with her.
I think her parents went through great lengths to conceive, then were overjoyed (as anyone would be) until Letby senselessly destroyed the baby's future. Maybe it's not God who knows what's wrong with her, but the devil.

Beverley Allitt was not a qualified nurse but a healthcare assistant (practical nurse in US terms). She couldn't administer drugs on her own so didnt have the access to patients Lettby did. Allit sounds like a Munchausen patient. Whereas Lettbys desire to experience intense emotion via others sounds like classical psychopath behaviour. She also harbours deep resentment toward the vulnerable the way a predator does. A cat who plays with her prey.

@@ZMS463 Nurses administer drugs, they're the main ones who do. I'm an ex ITU nurse who took her IV cert 30 plus years ago!!! With cancer patients we have protocols so I would write out the drug chart for my SHO to sign, particularly if they were new or busy. I think you are confusing prescribing drugs which used to be the doctors preserve but now nurses can prescribe certain meds too. I think insulin and potassium should be controlled drugs on wards now. That's how they kill undetected usually.

Beverley Allitt was a State Enrolled Nurse, which means she had a two-year training which was more practically focussed than that of a State Registered Nurse, who studied and was trained for three years. SENs were abolished around twenty years ago, so there is a large gap now between SRNs and the more-or-less untrained auxiliary nurses who are taking over more nursing duties, while the registered nurses take on more medical work. Instead of recruiting more doctors from abroad, the UK is also training more Physician Assistants.

Note: a consultant isn't an external investigator in the UK. A consultant is a top doctor in their field of expertise, the term describes the ranking of the doctor,. For example you have junior doctors and consultants. As such they didn't bring consultants in to investigate, instead the existing consultants/doctors raised concerns internally.
If it helps our American friends to understand: when it comes to medicine, a British "consultant" is the equivalent of an American "attending" 👍

I slept in a recliner and ate from the cafe downstairs. Unfortunately, being a nurse myself, I know not all of them care or are good people. This is so sad, God please help thise families 😢💔

My twins just came home from NICU after being there for 45 days.. this makes me absolutely sick. I think some of the nurses thought I was crazy for being there basically 24/7, but this is exactly why.. this is every mothers biggest fear. She is a disgusting, despicable human.

My grandson was in a children’s intensive care unit in a famous London hospital where he had one to one nursing. His nurses were so highly qualified and were so caring to my daughter and my grandson beat life threatening sepsis and multiple organ failure.
I feel for all the nurses out there now, and parents to be honest, it could happen anywhere.
Your poor grandson, I hope he is doing better now. My son also had sepsis last September (group strep a that turned into sepsis) and was rushed to intensive care at the Manchester children's hospital, and he too had a nurse with him 24 hours a day due to how poorly he was (he would have died if we hadn't taken him to hospital when we did, even tho earlier that day we took him the the doctors and they fobbed us off.
This is heartbreaking and I can't help but think about my son and his experience, and how amazing the nurses were who looked after him. Love to you and your grandson ❤

My best friends husband placed a camera above their daughters bed within the neonatal ward here in London, which allowed my friend & husband etc to check on their child round the clock and in real time. CCTV should be in every neonatal ward here in the Uk. There was CCTV in the Neonatal ward, but placed only at the door entrance. Not in the individual rooms. EDIT: consent was given by the hospital it was an aerial angle directed solely/only on their child from the child’s head to waist. And focused on their child’s crib only. And their child was in hospital for a total of 5 days. My friend had lost a child at 2 weeks old to cot death 5 years previously. Their child is now almost 1 years old and healthy.

But even if you have a system that is actually closed, not connected to the internet at any point, you still need to store all the video and have that accessible for some time after in case any queries arise. But I'm not even sure if it is possible on CCTV to see what someone is injecting, if they are supposed to be injecting something but they add an air bubble, or simply contaminate the needle it is not going to be seen. You're adding an extra risk for piece of mind when it might not actually provide protection.
You also have to consider at what age you consider that a child needs their privacy, also consider plenty of other people in hospitals that are vulnerable. CCTV on all beds or get the management to do their jobs properly?
I listened to the podcast"the trial of lucy letby" and one of the sickest things I have heard is that she killed one of the babies and suggests to the parents that they can give the baby a final bath . She then walks into the room as the are bathing and chats to the parents and was comparing that bath to the last one that she did ...Is that not one of the sickest things that you have heard ? The only reason that the 3rd triplet survived is that the parents went crazy with the hospital and insisted that he get moved to another hospital ..they did ... he survived thank god .....she needs to be dragged up those stairs and be made to sit in the courtroom

