    Nice to see that furnaces haven’t changed much in the last 15 years, anatomically speaking. I installed a Luxaire about that long ago and the ONLY issue I’ve had with it was the pressure switch after several years. I was told the original switches used some sort of tubing that corroded the contacts within. No idea if that’s true. Usually a reset would work for a few days and it would glitch again. After a few rounds of that I simply replaced the assembly and no issues since. I remember when we got this furnace it looked like miniature server rack. Nice beefy doors with some fancy vent trim along the edge and tool free removal. Grab the two knobs and lift. The only odd thing I’ve noticed is the flame roll out on the right hand side of the flame box would be a challenge to service.

    I've had a Carrier High Efficiency furnace for 20+ years and never had a problem until the heat exchanger went out. Live in the Seattle area, so our furnace is on from mid-Oct to mid-June (yes, it's cold in June here).

      New Carriers aren't what they used to be. The old MVPs were pretty good. Unless you had the all too common heat exchanger failures, other than that they were good. It's the new ones you have to watch out for.

    Yeah, I really like the Rheem/Ruud equipment but I couldn’t find a narrow 21” 5 ton Rheem coil anywhere. Right before the pandemic hit, a local supply house put its Goodman equipment on sale so I saved about $700 buying the Goodman equipment plus they had the narrow coil that fit in my utility closet. Mine looks exactly like this one, but is U96V. I have to replace the blower motor. Typically if the fan moves freely unrestricted, a $20 capacitor is all that needs to be replaced. But this motor has an internal capacitor, so when it goes, you must replace the whole motor. Checked my warranty, and this failed on yeqr 6 of a 5 year warranty, so I'm stuck with the cost. Hello! I'd really appreciate your opinion on these two systems I am considering: a Ruud with a U96V and a UA16-AZ vs. a Bryant Evolution 987M with a 189B that has a 19SEER2. The Bryant system is +$1375 more. I think the Ruud dealer is smaller but well known here in Midland, MI. The Bryant dealier is larger and been around for 25+yrs. The Ruud two speed vs modulating Bryant is the biggie. WE have a 2200 ft2 house, 2 story with a original furnace from 1979. Still works, but killer gas bills and electric in the summer. The Ruud dealer does 99% replacement furnace deals and may be slightly better on the install side. Thoughts? Thanks!!

    • @SmitHVAC.
      @SmitHVAC.  10 місяців тому +1

      I would do the Ruud hands down! You'll never make up the $1375 on the extra 1 or 2% efficiency from the bryant. Modulating equipment also tends to be more problematic and more expensive to repair. I've replaced so many modulating valves on carriers and the modulating vent motors are extremely expensive and often backordered (they fail often)

    • @DSmith-zf9es
      @DSmith-zf9es 10 місяців тому +1

      @@SmitHVAC. Thank you very much! I messed with the SEER calculator and that certainly aligns with the figures I saw. Spot on Sir! Do you think the modulating is going to provide that much noticeable additional comfort? Will the Bryant AC really make that much comfort difference in the summertime? I like the Ruud dealer, they ask for an annual svc call to keep the 10 yr labor warranty. Seems fair. The Bryant only has 1yr labor.

    • @SmitHVAC.
      @SmitHVAC.  10 місяців тому +1

      @@DSmith-zf9es No, you likely won't notice any difference in comfort with the mod system. A lot of times Bryant's have overheating issues when using the comfort profile, and end up being switched to efficiency profile anyways. Annual pm in exchange for 10 year labour is a pretty good deal. The Ruud is 100% the one I would go with.

      That being said, I believe the way Goodman manufacturers their primary heat exchangers creates weak spots at the bends. If I recall correctly from Rheem training, the way they make theirs does not create the same thinning of metal in the bends. They used to be stainless, but I’ve only ever found one heat exchanger failure on a Rheem that wasn’t from a tech likely carrying the furnace in wrong.
      They do occasionally have issues with their pressure switches, but out of all of the brands out there, it’s really minor problem in comparison, and a rare issue. It’s the most reliable furnace I’ve seen as well.
