Yayayayay a black ranunculus 🖤🖤🖤🖤 for a tighter neckline long tail cast on you can also cast on with a smaller needle 🖤
Sun Dragon Art and Fiber Tips and Tricks has step by step tutorials on the Ranunculus. They’re wonderful. I consider myself and experienced knitter but I would not have interpreted the stitches in the neckline correctly without her!
I agree! I’ve knit 9 Ranunculi, and still refer back to Rebecca’s tutorials for specific stitch patterns!
And your Maryanna is beautiful!
Lovely sweater ,,,,,that colorwork !!!
Glad u like the drops Fabel,,,,,Saw it was on sale,,,,but have enough for this time,,,!!!
It is expensive to ship from Canada,,,,,to u,s ,,,,unless it's flat,,!!
Sophie scarf will be awesome in red,,,,
Love my brighter sophie scarf and have a pink one on the go,,,,,
Thanks Amber,,,!!
ElaineXo 🏡🏡🏡
Jessica McDonald has a lovey pattern called Fletching. Great for both beginners and seasoned knitters. Than another one for more advanced knitters.
Dear Amber, I knitted several „Ranunculi“ and always casted on for the wider neckline (90 stitches) with the longtail-cast-on. Them i started with the pattern and decided after i finished the sweater about the neck - sometimes it‘s an i-cord, sometimes twisted ribbing. This way i can adjust the width of the neckline, the sweater has a bit more structure and the ribbing looks neater (and not so stretched out) this way in my opinion. My favourite colourwork-sweater at the moment is the „Soldotna“ from C.Hunter, knitted in fingering weight and with a wider neckline (in case my private summer strikes 🥵).
Thank you for your podcasts, i enjoy them a lot ❣️
I'm probably the only knitter who hasn't knit a ranunculus.😂 love the Maryann sweater and those fun socks!
Thanks again, Dana!
I’ve knit 9 Ranunculi, and have always cast on 60 stitches with the German twisted cast on, and it’s always worked out fine. Just an FYI, Sun Dragon Tips and Tricks podcast has an entire playlist of episodes to demonstrate every part of the Ranunculus, from start to finish. Very good tutorials for beginners! Love your podcasts and look forward to each of your episodes! ❤️
Sun Dragon Tips and Tricks gives explanations on stitches and different cast on. But does not give the pattern away. Still need pattern to make the top. Very good information.
I love Wool & Co also. In the past I’ve had them wind the skeins for me - so easy!! Yarn comes ready to knit!!
I am so glad you are not requiring us to have the sweater finished! This is right in the middle of our High Holy season and I wasn't going to begin tomorrow due to knowing my knitting time was not going to be a plentiful while hosting. I too ordered some fable sock yarn from WW, it hasn't arrived yet. Please let us know how it compares to say Paton's Kroy sock yarn, which is what I miss. I too am excited for fall and jazzed with new projects to come.
I'm feeling your knitting energy!! Two comments - first I knit the Ranunculus using the wider neckline and German Twisted cast-on. It's a perfect fit and not too wide so I'm thinking your idea that it's the cast on is correct. Second, I have a few suggestions for your colorwork sweater video. I am about to cast on the SnowFlower by Heidi Kirrmaier. It's an older pattern, but so very lovely and feminine. Another great one (especially for a beginner colorwork knitter) would be Blizzard by Jessica McDonald. It's a simple motif with very short floats so perfect for a newbie. Other favorites of mine include Snowy Pines also by Jessica McDonald, Arboreal, Avena and Treelight all by Jennifer Steingass
Your red Sofie scarf will be fabulous with your almost-black ranunculous!!
I am tempted to start a ranunculous…even though I already have more projects on the needles than I have attention to give 😂😜
I used to fret about the Sophie Shawl and Scarf. Then I started using a light bulb marker to mark the beginning of a new set so I know when to make a decrease row. I also keep a lightbulb marker on the front side of the piece as a reminder. By using the lightbulb markers, it’s easy and enjoyable.
