Furnace Gas Valve Not Opening - How to Fix It
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лис 2024
- If your furnace gas valve is not opening or opening but not lighting the gas, this video will show you how you can fix it. I go over the furnace gas valve troubleshooting step by step and explain everything you can do to try to get your gas valve to start working properly again and igniting the gas. The reason I don't go into gas pressure adjustment is because the gas pressure on a gas valve does not adjust itself. If your furnace randomly stopped working, it is very very unlikely that the gas pressures changed. Those only change when someone was messing with them. I also did not go over checking or testing the gas valve resistance. That is because testing the ohms on a gas valve solenoid is not an accurate way to determine whether a gas valve coil is good or not. It is much more effective to test the voltage going to it instead. If there is power going in but the valve is not opening, then the gas valve is likely bad and should be replaced.

Here's another scenario for you (from personal experience). If the gas valve gets too cold it can tend to stick. For example if you go on holidays in the winter and set your thermostat really low (I was setting mine for 5 C / 41F) it can get cold enough that whatever lubricant is inside may get too gummy to allow the valve to move. After banging my head against the furnace for hours trying to figure out why it wasn't working (and watching all your videos on the subject!) I had an "ah ha!" moment and got a heat gun and warmed the valve up to a normal operating temperature and BINGO... working furnace!
Thanks so much for these videos. Because of them I've extended the life of my furnace by several years, fixed it several times (new blower, new flame sensor, unclogged sensor lines) and I'm not afraid to rip it apart and put it back together in order to find out whats wrong with it. You've probably saved me hundreds of dollars over the last 5 years!
That's a great tip! Thank you for sharing! I've heard that multiple times from people who were able to get it fixed like that. Glad to hear that my videos have been helpful to you throughout the years! Stay warm this winter my friend and may your furnace be problem-free for at least the next 10 years!
Jay, just love your instructional videos over the years. You’re one of the few techs that share real & accurate information for the homeowner. Learning home home appliances work is always great information, knowledge is power & that power can assistant when you need to call in a professional.
It’s that time of year again to start your furnace PM’s . When it’s the first 40 degree day is NOT the time to find out the furnace doesn’t start. Here in NYC, we no longer have a neutral period between AC and heat. It’s either one at all times.
Thanks again , Jay. Stay well 👍👍👍
Thank you for the reminder! I appreciate you stopping by for the new video my friend, stay warm with this winter!
In the last 20 years I can count on 2 fingers how many times I’ve liked and subscribed to a channel. I can’t say that anymore after today.
Beyond informative. Great delivery style.
Thank you sir! It's an honor.
I just replaced my valve and I'm getting gas to the valve, but nothing to the igniter. I I'm going to use this video to see if I can get it working. Thanks for this video. ❤❤
Thanks for the video, just fixed my gas valve cost me $200, Bonfe company is not cheap at all, even though I'm a member and paid $14 per month.
I’ve been working on my Amana for 3 days now. Replaced the valve and still no ignition. Had 26 volts at the valve and THOUGHT I had a click but no gas. Just tried your jiggle technique on the harness and bam, ignition. I can’t thank you enough. I was losing faith and now I just need a harness.
You're welcome! Glad to hear you were able to finally find the problem! That's always a good feeling.
This helped me figure the gas valve is my problem. I tapped on it and it started to work. Thank you! Little worried it might get stuck on, so I'm just going to leave it off until i can replace it
Your videos are so easy to follow and has helped myself fix my furnace issues twice, you take the time to explain everything so extremely well so a regular person like myself can understand I thank you so kindly for posting the so very helpful videos and information.
You're welcome! Good to hear that the videos are easy to follow and have helped you fix your furnace multiple times. Have a marvelous new week and stay warm this winter!
I had to save this vid because there is no way I'm going to remember how to do each thing on the long list of everything. Thx for filming this and sharing it.
You're welcome! Good to hear that the video qualified to be saved for later. 🙂
awesome video sir..when I jiggled the wires while the igniter was glowing the gas valve clicked and came to life!
Thank you! Glad to hear it worked for you. Stay warm!
Same here!
Thank you for help kept me warm at 3 A.M sticky gas valve GOD bless
Connector fitment problems are common in automotive circuits, too. A cheap tool that sometimes helps with that is an oxyacetylene tip cleaner, which has a set of abrasive probes of various size that can clean any oxidation on the contact surface. Often one can tweak the fitment by squeezing the female end of the connector tight so you don't have to jam something into the side. It's humbling to know that the most common problem with fitment is caused by the last tech, who stuck his multimeter probe into the female connector. I like your technique where any probing is done on the outside in, so the probe would make fitment tighter, rather than looser. A drag test later verifies a good mechanical connection.
Thank you for explaining in detail about the connector fitment problems! That really helps paint a clearer picture of what is really going on. I appreciate you stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the topic! Have a marvelous new week good sir!
Thanks for sharing master! You're one of the best teaching on UA-cam!!!!
