I am native Hong Konger, I can tell you that she is the bestese Cantonese tutor who I watched on UA-cam for couple of years, she is very well in Chinese traditional and language of use in HK way without any misunderstanding, she is very good both in Cantonese and English. Highly recommended for who want to learn true HK Cantonese.
As an English guy who knows absolutely nothing about Dim Sum, your guide blew me away. Thank you so much!! Amazing guide.
To avoid being ripped off, I would suggest you don't go to any Chinese restaurant in UK for dim sum
I watched this with my Asian mom and even she was impressed with how much you go into detail and how accurate you are.
Now, I'm going to share this video with my friends of different cultures.
And I'm craving dim sum.
Thanks for this video!!
This is awesome. I love the videos you guys make. Also someone here corrected the pronunciation of Worcestershire sauce as wo-tes-sure which is wrong. It's wuss-ta-sha. Stress on the first and the "a" is a schwa. (But then Ben could've told you that) :)
This guy is correct in all regards. :D
Ignore everyone else with their poor phonetic pronunciations of Worcestershire!
This makes me hungry
I used jyutping here because there are so many different variations. Worcestershire sauce is 'kip jup' which is usually served with the beef balls.
Great video! I wanted to add that for siu mai the pork meat should be "cut meat" (chopped by hand) rather than machine processed. The difference in texture is very noticeable! :)
Yes, you are right. I didn't go into too much detail about the other dumplings. But fun guo flour has more starch in it, that's why it's thicker and less clear, shark fin dumpling use skin that's more like wonton skin but not exactly. Either way it is not good if the skin is too thick and have the texture of rubber. Just want to clarify that.
Thanks for your suggestions! Will def check them out!
My parents are from Guangzhou so i pretty much live off of dim sum...and you also listed all of my favorite dishes. Your cantonese is amazing!! Keep making these wonderful vids!!!
Thanks for such magnificent articulation in transitions of the languages.
Actually many places don't use real shark fin, they just use vermicelli flavored as shark fin.
No Poop!!! Always a pleasure when you don't get shit in your dumplings. 👍😊
my whole family absolutely loves your chinese culture related videos!!!!!
Your awesome videos have added so much to our Hong Kong based Shadowrun game. Thanks, and keep making awesome stuff!
Thank you so much for your support! If we can get to 100,000 by the end of the year that would mean soooo much to us!
ha gau is life!!!
FireRabbit ikr
Agreed
Chicken feet is life
YES!
I know almost all of these because of my boyfriend and his family. The steamed sticky rice is my favorite. I was actually afraid to eat the chicken feet because I don't like trying new things but it's really good
it is so interesting and informative to find out that those steam buns and dumplings have similar equivalents all over the world(differences are in fillings, flour used, and looks).
In Poland where I am from there are steam buns(love them, will have to try Dim Sum restaurant when I will find a good one, good luck with that ) but they are not white(probably because no rice four is used) and I never ate them with filing.
It is either many people got the same idea, or the idea drifted, like paper.
I worked with a guy who would always as for 'Neopolitan Ice Cream' for dessert at Chinese restaurants. He loved to hear them say, 'We no have neroparita'.
Yes.... I realized. There's bloopers of it at the end too.
Watched this before going to dim sum for the first time in years! The lau saa bau were amaaazing.
I can't agree more.
Your video is very well organised starting with the most popular dishes.
Thanks for sharing.
Actually my favorite dim sum is some of what you've mentioned here. The Turnip cake is probably my most favorite, them followed by Rice Rolls, Char Siu Bau, and Shiu Mai :D Though sometimes fresh steamed Pork Dumplings with soy Sauce and that awesome roasted soy bean and chilli oil is perfect.
You make excellent Dim sum choices 😄
The bloopers give me life
you left out the fried taro its so good!!
I had the pleasure of eating almost an entire box of egg tarts and two pork buns in San Fran's Chinatown. Best. thing. EVER. I could live off this food.
never knew rice noodles where dumplings :D loved the prawn ones !
