I stopped at the window too, dumbfounded by the priorities of the maintenance staff in Anor Londo. There has to be a reason why it is not broken, it wouldn't really change anything if it were still busted. Oh and you can't jump down from Gwyneveres bonfire either, someone build a safety railing there. :D
Nobody mentions how there are no ads throughout this whole video? Vaati does this for us only. That's commendable. Edit: please stop replying about seeing ads I was young and dumb when I made this comment and didn't understand how youtube worked please stop argh
I will join patreon and become a patron of all my favorite channels as soon as patreon becomes more transparent and shows how much they make. Some creators still beg for patrons after getting 5k per video.
Deacons:"Happy birthday Gwyndolin!" Gwyndolin:"Thanks for coming everyone, say uh...where's the cake?" Aldrich:"We're not having cake" Gwyndolin: *"oh no"*
Reading through all the comments now, i've yet to come across any negativity. I'm really glad you guys like it. When you work on a project like this for weeks, you kind of get dulled to whether it's any good. Appreciate the support, wish I could respond to it all. After the move this week i'll do my best to become a video production machine! Lots of new routines to get into. I hope my internet is faster at this new place..I watched this video upload for like 2 days lol Also i've added a few amendments in the description in relation to Yorshka and Gwynevere
awesome videos as always, really sorry to bother you but i have a question that i am to lazy to look up. which ending supposedly ends the cycle. is it the one where you bring darkness to your world but fire comes back (i thought this ment a more calm fire comes back, not so bad as the one currently around) or the one where you steal the fire so it never comes back and humanity has to overcome the darkness themselves like we did in the dark ages. also why does the soul of cinder attack you. is it not apart of gywen. is it suppose to test you. anyways thanks for rhe awesome vids. keep it up
Its amazing dude. You sure dont upload all that often, but when you do its just the best content out there. Well worth the wait. Very, very well done sir.
I've more speculation about the "Pilgrim Butterfly": if you look around the High Wall of Lothric at the beginning of game, you can easily see a very lot of trees where the hollows peoples are praying. All the trees have arms, heads and and are ALL pointed up in direction of the Castle of Lothric. The form of the trees resemble an hollow in the act of fly into the sky and looks really similar the Pilgrim Butterfly's wings as well. May be the trees are the incomplete form of the butterly?
The lyrics to his theme (translation not official but by a fan) also imply that for him both outcomes are a win. Either he kills the profaned flame and proves himself to everyone, or he kills their asses in the process and gets his revenge.
Here's why d3 lore is so crazy. Dark souls 3 was my first souls game, I fought this boss called Aldrich and thought hey it looks way different than what the game intro showed. After completing the game I went on to buy DS1 and DS2. While playing DS1, I fought a boss called Gwyndolin, and instantly realized that hey that guy looks familiar, he looks exactly like Aldrich. After doing some research and watching this video..... I realize Aldrich is actually the black goo.....he was in the process of devouring Gwyndolin. Now that is DARK souls.
it would be a lot crazier if people actually played the series from the first one and then saw how these game develops. i don't understand why most of people who know this series plays the last one first.
man the time and effort it takes to do all this; play the game, read all the info on items, make it sound fluently and the making this video with all the editing, god damb. new sub roight here
Ever since I saw his video I always feel extremely guilty when fighting Wolnir. No one deserved to be devoured by The Abyss, not even worst human beings. But that is just me.
yeah its like dark souls is shit with its storytelling and there are many other ways better than this immersion breaking and tedious medthod of storytelling
I wonder what Aldrich's train of thought was? "I just have a vision of a world of deep sea further down the line, imma eat the gods, to grow fins or something"
The deep miracles are characterised in some cases by the "gnawing/biting insects". Aldritch might have seen this as the path to getting closer to understanding the deep. So he eats and eats, and becomes an almost liquid in form. Perhaps he believes that is he can consume everything, his liquid form will cover the world and bring about his world of deep sea?
Or perhaps like Kefka he wanted to demonstrate the lack of permanence in the so-called gods by striking them down and defiling them. After all, even he became a lord of cinder, not for virtue but for might. A demonstration of the meaninglessness of power by virtue of its vulnerability. "The gods are meaninglessness, anyone can be powerful. Watch." And by devouring the gods and their power, cutting ties with the age of fire and making himself the champion of the deep.
I always just assumed "The Deep" was another term for the Abyss, ie. darkness, ie. humanity. The vision of a "deep sea" would be the darkness the envelops the world when the fire fades, which is why Aldrich abandoned his duty to relink the First Flame after his vision. Like the Locusts and the Sable Church of Londor he rejects the old gods who embodied the First Flame and did everything in their power to stop the age of darkness, so it makes sense he would devour them to stop them from interferring.
Please don't crucify me for being late with this one, I was busy escorting Edwad through Lothric Also i'm in the process of moving and man is that time consuming ᵃᶫˢᵒ ᵒᵛᵉʳʷᵃᵗᶜʰ ᶜᵃᵐᵉ ᵒᵘᵗ
Dont worry^^ take your time I personally wouldnt have watched the video anyway before I didnt finish my first playthrough, because I always want to have my own solid lore theories before I watch other peoples ideas.
