This is potentially one of the best video essays I've seen on this topic. And I would say - not just this topic - but rather also on the intricacies associated with it. I was cooking while I listened to your work. I peeked to my left, to where the monitor was, every now and then, and I was very much enthralled throughout. You had me nodding my head several times and giving me several aha moments before the video ended. There were even points when I stopped what I was doing for a few seconds out of a minor eureka shock you had given me. You were able to link so many concepts together quite clearly: concepts I myself hadn't really thought of before. One of these were points were on the entities competing for our attention. I never really did think of that before, but it makes so much sense. Your choice of music also is quite potent and fitting throughout. Except for the minor lack of audio towards the very last seconds of the video, everything was immensely, professionally well made. Beautiful work, beautiful work. And I am excited to hear more from you. And I am excited to see you blossom onward alongside your contemporaries. You very much deserve it. You have earned yourself a follower and subscriber.

I’m obsessed with DS3. I use to be just a FIFA & COD player. I arrogantly dismissed Dark Souls as unplayable and a waste of one’s time due to it’s difficultly. A friend of mine showed me the trailer which uses the song In The Woods Somewhere for Dark Souls 3 and the atmosphere and visuals really caught my attention. Once I tried it there was no turning back. This game changed my life.
I still remember my first Nameless King kill, after over 70 or so attempts, I simply resorted to counting out loud how many hits I had landed in an attempt to stay focussed and try to increase that number with every attempt. On the attempt I actually killed him I was streaming the game to a former friend and to this day still he occasionally teases me with "24, 25, 26 - I DID IT! I FUCKING DID IT! ... easy." I have yet to experience this feeling from any other (non FromSoftware) game.
Honestly really good video, despite some comments I really like the longer intro about modern gaming and agree with you fully. There are so many games that have changed my life, the likes of which being souls games, red dead, and undertale. I started playing games after a long time to get through a rough patch in life and what’s kinda sad is one of my happiest moments in life was beating the nameless king after 108 tries (really bad I know I had a crappy build) I was literally crying and barely breathing. DS3 has definitely had an impact in my life and how I approach problems and things I need to do. And holy crap Skyrim and GTA V were my first non Nintendo games ever and I’ve been a all platform gamer since, I just relate to you on everything you say. You put everything I’ve thought about dark souls 3 into words your a really good writer dude. I don’t know if this comment is coherent I’m very tired.
This was really well done, I had friends into demon/dark souls but it really didn't catch me until bloodborne, it was my first and favorite fromsoft. The lore/setting/bosses and speed of the fights was on another level, I've since played every souls game. Gonna sub, keep up your great work and I hope your channel grows.
Excellent video, eloquently spoken, unique perspective, well articulated, crafted with intention and truly inspiring. I can't remember the last time I sat straight through a long video but it had my attention the whole way through. I'm glad I watched it. I don't really have the words to describe it but I enjoyed it and thank you. That was a lot of value for under half an hour.
Platinumed Elden Ring in 65 hours? I highly doubt it is possible without following a guide at EVERY STEP!!. If you did just that, then it is just "hand-holding". But you talk like you like Elden ring because it does not hold your hand at every step.
Dark Souls 3 was my first From Software game, and I'll never look back. It changed me on a deep level, and you just can't put it into words. It truly rescued me from the depression and loneliness that filled my life at the time. I can confidently say that I am a better person for having played it.
Wow. In in utter shock. You put everything I have been feeling since i beat this game at 13 into words. For years I have lectured my friends and family on why ds3 is truly something else, yet i was never quite able to convay the sheer gravity of what i meant. Maybe it was this very feeling of uncompleteness that drove me to talk about it over and over again. Even to the point where my family had to ban talking about it during dinner time. And here it is, the reason why Dark Souls 3 is more than any piece of media I’ve ever encountered, expressed in words. I’m still firmly of the belief that it must be experienced to be understood, but this feels like it at least somewhat captures some essence of what makes Dark Souls 3 like a religious experience. At least for me anyway. Thankyou.
