Omg, thank you so much!! I have spent over 3 hrs trying to find a durable topcoat for a sign I made for a client. I thought I knew what I was going to use then realized I have a lot of white and really need it to stay clear as long as possible. You have been a God send! Happy 2021🎉
I love the info in this video!! Over the weeks or years... doesn't your wood stain seep through your white paint? I heard of ppl having troubles of knots coming through painted areas... what type of paint do you use to stop that? or do you use any shellac on top of your wood stain before painting any design? THANKS!!!
Hi Sarah wow i have found your info at the right time. For a while now i have wanted to have my own wooden signs in our Garden. I. would have to start frim A lol. i am really looking forward to your Vlogs x
What is the best sealer for oil paintings on Fibre cement? Help I need a clear high Gloss non yellowing waterproof transparent clear finnish for outside..
such great information, thank you. my question is, can I seal vinyl signs that will be outside using the polyurethane method you showed? I did a project like that and not my vinyl letters are starting to bubble up, not sure why? please help with advice on how to fix or what to do next do I don't have my vinyl letters bubble up after applying polyurethane.
I have a question and I really hope you see this. My pup recently passed away and before we buried him we made 3 separate wooden frames with his two front paws using acrylic paint. We will be adding his name and date-date as well but was not sure if spraying with acrylic sealer should be done. I have never done this so I am worried that the spray will mess with the paws. Would you recommend using the spray? They will be all indoor but one may be traveling a bunch (so just suitcase/luggage) I just want to know the best route to save his print for as long as possible and without damage. I hope you see this and any help will be appreciated.
Hello. I am working on a 5 ft cedar slab that will be an exterior bench. I will be painting artwork on this bench. I normally do artwork for interior and I use a triple thick glaze spray, multiple coats, but they are not for outside. Can you recommend a high gloss sealant? I bought polyurethane, but I’m worried about the yellowing. The paintings will be sea turtles and a couple of fish
This was wonderful! I was looking on Amazon for the spray and they do not carry the exact one you used. For exterior, I found Varathane Water Based Ultimate Spar Urethane on Amazon. Would that work for an outdoor large wood sign? The other sprays on Amazon were for interior. Thanks so much for the great info!
Very informative video! I have question. I made a craft project with a round wood sign. I used 2 ounce craft paint. Navy blue, white and red. It will be hanging on my front door with a porch over hang plus the afternoon sun hitting on it. I want to use polyurethane on it to protect it from the elements. Which one should I use? And will the polyurethane yellow any of the colors on the wood? Thank you.
If I am painting a design using acrylic paint on wood, and the sign will be completely outside exposed to the elements, would the water based polycrilic be my best option for the sealer?
All of these clear options are for interior... which would fine I suppose on a porch or closed patio, but what is best for outside in the elements like in a garden?
I would like to make a small table for wedding guests to sign (then seal) at a wedding. It will be maple. What would you suggest? Paint pens? Then Polyurethane ? Appreciate your thoughts.
Any acrylic paint, paint pens would work, for guests to use. Opt for water based. Then seal with a polyacrylic. Sounds like a wonderful piece of furniture.
Thank you for the video! Very informative! I do have a question. I am making round wood door hangers and have painted the customer's names in white. Everything I have used seems to be turning them yellow. Which product do you recommend?
Hi! Thank you for the information, it helped a lot. I do have a question about the water base sealer spray, can that we used on wood that i used oil base stain on?
I paint and then decorate wooden boxes with adhesive plastic crystals (glittering type). These are used as jewelry boxes. I wanted to protect the finished surfaces and so used polyurethane / acrylic / modpodge as sealants. These coatings are supposed to dry completely clear however I feel they are leaving a very thin residue on the crystals making them a little dull. Is this what these finishes can do or is there a still better one? Thanks for any adivise.
You boxes sound lovely! These finishes will be clear on paint and wood, but over crystals I think they will always have some type of cloudy look. The light can't reflect as nicely when they are coated. If you are using a strong adhesive that should be enough to hold them in place. Hope that helps.
If you use just oil to bring out the wood grain it may be difficult to get the paint to stick. But I would try it on a scrap piece of wood and see how it holds up. Good luck!
I use that version on signs outside. I know it says for interior use, however I have had great luck with the product. Thanks for watching and checking.
I have some large natural edged pieces of oak wood that I want to turn into garden signs. I'm worried they will warp as I'm not sure they're totally dried out, and I have no idea what to seal them in to make them completely weatherproof once painted. Would yacht varnish be sufficient?
I can't advise on the type of wood, I would make sure they are dry first but that's hard to tell. As for the sealer, the Polyurethane I mention in the video would be ideal. You can apply a few coats to ensure it is properly covered and waterproof.
I am going to try to make a wood sign for my bathroom. Just wondering what paint and sealer do you recommend for this? I’m lost at what to use. I’m asking because one I’m not a very crafts person and two I know moisture from steamy hot shower may mess up sign. Hate to sound like a dummy, just need help? Thank you so much 👍👍
Hi Debbie. Any craft paint will work for a sign in your bathroom. If you get a lot of moisture be sure to seal it. To make it easier grab a spray version of a water based sealer and use that to cover your sign. Wait until the paint is completely dry, take it outside, and give it a few light coats following the directions on the can. Hope that helps!
I would not recommend putting stain over the vinyl letters, you may risk damaging the vinyl. If you are making a sign you can stain the wood first then add the letters. If you want to protect the sign with vinyl letters you can use one of these methods to seal over the vinyl.
I still struggle with the letters becoming yellow. I stain my wood, I use chalk white paint for letters and even after days after letting it dry. I put any of these sealants and my white letters, yellow. Ugh, what am I doing wrong?
That's tough! It sounds like your method is correct. I personally don't use chalk paint on my signs.I use a satin or gloss acrylic paint. It's possible the paint could be absorbing the sealant differently. Maybe try a test piece with a different type of paint for the sign and see what happens. Best of luck with your signs.
Thanks for the info! I've watched so many diy videos, and I feel like the sealing step is never discussed. Thank you for the clarification!
Love this video! Thank you for going over them so clearly! Definitely helped a ton.
I'm so glad!

