I have rebuilt dozens of engines, auto, and a few smaller bikes and just wanted to say this video is superb. Short, concise, clear and detailed. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the video! I've only been riding for 2 years, but been a shade tree mechanic since I couldn't afford to pay anybody to do my work since college. 😅 This is my first maintenance on my 2010 Harley Davidson Street Glide. Great to have you guys hanging out in the garage with me helping me do it for the first time.
I grew up with my uncle and my dad who worked on both Japanese and Harleys and vintage Indian (personal bikes, not a commercial shop). They did it as a reason to get together and hang out. They never ever visited a stealership. A top end job was a common occurance and watching and helping with a motor pull was fairly common as well. I learned how to do fluid changes quite early. As both were machinists and welders parts fabrication was easily accomplished. This is how i spent my life from 3 to my teens. I thought this was how it was. Now as a motorcycle owner myself (both Japanese and Harley) I feel blessed to have been brought up this way. I had a boss who took his Harley to the shop for fluid changes and even details and it blew my mind. But to those who were not brought up like I was have no idea the joys of doing these jobs yourself especially with the advent of UA-cam to guide you step by step.
These videos are one of many reasons why I shop at J&P you guys between these videos answering questions on message boards etc always do a great job of helping out he customer- I don't know of any other company that spends so much time and energy giving us the knowledge and tools to fix our own bikes- I hate the idea of owning a Harley and having someone else do my work. Part of owning a Harley should be the knowledge that you have done most if not all work on it.
I appreciate not only how thorough the step-by-step instructions were but the excellent camera work. Plus, the host/mechanic made it seem like not only something I could do, but something I would very much enjoy doing. Thank you!
Just two comments, Be sure to wipe off drain plug surface before replacing drain plug. Clean oil filter base and around front engine mount. It doesn't hurt to shove a rag under old filter before finally pulling it off. When all clean install new filter. Nothing worse than to have the bike drip oil for several days. Cheers!
Thanks for the video. I like to leave the fill cap on, then FIRST pull the drain plug. Not much oil come out, less mess, then when oil plug is clear, THEN remove the fill cap, let it flow. I also like the KN Oil Filters, it's all I use.
A) I always keep the dip stick in when I loosen the drain plug so I don't get a stream at first. This gives me control of the oil flow. B) I always change filter with drain plug out I feel it gives more air. I'm old school. C) I spray drain plug, oil filter housing wipe everything down with brake cleaner nice and clean. D) and lastly a nice card board box under there keeps oil off ur garage floor. Ride safe have fun.
I have an '02 Electra glide & these oil changes are pretty straightforward.. I do a couple of things different, I use an Allen wrench to remove the drain plug & use hi-temp grease like 'ant-seize' on the 'o' ring.. I've tried all sort of things to catch the oil when you remove the filter, seems like oil always drips down onto the front motor mount & reg.. I have had to replace one motor mount already b/c it was worn out due to oil saturation. you didn't mention how often the oil should be changed I usually go 5k or 1 yr., whichever comes 1st..
Of course the dealer told me this was very difficult to do. They said it's not like changing oil on a car, which I do lol. This video looks like it's exactly the same.... I have a 2011 Wide Glide, I'm assuming the procedure is the same?
I can relate. When I was a kid in the sixties dad would dump the used oil in our dirt alley to keep the dust down. Early on in my 34 year Air Force career as an aircraft mechanic we weren't always environmentally concerned. Fortunately that all changed and recycling became second nature.
Hi Patrick, I have a problem and maybe you can help me ... I have a 2008 street glide and the other day I changed the battery ... I removed the main fuse and then the battery. When I mounted the new battery and put the main fuse back on and I tried to start the bike, the alarm started instantly ... the fob was next to the motorcycle, I had to wait about 15 minutes for the alarm to stop by itself. what can I do?...best regards
2 comments Is it basically the same doing the oil change on a 2013 triglide ultra classic second question should I put oil in the filter before putting it back on or allow the motor to fill it period
I have a BMW and even if you change the oil yourself you have to take the bike to the shop so they can reset the service indicator warning. Does Harley have any type of warning indicator that needs to be reset? Thanks!
I have a 99 king that i just for the 2 time replaced the oil pump and can plate. how do i get all the dirty oil flushed COMPLETLY FROM THE CASES ,PAN ECT?
technically you can, but it's going to be hard to get the drain pan in place and get to the drain plug. Worse case get someone to sit on the bike and keep it upright.
If it's not necessary to rush the oil change I'd let the "Thin Stream Run All Night" as that oil is holding the nasty's that we are trying to get rid of - Drain the old oil after today's ride and fill it back up tomorrow - Even just 30 minutes is very helpful for those last few ounces that hold the problems of the last few thousand miles - Just my suggestion
Although my background is with the metric bikes (don't chase me out of here guys), I understand from my Harley friends that there are actually three different places and three different oils to be changed. Supposedly there is the engine oil (the one demonstrated above?), the transmission oil, and the primary oil. Do you have an explanation for the other two oils and locations? Thanks.
My local Harley dealership wants $278 to do an oil change does that seem normal for most or is my local dealership just trying to get rich on a simple procedure
corey sanchez - I am definitely no expert on this stuff, but I saw that discussed on another oil change vid as preferred, so the engine doesn't run briefly without oil. But, it looks like it's only possible to pre-fill the filter if the filter hangs downward (or all the oil pours out).
You should only tighten oil filters by hand, there is no need to ever use any tools to tighten an oil filter. Oil filter tools are for loosening the filter only.
Fill the oil up with the filter off. Then start the bike up and watch the oil go thru the filter hole. When the oil is clear stop the bike. That’s the way u change oil!!!!
hi Patrick, what happened if we accidentally take out the Alan-Hex nut and the oil drained thru it? Could we put the Alan-hex nut back (and drain it more with the drain nut) and continue filling in with the new oil, or do we need to concern something else? Thank you in advance. Erni
I'm assuming you have a 2016 Fat Bob? It will be very similar to this. Try looking around our channel, lots of good stuff on there. ua-cam.com/video/k-GyRDst7Y8/v-deo.html
What type of oil did you use. Amsoil is expensive. I am not about spending money on marketing BS. Just like good whiskey, doesnt have to be $100 bottle.
chris Bozarth. NICE management there NOT!! that's ridicules on that price! they roll it up on a bike stand easy access and less than 1 hour! GUY'S hear tell me pluse you do it every day you have everything ready to go. I changed all 3 of mine but I wasint on the clock I had hour 45minutes taking my time on the ground witch is harder to get to it. AND all 3 oil casket and oh rings. $110 buck's out the door! I'd call around and ask some friends see if they might no some one. our bite the bullet intell you find someone good luck and ride safe.👍

