I have my brother in laws 2003 Heritage Softail to service. Its been stored in a barn since 2009. (he had a serious quad accident leaving him paralysed from neck) I've been cleaning the bike up first but my next step was oil changes altho i dont want to try starting the bike with 12yr old oil and was going to do an oil change first, change battery and turn the bike over by hand with spark plugs removed to make sure nothing has seized. Will put a tiny spot of oil in the spark plug holes beforehand. Your vid on the oil change simplified the procedure greatly for me. I had no idea there were 3 oil drains on the bike till i watched this. Many many thanks for your vids.
Been doing my own oil changes since 1978, and need a little help from time to time with different bikes. I’m not too proud to admit it either. Love this video! Great camera work and instructions. Easy to follow with perfect audio, lighting and editing. I wasted no time hitting the subscribe button and bell 🔔 Please keep it coming!
Perfect step by step instructional video. I learned a new trick about the blow by on this video. Did not hesitate to like and subscribe. Not only does he tell you what he is doing but, he tells you why he is doing it.

Just wanted to say thanks for being here and showing us fellas exactly how its done in an easy way so we understand. God Bless You and Yours! See you next time when me,a paraplegic, and my paraplegic riding partner need a hand with our Softails!
I just bought my first motorcycle. A 2013 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. A friend said I should expect a decent bill for oil changes and whatnot. So here I am watching videos to see how it's done to save me some money. Thank you for the informative and very detailed video. Also thank you for the links to the equipment I should invest in.
You are very welcome and yes tons of this can be done at home with a few simple tools...same as doing your cars and trucks, you just need to know fluid levels and how to check them. You'll save tons of money this way so I'm glad the videos are helping!
oh sorry about that...here is the link to Amsoil but if you find a local dealer they maybe able to offer a cheaper price as they get discounts www.amsoil.com/p/amsoil-v-twin-oil-change-kit-hdmb-hdmb/?code=HDMB-EA&gad_source=1

This has helped me tremendously, I am a new owner of my first heritage soft tail that also has the 103 engine. Thank you for making this video for the ones who don’t have the financial means to get their bikes to a shop. Have a blessed week. -AKA Lucky
great video. Just to add, there is now a half funnel that is made for removing the oil filter and allows the oil to drain into a catch pan instead of hitting the frame/engine. Mine has a hole and a rubber tube to direct it to the pan.
Lmao! "One ugah dugah..." First time I've ever heard that one... but knew exactly what he was talking about. That will definitely be a unit of measurement in my garage moving forward!

Great Video! Very informative. Better then most I've seen because you show what tools are needed and where exactly the plugs are. I expecially like your tips to make it easier and how not to overfill it with oil. Thank you!
@@sikbaggers Mornin, should I use the oil designated for each "Hole" and not just synthetic 20-50 in all three holes, I live in Florida...Thanks in advance !!!
I've been doing my own fluid changes for years and I picked up a couple of great tips thanks for the help. Just added a Softail to the stable and it's been a while since I did a fluid change on one!
Got my first Harley 2005 softtail. Always work on my cars but never did any work on a motorcycle. This video was great. Awesome and clean information. Thank you
So if I’m not mistaken, is the synthetic oil not for all holes? The oil for the primary is not the same ? Sure appreciate these videos, as I do need the information from time to time.
Hey David...yes you can run synthetic in all 3 holes..we run HD SYN3 in all thre holes on the baggers with no issues. The amsoil kit just has a slightly different weight for each one but its still all synthetic.
Great video! I've done these oil changes several times over the years, but this time I was looking to see if anyone has found any tricks by now about getting any more oil out of the engine case since during an oil change, you're really just draining the oil tank. There is still a bit of old oil in the engine. It's been fine over the years. Was just curious. Thanks for the video!
yeah youll never get all the old oil out and its fine...you would be surprised to see how much they dont drain on a HD service. When it slows down, they plug it back up. get her hot and drain her, thats about it.
Hi I have just done 3 hole change I used the redline 75/90 for trans works great also redline for primary big difference in shifting smooth. I have softail deuce with inspection cover I checked both filled threw primary less mess bike runs and shifts like new thanks again .
Very good point about making sure the derby cover screws are all loose ,before undoing the drain plug .( not the sort of thing i would have thought of .Great info.
