Hi Amber, I haven’t watched any podcasts for awhile as I was at the hospital for my husband and he passed away 3 weeks ago.
I also sold my home of 37 years moved while he was in the hospital, so much stress at one time.
I keep myself very busy but I decided to go turn on UA-cam and you popped up, a bit of normalcy.. I so appreciate your efforts to make a “lovely “ podcast. You are my most favorite. In "ancient times" when I knitted sweaters in pieces I always crocheted it together, using slip stitches. It's much faster then sewing.
Mattress stitch is the most professional way to seam a garment. It's quite easy, and the results are 👌. It's another of the magical things that happens in knitting, like turning a heel or blocking lace!
The Towards North hat is a good colour and the double brim is so necessary. The colour work of the hot water bottle makes this item
I love the the socks. The Gloam cardigan is big and you can crochet the parts together ❤😊🎉🎉

I prefer the mattress stitch because it makes the seam almost invisible. I start up the seam about an inch leaving a tail then stitch it back to the edge. I can't wait for vlogmas. I enjoy all the things that your family does together.

I always enjoy people’s Vlogmass videos as it gives us a peak of every day life and traditions in their part of the world. It is always interesting to see the different things people do at this time of year but it can also be surprising how similar we are wherever we live in the world. Looking forward to seeing some of the Pennsylvanian countryside too 😊
Your podccast are so nice. I really enjoy them. My daughters family is on their way to Pittsburgh right now. A cousin of my son in laws is getting married tomorrow. ❤w😂e are now getting snow and it is sticking. I'm knitting a sweater for my oldest granddaughters birthday present. She will be 6 next week. Hi Amber, I think Mattress stitch is a game changer for seaming garments- it gives a great invisible seam. Most of my knitted garments are pieced and mattress stitch makes finishing them rewarding. 😊
Re Vlogmas- it’s a tricky one that I’ve been wrestling with too- do what you need to do and I will enjoy watching your episodes in any format as I always do! ❤

For the best seams, use mattress stitch every time, it has absolutely changed my views on seaming and I love to see how neat and invisible it is. Definitely makes me happy with my finishing now.

Loved the episode and I re-watched it and realized the water bottle warmer pattern is out so I bought that. I’ve just started dipping my toes into the colorwork world and thought that would be the perfect project. Plus, I bought a water bottle cover for the first time last winter and love it and want a cute cover for it. We have snow here in MI so I’m in full blown Christmas mode; went to our first party last night. Love your Vlogmas, too. Jesus is the reason for the season!
Hi Amber! I really enjoyed listening to this podcast today! Thank you! I wanted to susggest the 1898 hat by Kristine Byrnes for a hat that really covers your ears and stays put. I have made several including some for my grandchildren and one for my sister-in-law who is an avid winter sportswoman. My sil loves this hat. I modify by doing the earflap portion in stockinette rather than garter. This gets folded in half so you get the double layer you like so much. Then you pick up stitches and knit the rest of the hat up to the crown. Here again, I sometimes modify by using the bankhead pattern, etc. Whatever works with my stitch count. Here I am telling you this but I have yet to make my own...LOL!

I’ve only used back stitch as that was the way I was taught many years ago ! I’ve only knit a jumper in the round fairly recently. I believe it gives more structure and the small ‘ bump ‘ inside soon flattens with wear.

Mattress stitch or back stitch. Fruity knitting uses the back stitch and she explains why she likes it better than mattress stitch. Great show Amber. Love how your cardigan is turning out.

Mattress stitch is good but I like what Andrea from Fruity Knitting does and that is a regular backstitch. It sturdy and stable.

I use the mattress stitch for seaming. Love the hot water bottle cover, I really want to make one. I bought the Patons Mid-Century Stripes colorway after seeing your first pair of finished socks, I really love this colorway.

I always use mattress stitch which is invisible! Except for garter stitch knitting. I needed help with that from my Lys.
I live in coastal NC. Nearest city is Raleigh but it is a three hour drive. Then when I get there, I have no idea what to do with myself.
I hate sewing pieces together and finally made the change to knitting in-the-round garments this year as a result. I will never go back now! Having said that, the best way to sew knitting together is using mattress stitch because it is so neat. I'm very much looking forward to your Vlogmas episodes xx

I like the way mattress stitch looks in knitting. Whip stitch is nice too but I tend to use that more in crochet. Good luck! The sweater looks beautiful!❤

To seam sweater/cardigan I love to use the mattress stitch. I find videos by Suzanne Bryan are very helpful to do so. She explains how to seam various sections- straight, curved and slanting

Thanks for another fabulous episode! I'll be watching for the seaming recommendations as I've got a Gloam all ready and kitted up in a project bag. But it will have to wait. 2024 is going to be all about colorwork for me.
Mattress stitch seems to be the best way to seam a sweater. That is what most people have recommended.
I see many have said this already but I agree that mattress stitch is great and is my favorite. The stitches match up nicely and it looks professionally finished to me if done in mattress stitch. That is for the sides. For the shoulders, I do more of a kitchener stitch. I connect the “v” from one shoulder to the stitch on the shoulder on the back that matches up best. Hope that helps?

