    I'm very interested in this! I'm currently researching how to mate a T56 to my 1st Gen Toyota Tundra v8 (2UZFE 4.7L engine). I bought it with a bad transmission, i.e.; a disintegrated overdrive planetary gear because the torrington needle bearing which sits inbetween it and the ring gear is inadequate and is well known to fail. It's a huge issue that was never a recall. It's exacerbated by towing, especially in overdrive, but I've read a lot of forum threads where people have blown theirs under 100k miles and never towed anything! I had already wanted to do a manual swap as I've never been into automatics and this issue sealed it for me. I just need to figure out a bell-housing or adapter plate. Any help is appreciated. I really like the T56.

  • @madkidd00000007
    @madkidd00000007 2 роки тому

    For anyone reading comments. The easy way is to get a gto trans and use the C6 adapter on the rear. It’s a direct swap and you have a normal “LS1” style bellhousing.

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  2 роки тому

      Yeah that would certainly work. The shifter would need extra work at that point, so I'm not sure, cutting and drilling the hardened steel shift shaft inside the transmissions and buying the McLeod shift socket and custom shifter might be a less favorable path for some.
      I wouldn't bat an eye at doing the aforementioned work, but it just seemed easier and cheaper, so long as I don't feel the need to get the shorter bellhousing and input shaft, but at the price I got this trans, I'd still be ahead should I forge down that path. They all have their advantages. When I bought my trans, if you could find a GTO trans it was twice the price of all of the CTS-V transmissions. People must not like the flange the CTS-V comes with. There is alot more that will fit together on the T56 platform than won't and it's useful to know the configurations and what you require and what you don't.
      This trans needed a mainshaft anyway due to wear on the 5/6 gear press diameter. If you get a used T56 it's not unlikely you'd be in the same boat.
      Knowledge is power 👊

      @@dieslowlymf oh don’t worry that wasn’t too difficult on the shifter. With no tail housing on it I filled the shifter area with towels and used a cut off wheel. Then used the existing hole in the shift rod to put the new lug on. From what I’ve read it’s surface treated which I believe because it wasn’t too hard to cut. Then the shifter is a steeda unit with the bolt holes elongated as they are the correct width but 3/8” too close together front to back. I was lucky enough to have a c6 trans laying around when I came across a good deal on the GTO unit

      The tailhousing I am using is a 12455042. At some point there was a tailhousing with the small C5 style bolt pattern that used a gasket with a different part number; 89059568. My assumption is that this tailhousing is identical except the mounting face of it is milled down the thickness of the compressed gasket. The gasket should be part number 89059570 if you end up going with that one.

    So what do you think of using the LOJ conversion method that involves using a camaro tr6060 with a c6 tail housing and an 07-08 vette shaft with your custom adapter plate? I think the LOJ adapter would make it a bit longer and its too expensive, which is why id rather use your adapter.

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  2 роки тому +4

      When I started planning for this, I wasn't aware of the LOJ adapter, so it wasn't a known option to me. I am an enthusiast, just like everyone watching this video. I was just trying to find a solution to basically make my rare manual awd wagon haul my motorcycles. Turns out getting a Chevy S10 and making a custom plate is the next best thing.
      I'm not interested in comparing and contrasting the LOJ adapter beyond this: there is no way I could use it in my application without cutting out a major frame member due to the length of it. You also have to dig into the transmission on both the LOJ and the route I pursued. Everyone should decide for themselves which route they want to take, some routes make better sense for your situation but the t56 is long enough, it would seem like a hard sell to make it like 6" longer. This setup is about 2" longer than the nv3500 it's replacing.

    I know the capabilities of the tremec. I don’t have any experience with any of the transfer cases that could work with this swap. Obviously a smaller size is needed. But I don’t want grenade the transfer case. Mostly used at slower speeds off road. Also does the bell housing have clearance or does it need to be modified. Thanks for the help

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому +1

      I have seen people with 700AWHP on street break front diffs before they break the BW4472. Regarding the transfer case options, I'll list them out on the next video but this adapter takes the 4 bolt transfer case adapter pattern shared by the 4l60 and the 4l80 with the newer 6 bolt transfer case adapter to transmission mounting to come in the future this should make pretty much every GM transfer case attached to the end of a transmission an option. I'm not sure what you mean by the bellhousing question. If you are talking about the front driveshaft clearing the transmission bellhousing, there is an engine in front of the bellhousing you'd have to clear before the bellhousing is the issue.