Masterpiece video. Instant sub. You got me thinking abt ds3, honestly, gonna have to replay it I was stuck on the nameless king for literal months, eventually beat it while my gf was watching :) unforgetable memory
Hell of a video, excellent work. I have so many thoughts about movies and games I’ve been thinking about making videos about them just for the hell of it, and this inspired me a lot.
Amazing video! I recently starting playing dark souls and was so excited to see a recently video come out about it! Love the Mario reference, that is literally my childhood
Good video so far but I would offer the critique that you spend far too much time on your opening statement and getting to the actual DS3 piece. Anyone clicking on this to watch a DS3 video and not expecting to see a video essay on the decline of gaming is going to be very disappointed.
I feel this is an issue with most content creators. While I applaud taking the time to set the scene and properly insert the subject into context, there's too much of this masturbatory "essay" mentally that goes on and on to add faux gravitas. It's like trying to avoid the "style over substance" situation, only that too much substance becomes style, ironically. Detail is good as long as it's focused. Get to the point, less is more, etc.
I genuinely agree with this criticism of the video as it currently stands. Thing is, from my end, it's more of a title/thumbnail issue than the content of the writing. The video was initially titled "How Dark Souls III Defeats Modern Gaming". I was hoping this would create the expectation that some of the video would be about "modern gaming". Unfortunately, UA-cam wasn't showing the video to people with this title, so I switched it to something more concise and "click-able". The video covers multiple topics and it's hard to put that all in a short title. I did my best and i think the result is still not optimal, as you pointed out. It was a good learning experience for me to think of the thumbnail, title and entire essay from a viewer perspective, and stick closer to one topic next time. Thanks for your feedback and for watching : )
Idk, I really liked the random facts that I didn't know about, I think it was a great start but I also watch videos while doing something so maybe it just depends who watches it (subbed)
Hey dude, amazing video. Really put a lot of thoughts that I have had since beating the game into a great presentation. I can not stop urging my friends to play this game because of the reasons you mentioned in the video. It really is a formative experience like no other game that I've played before. Also great editing and writing and everything. Really impressed. Keep on keeping on
I’ll definitely have to get back into it. I started playing it a couple years ago beat the second boss and just never got around to playing it again because of other things coming out or personal happenings. Thanks for making this video.
I’ve been stuck on this boss for like 3 months now … I put the game down and stopped playing but watching your video gave me the encouragement I needed to pick it back up and keep grinding thanks 🙏🏾 💯💪🏿🔥
Holy shit dude what an amazing video. i never expected this when i clicked on it. i am so glad to hear other people put into words what we all experience with these games.
Legendary video. I admit, I clicked on this thinking," oh boy, another one. And here we go..." but actually, I felt this appraisal in my heart and soul.
Why can't anyone praise souls games without being utterly delusional and pretending that 99.9999% of modern gaming is some fucking gacha hellhole with 1 good game every blue moon?.. Also... why are we pretending that souls games are this insane life altering march through hell like it's a right of passage to being a higher lifeform? These games are undoubtedly hard, but at the same time it's like a 100hr game at most.. the boss you die to a 100 times, each attempt is like 2min. It's so ironic when the most popular genre today is competitive games whether its shooters or mobas, if you're hardstuck gold in league, valo, or any other game, getting to plat is literally more time consuming, more stressful, and harder than finishing the entire soulsborne series, so idk why you aren't praising those games when your biggest point is "instant gratification bad". Can't help but think all those "DS saved me" vids are a roundabout way to stroke one's ego by saying "I gitted gud" without sounding pretentious, and of course the mandatory reason of chasing the algorithm since cultish vids around fromsoft gets cultish support.
