We've talked before about the science behind Fire Pokemon. Today I am turning my Theorist eye towards a different type - Electric! Throughout the series we see Pikachu zap Ash and many others with its attacks. It got me wondering - how powerful is Pikachu? Or any Electric type? Well, when you look at the science, the answer may SHOCK you!

“Why Pikachu is terrible”
Me, a hardcore Pokémon fan: *oh buddy, you didn’t need to make a video to prove that*
Exact Same Thought Possess
I feel like using it in battle with anything past the 3rd gym or any wifi battle will prove it
Exactly
Not even Raichu either, Jolteon, Ampharos, vikavolt. All of them are more viable (at least in the normal game)
Jabril Smith yea no, electric types arent really that viable in competitive, besides zekrom and zapdos, but zekroms banned soooo, and zapdos isnt that good anymore, still OU though
Well that explains why Pichu shocks itself. Also, it explains how Ash and team rocket can survive so many electric shocks.
it's BIG BRAIN time--
Then every electric Pokémon should electrocute itself
@@venami6863 its an anime/cartoon for kids
Not really tho, because ash is holding pickachu when he gets shocked on occasion
@@jameshanley3947 That's true. Although, he's still survives that so I'm guessing Pikachu was holding back when shocking him even back in his rebellious stage.
Mildly sorta fun fact: the move "Thunderbolt" in Japanese is "10万ボルト" which literally translates to "100,000 volts"
yeah in cantonese it applies to pikachu too
Does this mean Japanese doesn't have a word for 100,000 and they're basically saying 10 10,000?
I remember watching a video of a Japanese school student trying to count (in English), and he called 20 "ten ten", and every so often the video would cut back to him, showing larger numbers. When the numbers got to like 100 or higher, at one point he takes a deep breath and goes "ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten!"
@@ShizuruNakatsu 20 in Japanese is 2 10, not 10 10
@@rax1899 I never said anything about what it was in Japanese? I said it was a Japanese student speaking English. He just used tens for every multiple of ten (ten ten for 20, ten ten ten for 30) and when it went back to him later, there was a really long number, so he took a breath and went "ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten ten!" while everyone else was giggling about it.
@@ShizuruNakatsu oh I read it wrong mb mb
Mat you forgot real live animals like eels uses electricity to protect themselves. Though eels and some animals (have a certain defense) is/coat themselves with mucus to prevent to electrocute themselves; I believe electric/lighting type Pokemon would have (evolved) have something similar so it doesn't shock itself.
Fr fr
Yeah, but electric ell live in water, and most of his body are made with that electric cell(i forgot)
So unless pikachu body is made of 80 percent electric cell,NO
My chemistry teacher: spends the whole semester explaining how electricity works
Matpat: explains it in less that 20 minutes
ZoeTheUnicorn Queen that’s how school is
Plus being cool doing it
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: the world's education system in a nutshell.
For defence, use the "I knew that but we studied a bit of electricity in chemistry" card.
But there you also get thought about circuits and resistance etc. right?
Game Theory: Pikachu is trash.
Team Rocket: Pikachu is god type pokemon.
i like that joke nice one :)
Haha
1 specific Pikachu....
Zeus type
Pikachu is obviously great because plot armor lol
what's really fascinating about this science is that it means that Kaminari from My Hero Academia actually mostly gets the electricity/lightning physics correct
wait but where is the negative charge
his hands?
As an electrical technician i can say: you got a lot wrong here.
First the human skin has a resistance of 1000 ohms. Also if the cheeks of pikachu where negatively charged, then so would be the whole Pikachu. Also you don't know if the Pikachu itself may be an insulator and only the cheeks are a conductor. But the main thing you got wrong, is about how lightnings work. It's true that a voltage of 30000 volts per centimeter is needed to overcome the resistance of air, but once it's ionized, the resistance drops massively. Going by your logic, lightnings would be harmless
My brain can’t keep up
I'm glad someone said this!
how much energy would it take to Ionize the air plus do an attack? Would it still be Scientifically reasonable?
@@rlavender9684 by ionizing the air you are already doing a huge attack, killing everything that lives pretty much instantly. As he said about 30000 Volts per centimeter.
I'd also like to think that as an electric Pokemon charges up its next attack, it is effectively ionizing a route in the air between it and it's opponent. Using extra "hidden" energy to charge up the distance between it and its target, like an invisible radioactive beam. Then when it has charged up enough, it releases the electricity and then the sparks do the rest. This is why I also believe the electricity can curve and/or strike multiple opponents at once.

