I saw "Dark Souls 3 Lore Explained", then looked at the length of the video and laughed.

I also love the cool detail pointed out by Vaati about how every lord of cinder boss fight (except Lothric) has a second phase where they use fire

The Unkindled and the Lords of Cinder aren't resurrected at the same time. In the first boss arena, you can clearly see a very large vary old tree growing out of Yorm's empty tomb. The Prince was plan A, The Old Lords were plan B and The Unkindled were plan C.
SO it was confirmed a while back "Unkindled" according to the creator, ARE people who kindled the fire but wasn't strong enough to keep it aflame which then you burned out to ash.
1. The reason the bell wakes you, is that it wakes all people who lit the flame. Even tho the bell is to wake the lord of cinders, you too were someone who lite the flame, only difference is that you were too weak and turned to ashe in the process.
2. Item description of the Soul of the lord of Cinder at the final boss says that everyone who lights the flame, their souls all are fused together as a guardian of the final flame. So even tho you couldn't keep the flame lite long, you still end up offering your soul to the guardian/ final boss.
3.Which is why a certain character is trying to give you a dark sigial, he's giving you a soul which is giving you a possibility TO hollow (reason you're immune to hollowing effects, you have no soul). It makes sense they're doing this to the unkindled because there aren't anymore chosen undeads that can continue to keep a sain mind while being hallow. So you reuse someone who had the power to be able to.
4. The world isn't turning into darkness. If the world was turned to darkness, there would only be hollowed humans/creatures.But in the game, hallows are turning into trees, giants are turning into trees, wyverns and demons are turning back into ashe, even the second oldest fire in the game (the one that witch created in DS1) is dying. Everything isn't going to darkness, everything is going into the "Gray" area which was before DS1, the area with no light and dark, no heat and cold, just gray.
5. What about the dragons? Majority of everlasting dragons died in DS1, in DS2 all those dragons are "man made" dragons using the souls of the giants (kinda like golems) and in DS3, you only see wyverns which humans call dragons because they never seen a REAL dragon cos they're all dead. Even the game in DS3 calls it that when fighting a giant dragon boss.
It must be the old fire keeper of firelink shrine who rang the bell since you find her corpse in the bell tower over firelink, and with a new fire keeper comes a new age of fire (a new cycle)

There is a lot of mistakes here. The unkindled is also called the chosen ash or the ashen one because in the past you were an undead who tried to link the fire but failed and thus became ashe

I THINK; You play as ash, implying that you attempted to link the flame, and failed. Perhaps this is why you are in a shallow unmarked grave, maybe Gundyr is the one who put you there.
The first bell to tone is always the bell of awakening, and then the bell of atonement. You awaken to the sound of the first bell, rung by Anri of Astora, the chosen undead, which is why your paths are inevitably linked, even in death. Anri is an idea for the first game based off "what if the player failed, what if they gave up, and a different creature had to step in to fit the bill.
The Ashen one, unfit even to be embers. The one who failed to link the fire before.
But now, with the accursed undead with him, Ash seeketh embers.
The Ashen one is the player from the first game, and Anri is a representation of what it means to lose your drive along the way. To become hollow, to go mad, and to give up.

I'll wait to the DLC to formulate my final hypothesis. But I am leaning towards a two world theory. Where in there is two different worlds in the world of Dark Souls. One has Dranglaeic the other Lordran. And the Abyss is like the sea separating both worlds. I believe that in Dark Souls 3 your character is the ancestor of dark souls 2 character who is the ancestor of dark souls 1 character. A direct line where each sequel adds the benefit of each one. After reigniting the fire or letting it die the ancestor of that character lived in a world that has its fire reignited by a brave lord most likely Yhorm the giant. Then during that era is when Dark Souls 2 happens when the Abyss Watchers start their gathering of souls to link the fire again. But the protagonist when to the other world to find a cure for the undead. He finds it in the crowns a symbol of power for the kings of ages past with that he no longer hollows as he wears the crown. That allows his descendants not to be corrupted by the abyss or turned undead which I believe is linked. Returning after starting their version of the fire or letting it go out again to continue his line. Once done we go to the recent lord Aldrich who linked the fire and was laid to rest. However the prince did not wish to link the fire so the Fire keeper sent the Unkindled a descendant immune to the undeads curse to kill all the lords of cinder and collect there remains to restart the fire.

