Wonderful to watch you work, Jackie. Very soothing. Stay safe, and my thought to all in California, specially to the victims of such horrendous catastrphe.
Oh my goodness, Etta - some days in the studio could be an entire TV show of bloopers and mistakes. But the truth is, I learn so much more from my mistakes, and I enjoy sharing what I learn. 🥰
Jackie, you are my go to inspirational artist on YT, your humour is infectious and love your "jackieisums"😅. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the fires in LA, stay safe x
Thank you Jackie; I'm doing a sketchbook course right now and we have to do a collage so this is so timely for me. I'm much more confident now having watched this. ❤
Lovely to see your smile again, Jackie.😊 Just out of hospital and you always inspire me to be positive. I can see where you are going, and your choices seem to fit, so well.....especially the shell bit at the top. You are a painted paper puzzle visionary.....what a mouthful! Jo.❤
Jackie, hope you're safe from the fires in California. I love your work and creativity. Like you said "not hemmed in" creativity- I love and am attuned with that practice.
Started my first painted paper painting collage. I love it. A beautiful easy space between my stained glass mosaic and painting. Thank you for inspiring me to take the leap. I feel like my inner child is getting way more room. You are a blessing to me. Thank you!❤️
Jemma, this is amazing! As I was working on this piece I was thinking how fun it might be to do a 'mosaic collage' with the painted papers. I've never worked with mosaic and truthfully don't know where to start, but I think I will try it (with paper) some time soon. I'd love any suggestions you might have. Also, I love that your inner child is getting more space 🥰
Thanks for the shout out on the tip about tearing up papers. I did posters for a local Oyster Fest festival for two years. I know how challenging that subject is.
Listening as you were in the creative process was a powerful lesson. Love the tip someone shared about tearing the paper to avoid falling in love with it. Im a dancer. And sn artist. In dance one skill takes hours, muscle, intention, sometime years to accomplish.... you cant hang it on a wall. It has to flow into the final choreographed picture thst moves in time. Watching today was like watching a choreographer move her dancers to create the impact of the story.
Oh my! Jackie! I dearly admire you and your present artwork I´m afraid, that I am not patient enough to dive into such a puzzle - and hearing, that you re going to work on a giant oyster ... I don´ t have words. I hope you will have good times to go on and please, God, let the firefighters be able to stop that giant fire. Be blessed my dear. XO Britta
Jackie - great video as usual! Honestly, watching your channel is always so calming and soothing. Not to mention that whenever I tune in, I learn something new which I love! When I’m having a block or I feel unmotivated to get in my studio, I know I can watch your videos and by the end something in your video will have sparked an idea or empowered me to push through the creative slump by just doing SOMETHING. It works every time. Thanks again and I can’t wait to see the large piece you’re preparing for!
If I remember right, you mentioned you are in Southern California. I am sending out to you and everyone in general, from my soul my deep empathy and positive energy for everyone to find their paths out of this life changing event.
You comment was awesome… things in California sounds horrific. Your kindness in thoughts are more than kind. So happy you have art to give your brain space! ty
When you put the dark brown shadows under the edges of the shell, the contrast will pop the colors you have now. I like the addition of pumped up surprise colors. As long as the value us right, they work well.
Oh so much concentration! Love how its coming together though. When you switch to the 6' oyster (sounds like a movie - oyster eats LA) will you be using bigger pieces?
Thanks much for sharing this exciting project's process. It's spellbinding to watch this, Jackie. It's snowed here, and it's a gray silent day but for the taps and dribbling sounds of the melting ice. So, there's this perfect backdrop! ❄🌧I have experimented with collage, but never watched someone as they worked through it. You are such a great teacher and so generous to let us inside your own thoughts, it's awesome to be a witness to your work. One thought occurred to me as you were discussing depth and values, have you tried to do your first layer in grays, blacks, whites to build up from underneath the depth and shadows for the values especially? I've never even considered creating papers in gray tones for that purpose. 🙂
I discovered your videos a few days ago and I appreciate them a lot. I was in a down period of my creativity and you woke me up 😅 so many thanks for that! I'd like to know what is exactly the medical exam paper you use and where I could have a chance to find it in France?
Welcome, Sophie! I'm so happy you found my videos 😍 The specific medical exam paper I use may not be available in France, but I'm giving you the link to the paper on US Amazon, so you can use that to help you look for it. Be sure to try to get the "crepe" style paper if you can 🥰 amzn.to/3vnBstG
This video in particular is such an inspiration and a phenmonal education! Thank you! I have 2 questions if you have time: (1) I was told early in my hobby collage adventure that using Matte medium in multiple layers (or coats) will make the colors of the collage dulled (because of what is added to the acrylic medium to make it matte). It was suggested to use Gloss medium when gluing all the pieces of collage and then add a final coat of Matte Medium for the overall matte look. Has this been your experience? (2) I LOVE tearing paper - so satisfying! I know that tearing the paper in a certain way can cause or not cause a white (paper core) edge. Do you concern yourself with that when painting with paper? Thank you again for this video (and all of your videos)! You are a great instructor and demonstrator with perfect camera angles. Watching your videos is such a joy!
Hi Robin, it's nice to see you again! A1: Yes, with enough layers of matte medium you could dull down the colors. Using gloss medium for everything except the top layer is always and option, but I'll tell you why I didn't use do that here. I didn't want to highlight the edges of some of the papers I used, and on the thicker pieces, gloss medium as the 'build up' medium would do that. Even with matte on top, the gloss below would show the edges. However, if I were using a lot of really large, dark pieces in the collage, I would probably use gloss. A2: Great question - I do concern myself with it. I always try to tear in a direction or way that reduces the white edge. It doesn't always happen, so I go back and try again, or pinch out the white. The pinching process is tedious for me, so I try to get a 'clean' tear the first time. 🥰
Curious as to your best practices for cleaning your application brush after using matte medium. Sometimes my brushes come clean…and sometimes I think they’re clean & they dry hard as a rock. Thank you.
Great question, Linda! I did an entire video on how I clean all the different tools in my studio which you can find here ua-cam.com/video/5N50vN657RQ/v-deo.html , but the short answer is Murphy's Oil Soap (even for your rock hard brushes 😃). 🥰
For the curiosity and the challenge of working on something (somewhat) representational, that large. Prior to this UA-cam channel, most of the pieces I worked on were large - not 6', but large. Since my camera setup really only allows me to work on smaller pieces, I'm looking forward to having another project that forces me to think differently. 🥰
Hi Carol! The spray gets the paper wet so it's easy to position on the page as well as reduces the buckleing between the pieces and the page. Does that answer your question? 🥰

