Journeys had multiple flaws. Filler, Nostalgia bait, Goh, that stupid dracovish and so on
Although Journey's had a lot of problems, I think one of the biggest thing it did right was things from other series. We got to see how Paul grew from his interactions with Ash, treating his Pokemon with more respect. We got to see how Iris went from a whiny kid to a mature champion. We saw how Dawn continued her dream. We got to see a bunch of champions from previous series and see how they were doing now. We got to see Lillie reunite with her father. We got several episodes where we spent time with Ash's old Pokemon. But for me, the biggest was the way we saw the people in Alola support Ash, their champion, like everyone was part of one big family.
We get that a lot of the time anyway 🤷🏽♂️
In all honesty, before new characters were announced for Pokemon Horizons, I was really worried that Goh was going to take over as the main character once Ash left. But I’m glad that wasn’t the case at all! Liko and Roy are amazing new main characters I think.
The biggest mistake is that they did not give ash any galar starter 😅
Honestly this is my opinion but it would have been the better choice if gou's character was treated like korrina travel with Ash for a bit then part ways cuz if gou's character was based off pokemon go then they could have did a promotion like they did with gold and silver remake in DP basically like they did with lyra and they could have just made Ash travel by himself just traveling the regions and visiting familiar places but that's just me
Journeys kinda sucked. It was rushed, Goh steals spotlights from Ash who actually deserved screentime, it destroys the original concept of Pokémon and nostalgia, etc.

I will always defend Goh as a character, but the writing, specifically for most of his captures, was just horrible. Most of them never saw any use beyond the occasional episode set at Cerise Park, captures that seemed meaningful like Aerodactyl ended up being minor in the long run while seemingly minor ones like Dewgong and Scyther ended up being used constantly, and then there’s Grookey and Suicune. I understand what they were trying to do with Suicune, but after decades of it being obvious that Legendaries typically can’t be captured, having Goh catch Suicune right at the start of the episode, even if it was injured, was a very jarring thing to do. They should’ve made the story a two-parter and have Goh catch Suicune at the end of the first episode, then spend the second having Goh earn its trust. But Grookey? Completely irredeemable in every way, the way he was rescued from Team Rocket felt so wrong and forced, and Goh didn’t need to catch him in the first place, they really should’ve given him to Ash instead so he wouldn’t have had to be the cute, useless marketable secondary mascot of the series. But perhaps the most foolish decision of all was making Journeys episodic, that completely misses the point of the anime in the first place, we watch it because we like seeing how they adapt the games’ stories or the ones they make, you can’t tell a fulfilling story if you treat every episode like it’s filler, it made the few episodes that did have meaningful plot less impactful.
I will always be a massive Goh defender eternally. I understand that he’s a very polarizing character because either people hate him or like him.
Personally, I didn’t mind him as co-protagonist but the writing was all over the place and I do like his goal conceptually but it doesn’t really work out and not saying that episodic is bad because I genuinely love episodic content but not sure if it works for the Pokemon franchise, at least not right now.
My personal problem is not how Goh and Chole are bad characters because I think are fine on their own but how they are written and they deserved a better series than Journeys!!! 😬😞🤷🏻♀️

I get why many fans often claim that "Ash should have gotten Grookey because it is tradition that Ash catches at least one starter per series and that Grookey has the same personality as him." However, had Grookey been caught by Ash, it can be universally hated by fans for being a Rowlet ripoff (comic relief and using a special gimmick), a Bulbasaur ripoff (similar to Torterra and Snivy), a Bayleef ripoff if it only remained in its midstage as a Thwackey or a Sceptile 2.0 if
Rillaboom is intended to be the main ace. Plus, Ash is a Champion yet people think that "as long as Ash has at least one starter, kids will automatically love it"?
Or the fact that fans whine that Goh was given all three starters, yet people think Ash owning all three starters is automatically a good thing even though Ash's Johto and Unova team failed the fans?
The other issue is that the "Ash gets a Grass starter" tradition is way overused. It's part of the reason why Chespin was given to Clemont in XY even though Chespin should have been a Chesnaught and learn Thunder Punch and why Grookey was given to Goh, because Ash getting a new starter undermines his skill as Champion. On top of that, there were no female main protagonists that started their Pokemon journeys with a Grass starter (May had Torchic which is now a Blaziken, Dawn had Piplup, Serena had Fennekin which is now a Delphox and Lana had Popplio that is now a fully evolved Primarina), hence why Liko was given Sprigatito in Horizons.

