    So I had to make dimsum for class (I major in culinary :D) and I can tell you this stuff is crazy hard to make, the har kao itself could take a good 3-4 hours and that's with no mistakes,
    Anywho, just a random post lol.... video's making me crave dimsum to a new extreme though

    Checked out Atlantic dim sum yesterday. Best dim sum I have had! Your review was spot on. My wife and I walked out of there pleasantly satisfied, yearning to go back, and she turns and tells me "we can officially trust Fung Bros reviews" I can't wait to hit up dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong next year.

    wow, that's the first time I see someone having mustard while eating dim sum :) I love 豬腸粉 and that's the main reason I want to go, but what I've noticed is whenever I go there with my husband (he's from HK, I'm white) with the cheap ($) items they go to my husband, but with special dishes made to order ($$$$) they always approach me like they hoped I can convince my husband to order a piece of 芥蘭 I can make at home by myself for 8 dollars. Not gonna happen :)

    In my homeland of Wide Open Spaces, sun burnt land of Australia. We deep fry a version of the dim sum. When you order it you say 'dim sim'.A dim sim is a Chinese-inspired meat or vegetable dumpling-style snack food, popular in Australia and to a lesser extent in New Zealand. The meat variety dish normally consists of small amounts of pork or lamb, cabbage and flavourings, encased in a wrapper similar to that of a traditional shumai dumpling. The Dim Sim was developed in Melbourne by Chinese chef William Wing Young for his restaurant "Wing Lee" around 1945.

    I don't mean to take these kids to school but...
    The BBQ buns are actually coated with sweetened butter NOT honey
    The "unknown" jelly is actually a combination of different herbal ingredients like goji berries, flowers and other Chinese medicines.
    Many places around the world where they have dim sum now serve it 24/7 but it is traditionally a brunch food.
    A lot of these things are easy to make at home, but who wants to make 20 servings for 2?
    芥末酱 jie mo jiang is mustard sauce in mandarin. Not to be confused with jie cai which is the actually root.

    In Hong Kong, the best time to go to Tin Ho Wan, the 1 Michelin star dim sum restaurant is around 5:00 to 5:30PM (early dinner) on weekdays. The wait time is around 5 to 10 minutes in that small window and after that, you might have to wait an hour or more to get inside.

    It's nice to get there early - most open at 10:30 am, but I've noticed that if you go too early, most of the good Dim Sum is not out yet. Also if you go too late, like at 12 pm, you could end up in a line up! Best time.... 11:15 am! That way you can skip breakfast, and enjoy a good lunch. (Brunch)

    Do Americans call it Dim Sum? In Australia we call this type of meal Yum Cha

    • @TianaLam

      In English u call it dim sum, but in canto. U call it yum cha

    • @SandyKeomany
      @SandyKeomany 9 років тому +4

      In New Zealand we just call it yum cha too

    • @MidnightBlackHorse
      @MidnightBlackHorse 9 років тому +4

      It can be both. My family sometimes says both of them, but we might say one or the other only. Yum cha means "Drink tea" and Dim Sum is the Chinese equavalent of a buffet, not like those American style ones.

    • @leok1126
      @leok1126 9 років тому +2

      So it's like Buffet and the food you get.
      Equivalently, Meal = Yum Cha, the food = Dim sum
      So because back in the days when the empire drinks tea, he felt like he needed something to fill along the tea,
      so people made dim sum( 'Dim' can mean dot,point,small; While 'Sum' means heart-- which i dont know how it ended up in that name) instead of a full meal.
      So since Aus has mostly Canto people, Aussies got it right when saying "lets go Yum Cha"
      or "have dim sum'
      Ten points to the Aussies xx

    • @aman888
      @aman888 10 років тому +13

      Agree. The soy sauce is really for non Asians who need to slather it on everything to make it saltier than it should be.

    • @drifter091
      @drifter091 10 років тому +15

      Although Chinese cuisine is a lot about balance, they put a lot of thought into the marinade and how ingredients work together. To have someone douse it in super salty soy sauce (which is actually a seasoning for cooking and not a dipping sauce since you have specific sub-sauces kikkoman makes n etc) is kind of ruining the balance.

    • @dicksonteoh

      shanghai dumplings are dipped into black vinegar with sliced ginger, soy sauce is for chee-cheong-fun albeit that soy sauce is special made

    We have an all day dim sum place in NYC's very own Chinatown called "Dim Sum Go Go". It's less traditional in that there is no carts with food just rolling around all the time. And yes, I love to eat dim sum, but it's really hard for me to do that at one of the traditional places since I do not speak Canto (what is most common in NYC Chinatown)...well actually I don't speak any Chinese dialect. I hope to learn one day...I learn little by little since I work in Chinatown, but it can be hard. What i love about Dim Sum Go Go is that there is a written english and Chinese menu with pictures to help me when choosing. Also you guys didn't talk about Shui Mai....which I wanted to know about but it's okay :)

    The hand sign to ask the bill actually does the same thing too in Indonesia, especially restaurant in the big city such Jakarta, Surabaya, etc.
    Just make eye contact with the waiter/waitress, then gesture your hand in the air like signing or make a square.
    Love dim sum! Xiao Long Bao, chicken feet and Jang Fan! (sorry for the mispelling)

    Dim sum is the best because it's awesome and you don't need to wait very long for the food but usually you have to wait for the tables one time it took around 50 minutes to get a table

    In Canada, we have the checkboxes with the dim sum in different categories, they also come with fried noodles and different dinner dishes as well to keep up with demographics. Dim sum is for families. So after checking the boxes, there’s a receipt for it for the orders at some part of the table and if you want more, you can ask for another checkbox thing. The checkbox thing will have English translation underneath. Know your dim sum before ordering. Eventually you will have a type you like. You can tell where you stand eventually after going there more because dim sum is a place to establish social dynamics between people, whether it’s for business or for meeting friends and relatives or in-laws testing you if you can get along with them.
    Historically, 60s dim sum has the trays the ladies carry around for the tables, in the 90s there’s like the carts with the ladies yelling the dim sum there. Also, jello with coconut shavings and the paper umbrellas lol.
    If you wanna get on their good side, remember what the elders like, it means you’re very mindful and caring which translates to you respecting elders. Also get the check before everyone else, be sure everyone has gotten everything and pretty much done. In dim sum, leftovers is a thing. So discreetly make an excuse to go to the washroom and go to the reception to pay before the elders fight for the bill. Dinner is easier because the combos are already a done deal. People make excuses to get something extra mainly they still wanna get the check, don’t let it come to that. Pay before everyone else so that you have face. There’s a reason why the washroom is right next to reception. And the other side is the fish tank. This is important if you wanna establish dominance.

    Guys, if you ever come to Singapore, you gotta go to Swee Choon, it is a late night dim sum place which opens past 12am, it isn't the same experience cause they don't push carts around, you just order and they send to you, but it is a late night dim sum place that is super popular. :D

    Having been the token white guy in several Sunday afternoon dim sum situations, I really appreciate being with a large group of folks and having someone who can handle the ordering in Chinese. Watching this made me hungry.
