    Check out the Video Description to find links to the Oil and Filter and Tools I use in this video.
    Always remember, to start your bike and let it run for at least 5 minutes before you change the oil. Warm oil drains better, pulls out sediment better, and with "Dry Sump" engines like in our Harley Davidson motorcycles, the oil tends to "sump" down into the engine case over time which will prevent you from draining all the oil from the bike during this procedure.

      Good vid! However I think you want to ride it for about 30 minutes to get it up to good operating temp. Then drain it.. I don't think 5 mins would be sufficient. , (just my 2 cents) :)

    • @JayWCase
      @JayWCase  4 роки тому +35

      Pete, Thank you for the comment.
      If a person wants to ride their bike for 30 minutes before they change the oil, I think that's great.
      My main concern with a Harley Davidson engine however is not whether the oil is hot, but rather whether the oil pump has had time to scavenge the leak-down oil out of the crank-case so that it can be drained. With that in mind, 5 minutes is more than sufficient. Anybody can open the garage door and run their bike for five minutes before they change the fluids. Not everyone will be able or willing to take their bike out for a 30 minute ride in February when its 28 degrees and there is snow on the ground. Thanks again for your thoughts.

    • @shawnnoname9291
      @shawnnoname9291 4 роки тому +14

      30 minutes is to long.
      You would have to let it cool off before draining and exposing cool air that replaces as the oil is drained.
      5 minutes is perfect.

    • @petelanzone484
      @petelanzone484 4 роки тому +8

      @@shawnnoname9291 opinions vary I suppose. To me when I do a 3 hole change I like to get it up to operating temperature AND I like to mesh thru all the gears,use the clutch and get the particulates moving around so I can drain most of it. It can be 20 mins or 30 whatever it is but more than just 5 minutes. After I am done I will run it for a few mins to check for leaks. Again, just MY opinion. And will do what works for me just like all the readers will do what they think is the best for them 😁 again opinions vary. Happy riding! 🏍

    • @TheMNB
      @TheMNB 2 роки тому +1

      Probably 75% of that was labor cost. It all comes down to how much is your time worth, do you trust them to do a good job, can you honestly trust yourself to do a good job. The answer to those 3 will determine whether it's worth it for you to pay the shop. I try to do the basic stuff that can be done at home w/o a garage myself and take it to the shop for the rest. YMMV.

    Not rocket surgery but that was the most thorough, intelligent presentation on the topic I've seen - thanks. Doing my first oil change on an HD and wanted to make sure I had what I needed to know. Thanks for the info on the gear oil. I was initially confused about the late changing of the filter but I can see that does work.

    I like that when doing your work you're very likely doing it like the large majority of us Harley owners. No lift on the floor with basic tools. Yet the finish product is as good as the big fancy mechanic shops. Right on bro .

    Great video! Clear and at a pace, anyone can follow your steps with. AS A NOTE: On MY 2006 Ultraclassic, the PRIMARY drain plug is NOT underneath.., it is on the lower face side of the main primary cover. It's a small, 5/16" allen head, plug bolt. I would also recommend telling what capacities are. 3.5 oz for my engine oil and 32oz of Primary fluid/oil. This will help newer riders/owners and those who get older and forget :) Other than that, you're video is excellent. Thank you!

    2 questions I (personally) think that were left unanswered:
    1. How often is a 3 hole oil change typically needed
    2. Which (hole) is the one changed for the 1-hole oil change.

    Great video bro, a Harley shop would charge $500 to do all this stuff, I prefer working on my own bike so I know it’s done right

    Jay new subscriber here. The last change I did was with AMSOL in all 3 holes. I have a 17 RGS. I am going to take your advice and put Gear Oil in the transmission. The shifting is noisy and clunky. I really hate it being like that and I came from riding Honda's all my life to my Harley in 17. GREAT video Jay... thanks again. I'm buying a used Harley in September. I don't trust too many mechanics to work on my vehicles. Thanks for this vid.

    Great video!! I am new to Harleys, but have been wrenching on metrics (mostly goldwings and cruisers) for years. This was awesome to be able to see the steps and the fluid amounts. Well done!!

    Great video! K&N filter 171-c makes a nice replacement because it has a socket in the center so no filter wrench is required.

    I like the calm demeanor you have when explaining the steps.
    I am terrified by doing something wrong with the consequence that my bike is shot.
    However, I need to learn this as my mechanic has retired and I just cannot pay HD 400+ for a full service.
    Thanks a lot for making the effort to publish this video. I can do this with your help 👍
