I love this sign and had to make one. I found a beautiful frame at Hobby Lobby last week that didnt have glass or a back on it. I got a peice of glass put in it and it came out great.
Hey Christy, my first cricut project was heavily inspired by your large farmhouse sign video. Thank you very much. I'm off and running, making Christmas presents.
Girl! You make that look so easy! I can only see myself trying to make that frame. I would have that stain all over my sweater all over the table and it would be too small! You do beautiful work!

hi..thanks for your beautiful video...just want to ask..what programme that you use to design the wordings of the signboard? if dont mind..can u share plsss..tq
Hi! I use to use stencil all the time until I started using vinyl. It’s soooo much easier and saves so much time to not have to prep your stencil, then paint several layers with drying time between layers, to get a perfect stencil. I still will use stenciling but only if there is a color of vinyl I can’t get or if I want a certain look. Stenciling looks nicer sometimes but mostly vinyl is great.👍🏻
Hi thank you! Shipping for a sign like this is around $20 depending on where you ship. Smaller signs are less. Etsy calculates.the shipping when customers purchase and they pay before I ship. Then I just purchase shipping labels from my Etsy account. Other wise you can use USPS website to figure shipping based on length width and height, and weight of a package.
Hi! The only issue is the sign board... the luan will bow and bend if you sit it upright , it is best to store is laid down flat. I haven't had any issues tho after the framed are on, they seem to stabilize it.
about to make my first sign, but I cant figure out if i should use 631 or 651. What did you use? Should it be permanent? Didnt think about using mod podge til i read a comment below. Is it absolutely needed?
Hi! I use both 631 and 651. I prefer permanent on signs but I can’t always get permanent vinyl that’s matte. Most permanent is glossy, except for black and white. So if I don’t want glossy letters in a certain color I use 631. Mod podge is good for temp vinyl but I don’t use it for permanent much unless it starts bubbling or coming up off the paint. Hope that helps!
Honestly I can't yell a difference in selling. I don't think most people notice the difference. I have found it is mostly the design that sells a certain sign for me.
@@AppalachianHomeCo so, is it one if those minor details you wouldn't even want to complicate the sale of a sign, and just simply not give the option, leaving it up to your own discretion?
Not sure if Im the only one but when I remove the vinyl pieces with tweezers or the weeding tool, it leaves little holes in the wood from the picking, I tried this with oracle 651, could that be why? ( stickiness) or is that unavoidable?
I ❤️ it!!!!!! Question how do you put the hangers in the back so people can hang it ? I want to try a sign like this for my house but idk how to put the hangers
Hi thank you!! I use sawtooth hangers generally even for large signs. I nail or screw them in depending on what kind I have at the time... make sure to attach them near the top thru both the sign board and the top frame board. Hope that makes sense!
I’ve been wanting to make a farmhouse sign very much like this one but I have issues with transferring the little words and the squashes because they want to tear. I weld .. idk what I’m going wrong.
Hi! Congrats on your first sign! Yes I usually use Mod Podge Matte Sealant Spray on most signs. Just make sure all your letters are attached well or the sealant will curl them. They do have a glossy version if you like a glossy finish.
Hello! So I have been watching some of your videos which I find helpful. I am confused about the printing. I own a critcut but I have never used it. I want to print a sign like this but would I only need a black vinyls to transfer it onto my wood?
Hi! Yes for this sign you would need the black vinyl as well as transfer tape to apply it to your sign. Clear peel and stick is what I was referring to and it does work like transfer tape. I found it in the shelf liner section and have used it before. I now use regular transfer tape Greenstar Layflat clear medium tack from US Cutter and also Transferrite medium tack clear I think I also found on US Cutter.