The series started with that catchphrase but the show isn't just all about that. As the series went on it shows that Pokemon can literally just not like to be caught by you, you have to bond with them and get to know them before becoming partners. All of that narrative was thrown out the window. Goh treats his pokemon with decency but they're just like Collectables to him and nothing more

Let's just say that I could agree that they made mistake in Pokemon Journeys. It was supposed to be a good series but no, they did so roughly they shouldn't rushing their work, it'd be a mess up

I mean every single protagonist of Journeys was a waste. Goh you just explained it, Ash was turned into an insufferable Mary Sue throughout this whole series, and Chloe well...
I LOVE Chloe at the beginning of the series. She's introverted (so am I), is annoyed by Ash's dumb antics (so am I), and she's not interested in Pokémon in the way that most people are (so am I).
In fact, she likes Pokémon, but she doesn't really find any interest in expressing it in the way that's expected of people in this world. But she doesn't know how she wants to express it either.
People don't understand her, her classmates think that she doesn't like Pokémon at all, which is not true, and hearing them say that about her makes her feel inadequate (which is relatable).
Her journey of self-discovery could have been so interesting, leading her to find her own way to interact with Pokémon, one she's comfortable with and that may lead to her to offer a new perspective, a new way to interact with Pokémon in this world that definitly needs it.
But instead of finding how she wants to express her individuality, offering something new and showing this world that didn't understand her a new way to do things that was never considered before, she just got Eevee and became a trainer like any other.
Such a waste.

@@natalimoina I can assure you I know a lot about Pokémon and its narratives. Probably more than you do. For example, do you know anything about the lore surrounding Pokémon Life Force ?
It’s disappointing to me that both Goh and Chole still get hated to this day. I, for one actually like Goh and Chole as characters and found their goals interesting.
Problem is the overall execution has left to be desired and they deserve better writing. I know that a lot of people didn’t like how Goh ate up the majority of the screentime.
As for Chole, I felt bad for her voice actresses (English and Japanese) because I think a lot of people misunderstood her character and I like her self-discovery journey but again, the execution was not that great.
It would been nice to have Ash have one of the Galar starters but Goh infamously had all of them. Personally, I don’t dislike Goh’s Grookey whatsoever but he was definitely a overhated character ever since his appearance and I can see how he would be annoying for many people but I wasn’t bothered.
I wasn’t ok of how undeveloped he was throughout the season and its such a shame how Ash’s team was heavily underdeveloped while certain members that got more screentime and development than others.
And I wouldn’t say that Ash’s dumb tactics annoyed me but rubbbed me the wrong way sadly.
Journeys certainly had its problems but I don’t dislike it. 🙂↕️😞
I feel like Journeys was attempting to test the waters, to see how people responded to Ash not being the single protagonist anymore. Had Goh been handled better, and if this hadn't been Ash's last series, I don't think people would have reacted so negatively. But, seeing as the latter happened, I feel people disliking Goh is quite justified, as the main hero of Pokemon was very ignored at many points in the series, (such as having World Coronation battles off screen).

I was ok with Journeys except for two things, 1 Poketubers having a deep hatred for the idea of using English names such as Chloe and the World Coronation, 2 the fact that Ash never went and defeated Giovanni and destroyed Team Rocket like I had thought he was supposed to ever since I got into Pokemon during the late Advanced series. Other than that it was fine.
This is a Wii u to Switch situation. Journeys Walked so horizons could run. World Travel Formula This time they really travel from region to region instead of one episode they are in Kalos in the next episode they are in Sinnoh. Dot has the same role as Chloe but actually gets screen time and a lot of character development, more than Roy even. And the story is the best it's ever been

On tip of everything you just said in the video, I think the biggest problem was ash's pokemon not getting enough/consistent screen time. There was no excuse for this. In sun and moon most of ash's pokemon appeared in every episode

Disregarding the Galar itinerary. If it were up to me, the saga would have 6 parts (not one per year.) Southern Galar, the Wild Area, North Galar, The Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra, and the Galar Final.
Goh and Chloe are the worst Ash companions ever
Chloe is not really considered as a companion. No offense, but I agree: They're unoriginal, they steal spotlights, and they're just moneyfarms.
Other than that, they're fine.

