Many years ago, my husband and I went to see an artist exhibition at The Modern in Fort Worth. The artist had narrative pieces with silhouettes, shadow puppetry, and collage. All pieces surrounded a theme, but the diversity worked. Whether the collection revolves around a theme or showcases your current body of work, audiences appreciate artists who are versatile and diverse in their work.
I paint or collage or both every day now that I am semi retired. Today's prompt is to revisit a favorite painting, which I decided to turn into one new painting with one favorite element from each of my 3 favorite paintings (stone wall, blue door, folk art style flowers). It's going to take me several days or more 🙂 Thank you for sharing your work and your positivity!
I so relate that you have taken extended time to do the project. I’ve never done one of these challenges, but your perseverance to the cause and your acceptance of your imperfection in completing, it inspires me to try it.
Thank you, Etta ❤️❤️❤️ Try it! It’s fun to see what everyone else is doing for their projects while we all work together for the 100 days (or the 330-something days that I’m doing 😆😆😆)
Sunday lunch with Jackie! Favorite lunch of the week. I suggest you include your collages in the show. It’s not as easy as it first looks and yours are wonderful. I learn from you all the time.
grateful for yr consistent randomness... such a gift to flow w/creative flux beyond time constraints, & experience completion... and... you make it fun every which way... too cool.
LOL! Your collages scream Jackie as much as your paintings! Even though fluorescent red, celadon, and B/W stripes don’t necessarily dominate. Love em all
I completed the 100 Day Project last year for the first time and it really made an impact. You can really experience changes and growth in your vision and skills. Can't wait to start the 2025 hundred day project in February. I am going to focus on small mixed media landscape collages this year using my own papers and old book text.
I started the 100 day project, doing a small collage; 7" square. I didn't manage every day but I didn't beat myself up. I have continued since then. Again, if I forget, if life is too busy I don't beat myself up. I do limit my pieces of paper but I do also replenish every now and again to keep it fresh. Most of my collages are simple but every now and again when I look back on them there is one that is really wonderful. Definitely show your paints and collages together; it is who you are as an artist.
Thank you, Michelle ❤️ I'm so glad you were kind to yourself in the process - life definitely intervenes ❤️ Looking back through the collages is fun - I often re-discover things that I had previously forgotten about! Does that happen to you too?
All of our works are self portraits. You definitely have a style and voice, and your collages carry the same whimsy (and weight) as your paintings. And as someone who has paper hoarding tendencies, I'm going to try the 100 day project this year. I'm actually taking a break from making 40 or 50 collage papers just now. I think I'll shift gears and work on the wee sweater I'm knitting for my great neice.
To include or to exclude - the dilemma = either because there is no better or worse way. If show organizer decides, then done; if you decide, then your perspective is kingpin.
Good points, Chuck! The decision is mine so I get to make the call - I'll likely make the decision closer to show time, once I see how the collection is shaping up by then ❤️
Definitely inspired this year to try the 100 day project! I have my stack of 100 pieces of watercolor paper to use and will be combining collage and mark-making! Thank you for the constant encouragement and grace to do what we can do!🎉❤😘Looking VERY forward to it as both a learning experience and a fun way to explore!
Life Jackie life gets in our way! I have done a 100 project using old business cards as my substrate. Fun and I find myself going back to it and adding by 10s. I had to pack up a kit from the studio to bring inside bc it is way too cold to try and heat my studio. I sorta had a different kind of play yesterday and enjoyed it. My goal is not number of pieces but number of times per week I paint or play etc.
You’re so right ❤️ I love the business card art idea - limiting the size of the art helps keep things achievable for sure. The 4”x6” size of these collages most definitely helped be keep things quick for me. Perhaps I’ll go even smaller in 2025! 😆
Absolutely include collages with paintings! They're all expressions of you, and you are visible in every piece of art that you create! PS, I spent the last10 days harvesting magazine images for my collage work. Been tons of fun and lots of ideas sparked. I'm definitely doing the100 day project this year.
So inspiring! Love the keeping the options small . I hope your son is feeling better. I bet he’s creative too. I’ve been working on the gel plate. I try to do a quick sit down but I get obsessed with the randomness.
Good for you for having 7 left! Love todays collages and YES, definitely include your collages with your paintings! Congratulations and where in Chicago will you be showing your work? That is exciting. I love that large piece that's behind you in your intros. I had a sketchbook where I actually started collaging, then lost it but recently found it. Okay, there's one collage in it, but I surely can continue. When the hundred day started, I actually decided to do a year of watercolor painting - my usual MO was acrylics. The year will be done in March and I love them so much and learned so much as well. It also gave me fresh ideas when (and if) I go back to acrylics. I am going to try collage again in that sketchbook ... you never know what will come of it 😉 Keep toasty - LindaH
Thanks, Linda! I'll be showing in Glencoe, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago 🤗 I find that sketchbooks often run off and hide when I need them 😆 Congratulations to you on your watercolor adventure! ❤️
@jackieschomburgart I am very familiar with Glencoe - I'm in Des Plaines. You are so right - those sketchbooks really do know how to hide! Lil stinkers!
Oh, I hope you do this on UA-cam again. I find my peace from the chaotic world watching you create on long format. I have IG, but the reels are too fast for my vertigo head, so I can't watch.
I’m so glad to have you watching! And yes, there will be at least one more video on these simple collages and many more videos on various other topics to come! 🤗
Hi Jackie. I make art everyday. Mostly art journaling. That said, I want to mention that you are a part of the inspiration I turn to for ideas or to jump start my muse. I live 30 minutes from Chicago and would love to attend your show if you would like to share info about it. Anni from Deerfield
Yes include collage with painting, and add mixed media which is literally collage w/ painting in one piece right? So 3 different things. You excel at all of them, so show off a little! ❤
I have tried (and failed to complete) the 100 day challenge twice now... If it only took 5 minutes! I don't have a dedicated space so I use the dinner table. So it means cleaning it off from the last meal 😄, setting it up, deciding on my project and cleaning up after. So even a 5 minute project takes an hour!!!! (which I rarely have). So I am relegated to 1 or 2 times a week.....
I feel you - it takes time to get everything set up even for a short project! What if you limited your project to one tiny sketchbook and one pen/pencil/paint color/crayon and kept it all in a “go-bag” on your table? Just an idea to cut down on the prep and clean up ❤️
@jackieschomburgart Thanks for the suggestion. I asked for a sketchbook for Christmas in an effort to simplify and got new ink pens on Friday so I will try to keep it simple.... Only 2 days in to this method of being creative 🤞
First of all my friend, the others who told you that your collage and your painting are both recognizable -- I 🦾STRONGLY agree!! Second, during your voice-over you actually gave an important reason why this is true. And before I share it, I also believe 🦾STRONGLY it should be the name of your upcoming show. "An Exercise In Simplicity" And if you want justification for why I believe that to be true, as well as why I think it would make a great name for your show, well that would take a conversation.... I LOVE these most recent collage pieces. The results have evolved over the past 330 days so I'm wondering if you are noticing a shift as you look back to the early days? Alas my "what are you going to do today?" is taking much longer than 5 minutes but was necessary for my sanity. I've been cataloguing my enormous (how did that happen?) collection of stencils. It's tedious, but rewarding and in the end they'll be in a state where I can find, reference and easily use them. Be well! ❤♥♥
Hmm, did you really “fail”? Or did you do it for X days (5? 15? 37?) in a row? I understand what you’re saying, but I think it’s important that we all give ourselves credit for the things we DO do. Doing something for ANY number of days in a row sounds like success in my book ❤️
Personally, I really enjoy seeing you audition different collage pieces. Just seeing the end product would be a very different experience. That said, I don't blame you a bit if you don't film them all. But maybe film at least some of them going through the process.
Could you give a quick explanation of what you mean by 100 day project? I love your collages! Also i hope you don't switch completely to insta reels - i like videos so much better.
Yes, of course! If you google the 100 day project you’ll find the website for it - basically just finding one very easily achievable creative goal and doing it every day for 100 days in a row. Many people post their 100 day projects on Instagram and It’s fun to follow the hashtags to see all of the projects people do and we’re all doing the same 100 days. ❤️