The timeline goes Age of Ancients>Age of Fire>Fire starts dying>Age of Fire.
Now Gywn went all pew pew pew against the Dragons in the AoA, and then sets himself alight when the Age of Fire started to end, and then some time later, the CHOSEN UNDEAD(Not the bearer of the curse), rolls up and does what Gywn did. You see the problem with your hypothesis? You think that DS3 takes place before DS. Your timeline says that the games go DS3>DS2>DS instead of DS>DS2>DS3.
Also the crown doesn't make you immune to the Abyss. Nothing supports that idea. The only thing that MIGHT be immune to the abyss would be a human(and the only human we saw immune to it was the Chosen Undead who some people believe is the descendant of the Furtive Pygmy who is believed to be Manus himself(while the rest got turned into monsters from humanity running wild) ). Not to mention the Abyss never existed until the toothy Serpent convinced the torture of Manus that drove him insane. Therefor the Abyss isn't some "world" divider. It's humanity/dark gone wild.
Soul of the Firekeeper you find on the bell tower describes that she was the firekeeper who returned from the abyss, and brought great comfort to those who bear the curse. And when you give the soul to our waifu, she can offer an option to cure dark sigil.
This clearly has something to do with why we don't hollow anymore. Someone had probably found a way to cure undead curse. Although it is unclear what she brought back from the Abyss, and why player and other unkindled are the only undead that don't hollow (Since there's Undead Settlement, meaning some don't get the cure)

The phrase "Ash seeketh embers," clearly refers to our character, since the Fire Keeper refers to you as "Ashen One" and you are seeking Cinder. The full quote says, "The Unkindled will rise: Nameless, accursed undead; unfit even to be Cinder. And so it is that ash seeketh embers."
I expected this to be worse, but it was alright. Although regarding the unkindled, Miyazaki personally explained what they are. They're past undead who were unfit to link the fire and became ash, which is why they're awoken at the bell's toll for a second chance.

The prince of Lothric did link the flame hence why you need his cinder back on its throne to get to the kiln of the first flame. The ritual the fire keeper performs takes the previous five lords and uses their ash to send one who is recognized as worthy of linking the flame to the kiln. It's mentioned in the first souls game that the age of man came with darkness and Gwynn fearing both linked the flame to essentially stop time and keep the age of fire going. I'm pretty sure that out of keeping the flame linked, men becomes curse because they are of darkness. It's why the dark sign is a pitch black whole almost the abyss that comes from deep within man. When the time comes for the fire to truly die out the age of man which is darkness will truly take place.

You can't remember the name of someone who's forgotten, and you sure as hell aren't fit to be cinder if you're the furtive pygmy.
As we know, the furtive pygmy split his soul into humanity and didn't take it for themselves... leaving them without a soul..... meaning they wouldn't be able to hollow. Meaning *mind blown*
The bell that rings at the beginning of DS3, woke up all those who've linked the fire, who (I would assume) have had a lord soul at one point. Furtive pygmy did have a lord soul at one point as well, we'll just call it "the dark soul", but again he deiced to share instead of being a greedy jerk.

The writers and directors threw a bunch of cool names into a bag, picked them out one by one and tried to make a coherent story line. They don't even know what they created.