Well at least you don’t have to fight the dancer at the time. She is basically impossible for a new player at the correct level but is actually impossible in reality because you only have a +1 weapon when she is balanced around having a +8 or even a +10 weapon. Your vigor is also really low still and she will one shot you. You definitely need more experience and levels before I think it’s reasonable to defeat her. Even then she is still pretty challenging. At least you can just pick up the banner and leave if you killed Emma and deal with the dancer later.
Nietzsche wrote, "beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster . . . for when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." I think the abyss watchers are derived from this quote.
Yet the sense of duty still remain in them : you see them trying to eliminate the abyss, even if it means killing themselves, just like you see artoras fighting the abyss, even if he is still corrupted
I like to think that the Soul of Cinder is literally an amalgamation of all the chosen undead who linked the fires, and that the Soul of Cinder doesn’t just adopt Gwyn’s fighting style, rather it’s Gwyn’s very soul surfacing, the god king himself trying one last time to preserve the age of fire, HIS age of fire.
@hasimansari843 it's likely a test, if you can't beat it then you won't be able to link the flame. Although this doesn't explain how unkindled ash tried and failed to link the flame before. But it's possible that the soul of cinder had not manifested when they tried. It's also not clear when the unkindled ash attempted to link the flame, for all we know they could be from all over time, as far back as the events of ds1. Perhaps the soul of cinder manifested in response to many failed attempts to link the flame. Dark Souls gets murky pretty quickly when you try to clarify anything.
No, the soul of cinder is fighting you to test your strength, not to preserve the age of fire. It's a test to let only the mighty become a lord of cinder and link the flame. The soul wants you to win, but it'll test you first.
The moral of the story is: -Iudex Gundyr: Always try to be on time, otherwise you get the job that no one wants. -Vordt of the Boreal Valley: Your boss has absolutely no respect for you! -Curse-Rotted Greatwood: Nature is damn scary sometimes... and gross. -Crystal Sage: If you do your homework and study really hard you get superpowers -Deacons of the Deep: Priests are scary! -Abyss Watchers: You and your friends might be powerful enough to change the world, but at that point the only people left to fight is each other. -High Lord Wolnir: Even the strongest, most powerful people in the world are afraid of the dark. -Old Demon King: Respect your elders because some of them can still kick ass. -Pontiff Sullyvhan: People don't become assholes just because they're rich, riches attract assholes. -Aldrich Devourer of Gods: Even if you only eat one god, if you call yourself the devourer of GOD'S most people won't question it. -Yhorm the Giant: even when you are good at your job, responsible, royalty, a gold-plated badass, and you have a giant sword, someone will still laugh at you. -Dancer of the Boreal Valley: When you are famous people will fuck with you just so they can say they did. -Oceiros the Consumed King: I got nothing, this guy's just fucking weird. -Dragonslayer Armour: Inanimate objects have just as many stories to tell as people do. -Champion Gundyr: see above (Edit: sorry @Yohannan, i wrote that wrong. i meant see the entry on Iudex Gundyr) -Lorian and Lothric: Crippled people can still be fucking awesome. -Ancient Wyvern: Fuck this boss it sucked -Nameless King: Some people never give up on their friends, and those people are usually badasses. -Soul of Cinder: Your legacy can last long after the world has forgotten your name. -Champion Gravetender and Greatwolf: if you are boring people will pay more attention to your pets than they do to you. -Sister Fiede: Nuns are scary too, also: Some people will die for their family. -The Demon Prince: There's no lore on this guy, i got nothing. -Halflight Spear of the Church: no mater how good you are at something, someone in the world is better than you. -Darkeater Midir: No matter how good you are at something, some challenges are too big for you to beat on your own. -Slave Knight Gael: Starting from the bottom of society and working your way up can make you strong enough to survive the end of the world. I've thought of a few more: - Curse-Rotted Greatwood: (Thanks, @Endurabledude for reminding me this boss isn't a natural spirit tree) If you pile all your problems away in one place instead of dealing with them as they show up, one day it will come back, all at once, to bite you in the ass. - Deacons of the deep: Organizations that are around for too long eventually forget their purpose and devolve into nothing but keeping their group alive. - Lorian and Lothric: Family can be more important to some people than the rest of the world, and sometimes it's hard to tell if feeling that way is a good thing. - Ancient Wyvern: @CER SIVA is right, there is always another way. But if you can't find it, ask a lazy person to do it for you. Not only will they show you how to do it, but they will do it in a way that requires much less work. - Demon Prince: Even if you have nothing special about yourself, you can be famous too if you let someone rich insert something inside you. Bonus points if they're royalty. - Oceirus the Consumed King: Some parents love their children, but others raise their kids to do what they didn't, or couldn't do when they were young. When these children try to live their own life, their parents can't take it and snap. - Dragonslayer Orenstein: A consistent story isn't always the same as a good story. Pointing out plotholes might only be distracting you from the point someone is trying to make with their art. filling in plotholes however, can be a fun and thought provoking excersize. - Patches the Unbreakable: A small business run by one person can be just as corrupt as an international mega-corporation. Pay attention to where the things you buy come from. - Emma the High Priestess: Young people often assume that their elders are full of old and archaic ideas that don't mesh with the modern world. That kind of prejudice only blinds them to how, even if flawed, those ideas are born from how much their elders care about them. - Segmeyer of Caterina: