Tip when pouring your oil in the funnel if you turn the bottle so the neck is on the high side the oil doesn't go glud glud glud and splash. it will pour in a steady stream .
In the primary I empty a full quart bottle, then pour 6 oz of oil in the empty bottle and pour it in. No guess, no over or under fill. Same end, just simpler for me. Also be sure you use the T27 torx! Others "almost" fit, but will mess up your day!
As well as putting in the proper amount of oil in the primary, I always double check the amount of oil that is touching the clutch assembly. Then I'm satisfied.
This is a great video and thanks for giving us really good information. The only thing I wish you added was when you said you will set the torque but you didn't say to set it to what? I have been reading that 86 inch-pounds but I have to look up the one for the drain plug? Thanks again.
Ladies and gents invest in a service manual- I see a lot of folks asking about torque specs- These amazing videos are great and I appreciate the hell out of them but you really should have a manual that will have all sorts of specs for your particular bike- There was a time when Harley owners did most of their own work except maybe heavy machine shop work and granted that is one of the reasons older bikes often had issues. But the new bikes if you do the work properly you will have the ability to really take care of your bike and have the satisfaction of knowing your bike and all of the benefits that come with it. I cannot tell you how many times I have stopped to help a guy or gal on a bike and they had a ton of bling and stuff installed but no tools, didn't really know much about the bike and if they had a little knowledge and a tool roll, I wouldn't be on the side of the road helping them out. It is also a safety issue if you ride your bike and aren't able to easily and quickly detect a problem then you are not being safe.
Charlie Perry its personal preference. The o-rings can be a bit more difficult to install. If you change derby covers sometimes it is necessary to use a derby cover with no center section instead of the solid flat piece from the factory, so in that case a o-ring would be better.
Thank you for the video, this has got to be one of the most informative I've seen. I bought my manual but the simple questions I have were answered by you.
Great Video!!! Patrick, you have me confident enough to start doing this work myself.... My question: Where can I get information on the proper torque settings for the common bolts being used in this, as well as the rest of your videos???
get a manual for your bike- seriously these videos are great but you should also have a manual they have all the proper torque specs for your particular bike- J&P amazon etc all sell Clymer manuals for your specific bike.
+Simon Longmore He tells you 84in. pounds for torque. Which, for most of these late model big twins the torque range for the derby cover is 84-120in. pounds. Unless you meant the drain plug torque spec? Which, you really don't need a torque wrench. Or just google it.
Thanks for telling me that some primerys are completely covered with a fake plate. like a bumper is covered with a body panel that people call bumpers. This perfectly fitted chrome plate can be found on a 2002 883 Hugger Sportster. Now that i'm done scratching my head!
I've got a 2013 flhtcu and theres no space to use a funnel to add the fluid back into thru the derby hole..Ya think they woulda made the primary cover just a little wider..
Harley bikes use three different oil fluids on their bikes, in three with different locations, crankcase, primary and transmissions and each have a different interval as to when to change the various fluids....
DO NOT replace the derby cover gasket with a J&P gasket. I did so, on my 2012 Electra Glide, and she leaked fluid until I installed the Harley stock derby cover gasket.
Never had a problem on my bikes with their gaskets- Why would you make such a firm declarative statement relating to something that is probably not true? You may have had an issue but thousands of other people don't have a problem- which if you think about it sort of points to the problem being you.
quick question. is a O-ring gasket not the better choice to replace on the cover ? Or are they a pain to install in this situation? btw good informative video.
Is it necessary to change the engine oil once every year, irrespective of # of miles we have put. I changed my engine oil on street rod after 13 months, but only 2000 kms. Could i have waited more time ?
Hi I would like to know what is the tool to pass the cables of the seca armpit of the Harley Devidson I'd like to know why I work in a motorcycle workshop here in Brazil
Same thing i was looking for most say to use threadlocker on drain plugs and locktight on derby cover... idk tomorrow will my first time changing all three in my streetglide
What is the weight on the primary fluid? I used royal purple, and now my clutch is slipping... but I saw on another video they specifically said NOT TO USE SYNTHETIC, because it can make the clutch stop slipping... I can testify to that... but I'm sure I can use another brand fluid, when I know wut weight is is... brands definitely welcome, for suggestion...
I´m wondering , may i use normal motor oil for the harleys motor ? instead the wet tipe clutch oil, because the cluth dont use the same oil in this motorcycle brand .
hey I am looking a 2014 street glid and i had water up knee high up the side. the owner said there is not way water got in engine or transmission. I am new to Harleys and don't want to look like a total dumass when i go talk to him. What can i expect to or check . would this effect anything electrical?
Have a Softail custom 2001 ,think this is an twin 1340cc ,so where Im at is cant find the drain plug .Have located pri. Trans. Where is that motor drain ,Ive been looking for an hour haha
@@paulos.araujo3873 Yes, there are certain oils that are designed for that HD Formula + is one of those. However, standard gear oil should not be used in the primary .