That's exactly what I do,,,,and no problem,,,elaine
I HIGHLY recommend Orlane Sucche's colourwork sweaters. She is really a genius at fitting... the ones I've made all have beautiful short row shaping, as well as a compound armscye that adds raglan increases under the colourwork yoke so that the sleeve opening has a really lovely shape. (I think the Ranunculus does this also, right?) It allows for so much more movement and comfort. I actually add this technique to all colourwork/circular yoke sweaters now.
It's my personal goal to knit every single one of Orlane's patterns so I can't recommend them enough. Also Orlane patterns + Retrosaria yarns is a match made in heaven. :)
Thank you Amber for the exciting podcast and the news of the knit along. The Marianne Sweater is beautiful the other knits as well. I am not sure about the boxy knit. Take care and 😊😊❤
Hi Amber, looking forward to the KAL! I’ve had yarn set aside for a winter ranunculus for awhile now so this is propelling me to cast on! I’ve only knit two colorwork sweaters - so far my favorite was Arboreal by Jennifer Steingass that I knit for my daughter who is a horticulture major! It came out beautiful. I am currently working on the Sheep Camp Sweater but have yarn and pattern for the Mariana sweater which now seeing yours I am itching to cast on! I have knit 3 ranunculus so far but always use the German Twisted cast on and the 60 stitch cast on as well to get a perfect neck. I have eliminated the front short rows and added two extra short rows to the back to keep the neck from riding up in the front though. Thanks again for a lovely “visit”!
Hi Amber ! I’m in Canada and very close to Mary Maxim in Ontario. The prices are in Cdn dollar plus if you sign up as a first time shopper they give you 15% off first offer! Gillian x
Hi Gillian! Thank you for explaining that to me! I'll have to see how much it costs to have things shipped here from Canada. When I've wanted to order some other things from there, the shipping was near $20!
@@alovelyyarn that’s what happens when I have yarn shipped from US! But with your US dollar being much stronger than our cdn, you are ahead of me lol
Hands down, my favorite color work sweater is the Porty Pullover by Gudrun Johnstone. I've made it about six times for myself and gifts.
Patons Kroy and WYS are my most favorite sock yarns! I've had good luck on Etsy for Patons Kroy as well. Your MaryAnna sweater is GORGEOUS!
Thank you again for sharing your crafting adventures. 😍
I cast on 74 STS in the normal way , after the twisted rib l increase to 90 & carry on . Works perfectly for me . I enjoy your podcast thanks
Amber, I hope you feel better soon!!! You are the most sincere person and I just love watching your podcasts. I am definitely going to follow along on the gift knitting and the blanket. Blessings to you and your family over the holidays and I am looking forward to future podcasts in 2024. Merry Christmas.
Thank you so very much!
Hello Amber, from New Zealand.
I still enjoy all your sharing.
You inspire, encourage and motivate me in all things knitting.
Thank you.
I very much enjoy watching your videos each week. Your colorwork sweater is beautiful, the flowers look like sunflowers. I cast on the Felix cardigan a couple days ago & am enjoying it. I made the Felix pullover last year & used Berroco Mercado yarn for both. The only colorwork sweater I made was Vintersol by Jennifer Steingass. The yoke was easy especially for me & my first time making a colorwork sweater.
Looking forward to the Ranunculus KAL using DK yarn from my stash.
Have a nice week.
I knit at my church too! Certainly does help me focus on what the pastor is saying. 🙃
I am really enjoying your podcast! I am currently working on the Unbearable Hoodie by Les Garçons, and am loving it! I held mohair with the yarn on the bear heads only, so they are fuzzy! I plan to modify it to make a crewneck instead of a hoodie. Wish me luck!!
