Love John and love this “series”. It’s great to be able to see what the “newest” tech is and how close it’s getting to the old style. I think these sound great.
I have Ampero 1 and their amp simulation is crazy good. I did a lot of comparisons between it and other multi effects and I think apart from the really expensive systems like Kemper, Ampero has the most dynamic and open sounding simulations to the major amps. The acoustic simulation is also notches above other pedals. You can also do custom IR on cabs and there's a global EQ too. This is a crazy value.
Really? I thought this unit sounded worse than most units. I need no comfort about the Hotone Ampero. Maybe a the Neural Quad Cortex or stuff like that...maybe.
you noted the difference in dynamics between the amp and digital unit. transformers are slow devices and tube amps are slow to react to transients introducing compression when the signal changes quickly and significant current is required quickly . solid state amps have less sag and this is one of the major differences in sound. The ampero 2 has a sag control in the power amp parameter section that can be changed. Perhaps you could try to see if increasing the ampero sag this would match the dynamics better. I have a digital unit without a sag control and achieve the same thing by making sure my compressor responds as quickly as possible to pick attack or other transients and effectively compresses the first few milliseconds...It sounds much more analog that way...same can be done with solid state amp.
Great video as always! Thanks. I wish processing power was one of the main items highlighted as that is always going to be the limiting factor for a more future proof device. I'll also add as both a digital and analog (amp/pedal) users, sometimes the multi-effects can give you analysis paralysis trying to match every song to a specific tone, opposed to having one amp and 1-2 drive pedals and making songs work within those confines. 98% of the time the listener doesn't know you weren't using the same amp as the original song used.. they just know clean and dirty sounds.
Great video! Only 2 things prevented it from being perfect: using IRs in the Ampero as well (if not hte same as the Boss Expander, at least a similar one), and matching the volume recorded (probably it was ok in the room).
John Cordy has a comparison of the Ampero 2 Stomp against a Quad Cortex, probably the king right now, and it competed great on tones. Crazy good value in these.
Great demo / review. Digital John is a great addition to th A team! And this Ampero II has a lot of going for it. I own the Ampero 1 and all I can say it is great. Find an IR that you like and the amp sims will sound and feel awesome. Or even better, run it to FX return of a tube amp + cab.
I have the older full size Ampero myself. Hope they release this new one in the same form factor with all the outputs and the expression pedal. The firmware in the new one is far superior to the old one! What a great update over the old Ampero!
@@ParaBellum2024 This unit is great in my opinion and having this one and also the stomp and the headrush…. i personally never found myself tweaking anything, neither doing presets, saving patch. About this unit, i can say is good :)
The true beauty of these units is the compact form factor. Traditional tube amps may end up sounding better but come with the penalty of cost, weight and size. In the end you are comparing a product which costs £3-400 with one that costs £3-4000. For most players they don't gig, they don't need to blast huge volume but want to sound like the real thing when playing a wide variety of music. These modellers do that. One moment you can sound like Kurt Cobain and the next like Paul McCartney, or whoever. You could even line up separate patches for you favourite 100 songs knowing that you can come back to it repeatedly with the same settings. You can't do that with a traditional amp.
would love to see a video comparing the Hotone Ampero Stomp II vs Line 6 HX Stomp vs Headrush MX5 vs Valeton GP-200 vs Boss GX-100. All on their latest updates at the time of recording.

Nice! I requested this in the previous video, though I bet this was already recorded! I sold my Fractal FM3 for this unit. I disliked the FM3 interface and I just couldn't be bothered to dig into the deep settings in the to get that extra 10% or whatever sound quality. The Ampero II Stomp was simpler to dial in, not as high quality in some of the sims, but still sounds great and it has a more powerful powerful signal chain. More than good enough for my bedroom playing, especially at half the cost. I'm loving it so far. The only thing that I wish they kept from the first unit was the drum machine.
@@senorchivo90 Thanks for that. I was hoping for a USB C to USB C cable type connection from the unit to a smartphone with a dedicated app. I use a similar cable method with my Zoom ms-50g pedal to my phone using the ToneLib Zoom app. So easy to use via smart phone to make new patches or tweak settings. Cheers
Thanks for this (very entertaining) video / i bought one and put pit on my pedalboard. I has a few features that really make this box run circles around other multi effects pedals. Besides amazing sounds and very very low noise - there were three features that pushed me over the edge. 1) easy to bypass in signal chain, as you would any effects pedal, 2) has a global setting to turn off amp modeling, cab IRs or both on all patches so you can plug directly into amp - HX stop and Tonex can’t do this btw, and 3) works great with my strymon power supply system which delivers 500ma at 9, 12, or 18 V. Manual says ampero needs 800ma but it works perfectly at 500ma and 18VDC!
