Please Wear a Helmet When You Ride a Bike

- Riding on Montezuma from Collwood to Fairmount, I'm along with a guy riding an ebike without a helmet. A piece of wood in the dark took me down on this stretch last year, and it was pretty bad. I didn't tell this guy to wear a helmet when we were riding, so I'm telling him and all of you now.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks for watching.
These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalitio...) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulates...)
Glad to see you're still riding after that crash a year ago. I could see if you both of you stopped at the same spot you would be telling him that you fell on that stretch of road because of debris in the bike lane and that your helmet saved your life. Could get him to reconsider.
Yeah. We didn't get to share that space. A year later, I'm back to riding, and pretty comfortably most of the time. But I don't take this hill at night anymore, either taking the bus on the whole commute or riding to SDSU, then the 115 or 215 the rest of the way.
A small note if i may, the frame is a very small part of a car, usually at the bottom of a vehicle, I think you meant to say the car body/shell that surrounds you. But Helmets sure save lives. 😊
When I refer to the frame, I mean the thing around the picture of the last car that will one day hang in a museum.
I never go without a helmet anymore, the risk is just too high here in the US. I don't trust drivers with my life, and I don't trust road engineers and the city to keep me safe.
Can I recommend a full face, off road style helmet? The advantages are huge, not least that drivers no longer think that face you are making is directed at them. I have also never worn a more comfortable helmet. They fit right, the first time.
Respectfully, while I wore those when I rode motorcycles and Vespas, I'm not wearing a full-face helmet on my bicycle. It would limit my peripheral vision, and be more cumbersome than I'd like it to be on my rides. The helmets I wear from Thousand are plenty of protection.
It's a horrible road/bike lane.
This is true.
Yes, but the government isn’t going to build anything better, so it’s better than nothing and no access.
I usually wear a beanie or ushanka or baseball cap depending on the weather. A helmet is definitely wise though, and you definitely make me realise the wisdom with how bad that crack on the helmet is.
Around the neighborhood, I understand the point of view that a helmet will not protect us if we're hit by drivers' cars. But when we start getting into downhills, it's not about the drivers. There are a lot of things in unprotected bike lanes that can take us down, and mess us up.
I've gotten into a few falls, broke a kneecap and even a car overtaking by the right hit me and I keep telling people "you'll survive losing an arm or a leg since you got two of each, but head you only got one, so wear a helmet even when riding close by".
I wear a skate helmet. After crashing in a bike helmet, I wanted a little more protection for the back of my head. Now I'm looking at picking up a BMX helmet for the visor after watching a kid at the park do a face plant.
Yeah, I’ve wanted a bike helmet with a chin guard just in case of a face plant. Aside from the costs of facial/dental surgery and potential permanent disfigurement, the healing process is surely quite painful.
Just so you know, skate helmets are designed for multiple but LOWER impact crashes than bike helmets. You should definitely be wearing a bike helmet on your bike. And if you ride an ebike you should get one that is NTA-8776 certified.
I wear a helmet, however, research shows they make you LESS safe. It’s the motorists that should be wearing them, not the cyclists.
@danddietz Cool story. Like I said, if I wasn't wearing a helmet, I'd likely be dead. I riding in the only bike lane that exists going in this direction in the city. We're doing the best we can with dangerous drivers, cars, and weak infrastructure.
No!
Are you saying "No!" to wearing a helmet? On a ride like this? I guess it's okay if you feel that way, @Velocipedium, but I'm also telling you that if I wasn't wearing one on this specific place a year ago, I'd be either dead or severely disabled.
I ride without a helmet all the time. I know it's not a wise choice but ther it is. I grew up in the 70's riding a sting ray. Helmets weren't a thing then.
I get it, man. I used to ride in the 80s without a helmet. Sounds like we were both pretty lucky!
In the 2020s, cars are taller, heavier, with drivers who are more distracted. Personally, I'm also riding longer distances on some very fast moving roads, so I've adapted.
I also need a place to mount the camera...
Helmets don’t prevent crashes. In fact they might promote risky behavior that causes them. Blonde wigs, however, reduce crashes.
@danddietz Nobody is saying helmets prevent crashes. A wig wouldn't have stopped a truck from dropping a piece of wood that created a hazard in the bike lane. There's no need to be pedantic.
But people riding on pristine wide/smooth/flat dedicated bike paths in the netherlands where everyone's going less than 8 mph don't wear helmets and they're perfectly safe so why should anyone have to wear a helmet when going 30mph down a 4 lane stroad in the us? (/s obviously)
Ummm I doubt he feels the need to hear your opinion on bike helmets. You're assuming he is just too stupid to have ever heard that you should wear a bike helmet. That's pretty condescending. Let people make their own choices.
I just crashed yesterday evening at dusk - didn't hit my head but am being kept awake with the pain in my neck. The cause was my illustrious city that decided to put one of those stupid curbs that jut out into the bike lane in order to slow car traffic.
Sharp curb painted white like the 'crosswalk next to it. No florescent paint. If you ride straight in the bike lane you'll hit it dead on. If you do see you are forced into the main driving lane. I can't believe road planners are this indifferent to bikers' safety.
I have ridden past it a hundred times on a my bike and skateboard with 3 or 4 near misses. I knew someday I would be enjoying the scenery and not paying enough attention and would hit it. Tonight was the the night
@jeffa847 I'm sorry to hear you got hurt, and I have no doubt that the poor design of the infrastructure contributed to that. I hope you can take that up with your city.
But I specifically didn't give him my opinion. I opted, instead, to make this video. If you think it's condescending to share my experience of taking a bad fall here, and that a helmet likely saved my life in this very spot, I don't know what to tell you.
I'm not assuming anyone's stupid. I'm assuming that people have a false sense of security that the paint might provide. Be well.
@@RidingBikesinSanDiego In the video you said something close to that you '...didn't get a chance to stop and tell him.....' as the reason you didn't talk to him. Maybe I misinterpreted what you said but I doubt it would have been well-received to be stopped.
I would say that's the equivalent of stopping a smoker and telling them about the dangers of tobacco or pulling a driver over because you notice they don't have their seat belt on.
I wasn't saying there was a problem with sharing your experience in the video.
If we had been at a light together up the hill, waiting together, I might have tried to share my experience with him briefly. I would never flag down another person on a bike to tell them something.
You shouldn't be on a road like that with a damned bicycle anyway!
Just to be clear, I shouldn't be riding a bicycle on the road with a bicycle lane? Okay, kiddo. You might be at the wrong channel.
You passed him on the right while lecturing him about wearing a helmet...hehehe.
You're joking, right? Did you miss the part where I explain his position in the lane?
I would have rang the bell to alert him about my maneuver; dunno if it could be heard in all that motor traffic, though. Kudos for cycling in such dire conditions!