First time changing my oils, this helped a lot. Thanks!
J P Cycle has the best how to videos available, hand down they ROCK!!!!
Thanks. Very simple but important points. I did not hear you say what the bolts on the derby cover need to be torqued at. Can you confirm them??

Just did my primary and put on a new derby cover, pretty easy and satisfying thx.
Thanks a bunch Patrick. Videos like these make me want to purchase from J&P only.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the video, this has got to be one of the most informative I've seen. I bought my manual but the simple questions I have were answered by you.
With no mention of the bolt torque setting😳🤔☹️
Your video’s are awesome, thanks for your assistance

I like your comment. I watch the video to get the torque specs and he says to torque it but doesn't tell the number. LMAO
Great video! Question: What is the torque for the drain plug?
Thanks this is the best video I have seen so far!!
He is a professional no doubt.
hi guys great vid thanks
whats the torque setting on the drain plug please
sorry i havnt got a manual
What is the proper torque spec for the oil plug??
An easy way to add the correct amount of extra oil is to pour from the new can you the empty can, then pour that correct amount in the primary.
very good advice thank you
Thanks for the education and great video. Props!
Really good video. Simple and to the point. Thanks for the info about having the bike up right. Would have like to know what the "Torque Spec" is.
+Simon Longmore He tells you 84in. pounds for torque. Which, for most of these late model big twins the torque range for the derby cover is 84-120in. pounds. Unless you meant the drain plug torque spec? Which, you really don't need a torque wrench. Or just google it.
I just use a new baby bottle with the tip of the nipple cut off for the last 6 oz, the bottle has oz marking so no need to worry about over filling.
Your video's have helped a lot! Thank you for making them!
Can you make a video on 5k and 10k service for a 103?
if your dip stick has a swivel you check it on the jiffy stand, it its a solid dip stick check oil in upright position.
He is changing the primary oil-no dipstick
thanks Patrick for the video ! and wish all the best
I just wedged my kickstand up against the curb and turn the bars to the right so that it brought the bike stright upright
Thank you very much for the video !! It was done very well !!
Great video. Thanks Patrick
Hey Patrick what brand/model torque wrench are you using? I'm looking to buy one thank you in advance
did you find the torque wrench name brand I like to know to
@31B4P what were the torque specs??? I was hoping you'd say it but you said "set it...........and wait for the beep" instead.
What torque wrench do you guys use? I need to get one.
Very informative. Thanks. Headed to your Anamosa store forthwith.
Be sure to use Red Loctite and stand on the cheater bar for the derby cover T27 bolts. Just like the guy I bought my bike from did. 😤
🤣
I didnt think I heard compensator bolt ...😆
Great video thx u saved alot of money and gave me confidence to diy...
Glad we could help.
Awesome video. Very descriptive yet right to the point. A+

I'm definitely dumping old oil in my neighbors driveway lol
I like to use German spec on my derby cover. Gutentight but I also have my calibrated torque arm to back it up.
awesome video, thanks for the visual.

You mentioned the torque for the derby cover but not for the drain plug
What torque wrench do you use? I need to buy one, and there is such a wide range of them.
nice video. i need to know how many pounds to tork the Drain Plug?
Excellent job, Patrick. Thanks.
What type of oil do u use for your primary and for you transmission?? Please respond? Thank you
Are the drain plugs in the same place on a 2006 street glide
can you please post a video on how to replace a starter 06 and newer preferably the 07 Ultra Classic thank you very much love your videos

tomcata1467 I use Amsoil in all three.
Whatever you do, DONT use Amsoil in a Harley
they literally don't