I watch every one of your videos beginning to end with no apparent need. I am 100% sure that one day I will need something from one and will be ahead of the game! And yes Jay, I can not spell congadulations 😄
It's an honor that you watch my videos even though you don't actually need the information at the moment. Thank you! I am sure the day will come when the things you learned will save the day. I hope the congradulations bit at the end didn't come off as offensive instead of funny. 😅 I appreciate you stopping by for the new video, have a phenomenal new week, stay warm this winter, and may God bless you and yours!
Excellent video my friend. I really appreciate your style of handling the situation. Working on a job like this right now.
EDIT: Read other comments after making mine. It seems you're doing something right. Keep doing it!
GREAT videos !!! .... quick question. I'm a maintenance tech at a large apartment property. We have found many times instead of replacing the entire gas valve that we are able to just replace the electronic ( coil ) part. What are your thoughts on this ?? We've had 100 % success rate so far. Thanks !!
I think that's great! Where I worked we were always taught to replace the whole gas valve, supposedly for safety reasons but I'm thinking it's mainly because that makes more money and it's easier to order a whole gas valve instead of tracking down the coil. If it's the electronic part of the gas valve that is failing, I think it's great that you are only replacing the coils. Personally I applaud that!
Thanks again. You have a great clear voice. Your a great help without over doing it. Thanks so much for what you do for all of us. 👍🙂🎃
You're very welcome and thank you! That's nice of you to say that. I've gotten comments that hate on my voice so it's good to hear the opposite sometimes. 😊 Have a wonderful new week!
Thanks for the video ... apart from my igniter being removed and replaced, I banged on the gas valve with a rubber mallet and it fired up ... The gas valve gets stuck closed and that's why the furnace wont ignite. Is there some kind of repair kit to do a minor repair or is it rigged to where I have to purchase an entire brand new gas valve? Let me know, i would appreciate that greatly ...thank you.
Hey Jay, I had a similiar problem, turns out it was the gas valve. I originally thought it was a pressure switch issue because the error code was “low pressure switch failed open during trial for ignition”. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the switch or the exhaust , drain , tubes, etc . I’m just not sure why some furnaces do that where it gives you an error code , but it is something completely different. I’m still new into service but I guess you learn from mistakes ! It’s best to go by sequence of operation right ? Thanks Jay
I was getting e223 or e227 on a Lennox , low pressure switch failed opened
Oh that's an interesting one! Thank you for sharing! Yeah, sequence of operation is vital with furnaces.
GREAT GREAT GREAT VIDEO FROM CHICAGO IM YOUR #1 FOLOWING YOUR VIDEOS THANK YOU SO MUCH GOD BLESS YOU

Jay great work man 👏
Thank you sir! 😊 Glad you liked the video, thanks for stopping by!
Yes I’m having this problem and also I check the voltage at gas valve connector got 14 Volt instead of 24v
Control board failed or something else?
Is the control board blinking any error codes? From what you described, it could be a loose connection, bad transformer, or a bad control board.
1. Try wiggling the wire connectors as you are testing the voltage. Does that change the readings?
2. Test the secondary side of the transformer, how many volts is it outputting? If not 24-28v, then it's a bad transformer. (also verify that it is getting 120v going into it)
3. If you can't find any loose connections and the transformer is outputting proper voltage, then it's likely a bad control board?
Thank you
1 short and 4 long
Hello thanks for your videos, my furnace will turn on and reach the set temperature but when the room temperature drops it doesn't come back on. When it reaches the set temperature the blower motor stops but the inducer keeps on spinning indefinitely at a slower speed. I've replaced the air filter and changed the pressure switch and it still hasn't solved the issue. Do you know what else might be the issue? Thank you.
Sorry to hear about the furnace troubles! When this happens, have you tried checking if the control board is blinking an error code? It could be a tripped safety switch or perhaps the control board is failing.
@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you for for reply, yes the control board is blinking an error code. I'll check the safety switch and control board.
Very informative video!
Another great video as always. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice weekend
Thank you my friend! The weekend was good and may your new week be wonderful as well!
I'll share my furnace adventure from this past week. Simply put, its a gas furnace that would not ignite and heat the house. The thermostat would click to activate the start sequence. The "fan" that draws in air from the outside and blows the exhaust to the outside would turn on. But nothing would happen after that. Im not that handy, so after checking the ignitor...which looked good...i called the hvac repairman. He came out, checked stuff out, and thought the module/part that senses airflow might be the problem (not the gas regulator). He said there's a membrane in that module that may fail over time. So he replaced that part. But still it was a no- go. After he called a peer for other suggestions, he blew air from a tank canister into the exhaust pipe opening where it internally connects with the exhaust fan. (I know I'm not using correct terminology, but hopefully you can follow along.). Voila...it worked. He speculates spiders might have built webs that blocked that air flow enough to cause the problem. The spiders cost me almost $300 in labor.
Sounds like the tech didnt do his job. A pressure switch can be tested for correct operation using a manometer and verifying the pressure is enough to activate the switch.