I think we can all agree that Pokémon Journeys was bad for the most part. They rushed several storylines and did not focus enough on ending Ash's journey in the anime.

I'm on the hand. I think Journeys is good. It is honestly far from the worst. I dont think what they did was wrong. They just didn't properly handle it. To be honest, Goh, catching every pokemon is not a bad idea. It can honestly work. They just didn't fully got it.

Ash development throughout the ages was always plagued by promotional writing approach I keep saying it and I know that was going to be its weakest link to Ash's Legacy.
the Development team really didn't realize how bad it was until Journeys, at least if we look back on previous sagas, since the stories revolved around the primary games it was doable in Anime format, but they didn't take into account how Pokémon Go and Let's Go are completely different games that requires last effort to collect Pokémon. On top of that, rebranding or rebooting Ash to promote the new regions was really starting to run its course.

Yeah the series was a mess! Goh was definitely a mistake! Having him surpass Ash's # of pokes in a single season, was disrespectful. I didn't watch majority of that series at all. Only came to watch certain episodes that had returning characters. And the fact that they purposely made this series Ash's final journey was a slap in the face. After that I quit watching the current series altogether. I only watch the anime of the past.

Goh never should've been a co-protagonist. He was hogging Ash's spotlight. He wasted Grookey, & the writers should've given Grookey to Ash. Ash would've had a real beast of a Rillaboom that could've been as powerful as Leon's. Letting Ash catch more than 5 pokemon. They should've let Ash use his other past pokemon in the WCS too & having some of them evolving, defeating all the league rivals he lost to, & beating all the regional champions, & never losing to weak nobody trainers. No pointless filler episodes. And Team Rocket was wasted & felt mostly pointless in this series.

Goh either needed to be a bridge to the next series/successor to Ash or not there at all and all Ash focused. I kinda liked the idea of his goal but agree that it was never gonna be completed in one series.

Johto: Too much filler which results in poor pacing, the main characters were getting stagnant, Heracross and Noctowl were underused and it took until Sinnoh to give them redemption in battle, Donphan wouldn't get proper development until Battle Frontier, the three Johto starters were inferior replacements for the Kanto starters and none fully evolved.
Unova: Ash regressed into rookie level trainer, Iris and Cilan really couldn't succeed Misty and Brock, the Unova League was a sick joke, Trip was a poor replacement for Paul (it says something in Journeys when Trip only has a non speaking cameo, unlike Paul who prepared Ash for the Masters 8) Ash caught too many Unova Pokemon and the writers disregarded evolution because they thought "kids love cute unevolved Pokemon more than fully evolved mons" which is garbage because anyone could point out that relying on personality, cuteness and comedy is not a legit way of developing characters both of which caused Ash to regress from top 4 in Sinnoh to top 8 in Unova. Also, the Unova starters tried to reinvent the Kanto starter trio only to fail again because they didn't fully evolve and each were deemed unworthy successors to the Kanto starter trio. BW is the main reason why the staff cannot give Ash all three starters anymore.
Journeys: Episodic formula, too much filler, disregarding Ash's reserves until after Ash beat Leon, overglorifying Kanto (most of the setting was at Cerise Lab in Vermillion City in Kanto, along with To be a Pokemon Master a homage to the original series, which angered viewers and part of the reason why Horizons was created). Some episodes are good, but an episodic formula does not work.