Thank you!!! Now I know what the dish I love so much is called. I love rice rolls!!!
When you said.. 'Worcestershire' all us BBC's were thinking... 'huh??' lol
I was blown away too when I tried it for the first time. And I had it in Asia so it was mind blown x 10000
My fav dim sum - har gao, fried turnip cake, century egg porridge, and siew mai. Salted egg buns too
That's good too!
Why is she not on this channel anymore? I love her!
I could listen to you talk about dim sum all day! Come to NY and eat dim sum with me at a very famous restaurant.
I love dim sum so that was really helpful! Thanks!
Its now 11:19pm and I'm watching this. You make me feel hungry.
So glad they are in Canto ( Cantonese ) so easy to understand :3
As a dongbei Chinese, I was actually surprised to find out the actual meaning of dim sum. In where I was from, I thought dian xin (same characters as dim sum) was usually referred to sweet stuff like desserts. Like dried fruits, 驴打滚, and stuff like that. Or maybe I'm just away from China for too long.
try editing the video lol! Was sooooo hungry while doing that....
Fung zaau and zin doei are probably my favorites. Who doesn't love some zin doei😍😍
CORRECTION: Worcestershire is pronounced WOOS-TER-SHUR. Not a big deal because I watched for the knowledge of Chinese culture, but I thought you might be happy to learn that English culture tidbit! Thanks for your videos!
1:31!!! OMGG THOSE ARE MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE!! whenever i go for 'tea'
TURNIP CAKE IS AWESOME
I LOVE egg tart , I always eat it when I have time before tutorial class
My personal favorite is the lap Cheung bun, its just so good if the lapcheung in it is good, white sweet fluffy dough with a salty slightly chewy piece of lapcheung with just a hint of
Yay~~ 兩件一盅" for a late breakfast is the best!
My favourites are 燒賣, 鳳爪, 豉汁排骨,芋頭糕 & 炸兩。And I always order 菊潽, too.
Awesome!
ahh.. forgot about that. Will do!
Sometime I call it ' Whats its here " sauce ! Ketjap Manis is a nice sweet salty version of Worcerstershire ! Great session!!
the tofu skin roll with shrimp is the best - YUM!!
To give you an idea, its basicly a white custard bun with the crumble from a pineapple bun ( po lo pau) on top. shaped like a lotus bun
Always the best OTGW video~
I love all dim sum!! It's really hard to choose one favourite. Maybe salty egg yoke bun cos of that salty goodness!!
i can't stress enough how much i love chinese food, ugh wish i had some dimsum now
This is the ONLY dim sum guide you will ever need!
well you guys are really good, keep it up! Also could you PLEASE do a guide to noodles....since i love noodles and I want to discover MORE. Thanks
You can get it via a VPN in the mainland. Also you can get it normally in HK, Macau and Taiwan.
Yeah, it's called shark fin but it's actually just vermicelli flavored like shark fin.
I would love if you would start writing the tones, since I only started learning Chinese it would help me sooo much!! :) btw I love your humor!!
Sounds like my fav Dim Sum place here in Seattle passes the test! They also do sticky rice with pork.
Mmmm BBQ pork buns...
Yeah, Harbor City in Chinatown does a great job. i love it
+Phil Bolton Where do you go? I go to a low key one, Duk Li Dim Sum
+Ryan Chu I go to a place called The Purple Dot here in Seattles Chinatown.
Phil Bolton purple dot is literally the block next to duk li!
+Ryan Chu no, purple dot is next to hk bistro, duk li is next to honey court parking lot at corner
This is Cantonese Jyutping so it's very different from Pinyin 4 tones that's why I took it out not to confuse ppl.
I watched this months ago when you first released the video in August. Funny thing is that now my mom emailed me your link with the forwarded subject "A Lesson in Dim Sum"
You guys are getting popular with the old school crowd who forward emails with video links!