Seems bizarre to me that she saw her 'difficult birth' as *her* experience rather than her mother's. Of course her mother and or father must have told her she had a difficult birth: she couldn't have remembered it. Perhaps they told her that repeatedly. Given that she was an only child perhaps they felt and expressed to her the 'miracle' of her birth - of her survival - unusually strongly. Did she feel this was her finest hour?
Did she then want to relive what she could not remember but had been told about repeatedly, but found she couldn't feel the wonder of new life that she had heard so much about unless it was snatched away .. and grieved over by loving parents under her wondering gaze.
Fanciful? When LL was convicted her mother collapsed in court, sobbing and saying: "I did it. Take me instead."
"A grief collector"...a chilling phrase as ascribed to Letby in the wake of her conviction. Her reactions towards the killings are typical of a serial killer; sadism being a core component of her morbid enjoyment of perpetrating the act on the most helpless and vulnerable of beings.

@@saraf9081You are correct. I've been a paediatric nurse and mum of premature twins. They were in-patient for 5 weeks and required no intervention, not even oxygen, no meds nothing. My husband and I did all the care. They only needed to grow as they were merely underweight. Very few babies on ICU die.
There are lots of babies who merely need to gain weight before being discharged home. They require no intervention, or perhaps at most oxygen and feeding via a naso gastric tube for a week until their "suck" reflex came in.
I think there’s a jealousy angle at play as well.. targeting twins and triplets .. she being an only child and never having the joy of siblings … plus being the centre of attention when things are in chaos around you .. also something about having total control over vulnerable people who can’t complain or fight back brings out the worst in some people

The phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover”, is so true in this case. Because Lucy appeared sweet, mild mannered and attractive, the accusations against her weren’t believed for a long long time. What really draws my attention is the way that hospital administrators put their own selfish interests before the lives of other people . They should face charges as well.
This women was jealous of these babies and their loving family. She says at the start of her letter, “I’ll never get married or have children.” Says it all.
I read that Lucy was having an affair with a Dr that would be called to try and resuscitate these children, so she would have contact with him, because he had cut her off. Also, I want to want discuss my complete, total disgust at her behavior. I've had 2 children, both preemies that ended up in the NICU. I prayed EVERY minute of every day they would survive, and they both did. I can't even imagine the horror of these parents who's precious babies were murdered. May they be blessed. 🙏🙏🙏

According to an article I read, they first met at the beginning of 2016 , she already had killed several babies before she met him.
However he could kiss his career and marriage goodbye just bc he's associated with her and also he always tried to lift her spirits when she felt "down' because of baby deaths.
A police woman described Lucy Letby as beige. She was very normal and ordinary. Nothing strange stood out about her. And a criminal psychologist said she was an outlier as a serial killer usually has red flags and she didn't have any. A very creepy disturbing case.

The typical mortality rate was routinely between 2 -3 deaths per year. During Letby's year on the neo-natal ward there were 15 deaths and numerous near-deaths. Plus, deliberate insulin poisoning has been proven in at least one of the murders - making foul play an absolute certainty.

@ronald3836 the evidence was circumstantial. I read NHS hospitals and doctors have a culture of covering up their mistakes. They could have blamed her for the hospitals failings. But I wasn't on the jury. I hope she really is guilty as she'll spend the rest of her life in prison.
@@AR_112 I see a card full of crosses to indicate her presence, and then I read there are twice as many other cases where she was not present. It is easy to fool people with botched up statistics. This happened in a nearly identical case in the Netherlands, so any Dutch person reading about the Letby case is extremely skeptical. The Dutch nurse got life in prison, lost all her appeals, but the car was reopened and she was cleared. There were never any murders.
Apparently there were even more deaths in Lucy's unit in 2018-19. That was not her.
The only hard thing is the note she wrote, but we don't know how an innocent person reacts when accused of such crimes.
It's a shame this occurred in Cheshire again; the same county where Dr Harold Shipman was also arrested for murdering his patients. Cheshire's also the country where Ian Brady & Myra Hindley lived and were arrested (in the same town as Shipman).
I've heard all kinds of words chucked around, sociopath, psychopath, factitious by proxy, covert narcicist, evil... Nothing anyone has said about her seems to really hit the nail on the head other than noting that she clearly found the attention and chaos gratifying. Clearly she had no empathy for the babies or their parents but she definitely wasn't completely devoid of emotion. It seemed she cared for her parents and her rescue cats, and she was obviously in love with a doctor on the ward. (Although maybe she was in love with his attention more than him - who knows??)
She was so calm when being questioned and from the court transcripts that we were allowed to hear during the trial she she did a flawlessly clever job of answering questions on the stand - only slipping up once (when she said of recognising that a baby had collapsed 'I knew what I was "looking for" instead of "looking at". Despite a brilliant barrister, strong defence and never putting a foot wrong on the stand, she definitely didn't come across as innocent, just abnormally cold, calculating and manipulative.
Perhaps the most telling and disturbing feature of this for me is actually her parents' unwavering belief in her innocence after sitting through 10 months of evidence. Refusing to accept that your child has done something wrong and not holding them accountable is one of the most toxic and damaging parenting traits in the book. She even hinted herself at them being concerned about her to the point of being smothering. Her parents have been so powerfully supportive from the moment she brought the grievance against the trust, validating her as she has tried to shift the blame on to others, justify her actions and paint herself as the innocent and aggrieved party despite all the evidence to the contrary. While such deluded parenting wouldn't create a killer, it can raise someone who's entitled, selfish, unempathetic, unable to take responsibility and cowardly - all of which she has displayed at times. This is the reason she refused to come to court for sentencing and the reason she will probably never confess or read those victim impact statements or the comments made by the judge.
This case shows the inadequacy of psychiatry in matters relating to personality disorders.
One of the things that's been reported a lot in the UK is that Lucy Letby was very smothered by her parents and seems to have been very emotionally underdeveloped. Her bedroom was full of Disney toys. Perhaps she seems to have viewed herself as a kind of Disney princess and lived in a Narcissistic dreamworld. As reality intervened, she may have become more and more resentful.