Fan service can be a bad thing, but if done right it can be an opportunity to tell a beautiful and interesting story. - Orbeck on Vinheim: If you do your homework and study really hard you get superpowers... or you could die. Especially if you hang out with cultists. - Hawkwood the Deserter: when you see your friends going down a path that turns them into something less than what they were, and you can't help them, it can be the hardest thing you'll ever do to just walk away. Be a good person, if not for your own sake, then for the sake of those who care about you. - Horace the Hushed: if all you do is sit in the corner of the room with your arms cross, and never say anything, everyone is going to pay attention to your hot friend instead. - Eygon of Carim: When you have a character who dresses in all black, has a deep gravely voice, speaks in jaded insulting quips, wields and over-sized impractical weapon, and is literally a knight who decided to protect a maiden without her asking him to, it will take a special kind of writer to make them truly cool. Usually it's just cringe inducing. - Ludleth of Courland: If you were a powerful person in your youth, but now you're just a withered, crippled old person, there is still a way for you to be helpful. Maybe even a way for you to save the world. - Giant of the Undead settlement: Sometimes making a friend is as easy as walking up them and saying hello. You would normally expect Sesame Street to tell you this, but sometimes adults need to be reminded of that, too. - Lapp: sometimes people who go on long soul searching quest, that take them to the end of the world, come away from the experience thinking being a dick is just as good an idea as it's always been. - Pickle-pee: Even the best written and most depressing stories have a place for a character whose name is a reference to a penis. - Locust Preachers: Some people will always be stupid or desperate enough to fall for someone in a dark alley promising them the world. Thank's for reading all the way to the end. I know it's just a youtube comment, but i really appreciate all the positivity. This took a long fucking time to come up with. I'm dyslexic, so it took even longer to write, since i had to keep fixing so many mistakes.
Out of all the stories, the Siegward and Yhorm storyline shows me I'm prepared to cry. Siegward is such a special, fantastic character. Thanks for showing us a little bit of insight with each video.
a "Scholar" who advised a Lord, and told them to escape or break the cycle? I wonder if there are any other "Scholars" that advise potential lords to abandon the cycle? I have no Aldia...
No, actually it was Kathe, Yuria mentions him so we know he is still around, pulling the strings of the Londor folk and the pilgrims going to Lothirc castle.
Perhaps the "drastic means" Lothrics family took was to abandon the Sun cult, which would explain why EVERY sun covenant statue has been smashed throughout the souls games
But the Lothric line is what kicks off DS3, not the previous two. That would mean they would have to go back in time and smash literally EVERY statue. Not exactly out of the realm of possibility, but it does seem excessively petty.
Lothrics curse was to become a lord, drastic means was most likely abandoning the faith in lothric, and using dark sorceries of the kingdom to transfer the ressurection ability of a lord, to his brother by magic[who could actually fight], ressurecting a lorian who would go out and kill a demon prince, and die while doing so, to acquire enough souls and flame to potentially link the fire, but upon ressurection the curse blinded and left lorian crippled, but nevertheless he succeeded and defeated the demon prince, only to have upon returning, and seeing the consequences of fire, to abandon their faith
The one thing i still don't understand is lothric and lodran the same place or just because the stagnant of linking of fire, the place got fucked and twisted? I just can't wrap my head around why irithyll and anor londo is connected, or why the old firelink is the boss stage of demon prince
@@ilhamadigunawan5264 actually I just read about it the other day. Irithyll is Anor Londo. When all the gods left and Gwyndolin was the last god in Anor Londo, he became more confident (I guess) in his deific status, assumed the name The Nameless Moon, replaced the golden sun with a bright moon, renamed Anor Londo Irithyll (which means moon in the elf language of LOTR, apparently) and filled the city below with his Darkmoon Knights. Pontiff Sulavyn, who worshiped Aldrich and wanted to feed him a god, joined the Darkmoon Knights and usurped power. Now instead of following Gwyndolin, the Knights followed Sulavyn, not knowing they were being corrupted by the deep and serving Aldrich. Pontiff gave his Knights eye rings, which slowly turned them into Pontiff Beasts (which is why The Dancer and Bort look so wonky). The pontiff and his Knights stormed what was Anor Londo during the fading flame and imprisoned Gwyndolin in the chamber for Aldrich, and Yorksha in the church tower for later. One of my favorite bits of lore!
27:40 I thought it was pretty clearly explained in the game that Prince Lothric never linked the flame. previously. This game takes place in is his age of fire which is why the old lords were awoken (Lothric: plan A, Old lords: Plan B. Ashen one: Plan C)
Yeah when the old lords whome have linked the flames failed in their mission and just stayed in, plan C was to resurrect the ones who tried previously and failed in the process thus us and some if the NPCs we got along the way.
24:00 The Abyss Watchers and Artorias the Abysswalker "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
The Abyss Watchers were I supposed consumed by the very thing they wish to destroy. Or one watcher said to the other watcher "Yo mom gae" and started this whole endless fight nonsense.
Can we talk about how Aldrich learning things from his dreams and being able to use the power of what he learned in the waking world, as well as all of the talks of the deep DIRECTLY resemble how the world of Bloodborne works?
If you’re referring to people who seem like they could be shorter, such as Sulyvahn, Gundyr, or Lorian, I’ve always believed that they have been physically affected by either the amount of souls they claim, or the power of their own souls. Gameplay-wise? Probably an intimidation thing.
