I got the answer thanks your calculations Mat. What you neglect to calculate is that Snivy is actually level 16 because it cannot learn Leaf Tornado at level 5. Meaning Ash's level 59 Pikachu was battling a level 16 Snivy. And here's the direct damage calculations: Lvl 59 0 Atk Pikachu Quick Attack vs. Lvl 16 0 HP / 252 Def Snivy: 41-49 (91.1 - 108.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO This means that Snivy will not be guaranteed okoed by a neutral nature pikachu using quick attack. As for the return hit Snivy does very low damage back. Lvl 16 0- Atk Snivy Tackle vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0 Def Pikachu: 2-3 (1.5 - 2.3%) Lvl 16 252+ SpA Snivy Leaf Tornado vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0- SpD Pikachu: 7-10 (5.4 - 7.8%) Which shows that the maximum damage Snivy could do was 10% back. However Ash's pikachu had been injured and could have not fully recovered, or rather not recovered at all from the encounter with Zekrom. Thus it is entirely possible that Pikachu just has 10% of it's hp or 20% if both of Snivy's attacks were crits and so he was defeated. Now it makes perfect sense. Thanks for watching 600+ episodes of pokemon.
I was wondering if a Lvl 5 Snivy could actually know Leaf Tornado, but now the question is: if the guy is a new trainer and just got that Snivy: why is it Lvl 16?
he specifically ignored using move names to calculate levels as move names are different due to japanese translations and there's a lot of inconsistency between the anime and game
Yeah, if you think about it, even in the first season, how many battles did pikachu actually have between gyms? Compare that to how many times you get popped in the game going between gyms from trainers and wild pokemon. And you only get experience when you win lol. Ash was getting badges after losing.
nah the last game I played, Y, I never used the rare candies. I was saving them for the later levels where the amount of exp needed is crazy. You can easily get to levels around 60 by just beating the game with normal grinding.
After re-watching this one year later I think I’ve realized that Matt didn’t put in perspective the power boost that Pikachu gets throughout the series as well an example of this would be when Brock’s father uses the electric water generator to power a Pikachu that had to of accounted for some extra levels
I mean those extra levels aren't able to be put numerically so i doubt they can be held accountable as a form of bonus levels which already was an overkill on snivy
*GAME* is my inspiration!! My mom said that if I got 20k LIKES on my new song!! She definitely buy me a professional mic!! *Begging you GUYS!!* Please...I LOVE YOU! I'M NOT LYING! PLS!!
Not only is it possible that Pikachu went into the fight with low HP, but also it's perfectly possible that the anime 'verse works with a slightly more realistic logic in terms of health, namely that Pikachu could have simply had a serious off day with an unusually competent Snivy.
I would follow this logic with if it was an off day and Pikachu knows he is way stronger then it's very probable that Pikachu held back and threw the fight because we have seen pike be very compassionate as counter to ashs competitive nature so I am gonna say pika simply threw the fight because it didn't wana actually hurt a baby compared to it. Like I used to go to pokemon card game tournaments and even took first place a few times but when I play against my 9 year old I hold super back and don't use any actual strategy. So she can learn and build confidence in desicion making. Pokemon constantly display that level intellect and compassion.
You're slightly correct about following real world logic just miss 2 points 1 that snivy knew leaf storm there is no way for a normal snivy to knew that 2 it has been explained multiple times that if the trainer got confused than so does the pokemon they were completely shocked why Pikachu is unable to use any electric attack and was not focused in battle
Theory: it never says that pikachu is at full health when they start fighting, so maybe Ash simply forgot to have him healed up and he was sitting at "low" hp...
Now the last task for this topic is to calculate Pikachu's level by the end of Ash's journey in the Pokémon Journeys episode "Rainbow & the Pokémon Master"