Children need to experience the WHOLE range of emotions while growing up, in a supportive environment. This includes also experiencing negative emotions, like sadness, danger, disappointment, anger etc. However, some parents think that they are doing good to their children by denying this experience in their childhood. Such parents, and of course not surprising that she was the only child, obsessivly monitor their children, create an overly protective environment and prevent any negative emotional display. However, they cannot cancel this need. It is possible that Lucy subcontiously was seeking to experience negative emotions that she was denied in childhood.

Problem with that approach is in cases like Mid Staffs Scandal, where it was estimated between 400 and 1200 patients died unnecessarily due to poor care resulting from staff shortages, hospital infections and terrible managment in general. Cases like that are widespread in the NHS while nurse murderer is extremely rare. I can understand why they went for reviews not after a single nurse, even though in this case it was urgently needed.
@@tanchella What bugs me the most is that these deaths were apparently suspicious, yet they were not properly investigated. Now Lucy is put in jail based mostly on statistics (and, yes, her not is weird, but she probably wrote it when she was being accused and I cannot imagine what such an accusation could do to an innocent person).
2x the normal death rate over 2 years or so could have all kinds of causes and could also just be a coincidence. Statistically, this happens. If you look at all UK maternity wards, you will find one with a death rate significantly above average simply because that is how numbers work.
Also there were deaths that could not be connected to her. Does not prove she is innocent, but to conclude she is guilty... I don't know
Unless I missed something, all these deaths were reported as natural deaths. Maybe that's what they were. If they had been investigated at the time, that could have cleared Lucy right there and then (and it could also have caught her and prevented more deaths, if she is indeed guilty).
The whole case is extremely similar to a Dutch case. The nurse got a life sentence and lost all her appeals. Some years later the case was reopened and she was cleared. The final conclusion was that no murders happened at all.
@@ronald3836 One case was reported as natural but the insulin level was far too high but without another substance that would occur if it was natural. That proves that the insulin was injected.
Also, she was in attendance for 25 of the unexpected deaths with the most any other member of staff was on the ward was 7. That is far too high to be coincidence. There is also her other odd behaviour like lack of emotion when babies died, keep going into the room where parents were grieving and she'd been told not to.
@@nlwilson4892 it does not prove that she injected the insulin, and this blood value was noticed only years later, too late for a double check. An athlete who is caught doping is entitled to a second test before he is sanctioned. Lucy is now in prison for life and was denied such an opportunity.
We had a similar case in the Netherlands. The botched statistics pointed at a particular nurse, they then find botched medical evidence. After many years the case was reopened and she was cleared, there were never any murders.
@@nlwilson4892 and her atypical behaviour does not prove anything (DrGrande mentioned many times in other videos btw). I suspect that her behaviour is what made her colleagues suspicious. Then when you remove 2/3 of the cases where she was not present, you get a list of the 1/3 remaining cases where... guess what... only she was present each and every time.
The fact that her friends are standing behind her is so heinous.
Why? If you were told one of your dear friends had committed a similar murder would you believe it?
They will be telling themselves it's a miscarriage of justice. At the same time they will also be processing her potential guilt.
Cases like this are always so disturbing but this one really had a profound effect on my mind/psyche, I just can’t fathom such deviant thinking that someone would get any pleasure or whatever they feel from killing a defenseless baby that’s already in need of extra assistance to live. It’s heartbreaking and I must admit it’s also maddening, it’s these cases that makes me realize why people want vengeance because it’s such a horrifying crime. Her bedroom looked like that of a 10 year old girl...teddy bears, stuffed animals and the like.. Arrested development,, for sure. This case is a nightmare come to life. The banality of evil writ large.