When you pour oil, flip the bottle so that the spout is at the top. This gives a smoother pour with no gulps.

Being able to do your own work is great but hanging out with your family and learning is the best.

When the local dealer wants $240 to complete this task. This is outstanding and simple. Thank you.

Concise, informative, good video lighting and angles, good narration
Nice job, Patrick..very helpful! Looks easier on your platform lift. Still doable by this 62 yo man on garage floor! THANKS !CH
Thanks guys! I am old old school. Last oil change I did was on a shovel with the old oil tank and dry sump. You video was helpful!
Great service videos from J&P. Very helpful. No BS.
Excellent vid Patrick. You are an awesome instructor. Thank you for your vids.
Happy to help
- Patrick
Thanks Bro. Been a few years since I changed my own fluids but since retired gonna start doing again. Need to pick up a torque wrench.
Nothing is more satisfying than doing your own service and upgrades. After the wife of course.
Good Video and I know the feeling about working on your own bike. Two thumbs up.
Good video, my 2 cents, dont losen dipstick until drain plugs out. That way the hot oil wont gush out. Pull plug then losen dipstick. Try it
Hey that's a good idea.
Thanks for the video, saving money doing it myself, the break in period I let Harley shop do it 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much, I thought is going to be more difficult but the way you explain it looks easy!!
you guys are the best I move down here from Massachusetts and I will only deal with you guys thank you very much
Thanks, my first Harley .Just like to be sure; great information.
Thanks for the video bud, I'm already heading to get oil
Of course the dealer told me this was very difficult to do. They said it's not like changing oil on a car, which I do lol. This video looks like it's exactly the same.... I have a 2011 Wide Glide, I'm assuming the procedure is the same?
Yeah, they just want your money. Basically, if you can change the oil in your lawn mower, you can definitely handle changing your scooters oil.
The dealer wants to tell you it requires the "little guy" to run up the exhaust pipe and turn the special nut. His labor rate is expensive
dwheeler016 lol you got me to think about it good job!
Best tutorial video I have seen so far. My only request was you should define on the oil plug torque of inch pounds or foot pounds. Thanks
That's one question that popped into my mind as well
He said inch pounds in the video....
Hey this is great! I was going to take it to the dealer for a change but this is fantastic.
Awwww come on man😒
I love it. DONT go dumping your oil out back. This guy must know my shovel riding old man lol.
I can relate. When I was a kid in the sixties dad would dump the used oil in our dirt alley to keep the dust down. Early on in my 34 year Air Force career as an aircraft mechanic we weren't always environmentally concerned. Fortunately that all changed and recycling became second nature.
cool video on checking or changing the shifter arm an seal, thanx
Great video it helped me out tremendously, I'm trying to find a good digital torgue wrench, which brand are you using or recommend.
Before installing the oil filter do i have to fill it half way with oil?
When you go to put it on, you will spill it out. No!
Thanks for the video. Helped a lot 🤙🏻
Hi Patrick, I have a problem and maybe you can help me ... I have a 2008 street glide and the other day I changed the battery ... I removed the main fuse and then the battery. 6:30 - Smells like dinosaurs! good video as always. Thanks!
I cant find a video on changing the oil in the primary or tranny. Do you have one for those?
Do you have to warm the engine up before dropping the oil ?
Confused on type of torque wrench to get. What’s a good size/ brand i can use ? Thanks
Excellent
2 comments Is it basically the same doing the oil change on a 2013 triglide ultra classic second question should I put oil in the filter before putting it back on or allow the motor to fill it period
My dealer put 20w60 in my 2020 street Bob. Is it still OK?
Do you check the oil when is leaning or upright
Excellent video!
Thanks, I wish I watched this video first !So many other videos call for 4 quarts ! I had to drain 14 oz's :( Pain in the ass.
hi just wonder i been checking different oil changing video and found one that does a full purge whats your feeling about that idea
Great professional how-to,,,
I have a BMW and even if you change the oil yourself you have to take the bike to the shop so they can reset the service indicator warning. Does Harley have any type of warning indicator that needs to be reset? Thanks!
I have a 2001 heritage softail do i have to fill the oil filter half way with clean oil before putting it on?
Are you supposed to put oil in the oil filter before putting it on?? If not does it cause the bike to suck air before the oil run to the filter??
Hi Pat, I like the style torque wrench you use in the vid. Is that a JP product?
Do you recommend 2050 over 1040? I have an 07 Electra glide ultra classic
Get an owner's manual & follow it.
great video. thank you.
Is it not better to put some oil in the filter before installing.
That was a great help to me thanks
Hi I have a frankinstine trlke kit on a 2003 classic and i am wondering if there's a way to estimate oil level while bike is level thanx
Love to see How done on 2017 Trike!!!
Great video. Where can I find the service manual for a 2017 Road Glide??
Try E-bay. That's where I found the manual for my electra glide.
Will your universal chain guard kit work on my 1983 FLT?
Can you use brake parts cleaner to clean oil mess the filter removal caused?
yep. No problem
Is the torque wrench your using a 3/8drive or 1/2drive
How long do you let it run before you check it again?
Just a minute or so, we just want the oil to circulate all the way through the motor.
J&P Cycles Excellent. Thank you. Just wanted to be sure.
THANKS! I needed that.
I have a 99 king that i just for the 2 time replaced the oil pump and can plate. how do i get all the dirty oil flushed COMPLETLY FROM THE CASES ,PAN ECT?
Clean living !
Great video!
Can you change the oil on a 2007 ultra classic with it on the jiffy stand or do you have to have a stand? Thanks any information. Great videos
technically you can, but it's going to be hard to get the drain pan in place and get to the drain plug. Worse case get someone to sit on the bike and keep it upright.
I do mine in blocks
If it's not necessary to rush the oil change I'd let the "Thin Stream Run All Night" as that oil is holding the nasty's that we are trying to get rid of - Drain the old oil after today's ride and fill it back up tomorrow - Even just 30 minutes is very helpful for those last few ounces that hold the problems of the last few thousand miles - Just my suggestion
Patrick, how would you check the oil level on a trike?
Same procedure, aside from not being able to put it on the jiffy stand.
Great instructional vid! Thanks!