My head-canon was always that Ash was training Pikachu between battles. I don't think that Pikachu is lvl 100, but I think it's unlikely that his level is quite that low. The calculations do prove the minimum level it could be, though.
You might have accurately surmised Pikachus level, what you didnt account for Snivy having is something that is very crucial. Its the sole reason why it beat Pikachu, something that is often overlooked but its THE most powerful trait anyone could hope to obtain. Plot armor
Snivy could have had some kind of rare buffs like Pokérus had naturally ate a lot of calc/iron & other minerals where it was caught & possibly maybe endure or some other skill that either buffed def & or atk/spec, Pikachu could have been injured or sick/cursed as well before the fight, factor in a critical hit from an unexpected counter hit after the shock of a lv5 pokemon tanking a quick attack & even I would grow eyeballs 10 timers their size just to then see my lv60 Pikachu get KO'd, there is still alot in the Pokémon world world we don't know about. Battle field could factor in too maybe it was a botched quick atk where Pikachu got messed up by terrain & maybe some active nerf or buff field effects were active, OFF GAME LOGIC NO AWAY PIKACHU LOST BUT FLUKES/RNG HAPPEN. Or it was just lazy writing. & Plot Armor... Right definitely that, don't know why I'd even give the benefit of the doubt here it's Pokémon.
honestly the fact that Pikachu is sometimes even crushing other pokemons that are twice or more of his level explains very well why team rocket is so obsessed with him

The original question and answer still stand. At this point in the anime, if pikachu is still the same pikachu, and the adventure up to this point has not been reset, there is no possible way it should have lost that fight. Giving it more levels from off screen grinding would only make that statement more true. To add on to that, if the levels are consistent with the games levels, pika would be level 100, and likely able to solo carry Ash through basically every fight. Assuming it is level 100 (+), with volt tackle, iron tail, thunder shock, and quick attack.... it can probably spam quick attack through most fights and not be touched until several badges deep into each area. So, the rule of anime applies. Pika is being nerfed for the sake of the story.
@@Gamerboi99 a factor that never gets talked about. In the show pikachu does not respect ash in the start. Badges are required for pokémon to respect and obey
Can we all just have a moment of silence to appreciate the sheer amount of pain that Matt put himself through for this theory? Not just watching all of those episodes, movies, and specials, while *also* compiling data on each one; but for actually sitting through, and having to listen to The Pokémon Company's voice cast replacements for that many more episodes. Personally, I could barely make it through the new cast's debut in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, and lost interest in the anime solely due to the abysmal new cast, so huge kudos to Matt for sticking it out all the way to Unova. 👏🏻👏🏻 You, sir, are both a scholar, and a true champion.

@@zera3947 yeah even matpat said that even without the team rocket exp Pikachu would still only be lvl 59 so even little things like that wouldn’t matter Pikachu would still obliterate that Snivy no matter if it was lvl 5 or lvl 17