Hi! I do have an Etsy shop and take custom orders there, just message me and I’ll be glad to do you a custom sign.👍🏻 www.etsy.com/shop/TheAppalachianHomeCo
Hi! For simple vinyl cutting it doesn’t really matter which machine you use they both cut the same. But for this I did use the Maker because i use it all the time for lots of different things and just always have ready to go!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Your sign is absolutely beautiful. What is your favorite paint to use on your signs and how long do you let it cure before adding the vinyl lettering? Do you seal your sign before applying the. Only? I have had issues with my transfer tape (Walmart duck brand) pulling up my paint even after sticking the transfer tape to my clothes first.🥴 You just make it look so effortless.😍☺️
Thank you that’s so nice of you☺️ Mt favorite paints are Valspar, Gliden, and Kilz. They work really well with vinyl and will allow the vinyl to stick after only a couple hours of drying. Other paints I have to leave overnight. And I have had many comments about the contact brand from Walmart pulling up paint! It depends on the paint and drying time. I switched to regular transfer tape and like it better I use Greenstar brand Layflat clear medium tack👍🏻👍🏻 If you still have problems pull off the transfer against the grain of your wood and it will help some.😊
I wish these videos would explain slowly how to use a cricut I come to these videos to see if this is something I’d like to do but this looks so overwhelming for someone who has no clue what a cricut is!
Thank you for all of your tutorials!! I need help!!! I’m about to pull my hair out!! My vinyl will not transfer to my painted luan!! What am I doing wrong!! Also when I tried to make a stencil with contact paper it made a HUGE mess!! It stuck to my brand new cricut mat and the cricut butchered the stencil!! Please help!!! TIA
Hi! Ooh been there before😬. On the vinyl there is a couple things you can do. If you lightly sanded the sign after painting to remove roughness try going back over it with another coat and a small foam roller, let dry overnight. If that doesn’t solve then it’s the paint. Some paint WILL NOT work well with vinyl for some reason. Valspar satin paints seems to work great, Gliden works well, Behr is NOT the best for vinyl for me. I don’t know what the difference is but there is one. Drying for 24 hours does help tho. On the contact paper try using a light grip mat vs. a standard grip if u have one. I use old mats and tape the corners sometimes with contact paper. Also try adjusting the pressure in your material settings, it may be cutting too deep for your brand contact paper. I’d start in increments of 10 and go down until you still get cut thru but less “wrinkling”. Hope that helps!
Thank you soo much for you response!!! I’m gonna give this a try and hope it works!!! I love all your videos!!! Keep up the good work!! Your such an inspiration!!
Hi, I like your process. Have a few question please... Where did you get that frame board from? What are those tools you use to hold the edges together before you staple them together? What app did you you design your font in on your iPad? Is it hard to learn Cricket? ..
Hi thank you! The frame boards I ripped from a 2x4, but Lowe’s carries the same size, which is 0.75 thick by 1.5” wide. The tools holding the corners are corner clamps, I think I have them linked in the description. I used Inkscape to design the letters on my laptop. I drew the swashes in a program called Procreate on the iPad. Then uploaded the swashes and svg file from Inkscape into Cricut. It is not hard to learn, but there is a lot to learn and it just takes a little patience! Hope that answers your questions!
@@AppalachianHomeCo where did you find the original font from? Was the original font from inkscape? I'm about to take the dive and buy a stencil cutter machine etc. I'm a bit nervous about not being able to learn everything. In inkscape I can design all my fonts? Thanks a million!
The font I used is called “Gybella” and you can find it at Creative Market, I have a link for it in the description box under the video. Once you install it on your computer Inkscape will recognize and list it in the font drop down box. It does this for any new fonts you install in your computer and the ones you already have. Be sure when you are installing font to select “install for all users”. This will allow your programs like Inkscape and design space to recognize new fonts. You also will need to close those programs before u install a font, then reopen the program, and it will be listed with the others. Hope that makes sense. You can pretty much do whatever u want in Inkscape with all your fonts, but if u install the ones that are for personal use only, sometimes they will appear cut off. Commercial fonts have always worked for me tho.