This show never gets old, neither does matpats dry humor

Hot wings
@@phoenixgaming-plakadrakes6235 pre-jinx looks like Mr. Popos wife

Alright guys nvm I did end up liking this comment cuz the number was after 69 :(
So basically, an electric move like “Thunder Fang” would realistically be more effective than a move like “Thunder Bolt.” Interesting.
Yes that's the same thought that I had, and the next one after that would be thunder punch
And after that voltage tackle
So basically in order to be realistic, Thunder Type physical moves should do way more damage than special moves and Thunder Type physical moves should be more common too, and all of them should cause recoil although the physical ones with more than 70 power should probably cause guaranteed paralysis.
Interesting. You'd have a "polarizing" type whose moves are100% either god tier or straight garbage.
@@Kurayamiblack So... Pichu in Smash is actually the most accurate depiction of what Matpat describes the Electric type as being like.
Surprising he didn't study the real life electric Pokémon: Electric eels. They get up to 860V and 1A.
Maybe as the cheeks negatively charge, Pikachu's body does charges negatively aswell but the cheeks charge more.
To me this would result in a Pikachu that is negatively charged but can still concentrate energy in his cheeks.
Ah yes, I actually liked those hot wings.
Pokémon that know thunder fang: I am four parallel universes ahead of you
What about Thunder?
best move would be if they slapped the tail
Or Thunder Punch or Plasma Fists
Probably just thunder fang because it gets to your inside directly and he even says it in the video (not the name but about biting)
@@krishgupta1128 I didn't mean that. It doesn't have anything to do with naming. I said Thunder Punch or Plasma Fists because thunder punch and plasma fists are contact moves so the electricity actually hits.
Conclusion: Volt Tackle being Pikachu's strongest move makes sense, because he actually makes contact.
And if he used electricity when doing the metal tail move I would be even stronger
@@pochiluis0570 bruh no because that would hurt himself
@@pochiluis0570*iron tail
wild charge too, electroweb aswell ig
This channel has taught me so much about and help keep me thinking through everything.
So, if we reverse this and say that electric Pokémon have to be doing *some* kind of effective attack (since they do actually KO other Pokémon), could it be that we have the mechanics of their power wrong? Maybe the power isn’t to “shoot lightning,” but to ionize air? So, the power is the ability to reduce the resistance of air to nothing, and thus allow them to turn what should be minor shocks into major weapons?

“Electric types are basically useless”
Thunder punch: Am I a joke to you?
Don't forget Thunder Fang and Volt Tackle! (And almost all other physical based electric moves.)
Having only melee range attacks as a pokemon thats not really a heavy type or at least suit for boxing/whatever because or their, well, body, length of arms, shape of legs etc makes them basically useless unless you throw them st another pokemon with no range attacks so they can maybe shock while taking a bone cracking punch to the face. Otherwise theyre at a disadvantage when it comes to defending against ranged attacks if they cant fly or move quickly enough for dodging to be easy and the length of their arms to catch the other pokemon with not matter
Yes, yes you are
*laughs in Electivire*
Yes
What if their fur insulates them against shocking themselves? And what if part of charging their little cheek batteries ionizes a sphere around them or come in front of them. It might also be worth noting that often in the anime anyways electrical attacks are often seen starting at a point and moving across the ground to the opponent. But that’s just a theory, a GAME theory!
I know this is an old video and it's in Game Theory but MatPat should really watch A Certain Scientific Railgun and then explain Misaka Mikoto's powers

I do certainly agree with your statement.
You should think into it more. You never know if Pikachu starts the charge at his cheeks and the negative energy spreads to the rest of him. One major fact is that in one of the pokemon shows, electricity surrounds Pikachu with signals that Pikachu ionizes the air around him before shooting the electricity
Well, we don't know how the molecule works in the Pokemon universe. What if the resistance of air is much less in Pokemon world than our own or a Pokemon's electricity is something else. It might not be our normal electricity.
Minecraft theory: I have a theory about the blazes. Wither skeletons are made of carbon as they drop coal on death. They most likely were fossilized in soul sand and netherrack and eventually gained the properties that allow netherrack to burn forever. Then some of them got hit by a ghast and they lit on fire as well as gaining the ghasts’ ability to fly and shoot fireballs becoming blazes. due to the fact that they were made of fossilized coal and netherrack they burn forever and can shoot weak fireballs at targets. They also live in the nether fortresses because they used to be the ancient builders.
Edit:The spawners could be a result of the builders experiments with life and death. After blazes lived in the fortresses for a while their essence went into the spawners and they started appearing from them.
Edit 2: magma cubes could be slimes brought into the nether.
Jackmaster well they could be connected to pigmen which could be the builders

Sans is Ness only offended weak people. The fact is either you thought it was really cool or dumb, but only weak people insulted Matt for making it. They might make jokes with their friends but they wouldn't be highly triggered. This is actually another stupid pokemon episode where Matt applies real science to a show about magically fictional creatures.(which I get is a thing he does, but it doesn't make it less stupid the theory is directly not canon and can be rejected on the plot of the games and anime alone.) The differnce is I think it's stupid, but I don't think Matt is stupid for making it. I think it's a waste of time, but if it gets him views and new subs then it was probably worth it for him.

Plot twist: it’s just an anime and my childhood continues to be ruined by game theory.
You can indeed direct where a lightning strike goes, and we do it for research and even the U.S. Military has tested lightning-based weapons like the MARAUDER plasma railgun.
The main way is to use a rocket trailing a wire. As the rocket flies up, the wire provides a channel of least resistance for the lightning to strike. Its pretty cool, and the process vaporizes the wire creating a giant green line of plasma.
The other way to direct a strike is to ionize a channel of air. Fire can ionize pockets of air, but the military tested high-power Lasers to ionize a channel of air to guide lightning. A literal Lightning Beam!
So in the case of Pokemon, perhaps electric type pokemon can ionize channels of air to guide their lightning strikes, or fire out extended whiskers that act like wires.

The visible part is just the byproduct of the exchange.