You have some very good points in this video but it seems to me you forgot some important things. Your theory with the Unkindled having no soul is pretty good, but remember in DkS1, souless beings were in fact Hollows. The "curse" is just humans going back to their very first form. Moreover, the Flame needs soul to be linked. And so, if we can link it, we have a soul.
The Lothric Princes are already called Lords of Cinder, but to be called that, you have to link the Flame at least once (the first one who got this title was Gwyn, but only after giving his soul to the Flame). So IMO, they did link the fire in the past, but maybe after being resurected they just realize that fighting the Dark is futile and just don't want to re-link the Flame.
I recommend everyone to search some theories on DkS1 too : you say that we don't go hollow beacause we're the Chosen Undead, but that may not be true at all. I mean, at the end of the game (spoiler ?), if you choose the dark ending you become the "dark lord". But in Dark Souls 2, you realize that your choice didn't have any kind of consequence since the Fire seems to have been linked several times. The best comparison is King Vendrik : he defeated 4 powerfull beings and got their Souls. At this point he IS the "Chosen Undead" He chose ('cause of Nashandra) not to link the Fire, and what happened ? He hollowed, all the souls he collected disapeared and found new hosts. Then your character appears and you can link the fire if you want to. Conclusion ? Being the Chosen Undead does not make you curse-resistant. You can read some very interesting theories with very good points where people explain (through items descritpion, dialogues...) that the "chosen undead" might just be a lie created by important characters (Frampt and such) to make you link the Flame no matter what. We already know that you never become dark lord either in DkS1 if you choose to not link the fire, and that you were manipulated by Kaathe the Primordial Serpent.

+Joel Wissing They essentially explained how the flame, the thing that keeps evil and the kingdoms in the dark souls series somewhat alive and subsequently told you why your character in DS3 is just a undead being that seeks it's own flame. Because unlike the kindled like the watchers, yhorm, etc.. THEY have their own flames while US (The Player) have NONE and seek our own flames to be kindled. It's suspected our character is a previous lord of cinder because no undead would seek their own flames.
in undead settlement why does the undead burn more dead things (corpse)?

Lore Twist: The world where you fight most mobs isn't connect to the firelink shrine where you deposit the lords of cinder on their thrones. You HAVe to take the warp to those lands, and then you can run through all levels without warping. Interestingly that same 'seamless' world, does in fact have its own firelink shrine; its dark, but its there behind the consumed king. So my question is are we pilfering that worlds' lords of cinder to restart the fire in the 'populated' firelink shrines world?

It's not explained very well, but we bascially become the Lord of Hollows to bring Londor back to it's former glory. You're basically becoming the king of the Hollows and being Kaath's puppet again (Yuria mentions that she's serving Kaath when you kill her). You're giving the Hollows new meaning and usurping the first flame, which would grant somebody immense power, for Londor.

I think linking the fire is a bad thing. Dunno much about the other lords of cinder but if Lothric doesn't want it and bad things happened to that kind giant Yhorm, then its probably not a good idea to link that fire anymore.

You don't hollow in 3 because, while the curse hasn't been lifted its effects(hollowing) were mitigated in ds2 when u put the crown back together and the dark sign was removed. That's how u hollow in three by seeking out a dark sign or 8