I LITERALLY just finished my first ranunculus while watching this! I really enjoyed it
I love Patagonia yarn...I have one sweater and a shawl knit with it, and will use it again. I knitted the Gloam, inspired by Jana of Finnish Knitting Stories. I did a couple of modifications...I cast on the back using provisional cast-on, knitted 12" of the back, and put the back on hold. Picked up the provisional stitches and knit down the left and right front...then joined up with the back to knit the body in one piece (clear as mud?). Maybe I've explained it better on my project page, Grannyswhoknit.
Another sock yarn to try from Wool Warehouse is James Brett Funny Feetz With Bamboo. I'm currently using it for a pair of socks and I really like it ❤
you have a wonderful gift of making me feel as though we're having coffee and talking all things knitting together. Thank you. Don't worry about the "hot season" it will pass. . . and then there will be the season when you have to wear fingerless gloves to the grocery store in summer!!
I love my Arbor that I made in Patagonia yarn. It has held up way better than I expected for a 2 ply. It stuck together and is light too! Love it.
HI, I have the Ranunculus. pattern but have never knitted... I would love to join.
I also enjoyed watching you knit the Maryanna sweater. I was looking at yarn.. I might do in a midnight color with gold color work. Nice inspiration from you... Thank you
I love wool & company!!!
I'm able to locate items i can find nowhere else!!
I got a pebble shawlette done in less than 4 days!! And I made it a tad bigger because I didn't want leftovers... I ended with 5gr!!
I'm excited that I was chosen to do a sample knit for an indy dyer, I know the pattern, she's dyeing the yarn as we speak!! So KALs are kinda out for me until its done. 🤷
Chinese waitress(double chain cast on) is soooo easy & VERY stretchy... I actually use it for hats now... It's done with a crochet hook and a knitting needle.... I was actually surprised, because it's a short tail.
But I honestly don't know how it would work for a neckline, but it's worth a shot...... And its pretty.
Wonderful, Amber - always happy to see you’ve posted a new episode!
Amber, you color work is beautiful ❤
I really love your version of the colorwork sweater!
Really loving all your choices for fall knitting! I’m looking forward to seeing everything progress. ❤
Excited to make my first Ranunculous. I have my pattern. Going to LYS tomorrow. I have never joined a knit along and do not have Instagram. Hmmm
Fun episode! I’m really looking forward to this kal! I love your colorwork sweater!
I so enjoy having coffee in the morning with you Amber! One day I hope to be an accomplished knitter like you! I plan to knit my first complete pair of socks this winter, and I love Paton's Kroy sock yarn, as well as the fun patterned yarn you showed here! Peace and Blessings to you and your family 🧶🌻
It was so great to spend time with you today, Amber! Your sweater is looking beautiful (and also I’m definitely looking forward to your colorwork video)! Thanks for giving the link to the UA-cam videos about the ranunculus - that doesn’t make it feel so confusing! I look forward to knitting it with you all!
Someday I will do a sweater for myself!! I am still into blankets, I have 2 going and so many other projects!! Your sweaters are amazing!
Fall is such a homey and special time, before winter sets in!!
GM Amber
I’m so happy you ripped back your colour way sweater
It fits you so beautifully now
Can’t wait to see this finished 😊
Loved the pod
😊💝
Hello from Mounds, Illinois. I have to purchase most of my yarn on line because the closest yarn store from me is about three hours away in St. Louis, Missouri.
Hi Amber, if you love colorwork sweaters, you should try the Pressed Flowers Cardigan. No boring stockinette knitting. I'm knitting one now with Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia and a Zauberball 6. Like you I need cardigans 🥵
I have not participated in a KAL or made a ranunculus before. Since I work my knitting time is limited. However the rules for this KAL make it feasible to join!! I’m so excited. Now, what yarn to choose!!
Hi Amber
I’m currently making my 3rd ranunculus and I’ve done a long tail cast on for each and the necklines are perfect for me.