I don't think Goh was a bad character, he is just had been handle better.
He had some good moments. They really focus that Goh wasnt exactly perfect. Him not fighting to capture things, the poor trainer skills and managing his Pokémon. I think Project Mew should had been debut much earlier. Make a "pseudo" contest or Pokemon Ranger Mission. "Hi i need you to go to Jotho and try to gather information about Hitmon Family." "There been a major fire in Hoen, try to provide some assitance to the wild Pokemon of that area."
Let's be be honest Ash's journey to Champion League sucked. We had to focus on plain battles of random characters to characters that Ash already meet or fighted. Let's see Ash being tested in other ways. "You have to battle with rental pokemon." "You have do double battle." "Type Advantage and Weakness are reversed." "You are now Gym leaders and you have defend your title against 10 trainers of differents skills." "You have to fight against a Weather team."
I think that the writers forgot that Chloe was a thing.
I think Journey's would've been much better if the whole series was more of a culmination of all of Ash's adventures rather than the episodic mess we got. My main gripe is that Ash just went on a new adventure with new friends and a new team with only the occasional cameo of past characters and Pokemon. Ideally, Ash would catch the Pokemon he had in Journeys, but he would also cycle through his old members as well, while interacting with old characters far more often and far more in-depth than he did, and at the end, take on the Masters 8 with his greatest team ever.
His traveling companions would also consist of old and new members. We'd have Ash, the battler; Serena, the performer; Mallow, the chef; and Goh, the smart one (specifically early Goh, when he was quirky). These 4 could have interesting character dynamics. Ash and Goh would be the best bros always getting into trouble together, Ash and Serena have that romantic sub plot they could flesh out (not really since it's a kids show), Serena and Mallow could bond over cooking and baking, Goh could use his overanalytical methods to help Mallow's cooking improve, Mallow's natural personality could help Goh get past his ego problem and trouble making friends. And that's just off the top of my head. They'd travel around the world chasing their dreams and supporting each other, running into and having adventures with old and new friends and enemies alike. Given proper pacing and development, this could've been the perfect way to wrap up Ash's story.
If I were any good at writing, I'd definitely write a fanfic about this.
The production team was heavily understaffed which didn’t help either and 90% of Journeys can revised and rewritten in my opinion because most people would definitely agree that a culmination of Ash’s journey and development would be more interesting than an episodic format.
Not saying that the episodic format was bad in my opinion but not everyone’s going to see that way and the execution was mediocre.
And even so, I would take Journeys at the end of the day because Johto also had a ton of filler to begin with.
I can’t imagine of what being a professional writer would be like for my own perspective!!! 🤷🏻♀️🤣
1:31 Actually, if had the writers/ anime allowed Goh to catch at least 10 or more pokemon per episode throughout the pokemon journey's series, Goh could have perhaps completed the current Pokedex or could have been close, reaching 900 or more captures.
Heck, if the anime didn;t want for Goh to catch all the legendaries, they could have had Goh catch nearly all of the non-legendary pokemon, and write off his story of wanting to catch all the legendary and mythical pokemon to complete the current Pokedex.
Goh could have then journeyed to new regions to catch all of their discovered Pokemon.
If they wanted a new protagonist so badly why didn't they just age Ash up have him be a mentor for the next generation of trainers

Journeys should’ve had the region based off in Galar. It would’ve been nice seeing Ash had a lot of captures and have done a lot of rotations with his old Pokémon, also Ash using his strongest Pokémon to battle Leon and use gimmicks with his older Pokémon and maybe even evolve some of his old Pokémon. Also it would’ve been nice to bring back characters that Ash had lost to in previous battles (Richie, Harrison,Tyson, Alain, ect) and have Ash redeem himself against his loses in journeys

Hey Niall Kelly, I really wanted to say about my opinion about the mistakes in the Pokémon Journey saga is About Goh , throwing Pokéballs at wild Pokémon this new running gag has ruined the Pokémon journey saga because The Pokémon animators and writers have gotten lazy and they’re taking the can’t repeat the mistake in the black-and-white anime saga on Ash catching nine Pokémon two literally That’s what ruined the Pokémon journey saga Also Goh has robbed Ash of catching Galar starters Pokémon, Scyther, Pinsir, Aerodactyl, Magikarp, Ekans, Kantonian Slowpoke, Poliwag, Sentret, Kingdra, Pineco, Golbat, Suicune, Wingull, Absol, Altaria, Sharpedo, Camerupt, Alolan Geodude and Alolan Exeggutor!
Ash rarely caught any Pokémon in the whole journey saga. The only first Pokémon he caught is Dragonite it took 10 early Pokémon journey Episodes for him to make his first catch
Also, Chloe Was wasted as a schoolgirl and she had no clue what she she become My opinion, she is the worst pokey gals ever to be wasted as a schoolgirl that saying something The Sun and moon was wasted on Ash going to school In a region without gyms and gym leaders that battled the gym Leaders and earning badges
That’s what ruined the Pokémon, anime saga by making Ash go to school in Alola!