incorrect, the opening cinematic says that the lords of cinders will rise to rekindled the flame and but should they abandon their thrones it says, "then the unkindled will rise." thus we did not wake as the lords did. we awoke much later, how long is not stated but we do know were not their first choice since there are many npc's that state that they too are unkindled thus we are just the most recent in a line of random undead summoned to gather the lords of cinder. based on what we've seen from the existing unkindled it is likely that the first all seem to have some link to the lords of cinder. since each of their storylines end up leading back to one of the bosses but were are raised after there choice are called upon first.
+Polex411 This is probably the more correct interpretation. I think that Iudex/Champion Gundyr exists to test the Unkindled before they reach firelink. The player could be any number of unkindled, the ones before them being unfit to return the lords to their thrones, as they failed to pass gundyr.
true, but either way were are not raised at the same time as the lords of Cinder. that was the point of my comment.
Personally, I thought the lords chosen were those who were the weakest to link the flame rather than the most recent. Aldrich didn't want to be a lord and was basically made one by everyone around him, he wanted the dark to come and weaken gods so that he could devour them. Yhorm the giant was a giant, not a human, and since the fire is fueled by humanity his efforts were wasted and potentially what lead his civilization to ruin (I believe the backlash from using a giant soul was what destroyed his kingdom alongside the profaned flame. The witch of Izaleth shoes that you shouldn't mess with the flame). We know the prince left by choice so his linking was never done, and Ludleth is so mysterious and seemingly weak that he either had alternative motives for the flame that lead to his present state, or he was some kind of monster that the flame couldn't devour fully, similar to Yhorm. The Abyss Watchers to me had the right idea, they gathered a legion to burn, something that sounds like it could make the age of fire last for potentially a millennium or more, however because their power came from normal undead who gained power from the wolfs blood, their sacrifice was in vain as the fire burned their blood rather than them, turning what would have been a millennium into something much shorter. That's just my thought at least.

I really dont think thats how hollowing and the unkindled are meant to be meant to be justified. It's definitely not caused by a lack of a personal soul because before hollows were the natural state of humans before the souls were discovered in the flame. Hollowing isn't tied exclusively to a soul either. One of the main things hollows lack is purpose which is why when you "help" someone in just about any dark souls quest, they go mad at the end because they don't have anything else to strive towards. In Dark 3, unlike the other games, you have a pretty clear purpose from the beginning and that goal gets reinforced by everyone you meet which keeps the unkindled from hollowing normally. Humanity is also tied directly to darkness and the dark soul (hence the name of the game) so whenever you visit the firekeeper and "touch the darkness within her" you have a constant supply of darkness (i.e. black humanity sprites from ds1) while the dark sigil of the hollowing quest is described as a "gaping hole" that might be letting the darkness out in a way.
I'm not saying this is the worst thing ever, but people should probably just let Vaati handle the lore..

RedSoakedSponge But they are not full, edited videos explaining and breaking down the story as a whole, like all of his previous stuff... The "lore" videos you are referring to are basically lets play videos by someone that is well informed on the story.
I think the opening cinematic was misinterpreted here. The lords are awoken by the bell ringing. However, in waking up, all of them see what their homes became after their departure:
For the Farron Legion, they return to Farron and see that it has become a poisonous swamp and that the forces of Londor (Darkwraiths) are already deep into it. The only forces of Farron left are the two Exiles and Hawkwood, left behind to protect the land but having clearly failed. This explains the exile and Hawkwood's deserting. In seeing this, the Legion goes mad, their sanity already affected by their long years of Death.
For Yhorm, he returns to the Capital, having now turned into the Profaned Capital. The humans accepted the Lordship of the Giant because it meant none of their own were going to be sacrificed and humans didn't care much for giants anyway. However, this human mentality punished the people of the Capital as, instead of Yhorm's sacrifice being a way to stop the advance of the profaned flame, it instead fueled it, destroying the Capital and burning everyone in it. Yhorm sees this and with grief and rage, abandons his duty, seeing as he once again failed to protect the ones he was sworn to.
Finally, Aldrich was always prone to dark thoughts and in seeing the other Lords leave their thrones, he does too, as he sees that there is no hope for the Age of Fire.
Therefore, I believe that the waking bell rings TWICE. Once to awaken the Lords who are expected to bring Lothric to his throne. Then much later, a second time to awake the unkindled (the player) as he is now the only one who can link the fire seeing as the Lords have given up their duties.