Sorry to reply to an old comment but I always took it as an example of how twisted the world and the characters are becoming. Like Vaati pointed out in the end of the video the landscape around the Kiln is... not right. Basically, fire is dying, reality is going wack.
Tiny curiosity: In sen's fortress in DS1, there's a mercha that looks taller than you... only because he uses a player model, he's just levitating a little above the ground to look imposing lol
Yhorm is the only Lord of Cinder you fight that you can’t serve. The Abyss Watchers/Undead Legion of Farron have the Watchdogs of Farron, Aldrich has the Aldrich Faithful. Yhorm has... Siegward?
BOB! Do something! It’s heavily implied that Lorian wasn’t supposed to but was worthy to and Lothric was supposed to but he didn’t want to. So they never did. Which is why the Lords of Cinder were resurrected in the first place.
Same here, I actually am on my first run of the game, I have 3 bosses left, and I’m very excited to finally beat this game, I used to not be able to even beat vordt, now here I am, just beat dragonslayer armour last night, Im hype
@@elsangdorj1406 well yes, but don't confuse it with being a bad game, all fromsoftware dark fantasy games are really good. Ds2 is the easiest and as I said, lore doesn't relate that much so it's a good place to start.
For some reason I've fallen back into watching random Dark Souls lore, tricks and meme videos and now I want to play through all again. What a magnificent series.
Was hinted at that Alderich can cause hallucinations on the Gods/people he consumes before they die, and those Hallucinations sound a fair bit like BB. Could be nothing more than just a nod, but interesting
EA - "A right and proper publisher, only, it developed a habit of devouring wallets.. They made it a Lord of Publishing. Not for virtue, but for profit. Such is capitalism, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance [they will ever change]?"
*Imagine saying* "I'm Pontiff now bois" *and ordering a DIRECT DESCENDED from the goddess to be your private dancer and she actually does it* Spare some for the rest of us Sulyvahn.
@@fast.food.ninjalarry954 lol, but just to be clear outside of a joke not even his mother would love pontiff the guy became ruler and just made her his slave, another guy who tried to do that was jafar ........hmm, well i guess they are pretty big chads damn chads man, holy shits
Andrew Mayne I agree, he has a nice storytelling voice! He could go easy on his S's though. Had headphones in and they really did a number on my ears lol
Hello Vaati. Just wanted to say I've watched your channel for almost a decade now. I'm going through a lot of anxiety right now and your DS3 videos are helping me keep myself grounded throughout the day. Thank you for your craft.
It doesn't matter how long it takes for you to make one of these videos, the quality of your lore videos are so polished and well researched that I don't mind at all :D Keep up the good work!
I have a theory about the four Lords, and maybe this is just me. I think they are a meta reference to the four main play styles of Souls games. Lothric and Lorian are the people who always co-op, Yhorm plays offline (hence the loneliness), Aldritch is the person who spends all night invading other people (and teabagging you after backstabbing you for the 10th time thanks to a laggy connection), and the Abysswatchers are the people who play in fighting pits. I feel like that might make the Lord of Cinder the person who's played this game so long under so many files that they can handle (almost) any challenger with ease.
I mean.. Cannonically The Soul of Cinder Is meant to be Gwyn and The Player Character Characters from 1 and 2's Movesets Combined. Each of its Phases Taking into account The 3 Main Playstyles. Melee, Ranged and Magic.
"He who fight with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." -Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil
Thank you for all the stories that made us enjoy the game more and understand it well. Your channel should be written in the history books. You created stories that took us to another world. ❤❤
I’d say that Gundyr did get his wish in at least helping link the fires. The coiled sword imbedded in his chest is a testament to that. He serves as the guardian and gatekeeper of Firelink Shrine. A brutal way to determine who was worthy, to be sure, but it proved it nonetheless. Slaying Gundyr proved that our Ashen One was the one who would link the fires, and the the sword in his chest is the one that ignites Firelink Shrine’s bonfire. He helped find one worthy enough to link the fires, and even if it wasn’t him, his hope was to find one who would, wasn’t it? I feel that, in the end, he did fulfill his service.
...or breaks and yells before resuming his peaceful demeanor. Giving him a legend among students that if you don't listen to him he'll crack and nobody will know what happened.... but thats just an opinon.
I think the “unspeakable means” mentioned are some form of illicit sorcery used to fuse the souls of Lorian and Lothric. They both have something the other lacks. Lorian is powerful in physical strength. Being able to single handedly take down a demon prince. While Lothric is weak and frail but powerful in the ways of magic. By fusing the souls of the two brothers together they could make a dual being powerful enough to link the flame
Vaati, you're a the greatest of the loremasters. Thank you so much for this video and all the others as well... You can just see the things beyond the veil of confusiness that makes these games so good. I just love your videos.
Your Lore videos always fill me with sadness, tears, joy and wonder. Your videos mean a lot to me. You are revealing to us all the Dark Souls lore. And one thing is certain. The lore of Dark Souls is deeper than any game I've ever played. Thank you so much for your amazing videos Vaati!
I really like Lothric and Lorian. It's sad what happened to them, but stuff like Lorian taking on the curse willingly is really wholesome and supportive. I kind of wish that if we weren't going to link the fire in the end, we could leave them alive.