Letby was addicted to seeing not just grief, but the highest level of, for there’s nothing more painful than losing a child. It isn’t something a parent would be able to stuff down and grieve later, once out of the presence of hospital staff, particularly since these were newborns who were functioning well and their deaths completely unexpected. It makes me sick to mention this, but her sadism was so extreme she caused most of the babies pain. I don’t know if relevant, but the diary entries of hers I read were the musings akin to that of a teenaged girl. Her bedroom was like a teen’s and even the cover of her 2016 diary (2016) was not something one would expect an adult woman to choose. I wish it could be determined if this much loved, privileged, only child was born with the personality disorder that turned her to serial murder or if it was created.
I worked with Genene Jones who was a baby killer in a Texas hospital in the 80’s. Her motive was different, she had a very strong personality, wanted to be in charge, and I think she wanted to save the babies so she could be seen as a hero. I think we all try to understand how and why things like this can happen; for the first time it made me realize that I can’t possibly understand or relate to what goes on in the brain of a mentally unstable person.
Unless one is psychopath (their brains lack the part of the brains where feelings like empathy, guilt etc. Are felt or produced) one must be grown to hold some deep rooted hate, unhappiness, powerlesness within them.
Especially those who attack children... they choose the children or othervice less capable people to be target because they feel power over preying the defendless. Its not rare that abused one becomes also abuser when they grow up. Or then she was entitled child herself, wanted all attention to be directed to herself.
I think she even wanted to hurt the parents...she wanted to destroy their joy and hope.
Was she incapable of herself to get children or what happened in her own childhood that she became so bitter to do such a heinous acts...
Nobody knows. And its irrelevant now. But those psychiatrics who wants to understand should gain deeper look to her personal life and history behind social media images.
She is not mentally ill. She has chosen to be EVIL. It is truly our free will and no one has excuses to do what she did.
She chose to cause pain. She chose to be one more illness on this planet. She chose to not make the effort to control her demons.

I would have become a vegetarian a very long time ago if I wasn’t highly experienced in the problems that are encountered when removing meat for certain blood types and genetics in people, that’s not to say vegetarianism is bad for everyone because it isn’t.

Filing a grievance was her only option, but I agree: she had to have some brass neck to do it.

I'm well aware how awful humans can be to one another but I will never become desensitised, it's still sick, it's still shocking what people are capable of. These were innocent babies, teeny innocent little souls with no defence, I am a mother and I dare not even try to put myself in those poor parents shoes, it is shocking and it's absolutely tragic.

I had a bit of an overreaction to this story when it first came out due to being a postpartum mess with a NICU baby. I don't usually cry reading the news but this broke me. Those poor babies and parents. It was especially horrific when a mother found the nurse actively murdering her child, only to be convinced the baby was ok and for the nurse to complete the attack.

Same thing here, I've cried a lot. I started my life in an incubator (my mother was a junkie) then returned to hospital a couple of weeks after discharge, after being attacked by my mother (shaken baby syndrome). I have been told by doctors and social workers that I should have been put down at birth and that It would be a waste of money to send me to uni as I must have remained brain damaged. I have also been told by a lady (a secondary school teacher, who had the French equivalent of a PhD) that she had 'babysat' my mother when she was several months pregnant with me, suicidal, and taking huge doses of psychiatric drugs and painkillers, that at the time she had thought it would be better if my mother had an abortion, as some of the drugs would necessarily cross the placenta barrier, and that even if I was born healthy, growing up with someone like that as a mother would just result in a totally messed up human being, if the child even survived to adulthood. I had just turned 19 when I met that lady for the first time and she was surprised at how well I'd turned out, and relieved that, unlike my mother, I wasn't addicted to various drugs. I am convinced that if someone like Lucy had been working at the maternity where I was born, she would have targeted me for killing. I could also have become her victim as a mother, as twins run in my family. If my health had allowed it after giving birth, I would have been one of those helicopter parents, sitting on the nurses' shoulders and asking questions, and I am sure she would have resented it, I would have made an enemy of her, and she would have punished me by hurting my child.ren. I am absolutely horrfied by what she did, not just to the children who died, but to the ones who survived but will never be able to live independently. She's robbed them of their life just as effectively as if she'd kill them.
Being premature, or born at 1000 grams or so, does not mean that a baby will not grow into a healthy child and adult. I've heard doctors refer to children like that as 'shrimps' which should be put down, which I deeply resent. 2 decades ago, there was an uplifting story about 3 triplets (conceived naturally) who were born very prematurely (the mother had to have a C section as one of the kids was an ectopic pregnancy and could not be allowed to develop to full term). I’ve dealt with such criminally minded people as a detective for many years with child protection. Letby is clearly someone without empathy and that’s a common trait amongst psychopathic personalities. I’ve dealt with sex offenders like this who see children as objects and not humans . She in my view saw these children as objects and nothing more . They fulfilled a desire to be relevant and as the Dr in the video states , sympathy . She’s a very very dangerous young woman . She should get a full life sentence, but in such cases I do now think the death penalty should be introduced . People like Sidney Cooke , Ian Huntley etc should have hung years ago .