      I know this is an old video... but the stock TBSS/Saab 9-7 Aero transfer case is a NP/NV 120 that has the Torsen T3 center diff, which is the only way to get real AWD into any GM platform. They are damn near bullet proof and I am pretty sure that none have ever been reported as destroyed by power. Guys are running 9s with the stock transfer case. Bully Racing makes a LSD front diff that is cryo treated... they kinda specialize in Syclones and Typhoons, but the front diff in them is the same as the GMT360 platform so they are a direct fit.

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому

      I'm not super familiar with the specifics of the transmissions Tremec releases directly, but the magnum xl (kinda funny how Tremec decided to name their aftermarket line in lockstep with a certain prophylactic brand owned by Church & Dwight, but that's another conversation) but their literature indicates all other shift provisions have been removed, so if the shift shaft configuration was similar to the other transmissions, I'm guessing, totally guessing here since Tremec does not list parts diagrams and replacement parts online, that at minimum, you'd have to cut and drill the shift shaft to accept a shifter offset cup like the cts-v t56 one to use the forward position required when swapping the tailhousing in order to use the simple adapter plate.
      Next, again, guessing here due to the aforementioned lack of my ability to see inside the Magnum XL without tearing I've apart, my guess is that you'd end up using the Corvette tailhousing that has the bearing cup for the single piece cluster gear, which I think is only available on the wide bolt pattern, later tailhousing.
      I have an adapter for that designed and it will be the next one I produce, so given the trans can be configured for the Corvette tailhousing, yes an adapter would bolt those two together, just gotta get the transfer case extension/adapter selection right at that point.

      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому

      For adapting a LT230 to the T56, I would think the best bet would be using the SSR 32 Spline Mainshaft (GM P/N: 89059965, Tremec P/N: TUFP5211), with an adapter plate (I should be able to make one for this application) that goes between the T56 and the RW-ENG LT230 adapter module: rw-eng.com/products/adapter
      You'd likely still have to cut some off the 32 Spline Mainshaft (allowing a shorter assembly) but it should work fine.
      Best T56 to start out with would be a Corvette (with midplate conversion), GTO, CTS-V, or SSR if you can find one.
      Keep in mind shifter position is a little forward for most vehicles, but something like the S1 H-Track shifter should allow most to move it back into a comfortable spot.

      I'm on gen 2 of the plates now and it has grown a little in size. My numbers before were in the 3-400 range but i'm expecting an increase given the size increase and the sharp inflation in the materials and manufacturing sectors. Will release another video on the 2nd generation plate when I get quotes back

    Wanting to do this to my 2000 sierra 4wd, is the t56 capable of switching between 2wd and 4wd or will it have to be AWD at all times even if I use the 4l60 from the truck

  • @JAY-rm7ly

    so is it 4wd or awd

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому

      Depends on the transfer case of your choice. This transfer case, the BW4472 is AWD, but if I were to bolt up the NP231 that I have, it would be 4WD.

    • @JAY-rm7ly
      @JAY-rm7ly 3 роки тому

      @@dieslowlymf so if i used a transfercase like a NP231 the 4wd would work with the T60 and the 4wd components that are already on the truck

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому

      @@JAY-rm7ly yep, driveshaft length, front and rear might have to change but everything already on the truck would work the same.

    Would the stock manual shifter stick work or do you need to mess with your shifter stick?

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому

      While I cant be sure of which stock vehicle you have in question, and the answer right now is almost certainly no, owing to the fact that this conversion makes use of the mid shift location, which is not used in any OEM application of the T56 or Tr6060. This leads me to think...While the mid shift location is the only option with this conversion, with the CTS-V setup, I may actually be able to make a pivoting mount using the CTS-V setup again, with shifter position customizable per application.

      Oh shoot I'm sorry. Would the shifter be farther back than say a NV4500?

    • @dieslowlymf
      @dieslowlymf  3 роки тому

      @@DittoBlast I would actually think this would be pretty similar. I think the shifter is going to land in the hole already in my truck for the NV3500 and I think the trucks that come with both the NV3500 and NV4500 have the shifter come out in the same location.