In Dark Souls 1 You need to link The flame by killing The only Lord of Cinder:Gwyn (which want somebody Who is up to The task of being the next lord of cinder.)But...you've failed?But still you took his place.Maybe that's why the bell woke you up...(That's all supposition from my playtrough of DS1.I can't tell if I'm right or wrong about that part of the lore.)
Heres why I disagree. The statement "What if our characters don't have souls to start with," just doesn't make sense because only the ones WITH souls, can keep the fire up by spending their soul until their soul is depleted which why prince Lothric is avoiding to link the fire because the ones that link the fire is destined to fade away with the fire, which is why in lore they eventually need a new character to link the fire.
Also when you follow the specific "hollow" quest line as you mentioned, you unlock the path for different ending of the game, which would not make sense if your theory was true, because hollowing (a curse eating away at your soul) would be IMPOSSIBLE without soul, in which case it will consequently make the whole story line a contradiction.
Another thing is that, the whole game REVOLVES around souls. Whether it is achieved or one in possession from start, you can all turn it into part of you and your strength, and actually was a big part of story of DS2.
Try harder next time IGN.
i think youre a god without a soul (light soul that is) and so the line "unfit even to be cinder" would make sense as you need humanity for that. "so ash seeketh ember" would also support that as you seek the light souls from the Lords of Cinder (basically this would mean that for the 1st time in the series, you arent a progenitor of the dark souls). the usurper ending would have you turn your body hollow through the dark vigil sign and become a vessel for a dark soul (Anri). upon doing so, your body has now become a bonefire. you then NOT link the fire but REPLACE the 1st flame (not really as you are still missing the life soul and death soul) but this ending signifies that 2 cycles have ended. light soul rekindling the fire and the dark soul splitting. you are now what Gwyn is before he rekindled the 1st flame AND the pygmy before he started spreading. As the 1st flame, you will then be able to take thr life and death soul and whatever comes after will be a new age. hence the end of the series as it is confirmed that 2 cycles will end whe choosing the usurper path (which was the prophecy in the previous games, i think?)
Completely wrong at the end, we do have a soul. It's been said by many characters in the game that we bear the darksign, and it's even present in our inventory. The Dark Sign is the brand of the undead, and those who are born of the Dark Soul, which is the soul born of fire that all humans share.
you actually only near the dark sign if you follow yoel and yurias quest. when you "draw out your true strength" from yoel, it adds a dark sign (up to five). once you have five, he dies and is replaced by yuria. but you don't stay off with a dark sign and you can get rid of it at the firekeeper one you get the fire keepers soul.

that would be incorrect about our charater doesn't have a soul, because of one thing "invasion" or come down as dark spirit/ blue/ and phantom, they are all the same sit set as souls following spirit and soul.

We awoken from slumber along with the lord of cinder, yet the fire about either burst again or reborn a new anointed king, because of secret ending we get choose be anointed king (it means next king) which no one figure this out why firelink knight is only there, this isn't our character at all, this is from the guy who is from DS1 who gave us the flask and he changed quick as you noticed he link it no matter what even thou our character decied let the fire die, he stood there to keep the fire going. This is why lord of cinder was awaken, why our character awaken because its our job either stop fire, become king, regain our soul from the flame, or either let it finally fade in the world should had ended finally. Lord of cinder does has souls of their own as we remember we got it, but this led confusing matter because of the lore stated there was civilation on the world, which if anyone remeber firelink shrine that is in ruin, yes that is different world, that world is oppiste from the wolrd our character were in, what happen changes that still has left linger of what is left civilation until it turn to hallow. Know this innocent aren't truely innocent, firelink shrine maiden maybe different, she wanted end the fire, and we could be the puppet being played, of course there is other ending we crush her and take the flame from her, yet we don't know she is innocent or not. Maybe she saw herself weak and couldn't end madness so she call on the one who can end it all. Come think about it DS1 and 3 aren't different at all even thou chose are different. Why does firekeeper have to do with this if you ask me, its obvious their job is "Attend to the fire and keep the fire going" that was their job in DS1, but she let the fire die, I don't know we are dealing with smart woman or either truely peace keeper. As for now, I only got fragment what is story could be about, either end the fire again that one last soul of the unknown or either to know who is exactly is that flame soul? Remember 4th flame isn't natural, but was more then one fragment of it as in chaos fire and other chaos. That wasn't only one which firelink shrine had that fire up long time, so it was 5th flame count. As we know the fire is really pose to be gone. yet still strive to live on, great isoulation, is great insanity to become. Check and remember, about maiden firelink shrine, this take resondible of DS1 as we go towards DS3, this is where the wants and DS2 effect of yern for of many undeads. As we know we yern for good old days or either wish for to end finally. This topic a lot idea, what did the undead yern for to their goals.