Wool and co can also wind up all your skeins of yarn if they come in hanks! I love that store
Enjoyed another lovely episode, your colourwork jumper is beautiful- no wonder you couldn’t put it down 🌸
Hello Amber I’m looking forward to knit the ranunculus, it will be my first!
I love the sweater your knitting - absolutely gorgeous! I really liked knitting The Fosette by Knitty McPurley. It is shown as cropped sweater but, of course, you can make it longer with longer sleeves.
Your colorwork sweater reminds me of the Misurina pattern which I knit three. 😊
Love your video! I think your Gloom will be great in that color! I have it on my bucket list!!
Thank you! I'm excited to make it!
I can’t wait to see your Gloam sweater! That cardigan has been on my favorites list for a long time. I’m very curious to see how you like the knitting process and finished piece! The yarn you chose is perfect 🤍
Parish Lines Sweater by Beth MacDonald Stone; heard Ray from Needles at the ready talk about this one he did a test knit for the pattern, it uses worsted weight for the color work and fingering weight for rest of sweater. Festive Yoke pullover by Skeindeer knits, I have made this for a gift and love all the options it provides; Tan Tan by Yamagata is a super easy mosaic. My favorite of all time has not been released yet sadly, I did the test knit a year ago and pattern was designed to be a kit for a yarn shop, thus the delay, the designer does have some other patterns worth a look Terri Maue.
Amber I just finished the Alaska sweater. I used the called for yarn but I used a white tweed instead of dark for the trees so they look like trees in the snow. I think you would like this one.💕🧶
Love all these!! Thanks for inspiring us. Sometimes I think about taking my knitting to church. 😂
Another wonderful podcast! I know what you mean about colorwork being addictive...Yes! I find it so hard to put it down. I'm currently working on the Agnes Jumper by Camilla Vad... the yoke looks like a stained glass window. ♥ p.s. Agree...Wool and Co. is awesome! Great selection and prices, plus free shipping. I found them after my local yarn shop closed.
I have enough worsted Wool of the Andes that I've been holding on to, I might just devote it to a ranunculus! Thanks for this episode!
I have an alpine bloom colorwork sweater in my lap now. I am loving it so far. The neck, cuffs and hem are lace. I chose lace for the neck but will rib the cuffs and hem. I am using the expensive spincycle and wondering why I didn’t choose just two solid colors. Those versions are lovely.
Jana from Finnish Knitting Stories knit the Gloam some time ago. It's beautiful.
Sun Dragon arts and fiber did a tutorial on all the different sections that helped me get through my first ranunculus.
I have my Sunday socks that go to church with me during pm service😂 I have to have something and socks are perfect. Sunday evening socks is what a call them.
I am knitting a ranuculus out of drops belle. I cast on 90 stitches to match the instructions where it gives the stitch count "after both co". I then knitted an inch of twisted rib. It looks like it will be fine.
I'm planning on the Lunenburg Pullover by Amy Christoffers for my next colorwork. Have some Briggs and Little Sport set aside for it. I used their Regal DK for a TULC Cardigan. It's a nice wooly yarn, and Maritime Family Fiber is a great online source at a great price.
I love Wool and Company too. They keep a good stock of Lett Lopi, and have lots of good brands. Love the free shipping! That Patagonia looks very nice.
I am hoping to cast on another Ranunculus and join the KAL. I have made 2 so far, and did the 60 stitch cast on using Andrea Mowry's tubular cast on method. My neck opening is just fine, not large at all. Really, I couldn't be bothered with the 2 cast on methods given.
Anyway, always lovely to sit and knit with you. Glad you are having some lovely weather. We are enjoying the same here in Oregon. It's so nice to have the windows open all the time!!
I have knit 3 Ranunculi and I always follow the pattern for the "wider neckline", but I use the German Twisted Cast On. My finished necklines look just like yours so I think you are spot on - it's the cast on that makes the difference.
Currently knitting the Nordic Nights sweater.
