Comparing Rhulk to Calus now...The Witness must be rubbing his temples constantyl, knowing he has to settle for a bloated, indulgent despot to finish the fight instead of a luitenant who genuinely believed in the cause.
I think ultimately the story meant to tell us that Calus was constantly being played, manipulated and probably abused by the Witness (mainly by appealing to his extreme insecurities). Comparing him to Rhulk, Nezarec, Savathun (who was supposed to be a disciple but had her own agenda) and probably Xivu (I guess she'd be a disciple too?), Calus is spare change and probably more of a tool than an actual ally.

Rhulk was stuck in his pyramid ship due to the curse that Savathun put on him (she cursed his ship with Light which forbade him from leaving). Calus was busy with his fascination with the dark, and it was during that time in which he likely wasn't ready to reveal himself just yet. Eramis was doing the whole scavenger hunt for the Witness to collect all the pieces of Nezarec, who was dead for a long time, up until recently. That leaves Savathun and Xivu Arath left. Savathun obviously betrayed the Witness because she had her own ideas, and as for Xivu Arath, I'm not 100% on whether or not she is a disciple yet. maybe she will be anointed next DLC? My lore isn't the best, which is why i'm gonna go read up on this, especially since i didn't play season of the hunt or plunder.

The reason calus was probably chosen first was because the witness could control him easily, while eramis was conflicted by the resurrection of praksis as a scorn and Xivu Arath wanted to destroy the traveller (as far as I know) while the witness wanted to do whatever that portal thing was at the end of the campaign, so it probably felt like she couldn’t be trusted as well
I believe that the Disciples are a group of generals from different races. Some will be from what we know(Xivu Arath of the Hive, Calus of the Cabal, Eramis/Fikrul of the Eliskni/Scorn), but there will be some who are not of these species, like Rhulk.

Rhulk literally forced natural selection on his planet and he made it so only he was worthy of selection. My man is a gigachad in his own right. He made the hive gods look like a bunch of thrall to him, made the hive worm gods piss themselves and submissive to him alone…
@@urifrid6767 Haha I just read a ton of lore and I gotta say next to the witness, the winnower and the gardener, rhulk is the most powerful opponent we as guardians have ever faced to this point. He is a gigachad and we haven’t killed him. In the raid he uses stasis branches to cover himself to heal when he is defeated, we never beat him. The last opponent that was uber powerful was savathun and rhulk is entire orders of magnitudes stronger than savuthun and oryx. I fully expect to see him return at some point.
@@zdude0127 Yeah. iirc out of the current raids, only the returned D1 raids and Garden of Salvation (excluding Eris' monologue as you load in) lacks in raid dialogue. Last Wish has Riven taunting us, Deepstone has the Clovis Bray AI and Vow has Rhulk. Meanwhile you got Shattered Throne with Riven sometimes, Prophecy with Drifter, Eris and Orin at the start and end. Duality has Eris and memories of Claus and Spire has Osiris (the real one this time) for dungeons.
Rhulk is a better villain than Ghaul or Eramis. Both had entire campaigns to themselves. Yet Rhulk was only present in a raid / a repeatable mission and a few lore tabs. Heck he’s better than Calus, imo. Obviously Oryx and Savathun are leagues ahead

Playing this day one with my old friend group was such a great experience. Instantly knew he was my favorite boss and we were all freaking out over this huge new threat.
Good news and bad news, in lore he's confirmed to be alive. The branches that sprout from him at the end of the raid put him in a sort of stasis to let him heal

He was kind of a disciple, he worked to fulfill the darkness' agenda through the sword logic but wasn't directly subservient. He did his own thing mostly but still "communed with the deep."
He wasn't a disciple because he didn't reach the same understanding that Rhulk and calus did. The witness used him as a tool instead of a subordinate, letting his hive destroy civilizations in the name of the darkness but never trusting him. That's why Rhulk was always in savathuns throne world, to hold the leash
Rhulk is just a fraction of what the Witness is capable of, and I don’t want it to be an immediate boss fight. I want dialogue, cutscenes, and I want to learn what he wants. Does he want destruction? Domination? What does he mean when he says “Salvation”?
Working on another video about all that. I’ve tried farming for dialogue during his encounter and it’s been incredibly difficult getting all his dialogue. It simply wasn’t feasible for this video. This just includes all his main dialogue throughout the raid and preservation.
The way I see it: The Upended can only be wielded by one who is worthy, otherwise anyone trying to use it would be destroyed, hence why it is a privilege. Rhulk no doubt takes a lot of pride in the fact that he himself was worthy.
Also if you look at 6:50 the 3 darkness subclasses are displayed on the right of the mural as crystals. Dark blue (stasis) at the bottom, orange (rhulks power) to the middle, and finally green (strand) to the top.
He imploded it using resonance energy, the orange power he, nezarec, and the witness use, on the tech that harvests power from the sun. He only destroyed the blue sun though. The scorn and certain sects of the hive and house of salvation fallen are all under the witness' forces. This is the first time we faced a foe powered up with resonance, the main power of the witness, and his pyramid tech.