Very good video man. Journeys’ main issue was the absolute lack of focus and poor writing. Outside of probably Johto it’s got the worst writing of any series.

I'm still of the opinion that if Goh was in a different continuity with "Pokemon GO" rules instead the preestablished main anime's ones, his character and goal probably would have fare better story-wise and easier to take in. (On top of that, the writers weaving back and forth between whether he was a equal partner or a 'student of sorts' to Ash's expertise cause even more confusion on the dynamic.)

Paul is just an evil Mistake.
The series kind of rushed ash in being a champion with goh being co-protogonist the writers always had their hands full to do justice with 2 characters. Rather I would have have gone with an approach were most mons of Ash's from previous generations got to evolve to their respective final forms (the ones that wanted. Not forcing the ones who didn't want to) and in this process ash becoming more aware of type advantages move-sets and strategies like never before. This would in a way would have given the long awaited fans a proper proper satisfaction as they would have seen their boy ash who used a little Pikachu against Brock's mighty onix back in the day to this day were he explored the type options between the available pool of options he had. This would have really hyped the series rather than ash staying at galar and completing some random missions for the regions professor he should have stayed at pallet more often to train and organize battle between his mons and should occasionally have visited galar. This is just my thought 😅😅of things which could have been. I do have much more to add but even this would have crossed the rating of the roof.

And when HZ using the fillers in good Day by adding development, major event and connecting to the plot, people still complain just because it was filler, like yoo just because its filler that doesnt mean its bad, even the Shinobi clan from XY js filler, i mean why on earth theres ninja clan on Region based of prance, im pretty sure the writter create these Shinobi thing just for greninja

2. Too many characters, majority of them pointless.
3. Character personalities too similar and nice.
4. Boring generic legendary Pokemon plot.
5. Generic personalities seen in 100s of other anime.
6. Lack of personality in the pokemon.
7. Too reliant on reminding you of the past but not living up to it.
8. Protagonists not allowed to grow because hand held to much.
9. Plot moves at snails pace.
10. Forced telling you dialogue rather than actually showing you.
11. Forgettable antagonist.
12. Lack of emotion.
13. Lack of humour.
14. Making you question if the pokemon anime was ever good in the first place.
15. Objectively poor character designs.

some of the pokemon goh caught were wasted on him and how he snaked the golurk from ash when ash did most of the work to weaken it and how goh caught suicune was just dumb no effort

imagine goh was supposed to be the main character/protagonist while ash as a mentor character howver do fact of national dex cut witch made olm people made pokemon anime and takara tomy do the merch in japan were mad imagine have rewrite the show made goh as the second protagonist and made ash protagonist again because of marketability and heck only reason was in anime show most/kinda every pokemon 890kinda/886 pokemon at the time yeah heck out of gen 8 pokemon appear in Journeys only 77 out of 89 new pokemon in sword and shield at the time
and olm behind the scenes is mess of horrible management,lack of time,terrible leadership,mistreatment of their employess& not enough pay,budget cuts and layoffs this actual cause horizons to be delay originally from around scarlet and violet release to april of last year for japan and march of 2024 for usa heck around this year have to restructure probably for all the behind the scenes mess b heck behind the scenes was so bad around steve/cythina vs ash have put 2 recap episode and one flitter episode in japan this was after covid hole mess of behind the scenes🤦♂ and this also why the final part of journeys was rushed and like you said bad time becuase imagine writers for anime though not going be ash final journey until world champion arc and yeah 🤦♂the behind the scenes mess 🤦♂

I thought it was ok I kinda liked goh not that type if you know what I mean
People always hate on goh bc he catches too many pokemon with ease...like is that really a reason to hate on a character? I mean sure some things he did were annoying but i got over it. I honestly think the Galar Starters suit him really well and goh looks really nice i like his design and his Personality SOO MUCH He's Really Cool!!!!!
Technically, Goh's dream is to take away the freedom of living beings in order to complete his collection.😏