Really enjoying your podcast. I just finished Winter Woods by Jessica McDonald (of Fletching fame). Great knit. But I used a different yarn than the unspun called for, and it doesn’t fit as well as I had hoped. I might try it again in an unspun and see if the drape is better than what I used - a rustic wool, great yarn but maybe not for this pattern. Knit and learn!
WOW! That color for your ranunculus looks so blue on the TV screen, not black/gray at all.
Hi Amber, I just loved this episode! I did make a renunclues (sp.) I made it three times and ended up with one, the second time I used a dk weight and it turned out very light weight and a bit smallish. So I pulled it out and knit everything the same only double yarn. And it turned out wonderful. But, I ran out of yarn. I had used a yellow and had two other yellows in my stash. One was a very good match, the second pretty close. But a different fiber content. So I made it a fade for the last five inches, and it turned out great. I was so proud of myself. Didn’t have to buy more yarn, which is not a good deal when ordering one ball! Now, I did close the long tail cast on and just cast on the full 90 stitches for the neck. It was done in twisted rib and was perfect! Sometimes it works to just do what you want to do. 😊
Hi Cassandra! I love that you made it work. That is such a satisfying feeling; when you can use what you have to make it all work out!
Hi Amber, fyi Wool & Co 10% discount only applies to some of their yarns, not all - but, it is a nice selection.
I thoroughly enjoyed your podcast. Your Maryanna sweater is so gorgeous, it makes me want to drop everything and cast one on! And I haven’t made a Ranunculus…yet. I’m planning to do the Stephen West MKAL, so I won’t be starting until at least November, but hopefully I can finish my son’s Christmas gift by then. As you can tell, I’m like you - I just want to make all the things!
It's definitely a struggle, wanting to make all of the things! And because knitting typically requires sitting, I feel yucky if I sit for too long and knit. Unless it's at night. That doesn't bother me because I'm winding down before bed. Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for another great podcast. May you share the main peachy pink colour of your Ruska sweater that you briefly showed. I tried finding a Ravelry project account for you but didn’t. Thanks!
Regarding the cast on number for the Ranunculus (and other info)--knitters might want to check out Selma of Little Big Knits. She has made 5 or 6 of them. I found her mentioning them in the titles of Ep 48, 53, 73 and 83. Thanks for sharing Amber. PS I just cast on my Snuggle Puddle Vest. Hope this one isn't too big.
Thank you so much for sharing this info, Kim!
I plan to cast on my Ranunculus Saturday. I’m using Cloudborn highland wool fingering weight with a strand of mohair, both of which are gray. I’m not on Instagram but hopefully will send a picture when it’s done .❣️
Hi I enjoy your podcast. I wanted to let you know Paton kroy or any patons yarn can be ordered from yarnspirations . I use Paton kroy a lot and love it. It also makes great hats . I am lucky that I live close to an amazing Joanne’s. Happy fall.
I frogged my Ranuculus because I simply hated how the cast on looked with mine. I am just going to try the long-tail cast-on again based on your experience.
Hi Amber! Love your color work sweater. I have the Viola Tee by Ronja Hakehleto in my que on Ravelry. It’s hard to keep up with my knitting mojo these days. I want to cast on everything in my que and then some. A few months ago I told my sister about Wool and Company. She has placed several orders already. We love the. They will even wind your yarn for free so you can jump right into knitting. What’s not to like. I’m going to try the Ranunculus sweater using a worsted weight yarn. Should be interesting. I hope it works out like I envision.
The long tail cast on definitely gives you a smaller neckline. I’ve made one with the tubular cast on but using a number 5mm needle and my neckline is not wide at all. Very lovely sweater.
The gloam is very similar to a sweater I knitted several years ago. It is called Janesville.
I have rented a book from the library " the art of circular yoke" and knitted 2 of the colorwork sweaters that are my favorites ; 'Diamond 'by Sarah Redmond and 'sigidur' by Paula Pereira
Amber which size is your Sophie scarf, I see there are 2 sizes? Thanks for your time. Another great video.