J&P Cycles. Thank you for your timely reply and information.
Could there possible have been a problem with the link as there are no videos available at the link given below?
ua-cam.com/video/mRv1jn5K-gM/v-deo.html Try that
thanks for the cool video.

Fill it about a third to half full
I have changed oil on many different machines, and have never tightened an oil filter with a wrench. you are asking for trouble if you do.
Thanks!
Checked the oil after dealer changed lubes. Oil barely hits the dip stick! Shame on me for not checking myself but i'm still pissed.
thank you for the info..
Can I use synthetic oil instead of regular oil?
sure
You should only tighten oil filters by hand, there is no need to ever use any tools to tighten an oil filter. Oil filter tools are for loosening the filter only.
Gap for Sparks plug for Harley davison2015
Between 38 and 42 thousandths
cool thats the same color as my 08 Dark Blue Pearl
Why isn't the front tire an "automotive" style tire?
No pre fill filter ???
I prefer 20w50 dino too.
Fill the oil up with the filter off. Then start the bike up and watch the oil go thru the filter hole. When the oil is clear stop the bike. That’s the way u change oil!!!!
put half of a quart in filter before installing makes ti a lot easier on the oil pump
Oil on drive way keeps dust down

Could we put the Alan-hex nut back (and drain it more with the drain nut) and continue filling in with the new oil, or do we need to concern something else?

Erni
My wife glide calls for 3 quarts.
For some reason. 2 1/2 half is almost too much
So you don't need to pour a little in the filter first
was that 14 inch pounds or foot pounds
the drain plug is 14-21 foot pounds
So many reasons why I wouldn’t let this guy no where near my scoot with a wrench 🤦🏼♂️

Put oil back in empty oil cans..
They told me that it was hard to do and cost 300 dollars for basic oil change.
chris Bozarth. should be more like 200 plus tax. try and find a shop that works on Harley Davidson bike's THEY are usually allot LESS!
John Kolinoff that was the Harley shop I bought my bike from
chris Bozarth. NICE management there NOT!! that's ridicules on that price! they roll it up on a bike stand easy access and less than 1 hour!