I bought one of these. I setup a clean amp on it with effects I would use, then using the 4 cable method I got a kraken v4 preamp and bypassed the clean amp on the ampero for all my gain tones. So ended up with best of both worlds. But its epic really , full rig with just two pedals.

I'm quite sure everythng has been well set ( mean cable with the right in out return send....)(chck and recheck) Do you have some patches to send me just to test and understand ? That's would be nice. Thanks
So for cables, guitar into ampero , then ampero send to you amp input , then amp send to ampero return , and ampero output to your amp return. On your patch , you need to add a block fx loop to the signal chain.
Sounds really good imo. I bought a pod go . I've found all the different possibilities off putting and too complicated for my old self. Kinda just want to play guitar and they are just too overwhelming. Sucks because I know if I spent the time to figure it out I could do whatever

I was gigging last night. Must have adjusted the knobs on my pedals three or four times in the set. That's what would scare me about these units, I can't go into a menu.
I'm guessing you can hook up to a PC or Mac and alter the presets?. What's the software like?. Why has it not got a pedal like the earlier Ampero model?.
Yes you can. The software is very nice and easy to use. It doesn't have a built-in pedal because it's a "Stomp" model, like the HX Stomp. You can connect any expression pedal you want to it anyway, so I personally prefer the Stomp format.
I want to put this on my desk and run my pedal board into it to use the looper, amp and IRs for my DAW. If the computer UI is easy to use, I might use it on the floor but I really like the idea of using this as a desktop recording interface and looper. The way the cables route should work well for my desk as well.
I don't mind that the amps and cabs are not automatically matched. On the boss IR 200 I find it annoying that I always have to go find my favorite 2 or 3 cabinets no matter what amp I am on.
I wonder how I could connect my Multi FX Pedal at home. I tried a cheap FRFR Speaker and it sounded very bad. Thinking about the LANEY Speaker also FRFR....
Great review! I'm one step closer to pulling the trigger. Thanks! It would be great to demo bass (with digital bass rigs) and acoustic guitar (with acoustic IRs). Thanks again. Great job as usual.
Pair this up with a solid cheap tube head like a blackstar or bugera for just the power amp with a effects loop to bypass the preamp, with a 2x12 or whatever... Think this is a force to be reckend with. Make this happen andertons I bet loads of folks have the same question
im thinking of buying the ampero stomp. but i need 2 external pedals in the fx chain. do you know if you can connect 2 pedals using trs to 2 ts cabbles to route 2 pedals in the fx loop? i see in the manual tha you can choose l in and r in separately.
What about a “blindfolded” challenge of one or two of those classic boutique amps vs their own IR into the ampero; both through the same cabinet. ooooooohh...
Does anyone know what brand/model the pink guitar behind Captain is? I just realized I posted the same question a year ago. Came back to watch the video randomly and had the same impression about the guitar. Then it came to me I already asked :D BUT NO ONE KNOWS what the guitar brand is :(
Ampero is brighter so if u compensated for that it gets very close to the valve amp but at same time from my ears the valve has a feeling of body and size as opposed to the ampero sounds a little thin at those settings....I have to believe that the feel is the same thing...
Captain Lee! Can you guys do a video showing how this compares to a POD Go in a home USB recording AND Re-Amping setup? That's how I want to use these and can't make up my mind between this and a POD GO. The Ampero II looks cool with it's dual-amp path (I assume you can take a single guitar input and get a discreet dual amp output? - AND would this also be doable when re-amping over USB?) This is a plus over the POD Go in my mind but I do love that POD Go. Also with the POD Go, are presets interchangeable with the software and the Helix plugin (which I have)?
You can go dual amp on a single input, yes. You can also use the two inputs to process two guitar simultaneously. I did that to jam with a friend and it was great. You just have to be wary of running out of DSP when running two amps and a lot of effects, but the latest firmware has improved the DSP headroom quite a bit.
9:44 Is that true? I don't have a Helix. I mean I guess it's a few years old at this point, but that thing is still their flagship. If it's running out of CPU with new updates, that kind of sucks.