So happy you found this helpful!
These 3 methods were very informative!! I'm going to have to add the spray sealer to my list of products now. Cool!💕
Exactly the break down I needed! Thanks so much!
You're so welcome!

Did you find a sealer? I am also looking
@@DanasMakingAMessAgain No I did not.

Yes that would be the way to go.
I painted some wood pieces for indoor home decor with acrylic paint , do i need to seal them? And which one should I use if so?
The polyacrylic in your link when you click it the description says to protect interior..... It doesn't say anything about exterior....
Super helpful, thank you! I'm making an outdoor sign. Will the spray polyurethane work for that even though the product says "Interior" on the can?
Yes it will work. I have found that this particular sealer holds up really well indoors and out. So glad you found this helpful!
Hi! Would you recommend sealing a mounted indoor wood restaurant sign?
I really don't think you need to. Unless that sign is exposed to the elements it will hold up just fine.
Very helpful, thanks for all the tips!
Just love your video so helpful and easy to follow thank you
Thank you, so glad you found it helpful!
All of these clear options are for interior... which would fine I suppose on a porch or closed patio, but what is best for outside in the elements like in a garden?
I would use the Polyurethane, great for indoor or outdoor. Use a few coats, waiting for them dry in between, to get a really good seal.
Thank you so much. Just what I was looking for!!
Great job thank you!
Can these methods be used on wood floors Especially the first one.?
I do not have experience staining or sealing wood floors so I am not sure at all if these methods would work.
Thank you for the video! Very informative! I do have a question. I am making round wood door hangers and have painted the customer's names in white. Everything I have used seems to be turning them yellow. Which product do you recommend?
If you have used white acrylic paint I would opt for a clear polycrylic. That works best for me and I've never had any yellowing.
Does it matter which seal to use depending on your paint type? For example, exterior paint, oil based paint, water based paint.
This video helped me a lot. Thanks for the share. 👍
Hi! Thank you for the information, it helped a lot. I do have a question about the water base sealer spray, can that we used on wood that i used oil base stain on?
I have done that and it works fine. Just be sure your stain and paint are completely dry. It will hold up just fine.

Hi. I want to bring out the grain in my wood and was thinking of using an oil but can I use acrylic paint on top of the oil for my design?
If you use just oil to bring out the wood grain it may be difficult to get the paint to stick. But I would try it on a scrap piece of wood and see how it holds up. Good luck!
Hello, wanted to double check with you regarding the spray poly link. The bottle says interior use, is there an exterior option as well? Thank you.
I use that version on signs outside. I know it says for interior use, however I have had great luck with the product. Thanks for watching and checking.
Loving this. Do you travel to different shows to demonstrate how to treat wood signs? What wood product did you use?
Would these seals work if you are using the sign outdoors?

Is the water bast ok to use in side the home for people that have breathing problems?
Yes, just make sure to apply it in a well ventilated area and let it dry completely. It doesn't have any odor once it's cured.
All of the product links are for paints that say interior, should I be getting one for exterior? Does it make a difference?
If you are sealing over the paint then it doesn't matter if it's interior or exterior paint. It will be protected.

Sarah Vanderkooy thank you so much 🤗
If I put vinyl on a wood sign for outside I bought from Walmart. Should I seal it? Thank you! Carrie
I would not seal over the vinyl, if you use permanent vinyl it will hold up just fine.

Do you cover the entire wood are or only the painted area?
Good question. If your sign will be outside, cover the whole area. That not only protects your paint but also the bare wood.
Thank you so, so much for this information. You explained and demonstrated everything perfectly. I've been waiting so long for a video like this.
Helpful! Thanks!
Thank you for your videos.
What kind of wood do you use for exterior and interior.
I almost always use pine boards, the kind you can find at Home Depot or a similar store.
If I have an outside wood sign with vinyl letters can I stain it ? I want to make sure the Stain will not hurt the vinyl. Great video new subscriber.
I would not recommend putting stain over the vinyl letters, you may risk damaging the vinyl. If you are making a sign you can stain the wood first then add the letters.
If you want to protect the sign with vinyl letters you can use one of these methods to seal over the vinyl.
What brand is the spray?
Thanks! Very helpful :) Going to try spray finish on my project!
video starts at 2:45
TLDR: polyurethane oil on oil (causes yellowing), water on water (stays same), spray for larger projects.
Hello, will putting a sealer over the vinyl stop the vinyl from peeling?
It will not, It will protect the wood but not necessarily make the vinyl stick better.
thank you i really needed this information!!
I'm so glad I could help.
Love these insights and the comparison. Your summary st the end was very informative, too.
Great tips Sarah! I’ve used those areosol options and they worked great!