Excellent presentation, well explain, I am an vehicle mechanic, I own a 03 H.D. Her. Softail Classic I will be looking at more your videos and I will get bike manual, Thanks 👍💯
Thank you for checking it out Ronald! Glad the video helped...and if you already wrench then this will be a breeze, just need the fluid amounts and torque specs and your set.
Very well done. Because of you I am considering buying a Harley. In my mid fifties and it's time to buy a Road glide special. Thanx and have a good day. Yes I use AMSOIL and its recommended by Harley dealers in DFW area.
Thanks Troy...well we have plenty of videos on the harley baggers ..street glides and road glides...the softail build is pretty new to us here but a lot of the info transfers over to same to the baggers.
Hey Mike thank you man! Much appreciated..thats what its all about...saving money and learning a bit about your bike...thank you for checking out the videos!
well done video, simple speak & easy to understand! you're going to help a lot of hesitant guys/ladies save a BUNCH of $$$ by being able to do these necessary maintenance items..
Love the videos, I just had to use a hand impact driver with a ½" socket T27 for my durby cover. As the dealership before me started to strip the bolts and didn't replace it. The impact driver is nicer if caught in time than a drill.
depends on the average temp you are riding in...Thin, low viscosity oils flow easier to protect engine parts at cold temperature. Thick, high viscosity oils are typically better at maintaining film strength to protect engines at high temperatures.
Great video. Just picked up a used 2003 Softail FXSTI with a Twin Cam 88 and plan to change the oil. Just need to decide if I want to go with Amsoil or Mobil.
Was very impressed on your technique of installing led lites on your bike..I have a trike HD planning on installing some on mine...thanks for all that info!!
Very helpful. I liked how you talked about cross-threading of bolts/screws. However, the very best way to prevent the cross-thread of bolts/screws is to put the bolt to the hole then turn left/counter clockwise until you hear a click. When you hear a click that means the treads are on track and wont cross
Just bought the wife a softail, thanks for the awesome video. Learned the hard way on stripping the bolts for the primary cover🤣, on my roadglide. Props for the tip.
My guess is the Heritage and the 06 Softail Deluxe differ just a little bit because my service manual doesn't agree with yours. However, they are close. My conundrum is that when I add the proper amount of oil as per the manual the dipstick shows an overfull condition. My manual also gives cold check and hot check instructions and should be performed on the jiffy stand. It even says that on the back of the dipstick...on the jiffy stand. The manual indicates that cold the oil should be at or just below the bottom weld of the filler neck. But when it is, the dipstick shows the oil is above the full line. On the hot check the oil is halfway up the filler tube. I took out some oil with a clean turkey baster and now on a cold check the oil is a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the weld on the filler neck but the dipstick still shows overfull. My manual say's to install up to 3.5 quarts of oil with a new filter but that seems to be way too much oil. What the heck am I missing here. Just to be clear I had the dipstick open to atmosphere when I drained the oil and I installed a new empty filter. Too much oil in Tampa ;-) .
Hey joe...yes you are correct about the amounts from yours to mine...they are very different size twin cams and you will need to use your service manual for sure on the specs. 88 vs 103 I would check it hot...in your case with it showing too much oil cold...but when its cold that doesnt really matter...it matters when the bike is running and the temps are hot...thats when you want the protection. Are you getting blow by? Oil dripping from your air cleaner when its hot or your riding? Also have you changed out the OEM disptick to an aftermarket one? Is your bike lowered in the rear? Bigger wheel in the rear or front? all of these things can effect the way your dipstick reads
thank you and yes its the Aplus MT1500XL Motorcycle Lift - amzn.to/3wjlOiN and here is my review on the newest I just bought a couple of months ago....went wth the same one when we added on to the shop ua-cam.com/video/IJXDxXpPelo/v-deo.html
A great video guys. Thank you for making basic maintenance refresher pleasant to listen to and not 'in your face' . Easier to stay focused and absorb, when the voice and professionalism is in layman's terms and not Sigmund Froid's or Billy or Bobby Badass's.
just watched your 3 hole fluid change on the 2015 Heritage... very informative as I'm planning to start changing my own fluids mostly due to dealership service costs. I have a 2016 Heritage, and could relate to everything you discussed. Thanks
Best video I have seen to date! Thanks for all the professional descriptions and information. I look forward to watching more! 2011 and 2015 Heritage in the Garage!