((this is considering the fact either we are the charecter from dark souls 2 or someone else who came in contact with the dark souls 2 firekeeper after we sat on the throne)) we wake up because your the person from dark souls 2 who sat on the throne, so obviously in the dlc we cured it thats why we hollow, then the npc sort of reignites the ability to hollow, i think the previous firekeeper from dark souls 2 learned the secret to the crown, cured and it could have been her ringing the bell, because was her fate to ring the bell, as her last duty she died up there,(because as dks3 firekeeper says after they have completed there duty the are lead to true darkness and die) leaving her soul that has the ability to once again heal hollowing for you.
one of the endings sort of has a side ending were instead of letting the fire die out in the fire keeper hands you brutally take the flame from her and because the power of the flame is weak it is the embers and we are ash. and I know this because it says this same line from the starting cutsean of the game "ash seekith embers
Everyone badmouthing this lore video, when really it is just a summary, maybe for people who like the game but aren't super interested in the more detailed stories. I like the detailed stories that Vaatividya does, but I also enjoyed this. I have a question though. Does anyone know what gauntlets the player character is wearing during the fire linking cutscene?

what if:
the undead, whom everyone has been calling "human" are not actually humans as we know them.
"humans" were created by the dark soul but the darksoul, and by extension "the dark" is not the opposite of fire, it was found in the first flame, it IS fire. so the Human/undead are no different from gywn or nito
we know the first flame game the hollows in ds1 souls and life and game them the strength to fight dragons,
but what if the fire only acted as an evolution booster, and those things would happened on there own in time.
enter the "unkindled" one who has never been given fire, a human who has been born without aid of the darksoul.
they dont need humanity to be human, because they just are human. which is also why they dont hollow, as hollowing is a breakdown of the soul and return to their original forms. but they do seek flame(which is also was souls are, dont forget), as the ember tells us. this desire for flame makes them perfect for hunting the lords and linking the flame.
through some power they are brought back to life, and with the darksign they are bound to the bonfires, just like the chosen undead, and set on the journey to link the flame.
side note/extra: without fire, light and dark don't exist, so calling a world without fire "dark" doesn't make sense. the dark it a totally separate phenomenon where the power of the darksoul usurps(see what i did there?)power from the power of the lightsoul. a lack of fire would recreate the grey stone world of the dragons, not darkness.
this isnt 100% thought out or fact checked(if thats even possible in souls lore) and im sure there are holes, but so far, this is sounding pretty good to me
Dark souls series is a dynamic game where the real story is an illusion which changes with time.creation was meant to be beautiful but the maker eventually after contemplation became mad over ones own existence...hope the fire enlightens the path of one's purpose of existence
I think whats going on is, the time wants to bring the lords of cinders back. Like, that is that. Because we also rise along with the lords. That maybe one hint. What if we are destined to be a lord of cinder and it was inevitable? And maybe the lords of cinder were prepared for us? IDK. Thats just what I've learned so far. Let me know what you guys think.
+Shadowxgamer 13 In the first two games "chosen undead" were just lies with every single undead going to the firekeep being told they are the only chosen one. The bell also awakens those fit to be lords but it also awakens the player, which after exploring seems like we are the lord of darkness. The series has a underlying plot where cursed/unkindled are tricked into sacrificing themselves to light the fire.
So you can assume that unkindled do not fade like the flame and can be used forever to keep the flame alight. Given the way "worlds" seem to work, no matter if you don't link the flame, another "chosen" will. This is probably the curse Lothric saw, an endless cycle of suffering and denial of rest (death).
The reason the fire faded is through the dark souls 2 sotfs alt ending where you decide to let the fire to fade