Yeah, I mean there’s always a point when you could not add more stuff to your chain. In most cases it’s long after you’ve reached the limits of good taste. 😂
Crazy good demo. now you got me interested to the point I want one.I have a 50w katana mk2. Am I needing to sell that and get some type of head and cab,set of monitors?needs to be house/ bedroom friendly
I briefly had the first version of the Ampero One, and a Mk1 Katana 50. Both gone now, but for me the Katana was better for home, I used the USB output so that it acted as an interface to my computer. The amp can be totally silent that way with monitoring by headphones or speakers, so very home friendly. The switches on the Ampero were too confusing for me in practice, each button having multiple functions and colours to match. I was lost, tap dancing on the switches trying to loop, ending up in reverse mode somehow and I could not stop it. In the normal standing playing position the screen was too small to be seen easily. You might prefer the Ampero though nice to have the choice.
@@yukishredder oh good! Yeah that should bypass everything except the power section. You probably want to turn off the cab sim when you use it. I don’t have a katana, but I’ve seen loads of ppl online who really like that aspect of the V2.
On my nux mg300 I play interchangeably via direct to headphones and sometimes into my amp's Poweramp input. I can easily change the mode on it so the cab sims are disabled when I use my amp. Does the ampero have a similar feature or do I need to turn on/off the cab in the ampero effects chain with each patch?
We've reached a point where I want these units based on liking the way they sound, not just the convenience. I'm leaning towards this over a POD Go since I already own Helix Native. Since the POD Go series are the same sounds as Helix Native, one of these would be at least "different". I'm a home enthusiast only. No live stuff. These units are just pure fun in a box. The biggest downside tech-wise for this one is the 44.1 sample rate only. Sure that's actually plenty, but for interfacing with our existing IO and creating aggregate devices and such, forcing our hand at 44.1 is a bummer and does create some limitations. If this thing operated at even 48k I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought and I'd just order it. But I do other sound work professionally at 48k and having a device that won't even do 48k would create problems for me with my other gear, and how I want to work. Maybe a firmware update can allow 48k. One can hope.
We made a small mistake at 15:19 It is possible for the cab to automatically change according to the amp model you chose!

Pair this up with a solid cheap tube head like a blackstar or bugera for just the power amp with a effects loop to bypass the preamp, with a 2x12 or whatever... Think this is a force to be reckend with. Make this happen andertons I bet loads of folks have the same question
Would be fun video idea
I know that with IRs you can convert your sound... but what about delays and reverbs... is this Pedal good?
Are you guys going to bring back “Sound Like” - that was a great Anderson’s feature!
im thinking of buying the ampero stomp. but i need 2 external pedals in the fx chain. do you know if you can connect 2 pedals using trs to 2 ts cabbles to route 2 pedals in the fx loop? i see in the manual tha you can choose l in and r in separately.
Does It work as a standalone Digital modeler on stage like the ampero ?
Is there a sound cut when you change presets like in the old Ampero?
what if you want to turn effects on and off (like an overdrive) while looping? is that possible?
Yep, that’s possible too!
What about a “blindfolded” challenge of one or two of those classic boutique amps vs their own IR into the ampero; both through the same cabinet. ooooooohh...
Digital John😅its cool Lad like you all boys😉you are better then netflix 100000times better🙂
Anything that tells you POO 1 when you switch it on deserves to be purchased
so quad cortex vs ampero stomp?
Damn, LOVE the Digital John name
😥.... I've been Digital Chris for years but nobody loves ME ......
Does anyone know what brand/model the pink guitar behind Captain is? I just realized I posted the same question a year ago. Came back to watch the video randomly and had the same impression about the guitar. Then it came to me I already asked :D BUT NO ONE KNOWS what the guitar brand is :(
Not gonna lie, the Tube Amp sounds WAYYY better...just me and not a tube snob at all :)
Ampero is brighter so if u compensated for that it gets very close to the valve amp but at same time from my ears the valve has a feeling of body and size as opposed to the ampero sounds a little thin at those settings....I have to believe that the feel is the same thing...
I accidentally removed a preset p31-2 How can I get this back again? is this possible?
What is the pink guitar behind Captain ?
@@RicHSAD2 Cheers!
that 'mysterious' AI Gate is based on the ISP Decimator, so no wonder it's amazing
9:44 Is that true? I don't have a Helix. I mean I guess it's a few years old at this point, but that thing is still their flagship. If it's running out of CPU with new updates, that kind of sucks.
Yes and no. New reverbs or polyshifters are using more DSP but it's nothing to worry about, you still have plenty of power.
Doesn’t the mk2 Katana have an input for modelers? Or is that only in the 100?
@@Newnodrogbob thank you for that.ive just checked the manual and and it says to use the POWER AMP IN jack at the rear.