Hey Steve excellent video! I have a 03 Heritage and was wandering about the derby cover o ring..so Thanks! However let me ask..did you used to work at Kimball's in F.L. Indiana? I think I remember you from back in the day..However just wandering..Great job on the videos and thanks for the help!!
Hey glad to help! nah never lived in florida...so it wasnt me. Been in Illinois for most of my life except for the Army which I was based in FT. Benning GA.
Hey I just inherited my father's 97 singer and went Chang all the oil but was unable to find drain plug for transmission the two between the shocks I removed and they weren't it just wondering if there could be another location thanks video are very helpful
there is an oil drain hose with a clamp on it...check out this article here and step 3...youll see the hose www.durangoharley.com/--how-to-change-oil-in-a-harley-davidson
At the very end of the video the last time you checked the motor oil, you cut the video short if the dipstick says, you have to check it on the side. What was your final result with it on the Jiffy stand?
Hi, thanks for the video. Wouldn't it be a good idea to purge out the old motor oil? Just emptying the motor oil tank will leave the engine with about a third of old oil in the cycle. Thanks and kind regards from Switzerland, Andy
You can purge the systen if you wish, of course. The service manal does not call for it and if you take your bike to HD they wont do it either..but of course you can purge if you like, it wont hurt it
New subscriber here! What a great step by step video! This will be first time changing fluids on my heritage so I'm thankful for you - just put all tools in my Amazon cart but can't find the amsoil v twin kit
Thank you iris! Glad the video helped! Youll have to get that either through amsoils website or find a local dealer for it. One of my good buddies is a dealer so we get the discount on the fluids that amsoil offers.
sorry for the late reply...we have been in sturgis and 100 mph since we got back and I'm just sitting down to do youutbe comments..the amsoil kits will need to be purchased through a dealer from what I've been told...one of my buddies is a dealer and that's where I get it but yes the oil kit is separate from the primary and trans..its not really a "3 hole kit" the oil kit comes with the oil, o rings and filter, then you will need the trans and primary also
Informative video. Your statement about the Derby cover being difficult to remove is so true. I ruined my first Derby cover. Not sure why the factory installs them with a mig welder! Lol
Great video and excellent advice. I am leaning towards Mobil 1 for my 2019 Softail Slim that I purchased a year ago. I am planning to do my first 3-hole oil change and wanted to get your input on the if I should be using Mobil 1 20W-50 Full Synthetic for all 3-holes or should I use Mobil 1 20W-50 for the engine oil replacement only? If so, what should I use for the Transmission and Primary? Please advise. Thank you
5000 miles Motor, 10000 miles primary, 20000 miles transmission..the best way to do it in my opinion is every other oil change, do all 3 holes and youll never have to worry about it or try to remember what you changed last lol
I think the original design is Arlen Ness but its like 225 bucks so i found this one on amazon that was a little less than a 100 I think. amzn.to/3yjUEHe
Great question and I think that is better done in its own video IF the clutch needs adjusted. This video was already pretty long. I'll try to get one made up soon.
Was doing some research on my 2007 Softail. Per Transmission service bulletin M-1296 that applies to 96 CI six speeds: Capacity is 32 oz, may only need 28 due to residual in trans. Check level just rest the dipstick on the lip of the housing on side stand. Do not screw in.
The best 3 hole oil change video on a Harley, on the whole net period. Well done
thank you!! Glad to help!

Thank you for an excellent video! Would you care to share the make and model of your scissor lift / stand that you are using in this video? Thanks!
thank you and yes its the Aplus MT1500XL Motorcycle Lift - amzn.to/3wjlOiN and here is my review on the newest I just bought a couple of months ago....went wth the same one when we added on to the shop ua-cam.com/video/IJXDxXpPelo/v-deo.html
@@sikbaggers Great, thank you!
A great video guys. Thank you for making basic maintenance refresher pleasant to listen to and not 'in your face' . Easier to stay focused and absorb, when the voice and professionalism is in layman's terms and not Sigmund Froid's or Billy or Bobby Badass's.
Thank you for checking it out and the kind words! I hope the video helped!
Thank you very useful.....Great information and quickly taught without any unnecessary information unrelated to the topic
Glad to help!! be safe!