Mine leaked as well!
quick question.
is a O-ring gasket not the better choice to replace on the cover ?
Or are they a pain to install in this situation?
btw good informative video.
O ring is fine.
If my transmission fluid is at the add mark, how much should i add? Cant find that anywhere and dont want to blow a seal somewhere overfilling.
If not changing derby cover gasket, wouldn't it be cleaner/easier to just pop inspection window and dump the gear oil in there?
What’s the torque spec for the primary drain plug?
I need help. I used that drain plug and only got a quart out. Went to fill it and it over flowed after 1 quart.
Do u guys add removeable loctite to derby cover screws? What's the torque spec?
Is it necessary to change the engine oil once every year, irrespective of # of miles we have put. I changed my engine oil on street rod after 13 months, but only 2000 kms. Could i have waited more time ?
Drain Plug 14-21 ft lbs. Derby Cover 84-108 INCH Pounds on a twin cam
You didn't mention the torque spec for the drain plug.
14-21 ft lbs.
All 3 fluid drain plugs have the same torque setting as shown above.
Terrific Explanation!!
What torque wrench attachment size do I need to buy for tightening the derby cover screws and chain inspection cover screws?
Should be a T-27, but the whole set is worth buying.
I love how you instruct to use the proper torque settings for drain plug installation but fail to reveal that setting.
Hi I would like to know what is the tool to pass the cables of the seca armpit of the Harley Devidson I'd like to know why I work in a motorcycle workshop here in Brazil
Do you need lock tight on the bolts?
Same thing i was looking for most say to use threadlocker on drain plugs and locktight on derby cover... idk tomorrow will my first time changing all three in my streetglide

My 99 road king calls for a k&n c-171 oil filter. I mistakenly instslled a k&n c-170. Will this have an effect on my bike. ???
So what was the torque setting?
So if it’s below that disc in there it’s low?
I´m wondering , may i use normal motor oil for the harleys motor ? instead the wet tipe clutch oil, because the cluth dont use the same oil in this motorcycle brand .
bro! what brand is that torque?
Is this oil different than the engine oil ?
If you use the synthetic engine oil (Syn 3), it is the same fluid.
do u change primary oil when it's hot or cold
Never thought about the neighbors back yard, hmmm, clever, clever.
Would be cool if you added the torque values on the bolts.
Don't dump it in your backyard. Save a step by skipping the drain pan and let it run out on the ground preferably while riding
So I have an issue this first plug for the primary is not on my 05 roadking classic where the hell is it lol
so why didn't you tell us what to torque the bolts to
Good video!
Why remove the derby cover when you have the inspection window right there?
The inspection cover is to inspect slack in the chain, you could jam a funnel in there and fill the primary if you wanted to.
@@jpcycles thanks

Kinda Missing the Torque Specs
Thats awesome. So why then does my garage charge me $90 labour? Hahaha jk jk
I need asking you should the bike on kickstand or not should🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I have a stock road king with the 96.how much oil goes in the primary? Harley told me one quart(32)
My 2008 Road King 96 cu.in. Owner's
Manual states:
Wet Primary change will require 38 fl. oz. (1.40 qts)
Dry Primary change will require 45 fl. oz.
Drain Plug tighten to 14-21
ft/lbs (foot/lbs)
Derby Cover Bolts tighten to 84-108 in/lbs (inch/lbs)
Have a Softail custom 2001 ,think this is an twin 1340cc ,so where Im at is cant find the drain plug .Have located pri. Trans. Where is that motor drain ,Ive been looking for an hour haha
You have a Twin Cam 88. Check under the frame on the right side back by the swing arm pivot. The drain plug should be there.
Check the video by Bikers for Bikers three hole oil change..
I have a 2011 road glide custom fltrx. Can I reuse the o ring for the derby cover
You probably can. A few bucks for a new one is just cheap insurance.
Problem is, that derby cover gasket has been superceded by the o ring.
May i ask can i use HD,s "Genuine SAE 20W-50" MOTOCYCLE OIL? IE the engine oil i use for this job or is is special primary oil only?
There are oils that are specific to primary use, but HD does sell an oil that you can use in primary, engine and transmission. Its called Formula +
J&P Cycles many thanks 👍
I might suggest a little more light to show the underside of the bike, otherwise, great videos.
I need that funnel
Hi there ,can you please tell me if i can use in the primay the Bel-Ray hypoid gear oil 85w140...thank you in advance
No, do not run gear oil in the Primary. Its too heavy.
I thanks for the quick reply..i just ask because it is the same grade of the h.d oil 85w140 used in both side (transmission and primary)

whats the torque spec for a harley touring 2017?
do i need 1/4 torque wrench?
first time doing my oil.
$150 and let harley do it is very e expensive!
yes get one, helps stop loosing bolts and breaking bolts..
Excellent
Wouldn't draining it before taking the cover off make more sense?
Thanks.
Thanks. Learned alot. Is it absolutely necessary to use a torque wrench? What are the ramifications of not using one?

possibility of shearing the bolts
So 38ounces for all models of harley or..just the touring models?
It varies, even for touring model years. What bike do you have?

why is it called a derby cover?
