How We Know We're Back in San Diego on El Cajon Blvd
We're on El Cajon Blvd, and you can tell we're going from the City of La Mesa back into the City of San Diego because the bike lane ends.
If we keep going on ECB, it's less climbing for me for me to get home, but there's also no infrastructure at all, so I turn right onto Montezuma, where bike paint picks up.
El Cajon Blvd needs bike infrastructure. The city knows this.
Thanks for watching.
These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalition.org/) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulatesd.org/)

This Gap in the Bike Lane Frustrates a Driver
Переглядів 2 тис.2 години тому
When we reach the end of the Bike Path along the 125 from Navajo to Grossmont College Dr, we make a left into El Cajon, where there's a major gap in the bike lane. And even though I'm riding where I'm supposed to, and even though I'm moving with the pace of other traffic, a driver leans on his horn. Of course, he's at the red light a half a block away, when we pass him and get back on the bike ...
Getting Passed in the Gap in the Bike Lane on Lake Murray Blvd

Drivers All Over the Bike Lane on Park Blvd

We're on Park Blvd just north of University, a couple of drivers pulling into the bike lane behind us, followed by drivers backed up too far, then a USPS truck, then an Amazon driver putting the truck in the lane even though the curb is wide open, followed by another driver in front of new housing just north of ECB. A section between Lincoln and Polk is closed, hopefully for re-striping, so we'...

      Howard is okay, but if I have the choice heading East, I take ECB or Meade. But this footage is way east, at the border of La Mesa and San Diego, where the only alternative to ECB is down on University, but those are pretty far apart depending on where you're going.

    I’m trying to be empathetic by why not ride on the sidewalk? I know it’s not good sometimes but it looked fine on the stretch of road you were on.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego 6 годин тому

      Glad you asked! Sidewalks aren't safe for a number of reasons: they're often too narrow, especially if people are using them to walk, push strollers, or have dogs with them. They're often uneven, as well. But, most important, is that riding on the sidewalk puts me in a position that makes it more difficult for drivers to see me. On this specific stretch, drivers are pulling in and out of the giant parking lot, and they're looking at the road in front of them, not the sidewalk. Also, I start on a bike path, and to the west behind me, there's a bike lane, and I'm riding to a bike lane. This is a gap. The funniest part is that the driver honking isn't even behind me. At no point am I actually in his way or slowing him down. I'm riding in a place that's perfectly safe as long as drivers can control themselves. If they can't, maybe they shouldn't be driving.

    Cities often won't cooperate on bike and pedestrian infrastructure, leaving terrible gaps. And near highways and interstates, they leave it to state DOTs, whose only motivating statistic is car volume - not people volume.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego

      I hope that's changing. At least cities around here have found (I think) that the liability of ignoring people outside of cars is more costly than just making roads safer for everyone.

    • @Lowezar
      @Lowezar 5 годин тому

      @@RidingBikesinSanDiego I would say that's debatable. It just gives you a false sense of security, flase "this part of the road is mine" which could be more dangerous in some circumstances. But even if it helps, as Not Just Bikes says "paint is NOT infrastructure".

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego 4 години тому

      @Lowezar I understand, and agree it's debatable. I'd argue that even though paint is not protection (which I repeat on this channel often), dedicated space on the road is safer than nothing at all. Yes, I want real infrastructure. But it's an exhausting wall to beat our heads against. For this video, for this single block of Navajo, I'd argue that we need something instead of nothing, and this driver's temper, I think, supports that argument. Whatever that something that goes in would be, I'd hope it could be protected with a physical barrier.

    "This took months?" What do you expect? Overnight building? And why are you only able to drive on the right side of the road when there is some white paint? • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego 7 годин тому

      When I say "months," I mean like 8. When the municipality tears up a corner, they should be able to fix it faster than that. As for road position (since you asked), I can ride in a bike lane when there's a bike lane. When there's not a bike lane, it's much more dangerous to hug the curb when riding because drivers pass too closely because there's no visual barrier to help drivers gauge the space they're taking up. If this triggers you, you might be at the wrong channel. Consider taking a break from UA-cam, and head down to the DMV to surrender your license. Thanks for watching!

And I don't actually believe for a moment that you ride a bicycle. If you did, I'd hope you would advocate for these networks to be completed. @@RidingBikesinSanDiego I would complain about the number of lanes: but my municipality is in the process of widening Fort Road to 6 lanes all along it's length. There is a planned parallel separated bike path for most of it: except for a 1 block section in front of land set aside for Transit oriented development. The 1 (one) building that actually got built is too close to the road to permit a bike path. Hopefully they will make access to the bike path parallel to the rail line to the south less awkward. Heck even strategic fence holes may be all that are needed (official or not).