TLDR; Elden Ring proves to be the most successful title.. bringing the soulsborne genre to the mainstream Filthy casual gits gud Dark Souls III is a masterpiece

Everything resonated with me as someone playing Elden Ring as my first souls game and like you, someone that used to play COD in its golden years and that loves The Dark Knight Liked, subscribed and looking forward for more! This game is so overrated to me, it's insane. I mean don't get me wrong, it's still a great game with some great bosses. Gael and Friede are all-timers for me. But man, there is also so much stuff in it that is just linear and derivative without the inventiveness of the other games in the series. I never really felt the Souls magic playing this game, outside of the DLC. The DLC stands head and shoulders above the main game imo. If it were just the main game I would almost never replay DS3.
A profound reaction to a piece of art isn’t goofy, it’s beautiful. Even if you didn’t have the same reaction to this one, I’m sure something else has made you feel similar. If not, I’m sad for you and hope you find one soon!
You should be talking about dark souls 3. But it's more than half way and I've heard call of duty, Skyrim and Uncharted way too many times. Also you mentioned something about games being art and then went onto tangent about previously mentioned games for 20minutes. I don't know what am I watching. Pass

I started it today! Watching your video is a sign! I believe all these souls like game are a challenge which teach you patience, delayed gratification and forces you to become absolutely the best which could bleed out in areas in real life!
Liked the video and what you had to say, but throughout the entire thing every second sentence you say gives off a very strong impression that you just try way too hard to be artistic and poetic. It distracts from the point and even weakens it, making it seem like an exaggeration. I hope you notice this and tone it down in future videos. This video did well in spite of the tryhard poeticism, not because of it.
My experience was almost the same as yours. I started with Sekiro but dropped it because it was too hard for me at that time. Then Elden Ring was released. I tried it immediately and it really hooked me up for tons of hours, until I got stuck on some parts. I then looked for tutorials, tips, and tricks until I beat the game. I come back to Sekiro but am still looking for a guide on UA-cam. I really got interested in the Dark Souls series next, I beat DS 1 and 2, but I am still following Cowboy playthrough on UA-cam. Then, when it comes to Dark Souls 3, I want to really experience this game by myself, no guide, no tips or tricks, just a blind playthrough by myself, and god, I'm really glad I'm doing that. Now I can feel why Dark Souls is a masterpiece. It was a game that you should experience, explore, and learn by yourself. You level up together as the game character, and it will give you the most satisfying and unforgettable gaming experience.

Before you know it, you're at the final boss going "I know I can beat this."
I'm actually shocked you don't have tons more subscribers. this video is amazing and the way you tied everything together was simply top tier. Great job! im excited to see what you come up with next :)
Got about 400+ hrs on DS3 and man it never got old when I had a PC it was always ready to play
a video with such a high quality like this deserves way more appreciation.
I’ve been a Souls fan for years, and I must say, thank you. You’ve articulated what I’ve always felt about these games far better than I could.
I'm very glad you've written this entire video narrating it in a perfect past tense. Fantastic choice for the video's long term value, and documentative feel. Well written ingeneral too!
You’re a great writer man. Keep it up. You’ve got something here. Also mad respect for whiplash and DK references.
Appreciate the compliments ❤
@@scopecreep_ for sure I hardly ever comment on YT, take that for what it’s worth :). Keep it going :)
Great video essay. I finished the video thinking it would have hundreds of thousands of views and likes. Genuinely surprised it didn’t.
Keep making videos essays like this and you’ll surely gain a solid following. Keep it up man. Blessings.
Fantastic video man, already played the game but these souls essay vids just give these nostalgic feeling of when I was playing them
I’m obsessed with DS3.
“… and finding the will to fail forward” may be the most poignant summation of SoulsBorne I’ve ever heard
Sir! Great video essay, one of the best I've seen.
I FUCKING DID IT! ... easy."
I have yet to experience this feeling from any other (non FromSoftware) game.
I don’t know if this comment is coherent I’m very tired.
thank you king, I'm happy that something I wrote could mean something to you. Appreciate your view and your comment : )
@@scopecreep_ of course keep on making content I just subbed
I see video appreciative of dark souls 3, i click it. Simple cause & effect. Maybe someone else can put to words how much i loved that game.