Hi. I bought the wood from Lowes. The sign back is made from luan board. If you ask at Lowe’s they can help you find it. You can also get either 2x4’s and rip them with a table saw to 1.5”x0.75”, or Lowe’s also has 1x2 pine boards precut to that size you can use for frames. Good luck making those signs!
Yes I have gotten a few comments about filming sawing the frames. I missed filming this one but will be making a similar sign this week . . will definitely film the frames in detail!
Not yet! I need to do some research on it but would really love to have one in the hopefully near future. I think it cuts a much smaller area than a regular Cricut, and I want to check and see what materials you can cut with it. Thank you so much!!
OMG. I don't think I've ever seen a channel with so many videos on Farmhouse signs! I don't know if you're ever going to get 70,000+ views for this kind of video again but you should do what you enjoy doing and not just what brings in the views. Try doing collabs with other channels! That helps get your channel seen because your other crafts are really cute!
Hi! I think this one I charged $60 for but the buyer was local. I would charge around $80 or more if I were shipping because of all the shipping hassle and packaging materials!👍🏻
The programing part is what I was worried about and you make it look easy. Hope I can too. Me and computers AHHHH. I call mine F.r.e.d. stands for F#@$in ridiculous electronic device 🤣🤣😂
Hi! I mostly use water based paints unless I paint for exterior purposes. This paint is water based..I usually seal with polycrylic. And I use mainly Valspar, Kilz, or Glidden paints...my favs.
Hi! The luan was $16 for a full sheet and I used about 1/3 sheet so $5.50, plus framing which cost $1.00 for 8’ ( I used 16’ so that would be $2). The paint was low cost I buy in gallons so say $1 for paint, and cost for vinyl was about $3. So I would say the whole material cost was around $11-$12.
Yes I mainly use two kinds, Cricut brand and Oracal 631 (temporary) and Oracal 651 (permanent). I like temporary if you want a matte finish, permanent has limited colors available in matte, at least with Oracal.
Hi! I will have an online shop fully up and running hopefully next month. I do have a small Etsy shop TheAppalachianHomeCo. I do take custom orders you can message me there if ever you are looking for something.
Hi. I searched and Gybella doesn’t seem to be available for free download anymore. Creative Market does have it for purchase with commercial license for only $6 right now tho!
Hi. I usually use stencils in I want a more rustic look or if I want the letters antique looking. The vinyl is crisp and clean and I use that for more modern and polished looking signs. Also if there is a color I can’t get in vinyl I will stencil!
Hi. I use two brands all the time ....Cricut permanent glossy or removable matte, and also Oracal 631(removable) and 651 (permanent). Both are great vinyls.
Thank you so much! I found this font on Creative Market, it used to be only $2, but I think the price has changed. I did check for free versions but haven't been able to find this exact font for free download. I do look for new fonts often and will post if I find any similar ones available for free.:)

Hi, where did you purchased your wood? Name? I have a hard time looking for a type of wood for signs.. really want to try and make some!! Thanks
Can you please do a step-by-step video on how to do the frame please
Yes I have gotten a few comments about filming sawing the frames. I missed filming this one but will be making a similar sign this week . . will definitely film the frames in detail!
Love this!!! Was wondering did you use a matte vinyl or glossy? I have glossy but really like that matte look
Thank you!! I did use the Oracal 651 matte black. I love it too I got a big roll from Amazon I think they should still have it.👍🏻
Ty!!!!
Do you have a cricut joy? I got one hoping to make bigger signs like this. I definitely will make this one. I LOVE it! Thank you for sharing.
Not yet! I need to do some research on it but would really love to have one in the hopefully near future. I think it cuts a much smaller area than a regular Cricut, and I want to check and see what materials you can cut with it. Thank you so much!!
Where do you buy the frame boards? Thanks for sharin!