My favorite is the Cheong Fan (rice rolls) - especially those with BBQ Pork (Char Siew inside) and 流沙包 (Salty Egg Buns)
that lipstick shade goes great with that colored shirt!
I should've clarified that in the video. They don't really use sharkfin anymore, it's more like vermicelli with shark fin 'taste'.
Growing up my Mom's college friend our "Aunt Annie" used to take us to NYC for dim sum every now and then, afterwards we'd explore china town's shops, etc. We used to get duck feet, now you can't get it anymore only chicken feet. I always liked it and I was a white kid who lived in NJ suburbs. I was so lucky as a kid that my parents knew a lot of people who had different backgrounds, Indian, Amish, Chinese, etc, because I got to experience a lot of great food and customs. I hate that a lot of people I know aren't really willing to try different foods, they are really missing something!
Yes, and you dip it in sweet sauce, peanut sauce, soy sauce etc. The other day I tried the same thing but with 牛脷酥 it was very interesting.
Now you can be a dim sum critic! lol
In Malaysia, 糯米雞 doesn't look the same as you described, chicken meat is below the 糯米 and they're put together to cooked in a aluminium plate
Thanks! I live in Oakland and we have a huge Chinatown with delicious Dim Sum!
I don't really like the dimsum in china town in Oakland, Alameda has a really good dim sum though
+minighi200 it's cheaper in Oakland!
@@minighi200 yessssssssssss
Thank you! It's hard to explain some of the things, I actually had to consult some family members to understand the right terms etc.
My favorite are the durian pastries! The ones that look like mini croissants but have a durian filling in them :)
Love the shrimp roll wrapped in soy milk skin, yuu kao (fish meatballs), the flaky taro pastry stuffed with meat and mushrooms, dou fu fa (tofu pudding), and gau choi gaau (chive and shrimp dumplings) :D Major foodie :P
I'm sooooooo hungry now!!!!! Great vid! Maybe do a video on different teas and their tastes?
Oh my goshhhhh. I'm a Malaysian Chinese studying abroad and this vid makes me miss home + proper dim sum!
best video on all of UA-cam
My best friend is CRAZY for Dim Sum - thank you thank you thank you!
Our fav is the BBQ pork buns, we used to go downtown NYC and pick up boxes and freeze them for later. YUM! haven't had some in quite a while...time to get my cook books out. lol. TFS
I love sesame balls! its my food addiction
The worse thing in some dim sum dishes is that they pump up the filling content with pork fat. So if you put a shrimp dumpling ro something with seafood or pork in your mouth you get a really bad pork fat smell/taste. Some places uses a lot of MSG that makes you tired and thirsty and maybe a headache.
they also make egg tart with buttery " american style" cookie dough. actually it's not uncommon if you go to a bakery in HK ; and they would ask you which type do you want.
Two of my favorites are ma ti gao and xian shui jiao. Delicious!
Very good guide! Loved it? Thanks
Wow you sound so professional!
All of those things are a must when you're having dimsum!
I am so asian and chinese yet!! I have so much to learn from you guys. Worth subscribing. (Y)
I miss going to yum cha so much during this lockdown!
Bean sheet roll, I can't get enough
it's so warm to hear u speak Cantonese :)
Man that looks good. And you look even better
I really like mango pudding and that sweet tofu dessert (I have no idea what it's called in English) This video made me so hungry. I love these foods so much. Maybe because I'm canto and my family goes out to eat dim sum a lot...
LOLL "aint no time for that" XD you're awesome carmen!! :D
Should we make a video guide to tea?
someone told me that back when the sauce was discovered a man asked "What's this here sauce?" but he said it so fast that it sounded like "war-chish-sher sauce?" and since then, it's been called Worcestershire sauce and pronounced "wa-chish-sher." I don't know if that story is true or not but it helps me pronounce it right.
lo mai gai is so good, it's filling but I could probably eat a ton by myself. Great video.
What a confidence I went with my family to a Chinese restaurant to have dim sum. Thanks for loading
wer-ster-sher
Many English place names are not pronounced the way they are spelled.