Dark Souls 3 tells you it's okay to move on.
I can confidently say that I am a better person for having played it.
this is one of the better videos ive seen on this topic. thank you for a masterpiece
"It doesnt inspire change... it requires it!" DAmn! what an unexpected poetic end. I got chills!
Glad you liked it : )
Thankyou.
really glad my video was of some value to you : ) thanks for the watch.
dreams and nightmares in the background of the nameless king fight goes absolutely bonkers
Masterpiece video. Instant sub. You got me thinking abt ds3, honestly, gonna have to replay it
I was stuck on the nameless king for literal months, eventually beat it while my gf was watching :) unforgetable memory
Dude I never leave comments on videos but this was genuinely so good, I watched the whole thing - please keep it up!
cool story bro, now go play Bloodborne
Exactly
Hell of a video, excellent work. I have so many thoughts about movies and games I’ve been thinking about making videos about them just for the hell of it, and this inspired me a lot.
Amazing video! I recently starting playing dark souls and was so excited to see a recently video come out about it! Love the Mario reference, that is literally my childhood
Good video so far but I would offer the critique that you spend far too much time on your opening statement and getting to the actual DS3 piece. Anyone clicking on this to watch a DS3 video and not expecting to see a video essay on the decline of gaming is going to be very disappointed.
Delayed gratification dude
I feel this is an issue with most content creators. While I applaud taking the time to set the scene and properly insert the subject into context, there's too much of this masturbatory "essay" mentally that goes on and on to add faux gravitas. It's like trying to avoid the "style over substance" situation, only that too much substance becomes style, ironically. Detail is good as long as it's focused. Get to the point, less is more, etc.
it's called context
Smaller games with more focus and actual creativity. That’s what we need right now.
TLDR: He liked this game because an optional boss was very difficult.
POV: a cod player apley's themself for the first time
😂
I’ve been stuck on this boss for like 3 months now … I put the game down and stopped playing but watching your video gave me the encouragement I needed to pick it back up and keep grinding thanks 🙏🏾 💯💪🏿🔥
Holy shit dude what an amazing video. i never expected this when i clicked on it. i am so glad to hear other people put into words what we all experience with these games.
I'm in minute 11 of the video, still waiting to hear about dark souls 3!!
In minute 16, there were some mentions of bloodborne and elden ring, still waiting to hear about dark souls 3.
okay, let me tell you it gets better after that :)
I think you're missing the point
65 hours to platinum? With ER being your second go at a Fromsoft game? Highly doubt it
Right.. it took me 100 hours to beat the game, and im a very experinced player.
He did say he used spirit ashes and magic. You can create some broken builds like that
Legendary video. I admit, I clicked on this thinking," oh boy, another one. And here we go..." but actually, I felt this appraisal in my heart and soul.
such a thought provoking synopsis. An awesome video. I hope you make such videos for other soul games as well. DSIII is really something special.
When bro finds out about Rogue likes/lites, he'll lose his mind
Your video inspired me to revisit my Soulsborne playthroughs with an additional though process, adding even more to the experience! Thank you!
Wow man amazingly articulated with just enough humor. Easy choice to subscribe. Good shit my guy.
Weird flex but can tell it's the only souls game you played
TLDR;
Elden Ring proves to be the most successful title.. bringing the soulsborne genre to the mainstream
Filthy casual gits gud
Dark Souls III is a masterpiece
This video was awesome. Love how you put dreams and nightmares in the background
Was wondering if anyone would catch that 😂
This video was a masterpiece, great editing and great storytelling, how do you not have more subscribers? Everything resonated with me as someone playing Elden Ring as my first souls game and like you, someone that used to play COD in its golden years and that loves The Dark Knight
Liked, subscribed and looking forward for more!
I wish I could write scripts like this
This game is so overrated to me, it's insane.
If dark souls 2 didn't have ADP and constant ganks dark souls 3 would be the worst game in the series by far imo.