"Devourer of Gods" does not mean you have eaten more than one, just like you only need to a kill a King or a member or royalty once to gain the title "Assassin of Kings"
BTW - the weapon at the end of Aldrich's staff is not a real weapon - it seems to be there only via spell - like Soul Great Sword, only more permanent. The Nito great sword dissolves once you kill him, but his staff (Qwynndolyn's staff) remains. Since we what kind of affect eating someone like Qwynndolin does to him, if he HAD eaten Nito (who cannot be eaten since he was cannon-killed in the first game) he would probably look different than what we see. I mean, the fact that Nito is gone and even in the second game only a highly-faded soul of his is remaining, makes it hard for him to be eaten.
I kind of wondered why the Soul of Cinder would fight you if your going to link the flame - but then I remember that all but of the endings is not about linking, and after seeing it again, the link-ended does not look like it works (comparing linking at the end of DS1 with DS3) - so perhaps even if you try, linking the fire is either no possible for you even now, or perhaps it simply not possible at all anymore. Or perhaps it just means that you DID link it, but each linking leads to a less impressive linking and less impressive first-flame (so, at this point, might as well be a failed linking).
I like your idea. When you think about it, Dark Souls 3 is the game that let you many way to end the game where the two firsts only give you the possibility to link or abandon the flamme. Here you can litteraly TAKE the flamme for yourself ! It's like if the fire had became more malleable, weak enough to be put in someone's hands and to be use for whatever we want... And sorry for my english...
Well, the linking ending is normal linking, but the flame is already way too faded, not strong enough to burst into flames. Soul of cinder not allowing you to link the fire may be the same reason as why all the lords don't want to sit at their thrones. They don't want to link the flame. They want it to end.Or, more believable, is soul of cinder guarding the flame. You may just want to start a new age of dark, why would the soul risk it?
The current Dark Souls wiki is just morons taking Vaati's theories as canon and rewriting the articles. It's gotten to the point Vaati's videos have become kinda annoying for me. Despite him stating it's just a speculation, Dark Souls lore has holes so people can theory craft, but not label them as canon.
At the High Walls of Lothric, you have the undead that are worshiping, the Dragons/Drakes, but some of them seem to be worshiping the other undead that seem to have been turned into trees. Are the Pilgrim Butterflies a third stage? Undead Pilgrims, Pilgrim Trees, and then into the Pilgrim Butterflies. Since so much of Dark Souls revolves around the repeat of cycles. Could the Pilgrim Butterflies be the early stages of the rebirth of the dragons of the first dark?
Rowan Hodges well , when u kill the hag in the beginning of the ringed city dlc , she does say that she is going to see an angel and then turns into one. Theory Confirmed xD
After revisiting this video i just realised something. What if Aldrich's age of the deep sea is actually in reference to the rise of the old ones in Bloodborne (FYI this is in support of the shared Soulsborne theory). The elder gods in Bloodborne are largely based off of Lovecraftian horror which has a big focus on the deep sea and is where many of the elder gods reside. That, and the fact that the gods in Bloodborne are largely fish-based. a pretty flimsy idea but i do think its worthy of thought.
I always think that Aldrich has many connections to BB since he talked about vision of deep sea. His name in Japanese is “Erudoricchi” or in EN is Eldritch which represents Lovecraftian horror. Also his covenant’s icon is similar to Oedon, the formless great one, rune too.
Could be a reference to Moonside Lake where you fight Rom in Bloodborne. Aldrich dreams of the deep sea that is in fact the barrier/pocket dimension Rom is in. Also Rom teleports around and uses a mass homing attack. Maybe Aldrich learned that from Rom?
Nice theory, but i wonder, if the word "deep" in the "deep sea" refer as actual depth of the sea or the "curse" that aldrich brought to the deacons or the church itself
I agree. it's such a great video as well as a great introduction to main themes. I don't know why some people complained that he didn't dig deep enough in this video and only quoted the item descriptions and blah blah blah. I can't wait for future videos that really get into it.
Yeah I love that detail, it's gorgeous. Noticed it when I was making the soulsong video. Literally rising a new age of hollows into the sky - or at least that's how i interpret it currently!
I noticed in the item descriptions there's brief mention of a Queen of Lothric disappearing and it reminds me of the optional dark ceremony for Hollows in DSIII.
Ive been mulling over this lore issue for a while now, and if anyone wants to shed light, please do. Here it is: So in the beginning, there are four lord souls, right? Well, I've been tracing the progression of these four souls, and there's an interesting pattern in where these souls end up in the future at the ringed city. Based on the nature of the bosses fought and the appearances of the souls they drop (along with many other things, like move sets and musical cues, to name a few), here is what I've concluded: The Light Soul begins with Gwyn, and ends up with the soul of cinder. The Dark Soul begins with the furtive Pygmy (presumably Manus), and ends up with Gael. The Life Soul first belongs to the witch of izalith, but she loses control of it, and by the end of the ensuing mess of demons, it is claimed by the Demon Prince. The issue I've been tackling for a while now is that damned Death Soul. At first it belongs to Nito, but there is no evidence of its whereabouts in the ringed city. I am doubtful that Midir, Argo, or Halflight has it. Each of the four souls end up coalescing back into their ultimate, original forms by the time of the ringed city-except the elusive Death Soul. Where could it be? Does Aldrich wield it? Wolnir? When it comes to the Death Soul, you can usually just follow the skeletons, but Wolnir is more closely tied to the abyss, which is associated with Manus and the Dark Soul. Right now, Aldrich and his weird blue Deep Soul are looking promising, but even that is really shaky. Thoughts, anyone? Or am I shouting into the abyss like Artorias, here?
@@Nightksa1995 iirc, it calls out 4 "lord souls" bit doesn't sub-classify them.. also says the dark soul was unlike the others. So i believe you are correct.

