Build a Large Wood Sign from Start to Finish

  • This is a video to show how I assemble my signs. The wooden canvas in this video measures 28x38. A lot of wood sign makers use 1x4's for slats. I like to save those beautiful 1x4's for the front of the sign. It also makes the sign thicker and heavier if you use 1x4's for slats.
    I also find that it's cheaper to buy a thin piece of plywood for $15 and cut it down into 2" slats! I try my best to explain this in the video but I suck at it. For the 1/4" slats I use my $30 electric stapler from Wal-Mart along with some wood glue. Does that make sense? (Note: Sometimes I have to hammer in the staples the rest of the way.)
    Because the 3/8" slats are a little thicker I moved up to an air gun stapler thingy. I bought it for $30 at home depot. It's boooomb! Love it! You will need an air compressor to plug up to it though. I try my best to explain this in the video. But I'm not a good teacher. LOL Sorry!
    Let me know if you have any questions!
    P.S. I make my small signs the same way. The only time I use 1x4's for slats is when I make huge signs like this. However, I didn't have any lying around so I pulled out the 3/8" slats.
    XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

    Hello, I don't have a question about the building, but I couldn't help noticing your makeup. Your lipstick, in particular, caught my eye. Could you tell me more about it, please?

    I was recently working on something similar for my wife and was doing some research. Are you worried at all about the wood movement? I would expect the 1x6s to move a lot more than the plywood slats, putting tension and bowing the entire piece over time.

    Please use hearing protection when using power tools. As a Hearing care professional I fit many people with hearing aids that use these tools. It is the only way too prevent noise induced hearing loss
    Even foam earplugs are better than nothing. Custom plugs or muffs are better,!

    May I suggest to reduce planer snipe is to slightly raise the infeed table. I have reduced the snipe to almost nothing.

    Question. I'm making a pallet board sign with some 3d art on it. I was worried about it being so heavy so I decided to put the pieces together using pocket hole screws instead of a vertical piece in the back. What is your take on this?

    why not use dowels instead of all those staples?

    • @pinksawdustllc344
      @pinksawdustllc344  4 роки тому

      mlr080965 staples are super inexpensive. I’ve used the jig before to fasten the boards with the holes but the screws made my boards bow. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      @@pinksawdustllc344 I meant dowels not screws. I guess staples are a quick fix and will do the job!