One thing I find funny about that Snivy battle, even though sure he shouldn't have lost, but one thing people frequently forget to mention is that Pikachu was established as being super sick that day before the battle which definitely contributed to his loss.
Personally I would have calculated any off-screen training by using the EXP Share formula, as it's basically a trainer's Pokemon sharing their experiences.
Unconclusive taking into account in the alola region ash did train... So considering he was using almost all his pokemon, we can say it grew a few levels, at least to level 65-70 on the other hand, there is a soft reboot in journeys, since we see younger ash and he does not seem to know a lot of things of places he has been, so it's pick your poison, but if we continue, Pikachu hasn't grown much
When I was a little girl watching the first season of Pokemon, by like the 40th episode, give or take a few, 4yo me was convinced that Pikachu is the brains of the team, and Ash only wins because Pikachu's the strategist. It grew into this complex theory that any of Ash's other pokemon that were disobedient at least one time *and* almost never outright fainted in battle could also be competent enough to figure out how to win/avoid damage in spite of Ash's persisting ignorance. Looking back on it today in my 20s, I'm starting to kind of agree with 4yo me. Rofl And to clarify, by no means was this all fleshed out, I was too young to consciously build evidence into a complicated conclusion, so it was more of a "feeling" or accepted understanding like accepting blue skies and black skies must mean day and night, that sort of thing.
Counter Theory: That Snivy might have been doing drugs to boost it's stats so even at level 5 it's stats are higher than it should be making it able to take on a level 61 Pikachu
There is a bit of wiggle room because of possible offscreen battles. Matpat acknowledges this at 2:30 when he says that he doesn’t battle very much, I’m guessing most of his tall grass encounters on route are cut out because of pacing. They decide to put all that to useless shenanigan episodes. Case in point: there is an episode during kanto I think where the trio helps out a guy with a camera (I forgot the plot of this episode, I just remember ash telling the camera kid he needs to get a new life when he says his camera is his life)he never shows up again to my knowledge. I’m guessing the writers cut down on the grass battles because constantly fighting would make it repetitive, kinda like grinding in the games
Possiblility A, ash has acess to the fountain of youth. B a year in the pokimon universe is significantly longer than IRL. C the anime writers dont give a flying duck if litteraly everything in their show is conterdicting itself. D ash is reincarnating and only inheriting some of his memories from past lives.
@@zssdfounder4607 C. One of my friend made a big blog post about how Pokemon anime statut quo was hurting the series for all viewers, new and old alike. Here is my very late take on how Pikachu lost against Snivy the first battle. What I think it is is how levels don't really matter in the anime. They exist sure, but they may not apply because obviously Pokemon learn moves that they wouldn't in game, like Pikachu learning Electro Web. The level could still be 5-61, but it probably wouldn't matter because in the end, Pikachu is a Pikachu. A weak statted Pokemon that has a base stat total of 320. Snivy's base stat total is 308. plus quick attack isnt stab, and stab DOES apply to the anime. I don't know for sure if low roles and high roles are in the anime, but if they are, quick attack would not do as much as killing Snivy in 3 different lives. And then to account for the possible high roles and crits for Snivy's tackle (I think its tackle) and stab Leaf Tornado, if I correctly put in the numbers, that would be just barely be enough to defeat Pikachu. Or it could just be a sympathy faint and Pikachu's acting has improved heavily
Nice thought, but Trip's Servine and Serperior loose some battles against Ash in the later part of BW, so it probably is somewhere around lv 50-ish instead
Honestly, though, it'd be interesting if he was accidentally getting swapped between extremely similar-looking parallel dimensions and the levels shift.

No??? Mime Jr can't evolve unless it knows mimic, that's why mat compared it to Aipom. Snivy doesn't need to know leaf tornado to evolve and also Mat already acknowledged that level up movesets aren't followed in the anime as pokemon can learn moves they don't in the games..
@@reio1951 It's not about snivy evolving. It's about the level at which a snivy learns the move. You can't even argue this particular snivy had leaf tornado as an egg move, because Leaf tornado isn't an egg move for Snivy. It should be at level 16 minimum to know the move leaf tornado.
@@reio1951 "he is level 16, the level before evolving into Servine." Not the level he DOES evolve, the level BEFORE. It says nothing about it having to be Servine to know the move, just that it has to be level 16, the level before evolving, to know the move.

After re-watching this one year later I think I’ve realized that Matt didn’t put in perspective the power boost that Pikachu gets throughout the series as well an example of this would be when Brock’s father uses the electric water generator to power a Pikachu that had to of accounted for some extra levels
And if pikachu kept going until present day then he would of fought legendarys aswell
I mean those extra levels aren't able to be put numerically so i doubt they can be held accountable as a form of bonus levels which already was an overkill on snivy

Not only is it possible that Pikachu went into the fight with low HP, but also it's perfectly possible that the anime 'verse works with a slightly more realistic logic in terms of health, namely that Pikachu could have simply had a serious off day with an unusually competent Snivy.
but didn't pikachu attacked first? So even his normal atk damage should have one shot a lvl 5 pokemon

Based on how Ash's other Pokémon evolve, there must be substantial off screen grinding going on. That kinda throws a wrench in this whole thing.