The whole lore of Dark Souls can't merely be explained in five minutes. There's a helluva lot more depth to every inch of it. If you wanna see some real good lore videos you should check out VaatiVidya. Damn near my favorite UA-camr ever.
Wotanism is about people who have an undying soul, and they are reincarnated again and again until they reach divinity. That seems more likely to be the thought process between the undying in Dark Souls since this game had many roots in Norse mythology. Yggdrassil, slaying the titans with lightning, etc.

Hmmmm.... So we know from playing the game and reading the item descriptions that in the time since dark souls one thousands of kingdoms have rose and fell. I wonder if the other souls games, demons souls and bloodborne, fit somewhere on the timeline. Is it possible that they could be kingdoms which have happened then died giving the way for a new kingdom to happen?

The bell woke the previous lords of cinder to go after lothric and get him to link the flame but they chose not to so they awoke us an unkindled which means we were to weak to link the flame but we're still consumed by the first flame and turned to ash then we were bured and awoken to go after the lords of cinders to make us powerful enough to defeat lothric and if you state that we are getting ride off the flame that's wrong because in all of the games you could chose to link or leave which means if you don't link the flame (leave) you become the king of men the king of darkness because the dark soul is man kind but still from the ashes of the unlinked first fire embers will always remain awaiting the time to combust and start a new age of fire no matter what. You know any souls sacrificed in the flame through a lord of cinder is forever gone, the only souls that can be revived are the souls of the ones who sacrificed their own and other souls to the flame, hence lord of cinders being revived. for instance grave lord nito is dead forever, his soul was completely absolved into the flame, so if the unkindled had their bodies and souls sacrificed to the first flame to turn into ash they would be forever dead
Just going by the bosses and npc's in the game, also by the multiple firelinks and thrones. Up to now the fires always been linked (In DS1 walking away doesnt count as cannon iguess). When this happens our guys burn up, him and all the souls that make up his strength (the multiple lords possible npc's that have died as cannon? Basically all slain things), but we're all undead so anyone with a strong soul or will or essence just gets reborn or comes back as something similar to what they were. Thats why items are the same but people and bosses can have different names but look alike. Also this has happened so many times we're not flesh and bone just undead ash.(even as ash we still get up iguess). Just my guess at the lore.

If you talk to the people in firelink they tell you that the lords of cinder (all the guys with the thrones) were the first choice to re-link the fire but they abandoned their duty, except for little Ludleth, an unkindled would have to gather their ashes instead to achieve the same results.
Not everyone wants to watch a 30 minute video about lore, since some people just like the game for the gameplay. This video isn't objectively inferior to vaati's, it's just concise.

while I enjoyed the video and for once it was good. the choosen undead wasn't different from another undead. we didn't have any special powers. we just had a purpose and unlike our companions we don't fulfill it until we've defeated Gwyn

I’ve tried dark souls 3, and as someone who doesn’t game often, it’s just too hard for me to bother with. If it had a great story line I might be more enticed into trying over and over again to get to the next part of the story, but it all seems a bit pointless
This is probably going to sound stupid. But what if the main character from Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, and. Dark Souls 3 are all connected or even the same character. Maybe instead of just dying once you rekindled the fire, you simply hibernate or enter a similar state until the fire began to dim again. But maybe after the second time you rekindled the fire, you lost your soul, losing the link with the fire, only to be awakened by the bells of DS3.Or what if Dark Souls 3 happened in between Dark Souls 1 and 2. Stating that originally you walked away leaving the fire to continue to dim.