Good luck with your first KAL! I can't join because the round yoke sweater doesn't work for me. I'll knit along with my poppy tee and watch your progress on the sidelines 😊
Hello Giselle! Oh no! I have heard of others having problems with round yokes. Yes, knit along on your poppy tee! Thank you for watching!
Hi Amber! I‘m from Switzerland and I‘d like to share my favorite colorwork sweaters: Cake Crop
by Olga Putano Designs and Slipped September 2022 KAL
by Iris Schreier. You’l find them both on ravelry. I hope they give you inspiration… Have a wonderfull day! Yolanda
Thank you so much for watching and for these suggestions!
Glad to see your worsted ranunculus....one you dont have see-through problems with. That plus the 3 times I've started it and messed it up has discouraged me, but will probably start again with your KAL.
Just a note: Wool and company will also wind your skeins free!
Awesome colorwork pullover. I love it! Great tip on needle size change for color work. I just finished my first colorwork pullover and it fits perfectly except where the color work is around the shoulder area. I am so bummed. When I can handle it I will try again. It was the Birkin. The fist section was fine as the floats were shorter. It’s when I had longer floats and three colors going that it got tight. Ugh. Live and learn
Oh the Birkin! That was probably not your fault! My Birkin fit ridiculous and I had to completely frog it. I'm going to reknit it because I love the look of the colorwork so much, but I'm going to modify it as I go. So don't be discouraged! That is a tough colorwork sweater anyway, and definitely challenging for a first one!
@@alovelyyarn it is strange between the neck and shoulders. I also realized that I didn’t like the flare from going up needle sizes. Next time I would just stick to the one size. Now I feel scared to try again. Thanks for the feedback
I’m about to start an Ranuculus. I’m a beginner knitter and a little nervous, however I’ll never know if I can do it till I try. Love your Chanel. Oh, and I’m knitting it in cotton because we’re heading into summer here. 🙋🏼♀️🇦🇺
Just a FYI. On you tube there is “Sun Dragon Tips and Tricks”. They walk you through that pattern from start to finish, demonstrating each stitch. 😊
Like the colors you picked for Ruska. Could you save it by surgery into a cardigan?
My friend and I wanted the loose neckline but could never get it.
These are ones that I have knitted. Strom Cardigan by Rachel Hunter , Uist by Marie Wallin,Lily by Marie Wallin , Angelica by Marie Wallin , Ember by Yuko shimizu , WIPs Scafell by Marie Wallin , and Pohjolan neito sweaterby Jenna K.
Thank you so much for sharing those with me, Dawn!
Wow. Very ambitious!
Hello, I really like the Yell cardigan by Marie Wallin, the poet sweater by Sari Nordland, the Soldotna Crop by boylandknitworks. I do not understand the ranunculus success, but only my opinion.
❤
Thank you for watching!
Hi Amber! I am currently working on Mantou by Isabelle Kramer. I am loving the Colorwork yoke on it.
What size of needles did you use for the Ranunculus you are wearing ?
Hello! I'm pretty sure I used a size US 9.
Maybe spend your time spinning them when your body is ready for sweaters again you can knit with your handspun. Just a thought.
Good thought!
For the Kal how is Canada for mail because you say US and international?
Anywhere outside of the United States would be considered international, in my mind. So any viewers outside of the US would be eligible to pick two patterns off of either Ravelry or Etsy. Is that what you were asking?
Your missing needles, are probably on a project you started and you put it aside to come back later and you have not done so yet.😃
I really enjoy your content, but I wish you would prepare a little better beforehand. “I don’t remember, I can’t find the ball band, maybe I did this last year, I don’t have a good answer........”. Had to resist clicking out.
people arent just a source of information. Its kind and nice that people share at all when they get unpleasant feedback