It’s clearly a level 98 Snivy he fought
The extra two levels are for if it ever wants to evolve later
Nice thought, but Trip's Servine and Serperior loose some battles against Ash in the later part of BW, so it probably is somewhere around lv 50-ish instead
It actually did evolve and lost to ash in the league.

Honestly, though, it'd be interesting if he was accidentally getting swapped between extremely similar-looking parallel dimensions and the levels shift.
There's people who actually believe that Ash catches a new pikachu and brainwashes it to make it believe they've been together for years lmaooooo(Oh, and kills the previous one too xd)
@@kuroser353 Haven't heard this onbe before. LOL maybe he does it to relive his first region experience like some kind of dsperate junkie looking to recreate that first high
Makes sense. In October, they put out mystery gifts for Ash-hat Pikachus with the trainer ID of "Ash." Also all 8 of them were owned by Ash, so he apparently has 8 partner Pikachus. *FROM EVERY REGION!*
Technically I would say that the level 60ish is his minimum level because there's almost definitely some XP farming off screen.
This is all about the *onscreen* battles, but yeah, that's a minimum.
What level would he have in three more regions? (Start of Journeys)
@@joshuarobinson8529 Probably level 80-90 since he gained 30 in just Kanto then growed slowly later on. Even in regions with a lot of activity he only got like 10 levels.
@@UltraAryan10 I would say 70-80.
Pikachu was just high when he fought snivy.. snivy used that devil’s lettuce and it was super effective
Where can I get some of that!

My 10 year old daughter just asked something very important: "Do the Team Rocket Gadgets and Machinery give EXP?"
i thought the same, but since in the games you can break rocks and trees without them giving you exp, I dont think it would happen in the anime either
@@arielfontecilla5562 but the rocks and tress aren't attacking you in the games. Team rockets machines DO.
Excellent Question, I don't know.
The movie fights in Black 2 and White 2 don't give any experience points. I'd think the same would apply to Team Rocket's gizmos.
It depends on which kind
Actually Snivy using Left Storm signifies he is level 16, the level before evolving into Servine; just following the logic you used for Mime Jr. Though, level 16 still wouldn't stand a chance.
@@petiepablo it is about Snivy evolving because the original comments point was literally that Snivy would have to be Servine to know leaf tornado.
@@reio1951 "he is level 16, the level before evolving into Servine." Not the level he DOES evolve, the level BEFORE. It says nothing about it having to be Servine to know the move, just that it has to be level 16, the level before evolving, to know the move.
I mean, there is a small chance it survives, and pikachu was hit by a legendary pokemon beforehand, so it could maybe win
It's three years later, but watching this episode is amazing. This must be the most crazy research this channel has made to date!
But now I want to know what Pikachu's level would be in the current season, over 400 episodes after Sinnoh. xD
"Is it a water type?"
Nope, he's an idiot. But that's just a theory.
Ash being an idiot is a theory? 😂
It is a theory to ash
It is a self-proven theory, we all know he is an idiot. (but hey, at least he does not put billions of pokemon in agony just to grind for levels, unlike me [I am learning to make a Macro just so I can do that on my DS while I am busy doing other things])
No...that's a fact
It's the same way that evolution is just a theory. A PROVEN THEORY
Nope
Does Pikachu's exp account for "switch trainging" exp whenever ash decides to switch out a Pokémon to defeat an enemy?
Was about to mention this lol, if he looks through the comments and sees this he might go bonkers because it doesnt seem that he did count switch battles
He only counted fights that Pikachu got the knockout
"How Strong is Pikachu?" As strong as the anime calls for him to be, because f***ing anime.
I love your vids man it sucks your leaving I’m rewatching all you vids as a tribute
Imagine if team rocket just brought a gun with them. Series would be a lot shorter
LOL
They have a banned episode because a character kept pointing, and shooting his gun, and threatens to shoot ash.....
Or a ROCKET launcher
There was a Japan-only episode where they did