      @jamesphillips2285 Thanks for sharing the experience where you live! "One more lane will fix it" is a lie traffic engineers tell themselves and cities all the time. I'd have to look back at the history of this area, but I think Fletcher Parkway (and Navajo and Mission Gorge for that matter) got that way because they pre-date the construction of the 125. It would be nice if when major expressways were built, other roads were right-sized in response. Turns out, people like living in places where they can also work and have fun without having to rely on driving.

    Not a cyclist, just a driver who cares about everyone's safety. The lack of infrastructure in this country, and inconsistency of what infrastructure there is really does feel like a lose-lose. I live in a rural part of Northern California and quite often I'll see cyclists on my commute during the summer. I live off a winding shoulderless road where you often cant see whats around the corner, making passing cyclists very dangerous. I am annoyed at the county for the lack of proper infrastructure but the way other drivers behave VERY upsetting. They'll often get aggressive with the cyclist, getting dangerously close to try and push them to go faster. I've seen people throw stuff at and harass cyclists and have heard of people getting run off the road. I will never understand getting upset at cyclists, they're just people trying to get where they need to go like everyone else. Watching people get upset with cyclists, and those same people pushing back against alternative forms of transportation, such as bikes, seems so paradoxical to me.

      I don't think that Navajo needs to lose a travel lane here; there's a lot of space to put painted or buffered bike lane from the 125 to Fletcher Parkway. But I also don't think that this road needs to be as wide with lanes as it is. And riding south through Encinitas is a lovely ride, and a lot of people on bikes are using it daily.

When a car allows us both to obey traffic regulations, I give them a heart-love thump and a thumbs up and the universal OK sign. When a car pauses and beckons me to cross or turn, I do all of those. Bike is traffic. When there is no bike lane, bike can take up the whole lane. That's the law. Now, whether that is dangerous is another question.

  • @sdsk8rboi
    @sdsk8rboi 7 днів тому

    What you encountered was incredibly typical. It's rare that I can go the full distance from University to Meade without needing to take the lane for at least a portion of that distance. There need to be hard barriers for the parking protected bike lanes so that parked cars don't encroach on the bike lane. That's an issue north of Meade too.

    San Diego's inability to competently manage any transport projects (even for cars!) is why I left. There is no vision, no parking, and no alternatives.

    I work at the building on your left (a large unmarked white building) when you stopped at the Taylor & Sunset light. I am also an avid cyclist and ride my bike often after work during summer's long days. I see a lot of cyclists ( especially big group rides on Thursday mornings) from my office window traveling down Tayor to Pacific Highway without any protection from cars in the form of a lane or curb. I would love a bike lane on Taylor Street as I, myself take it to Pacific Highway make that right, ride for a few miles then back to work to let traffic filter out before I head home. Great Video, hope this gets some traction.

    Intersections like this are too complex. I'm pretty sure most drivers are making errors rather than intentionally disregarding those signs. It would be so funny if every single cyclist in the city stopped at every single stop sign (and I mean stop and put a foot down before proceeding) for one full day. Bet we would hear a different tune from drivers then! LOL. Bikes yielding at stops is better for drivers and safer for cyclists because it harmonizes traffic flow.

  • @TheMarkw758
    @TheMarkw758 12 днів тому

    Drivers should use the bike lane to turn right. This avoids the dreaded right hook. The lane is dashed indicating that cars can cross at that point to make a right turn. One might argue that there is too long of a dashed line, but that is not the fault of the driver, but rather the traffic engineers. What the driver did was legal and he was not harassing you as he did not cut you off.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego 11 днів тому

      It wasn't a close cut, but this driver did cut in front of me, then almost came to a full stop. As someone else said, they saved themselves a whole few seconds.

    Is there a provision in the City code that allows drivers to make such use of the bike lane? Or does that Police Officer you rode past simply not care? I'm in Lake Havasu AZ, not San Diego so I don't know the codes there. Here, it is expressly forbidden though ironically we don't even have bike lanes. We can't expect every single road user to know and remember every law, but if those tasked with educating and enforcing the laws don't make the effort then we can't make any headway.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego

    That person saved what, 10 seconds by cutting in front of you? Not only what that driver did was annoying, but it's also dangerous. The California Driver's Handbook states: -It is illegal to drive in a bicycle lane unless you are: Turning (within 200 feet of an intersection). -Watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists between your vehicle and the curb. -Respect the right-of-way of any vehicle, bicyclist, or motorcyclist already in the lane. It's a simple rule: Don't drive in the bike lane and especially don't do it if someone is in the bike lane.

    • @swlightn
      @swlightn 13 днів тому

      BTW, bike lane line is broken here. So, entering the bike lane is permitted. But, this driver should follow a cyclist instead of passing and blocking. We saw this behavior a lot, right? As a cyclist, I'm always expecting this situation to avoid an accident.