OMG...I never expected a mini nturtleneck covering for your hot water bottle. When you held it up I let out a guffaw (that's the only way to describe it) Thank you for getting me off to a bright start on this cold gloomy morning ❤ As far as Vlogmas videos perhaps a short "Vlogmas Unfiltered" could work for your busy days😊

I went into Walmart looking for hot water bottles. I couldn’t find any so I asked at the pharmacy. The young lady had no clue what I was asking for so she asked the pharmacist and he gave me a weird look like I wasn’t speaking English and I said “you know, they look like an enema bottle”. Still got nothing. 🤷♀️😂😂😂 ❄️❄️❄️🎄
Funny but I’m knitting the towards north hat while watching, so I’m taking your example of your making the brim thicker. I finished 2 Guthrie hats first time using 2 handed method, which made knitting so much easier. I’m on a hat binge while figuring out what shawl to knit.
I'm so glad I decided to double the brim! I will definitely wear it so much more!

I love the hot water bottle cover! I made 10 last year 8 were gifts & 2 for myself. My granddaughters have used theirs all year (monthly) and say it’s helps so much with their discomfort, so I’m glad my knitting projects can also help them 💕

I’ve got a week off work and I’m enjoying every single minute doing the minimum amount of housework and boring jobs and lots of knitting and fun things. Really looking forward to Vlog mass. Seaming sweaters/cardigans which are knitted in pieces.I always sew the shoulders first;
set the top of sleeves in
and than you have the cuff to armhole and down the side of the sweater ❤
Do you use a certain type of stitch when you are sewing the pieces together?
I do not have the stitch name. Bit like machine sewing.. it's not a mattress stitch but it would work
@alovelyyarn I just googled mattress stitch, which is what I use. Sorry about the confusion. I own a Linker which I use to sew 4ply garmets . Creates chain stitch x
Mattress stitch is definitely the way to go on your cardigan. While, I agree with you that I don’t enjoy seaming, I do enjoy having seamed garments. You can’t beat the structure, especially in a cardigan. Love your color choice for it. Looking forward to your Vlogmas!

Seaming came easier to me after watching Cheryl Brunette videos. My seams are invisible!
I think that's a great way to look at posting for vlogmas because it gives us who watch multiple vlogs a chance to catch up and not be on our phones all the time.

Hello! Lily and I really enjoy our membership during the winter months. That's why I get it. It's nice to have a green, bright, warm place to go to during the dead of winter. We just go walk around or sit there and take in all of the green!

Mattress stitch looks so good when other people do it, but I need more practice, because it never turns out for me. I love taking both legs of the selvage stitch and then both legs of the other selvage stitch and doing a 3 needle bind off essentially. (I'm also partial to the pretty seam it leaves on the inside.

I always do a long tail cast on for socks, but that probably wouldn't be a good one for knee high socks!
I honestly don't like seaming!! I will put it off until the last possible minute. 🤷🏻♀️
Only use mattress or a whip stitch, it really depends on the item.
I've never understood why some knitters get in an uproar over a purchased sweater, LOVE hand knit sweater, but honestly, they're usually too warm for me, a lightweight purchased sweater can be perfect....not to mention, a lot are very pretty!!
I usually make & gift cardigans, rarely wear them. 😊
I'm getting a bit of FOMO with everyone showing off Xmas advents, I promised myself none this year because I got a Halloween one (It was absolutely adorable, the yarns are fluorescent!! AND she included a mini blacklight!!)

I have a question: you talk about knitting in the church. Is that during the actual church service, or when you get together with people in the church to talk about your believes etc? I can't imagine taking my knitting to church, I think it would not be appreciated by the other people in church (they would probably think I'm not really interested in what the reverend is telling us).
I actually knit during the sermon. But only socks that are stockinette so there is no thinking about what I'm supposed to be doing with my knitting. I used to worry about what people thought, but I mostly got over that. I listen better when my hands are knitting.
I prefer a crochet slip stitch seam. It's quicker, and easier to take out if you find your tension is off. There are some video tutorials on the web. :)

I actually think slip stitching with crochet hook is neater and easier.