Four years later I am just a viewer but I understand more of the lore through this video than reading the items lore. This is very well done. Thank you so much. From a great fan of the Dark Souls series. And I love it with no ads :D
I think the fact that it's not as drastic as that makes it even cooler. He didn't just give people the means of killing him. He just gave them a weapon that put them on equal footing, so he could then fight back and prove that he was worthy. I like to imagine the stormruler we take has been used hundreds of times by people who have tried to kill him, and they all failed
So I need to tell you, wholeheartedly and as sincere as I can be...I am MORE than offended that you say "this video is way too long as it is"! They are not long enough!
I really enjoy them but I keep hearing a lot of whistling/ sibilants and it makes my teeth edge. Every time there's an "s" sound I hear *swoOoOooo* I tried ear buds and headphones. Will have to try speakers. That said, I don't thumbs down any of his videos; they're way too intriguing.

Is it just me or does it seem like, in the world of Dark Souls, they are becoming more and more desperate to find people to link the fire? If you assume Yhorm came first then Aldrich and lastly the Abyss Watchers, it reveals something interesting. First is Yhorm, a giant that apparently no one liked but everyone admitted that he was immensely strong. Then there is Aldrich, who was a lord "not for virtue but for might alone." Lastly there is the Abyss Watchers, who like fit the title lord in the absolute loosest sense. In fact the prince Lothric wasn't even naturally strong enough to earn the title of lord.
Interesting. Yet another example of decay, though this one is of standards. How desperate must the denizens of this land be to make a crazed, cannibalistic once-human beast that practiced sorcery the epitome of godhood now that the gods themselves have fallen?
Lothric is really interesting because he was born for the sole purpose of linking the fire, which is really unusual. But he was too frail so Lorian basically had to carry him the whole way. Then they didn't even link it in the end but whatever
Just started playing Dark Souls 3 for the first time and have been looking for any info and lore I can devour. This is incredibly well made. Thanks, Vaati!
Damn, I dropped a tear when I realized that Siegward killed Yhorm for this exact reason, it's because of this promise. Holy cow, how deep must a friendship be that one asks the other for killing him when something specific happens to him and the other one not only accepts but fullfils the promise he gave to the other. Damn, I mean, really, this is so cruel and beautiful at the same time, killing your best, most beloved friend because of a promise you gave to him, jezuz "cry"st. I always struggle at getting a deeper understanding of the story behind dark souls, because it's not like in other RPG's (like The Witcher) where you have hours of content heavy dialogues. Now I know the background of that cutscene, it's really short, but so deep and meaningfull, I am absolutely amazed, wow, I feel how an other tear makes itself ready to drop out of my eye right now, absolutely beautiful. God, I should punish myself for not helping Siegward when he was stuck in the well at one of my NG's+. Thank you so much for sharing these deep insides, I am absolutely overwhelmed by it.