@@bakets7987 No death penalty. Abolished years ago. Just as well. Stefan Kiszko, innocent, was in jail for 16 years for raping and murdering a child. 3 detectives had witheld evidence of his innocence. He was set free but died before he was compensated. Had he been hung...!!!

Her actions can not be absolved and nothing could ever correct the action of taking the lives of several newborn babies. One of investigators of this case did mention that one of the reasons , because of pressure of work the babies were murdered just to get rid of the pressure of work. I find that this is more of a realistic reason.
My heart goes out to all the parents who have lost their precious babies so needlessly. I can't imagine the depth of their grief. I pray that God gives them the strength to deal with their loss and for Him to comfort them during this most difficult time in their lives.
Just a small point, in the UK national health the people who are called consultants are the equivalent of attending physicians in the US. Consultants are usually the head of a team that includes doctors in training in the specialty. So the consultants were Lucy Letby's coworkers, not people brought from outside.
I thought that, when he said consultants were brought in. They were the doctors already working on the unit so they knew what was happening but were disbelieved when they brought it to the attention of the hospital management.
I believe one of the consultants asked a statistician to review his work, the statistician supported his work. But it wasn't the management who asked for the review.
I am a victim of at least one evil consultant. I survived because I used my wit and prayer and still fight for justice. So consultant or nurse, evil comes from very trusted people.
I work as a nurse, I am also a mother and I was physically sickened that she not only took lives, she ruined so many lives.. all so that she could be the centre of attention for a short period of time. The lifelong pain she has caused to these families, the impact on the doctors and nurses that fought to save these babies, and then there are the infants suffering lifelong disability - all because of her. I could NEVER intentionally hurt one of my patients, especially not an innocent baby. I was devastated and disgusted at the same time.

Good job summarizing her crimes. Years ago worked in newborn nursery and can't imagine how she got to place she did. There is just nothing more beautiful and innocent than a newborn baby.
My feeling is that she was jealous of these women and their lives having babies. It is like she took sadistic joy in causing pain to the families for what she didn't have. The babies seem to be collateral in her bid to destroy the parents.
The hospital administrators made the right choice in deciding not to accept younger patients. They couldn't determine with certainty the cause for the disproportionate deaths, so the only way to save lives was to not admit those patients.
My 15 year old son was a nicu baby, he was there for 3.5 months. Our nurses were amazing. It sickens me to think about the grief and sadness these poor parents endured only to find out their babies were murdered. What a horrible betrayal. Rip to the innocent little lives she stole.
I wish people like Lucy would reach out and get the help they need for themselves, before they cross a line causing irreparable harm to others.
This is a good point. It kind of made me think of the guy in Plymouth who committed the mass shooting - these people just quietly coming apart in silence. And then innocent people pay for it.

How come it took so long for the hospital to put two and two together. Everyone was asleep at the wheel whilst babies were dying.
I once visited a neonatal care unit because it was part of preparation for my former wife giving birth to our daughter. I cried the whole time I was there because the babies were so small and helpless plus my family lost a premature infant in the NICU ward and a nurse was suspected of killing him. My father said that the nurse was really rough with the babies and that he had witnessed this himself.
I wanted to become a neonatal intensive care nurse but that experience made me realize that I was too emotional to handle the job. Plus, up to that point I had only worked in construction and lumber jacking and if you make a mistake in those trades it can usually be fixed without much problem. Not so with the babies. I lacked the confidence in myself to never ever make a mistake with a premature baby. One millimeter off on the meds and a baby could be injured or die. Thats for stronger and better focused people.
Im almost 60 now and still doing construction... And a grandfather to my daughters children.