Love the videos on the soft tail as much as your others! Sure do appreciate you and what you doing.
Thank you and thank you for checking them out! Be safe!!
just watched your 3 hole fluid change on the 2015 Heritage... very informative as I'm planning to start changing my own fluids mostly due to dealership service costs. I have a 2016 Heritage, and could relate to everything you discussed. Thanks
Grateful to help you Brian! Servicing your sled is pretty easy...just need the know how and your all set to save a ton of money!
Excellent video, what is covering the saddlebag bolts
Thank you Larry...that was a 4 point docking system for a tour pack for softail. Available threw advanblack
I have a question about using alloy bolts for the derby cover. Should I add anti-seize to prevent bonding to the aluminum?
you can use anti seize on them but you will need to check them frequently in case they decide to back out.
Best video I have seen to date! Thanks for all the professional descriptions and information. I look forward to watching more! 2011 and 2015 Heritage in the Garage!
I learned a lot by watching your videos on oil change…
Thank you very very much
😉👍
Glad the video helped! And thank you for checking it out!
Love the video. Will be doing it on my 08 softail heritage

Thank you for this video I just got a heritage classic and want to do alot of maintenance myself this video realy helps alot.
At the very end of the video the last time you checked the motor oil, you cut the video short if the dipstick says, you have to check it on the side. What was your final result with it on the Jiffy stand?
if you look at the bike on the lift at 20:43 the bike was on the jiffy stand..you can clearly see how the front wheel is sitting in the chock crooked.
Very good video on the 3 hole oil change. Hes very informative. Thank you. Keep it safe.
Thank you Rick!
One of my good buddies is a dealer so we get the discount on the fluids that amsoil offers.
sorry for the late reply...we have been in sturgis and 100 mph since we got back and I'm just sitting down to do youutbe comments..the amsoil kits will need to be purchased through a dealer from what I've been told...one of my buddies is a dealer and that's where I get it but yes the oil kit is separate from the primary and trans..its not really a "3 hole kit" the oil kit comes with the oil, o rings and filter, then you will need the trans and primary also
GREAT ADVICE! Thanks for taking to time and $$ to make these vids!
Thank you Dusty! Much appreciated!
Informative video. Your statement about the Derby cover being difficult to remove is so true. I ruined my first Derby cover. Not sure why the factory installs them with a mig welder! Lol
yeah they do suck .,...broke a few bolts in my days lol...its horrible every time it happens.
Thank you
youll need a roughly 85-140 for transmission and you can find dedicated "primary" fluids everywhere
@@sikbaggers Thank you
How often would you do transmission flush/ change? I'm trying to learn Harleys. I finally stepped up from rice burners?
5000 miles Motor, 10000 miles primary, 20000 miles transmission..the best way to do it in my opinion is every other oil change, do all 3 holes and youll never have to worry about it or try to remember what you changed last lol
Hi ! Would it be possible to know witch horn or horn cover and air filter you have on this bike ? They look terrific ! Thanks !
I think the original design is Arlen Ness but its like 225 bucks so i found this one on amazon that was a little less than a 100 I think. amzn.to/3yjUEHe
Great job, easy to follow and this video should help others to feel confident on working on their own bike. Routine maintenance task.
Thank you! Just got my 1st harley and am trying to learn what to do.
Youre very welcome! And if you have any questions please let me know ill try to help the best i can, Be safew
@@sikbaggers I figure I will bug some of my old vet brothers, your video was very informative, you have a new subscriber! Thanks again!
Just wondering why you didn’t show clutch adjustment? Should be part of a softail primary oil change.
Great question and I think that is better done in its own video IF the clutch needs adjusted. This video was already pretty long. I'll try to get one made up soon.
Was doing some research on my 2007 Softail.
Per Transmission service bulletin M-1296 that applies to 96 CI six speeds:
Capacity is 32 oz, may only need 28 due to residual in trans.
Check level just rest the dipstick on the lip of the housing on side stand. Do not screw in.
aah yes...love those bulletins HD puts out..you were smart to look that up, specially on an 07..4 ounces can definitely make a huge difference.
man, cant say enough. beautiful video, beautiful presentation
thank you for checking it out!
Just added a 2005 Heritage Deluxe to my stable...great video and I look forward to many years of wrenching with you.
Thank you for checking them out Kim..any questions let me know,