So I've been playing since DS3 was released, but got bored waiting for the DLC and so while I'm at work I listen to the lore videos from start to finish in my Bluetooth as inspiration and understanding for the little bit of gameplay I squeeze in after the kids are in bed. Love it, even so many years later. Nice work.
@@jewbacca896 be warned that Dark Souls 1 and 2 are much more about the run to the boss instead of the boss itself. They figured out the game wasn't so tedious if they simply made the bosses the focal point of the struggle and tada, every souls game since 2 hasn't been shit. I hate dark souls 2 with a burning passion but I would still recommend Dark souls 1. It has many of the same gripes and annoyances but I still had a decent time with it.

awesome videos as always, really sorry to bother you but i have a question that i am to lazy to look up. which ending supposedly ends the cycle. is it the one where you bring darkness to your world but fire comes back (i thought this ment a more calm fire comes back, not so bad as the one currently around) or the one where you steal the fire so it never comes back and humanity has to overcome the darkness themselves like we did in the dark ages. also why does the soul of cinder attack you. is it not apart of gywen. is it suppose to test you. anyways thanks for rhe awesome vids. keep it up

Very, very well done sir.
Do you think ds3 will be goty 2016.

Dark souls 3 was my first souls game, I fought this boss called Aldrich and thought hey it looks way different than what the game intro showed. After completing the game I went on to buy DS1 and DS2.
While playing DS1, I fought a boss called Gwyndolin, and instantly realized that hey that guy looks familiar, he looks exactly like Aldrich.
After doing some research and watching this video..... I realize Aldrich is actually the black goo.....he was in the process of devouring Gwyndolin.

Watch."
And by devouring the gods and their power, cutting ties with the age of fire and making himself the champion of the deep.
@@danny5357 So, basically, Aldritch wanted to get a fourth DS3 ending before the player does 🤔
I always just assumed "The Deep" was another term for the Abyss, ie. darkness, ie.
He wanted to be a megalodon

Me who accidentally summoned the Dancer first: *Laughs in agony*
Well at least you don’t have to fight the dancer at the time. She is basically impossible for a new player at the correct level but is actually impossible in reality because you only have a +1 weapon when she is balanced around having a +8 or even a +10 weapon. Your vigor is also really low still and she will one shot you. You definitely need more experience and levels before I think it’s reasonable to defeat her. Even then she is still pretty challenging. At least you can just pick up the banner and leave if you killed Emma and deal with the dancer later.

That's pretty much what it is, I believe it plays Gwyn's theme too when he uses his moveset hinting that it's Gwyn's soul.
that's a fantastic insight!
One thing that I do not understand is how is it preserving the flame when it is trying to kill us and not let us link it? 🤔
The moral of the story is:
-Iudex Gundyr: Always try to be on time, otherwise you get the job that no one wants.
-Vordt of the Boreal Valley: Your boss has absolutely no respect for you!
-Curse-Rotted Greatwood: Nature is damn scary sometimes... and gross.
-Crystal Sage: If you do your homework and study really hard you get superpowers
-Deacons of the Deep: Priests are scary!
-Champion Gundyr: see above (Edit: sorry @Yohannan, i wrote that wrong. i meant see the entry on Iudex Gundyr)
-Lorian and Lothric: Crippled people can still be fucking awesome.
-Ancient Wyvern: Fuck this boss it sucked
-Nameless King: Some people never give up on their friends, and those people are usually badasses.
I've thought of a few more:
- Curse-Rotted Greatwood: (Thanks, @Endurabledude for reminding me this boss isn't a natural spirit tree) If you pile all your problems away in one place instead of dealing with them as they show up, one day it will come back, all at once, to bite you in the ass.