Hi Michelle! I love happy coincidences like that 🥰
Sending calming vibes Jackie ... hope the fires come under control soon as the havoc they reap is beyond words. ❤❤

Hi Becky - thank you, we are safe and I appreciate you asking. Love that you're not hemmed in - it's important! 🥰
It was so refreshing to see your thought process as you created this piece. You amaze me!

Avenelle - I am so sorry that I forgot it was you, but gosh that was a great tip! And yes, oysters can be challenging!
Always fun to see you working on these❣️ Now I’m craving marinated oysters. 😍👍
Yum! Thanks Rozani! 🥰
You’re most welcome. 😀💓
Really live love the vibrant colors!
Thank you, Lida!
I’m a tearing artist as well! I feel it blends so much better! Thank you always for your inspiration!!! ❤
I agree 100%, Kath! I can usually blend a tear, but lord help me with cut papers 😂🥰

Brea, thank you very much for such kind words, it means so much to me that they help when your not feeling the creativity. 🥰
Just got some rolls of the medical paper..excited to glelli print. Watching your process is very helpful.
I am so excited for you, Pam - I think you'll love using it!
If I remember right, you mentioned you are in Southern California. I am sending out to you and everyone in general, from my soul my deep empathy and positive energy for everyone to find their paths out of this life changing event.
Thank you, KJ. Your thoughts and positive energy are welcomed. We are ok where I am, but the tragedy is just too much to wrap my brain around. 🥰
5:33 Happy new year Jackie! I remember the video of you creating this beautiful paper. Excited to see where this goes. 😍
Love the result! So many luscious layers adding so much depth. Oh, and I love the word ‘collagey’ 😍
So great to see you, Trina! Happy New Year to you as well. 🥰
I love making up words 😂
Seeing you and hearing you talk about starting highlights early really stuck with me, because that’s something I struggle with doing.
Hi RevChristina! I find that if I don't start them early they don't look quite right later. 🥰
You comment was awesome… things in California sounds horrific. Your kindness in thoughts are more than kind. So happy you have art to give your brain space! ty
Thank you very much, Terri. 🥰

@@PaintedPaperStudio - I would love to hear about that! 🙂
Amazing! Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks with us.
Thank you, Karen - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, regarding the decision making, we are considering size, shapes, color, value, pattern, translucency and layering all at once.
It's complex, and delightful at the same time. 🥰

Hi Carol! The spray gets the paper wet so it's easy to position on the page as well as reduces the buckleing between the pieces and the page. Does that answer your question? 🥰
Will you work on both sides of your pages?
Hi Carol, do you mean the back sides of both pages? If so, yes, at some point I will work on the backsides. 🥰