@@descendantofartorias2067 Agreed.
This video is goofy as hell
Just don't watch it
@@user-tm6on9og3g how would I know it's goofy as hell if I didn't watch it first
A profound reaction to a piece of art isn’t goofy, it’s beautiful. Even if you didn’t have the same reaction to this one, I’m sure something else has made you feel similar. If not, I’m sad for you and hope you find one soon!
@@wrathfulsausage4884 ok wrathful sausage no need to shit yourself over a jokey comment. Goofy ahh comment
@@wil-o-the-wisp you should’ve just said “ok wrathful sausage” that would’ve been funnier tbh im high as hell and it would’ve cracked me up
Holy shit bro. DS3 and the Dark Knight are my favorites too. This video was an excellent summation of what these games mean to me. Subbed for sure.
The Dreams and Nightmares instrumental goes crazy, awesome vid man!
Your script is very verbose. I don't think you need to dig through the thesarus as much as its seems you have in this video.
You should be talking about dark souls 3. But it's more than half way and I've heard call of duty, Skyrim and Uncharted way too many times. Also you mentioned something about games being art and then went onto tangent about previously mentioned games for 20minutes. I don't know what am I watching. Pass
Really great editing and writing, I'm always excited to see someone's opinions on these games DS3 in particular is my favorite FromSoft game. Awesome vid I subbed can't wait to see more
i’ve been replaying the souls games recently as well so it’s crazy that this popped up on my recommended. i’ve been subscribed for a minute but this video has shown me that i’ve been sleeping on you bro this video quality is amazing and i loved this watch
Im sorry but the first half of this video is unnecessary
This was dope. Mirrors my own experience coming from Elden ring to DS1. Very well done 🔥
The dreams and nightmares edits with boss fight was tight, nice vid man
This game is bad
UA-cam randomly recommended this to me, and i watched the entire video. It's excellent, and i agree with your sentiment on most things. Subscribed.
Wow…..👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I have no words to describe this review except exquisite… deff earned a sub..I didn’t even realize you were a small channel I normally only watch channels I’m subscribed to I guess the instant mind numbing gratification has hit me since I put ds3 down 2 years ago after 5 full completions and a run with cinders and convergence but you my good sir have me craving a new run thank you and god bless you
This video helped me understand why so many feel so strongly about these games. Deeper meaning is found through suffering and perseverance. But games can also still be fun for the sake of fun without being meaningless.
wow this quality is good you definitely will grow, i cant wait to watch
As an ex-mormon who used to knock doors in Eastern Europe Lithuania, "like a mormon marching door - to - door" sent me 🤣🤣😂😂. Amazing video!
lmfao I love that you have the dreams & nightmares instrumental as the fight goes on
Epic video bro! Thank you. I’m yet to play Dark Souls 3. But I’m looking forward to it. I started the same way you did. Except I also skipped Elden Ring after it smashed me around for an hour. Now I’m back and loving Dark Souls 1. I’m starting from the beginning and I’m hooked.
Dude this is a killer video. You've got the knack for this type of content. I listen to nothing but long form content and youve got the base format down. Your voice is great for it too. Keep it up man.
Bravo. Your writing was incredible. Your video editing was interesting, intentional, and purposeful. Loved your critique. Well done.
Really glad the algorithm brought me here. Loving this
Best writing in a video I've seen in years - genuine poetry
What an absolutely amazing video on the feeling and triumph of Dark Souls 3! You put into words what the majority of us felt but could not express. These games are truly amazing and like you said, they should not be rushed or cheesed. Definitely subscribed after watching this. I look forward to your future content because this video was put together perfectly.
Wow! That was an incredible video and I couldn't agree more on DS3 it is an incredible experience and you did a great job conveying that. Thank you
I’ll never forget beating Nameless King. I’d beaten the main game many times but gave up with NK and his bastard dragon. When I finally beat him I almost wept. Great video, brother.