Hi! I usually get 2x4s and 1x2s from Lowe’s or a local building supply store. Wood is usually cheaper at the building supply. 👍🏻
What kind of hanging hardware do you use
Hi! I use sawtooth hangers from Amazon mainly. For extra large signs I use the larger ones.
Wow, thank you! That is a great idea and I do have some other content filmed I need to post. Thanks for the tips!
What is the font size? I tried zooming but I can’t make it out. Thanks! 💕
Hi! Which video / font are you referring to? My comments sometimes don’t show which video you commented on sorry!
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home this video lol. The smaller words.
How much would you charge for that type of sign?
😂 Lol I feel that way too some days!
Beautiful job, what kind/brand is your hand held sander
Hi thank you so much! I use a TaskForce and also a Porter Cable orbital palm sander I love them!
Love your video! What kind of vinyl do you use?
Hi thank you! I use mostly Cricut brand and Oracal brand. For signs I use permanent vinyl.👍🏻
What printer did you use? I would to try this it seems so fun!
Hi! It is fun... I use a Cricut to do my vinyl lettering for all my projects. Lately I have been using Cricut Maker.
How did you attach the hanging material to the back?
Hi! I use sawtooth hangers for most signs and nail them to the sign at the top near the frame. I make sure to catch both the sign board and frame.👍🏻
Love your videos! What brand is your brad nailer?
Hi thank you! I have a porter cable brand and central pneumatic brand also. The both are great.
Where do you fine the pine frame boards? Loved this video!
Hi thank you so much! I usually get either furring strips from Lowe’s for the frames, or rip them out of pine 1x8s for a local lumber store.
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you so much!!!:):) I really appreciate it!
Is the white flat paint latex? What brand
Hi! I mostly use water based paints unless I paint for exterior purposes. This paint is water based..I usually seal with polycrylic. And I use mainly Valspar, Kilz, or Glidden paints...my favs.
Do you use chalk paint for the words and a makeup brush or foam brush?
How did you cut the frame ?
How much did everything cost to make ??
Can I ask what kind of vinyl do you use?
Yes I mainly use two kinds, Cricut brand and Oracal 631 (temporary) and Oracal 651 (permanent). I like temporary if you want a matte finish, permanent has limited colors available in matte, at least with Oracal.
What do you use on the back to hang up ???
Hi! I mostly use sawtooth hangers I get them in bulk packs from Amazon.👍🏻
Do you have a website to purchase from?
Hi! I will have an online shop fully up and running hopefully next month. I do have a small Etsy shop TheAppalachianHomeCo. I do take custom orders you can message me there if ever you are looking for something.
Can you please help? I can’t locate were the font Gybella is a free download. Can you please post were I can find it? Thanks
Hi. I searched and Gybella doesn’t seem to be available for free download anymore. Creative Market does have it for purchase with commercial license for only $6 right now tho!
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home thank you! I just purchased it.
What determines if you do a stencil or a decal??
Hi. I usually use stencils in I want a more rustic look or if I want the letters antique looking. The vinyl is crisp and clean and I use that for more modern and polished looking signs. Also if there is a color I can’t get in vinyl I will stencil!
What kind of vinyl do you use?
Hi. I use two brands all the time ....Cricut permanent glossy or removable matte, and also Oracal 631(removable) and 651 (permanent). Both are great vinyls.
Great job! I love this sign. Is the font available as a free download? TFS!
Thank you so much! I found this font on Creative Market, it used to be only $2, but I think the price has changed. I did check for free versions but haven't been able to find this exact font for free download. I do look for new fonts often and will post if I find any similar ones available for free.:)
Naw, that’s so nice of you, thank you!
Love your work. How can I place an order?
Thank you so much!! You can message me on Instagrm or on my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/TheAppalachianHomeCo.🙂
What size staples do you use for the back?
Hi! I use 9/16” in my manual staple gun, and 1-1/4” in the brad staple gun.👍🏻
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home thank you so much for the info & the reply!