Wonder if that would somehow explain why invading as a sunbro gets you medals now.
Ashen one: Plan C)

just started the dark souls series and why is everyone so damn tall.

Cool theory

He would also correct your first sentence.
Why do we keep having bitchez in his videos? Is it because DS is hype?
Talk more bout the lore.

The understanding or the killing?
Yeah I guess so huh. Good point
Maybe the main bosses were really the friends we made along the way!

Vaati: This isn't concrete and you shouldn't take it as such.
Dark Souls community: We'll act like we didn't hear that.
Plus the Pilgrim Butterflies actually look like trees

And don't forget there's an actual Caryl rune called "Deep sea"
Could be a reference to Moonside Lake where you fight Rom in Bloodborne. Aldrich dreams of the deep sea that is in fact the barrier/pocket dimension Rom is in. Also Rom teleports around and uses a mass homing attack. Maybe Aldrich learned that from Rom?
Nice theory, but i wonder, if the word "deep" in the "deep sea" refer as actual depth of the sea or the "curse" that aldrich brought to the deacons or the church itself
The Japanese texts suggest it's similar to the Abyss not the sea.
Revisiting these videos for the first time in some years. They are so well made. Thank you Vaati.

This was great! I loved all of the info on Yhrom and the Profaned Capital, especially.
Also, damn were those shots beautiful.
Ive been mulling over this lore issue for a while now, and if anyone wants to shed light, please do. Here it is:
So in the beginning, there are four lord souls, right? Well, I've been tracing the progression of these four souls, and there's an interesting pattern in where these souls end up in the future at the ringed city. Based on the nature of the bosses fought and the appearances of the souls they drop (along with many other things, like move sets and musical cues, to name a few), here is what I've concluded:
The Light Soul begins with Gwyn, and ends up with the soul of cinder.
Nicholas Fuhrmann I was thinking midir because as part of his fight he sends out humanity as an attack, but I don't know I'm not too deep in the lore
don't think there are named souls as you mentioned, only the dark soul
Nightksa1995 you are wrong go play ds1 they mention it in the i tro there are 4 souls
Storm Mann gwyn nito izalith and the dark soul, no mention of death soul or others like this guy says

Martin hill the funny part is if we don't link the fire the embers will relight it eventually repeating everything
Interesting. Yet another example of decay, though this one is of standards. How desperate must the denizens of this land be to make a crazed, cannibalistic once-human beast that practiced sorcery the epitome of godhood now that the gods themselves have fallen?
How many people will willing burn themselves and go hollow afterwards
Steve Jobs There is still the Usurpation of fire ending.
Lothric is really interesting because he was born for the sole purpose of linking the fire, which is really unusual. But he was too frail so Lorian basically had to carry him the whole way. Then they didn't even link it in the end but whatever

Nice work.
There’s 2 dlcs though
Why is ds3 soooo gooooddd and yet terrifying
I am addicted. After completing Elden Ring, I am going on my mission to complete all souls borne games 😊
Literally me. Elden Ring was my first souls game as well, and then I bought DS1 and DS3, I’m playing thru DS3 rn and in Irithyll, have yet to play DS1
@@tenthofadime5657 dark souls 2 is awesome. They’re all amazing and Important to mention to OP that DS2 is most like Eldenring
@@tenthofadime5657 Do not listen to this man. DS1 is a masterpiece and DS2 is really good. Both have many great challenging bosses and only a couple of bosses have terrible run backs. Their stories and world are so well built as well, so it's not just about bosses either.
@@crummyclub9344 nah ds2 is complete ass
Lothric and Lorian look similar to elves, at least to me. There's a certain city of elves that comes to mind from a certain series of books.
*coughs* Lothlorien *coughs*
Wow i am big Tolkien fan and i didn't notice 😃
Lolnice
Tolkien was referenced multiple times in this game already, like how "anor" is the elvish word for "sun" and "Irsil" (like Irithyll) means "moon".
I always wanted to know where the words anor, londo and irithyll came from. Thanks ^^
+Dragonbasty Wow that's really cool! Thanks for the info.
I love your voice and that accent. also awesome content guides and videos keep the great work :-*
Thanks! Not many aussies on UA-cam cause of our upload speed, hah.
+VaatiVidya I been keeping up with your videos sense dark souls one and love em
I agree, you have a great voice for narration and you don't just speed through everything. also one last thing I think your very skilled in darks souls 3 after watching the edwad the chosen one series.
what?
+Erick Who pissed in your cereal?
How do I always come back to this video. It’s not even recommended to me, I just go out of my way to look it up and watch it often. Whatever the reason may be, you got me Vaati. You got me by the blood echoes and I love it.