Thank you - That's such a great reminder that a theme can be a uniting thread, while also allowing for individual expression. ❤️

Yay! So happy to join you for Sunday lunch! ❤️❤️❤️
grateful for yr consistent randomness... such a gift to flow w/creative flux beyond time constraints, & experience completion... and... you make it fun every which way... too cool.
Thanks! So happy you’re enjoying the journey! ❤️
A few years ago I did 100 faces and 100 owls. These were done in 5 x 7 mixed media journals. It is so fun to go back and look at them and see growth.
Oh wow! I can imagine the 100 owl portraits show a wonderful range of refinement as you continued on. Great project! ❤️
I love your “littles”My practice is on much larger pieces most always, but you sooo inspire me to go the “little” route more often!
It’s always fun to mix it up with different sizes! ❤️
LOL! Your collages scream Jackie as much as your paintings! Even though fluorescent red, celadon, and B/W stripes don’t necessarily dominate. Love em all

Jackie I love your collage! They are so different to your painting and I'm so impressed by that! It's like you're 2 artists in 1! 😂❤
Thanks Linda! ❤️

@jackieschomburgart yes it does and off I go in a different direction for a few days 😄
@michelleinScotland Same here! 😆

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Ellen! ❤️ Hooray for your collage collection! Can’t wait to see what you create this year!
I paint everyday since I started last July. I am addicted. so that helps!! ❤
WOW! Go, Mary, go!! 🔥🔥🔥❤️
So inspiring! Love the keeping the options small . I hope your son is feeling better. I bet he’s creative too. I’ve been working on the gel plate. I try to do a quick sit down but I get obsessed with the randomness.
It’s very easy to get carried away with the gel plate! 🤗 (and my son is doing well now, thank you ❤️)
Am I going to do a 100 day project this year?? With the inspiration you give to me Jackie ~ I think I might!!
~❤~ 😊
Oooooh, yes! Go for it! You have nothing to lose 🌈🤗❤️
I make something most days, but I dabble in several mediums, so I'm not always playing in the same category of making each day.
It sounds like you have a wonderfully diverse art practice! ❤️

❤your art! Im not into collage, but I love your work, because I think we should recycle.
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️

So much goodness here, Paul! Thank you! ❤️ I’d love to hear more about this “exercise in simplicity” title suggestion - I’m intrigued…
Every year I try the 100 day project, and every year I fail. Maybe if I do 100 pieces of art instead of “days” it will feel less pressured.
Hmm, did you really “fail”? Or did you do it for X days (5? 15? 37?) in a row? I understand what you’re saying, but I think it’s important that we all give ourselves credit for the things we DO do. Doing something for ANY number of days in a row sounds like success in my book ❤️

Oh, and I’m definitely not switching to only doing reels/short videos - the short ones are just snippets of my longer videos 🤗
That’s so funny … your work is 100% you, and the collage and paintings both show the same hand of the artist. Disconnect? No…
Thank you! I love that you see my artistic voice in both my collage and painting work! 🤗
💜💛💚💙