@@lucidgaming1153 It's hard to find knowledgeable and ethical repair people for appliances, HVAC systems, autos, etc.
@@myidisinhim559yup most are just frickin salesman nowadays
Good to hear that they were able to get it fixed and my condolences to your wallet sir. Thank you for sharing your experience! I agree with the other commenters, that this issue could have been found before replacing the part but the problem you had isn't exactly a common one so I can't blame the tech, especially if he is relatively new to the field. May your furnace work problem-free for the next 10 years now. Stay warm this winter!
$300 for a furnace repair not bad at all
Mine will always light the pilot, but only sometimes light the burner. Duration of time the burner is lit is random. Sometimes even goes for a full cycle. Nothing seems to change how it is acting. ITs a Armstrong sx Ultra 80
Great video
Thank you sir! Glad you liked the video!
Congrats on another info filled vid Aloha from across the creek ... Thx
Thank you my friend!! Always good to see you here. Winter is coming! Especially in the land across the creek. 😄 Aloha from Hawaii, I hope you have a spectacular new week!!
I've been watching your videos, and I have an interesting one. My Furnace actually Turns on goes through the entire start up sequence . It actually starts up you feel the cold air coming through the vents, but after 3 minutes, I've timed it, the air stops blowing through the vents in the house and no heat comes out. The furnace continues to run, but like I said no heat comes out. I replaced the air filter and cleaned the flame sensor just for good measure, but still does the same thing. Any ideas? I've got a repair guy scheduled for Tuesday, just in case.
Sorry to hear about the furnace troubles! Is your furnace control board blinking any error code when this happens? Do the burners come on at all or no?
@@WordofAdviceTV no error codes that can see from the portal. But maybe I’m not looking in the right peep hole. I believe the burners come on. It gets through the entire start process but just before the heat kicks in cuts off and like I said runs for 2 more minutes before shutting off. Maybe I need to watch the entire start off process again with the lid popped off again.
@@growinginportland Is the blower motor coming on at all? It almost sounds like it is overheating and all you're hearing is the inducer motor running. The blower never comes on.
@@WordofAdviceTV I just took the lid off again. The gas valve is fine. The fans are blowing. It's the igniting. The flames never come on. This explains why it shuts off after 2 minutes. I'll check to see if you have a video on this. Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it.
The On/Off Switch on the front of the Gas Valve can get dirty. This prevents the gas valve solenoid switch from working when 24Vac applied (mine did). Turn off power and gas to furnace first. Check resistance between C and M spades on valve with connector removed. It should be OL in OFF and 50k Ohms to 25m Ohms in ON. If only reading OL then time to clean. Use electric contact cleaner sprayed into the switch while moving the switch up and down it. Retest with meter.
You're awesome.
Take care, and have a great day.
Have you moved back to the mainland? Minnesota? 👍🏻
We might eventually do so but for now I have to be content with a disconnected furnace in my garage. 😅 Still living in Hawaii.
Thank you! 👍👍👍God bless you!!!
You're welcome! God bless you and yours as well! 🙏
I Have found in older FAU that the solenoid in the valve is stuck. I tapped it and freed it.
Ah that's a good point! Tapping on the solenoid might actually be more effective than the body of the gas valve. Thank you for sharing!
Another awesome video thank you
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video!
I am not getting voltage on the gas valve. Looks like a bad circuit board. Trane XL 80 Where would you recommend getting the replacements from? Is it worth it getting the ones from ebay?
E-bay is good. It's rare that you get a bad part, just try to get one that allows returns just in case.
Make sure you get the correct part number from the control board. I have a trane xl80 and ordered 2 incorrect models before getting the correct 1. Should be number,number-M-and 3 numbers after that
Thanks Jay
You're welcome. And thank you for stopping by for the new video!
Is it possible that the valve on/off switch turns itself off? Or did my service tech turn it off after doing a regular maintenance 2 months ago? I turned it on and everything is now working fine.
Probably the service tech. This would be the same as the light switch in your room turning itself on or off.
@@WordofAdviceTV thanks for the reply! I was mostly I guess wondering if these switches generally had some sort of automatic turn off in the event of a problem. Sounds like probably not.
@@jasonkarlsven5216 Ah thats what you meant. Apologies for the misunderstanding. No, the gas valve does not have any auto shut off features. At least that I know of.
43 years experience and I tell all new techs, if you can get a stuck closed valve to open by tapping it, it can also get stuck in the OPEN position when the call for heat expires, allowing gas to continue to flow. NEVER LEAVE A FURNACE OPERATIONAL IF THAT OCCURS. Shut the gas supply and get a new valve. Forget the lawsuit. You could be criminally charged if there is a tragedy. Your customer would rather be cold than dead.
100% agree I told my apprentice the same if you need to tap it in order to make it work is good to help heat up a space while watching it but don't leave it running and turn off the gas and remove w from the board and then get a new gas valve
I haven't hear of this happening before but it does makes sense. Definitely something to pay attention to, thank you for the warning!
@@jonl2996 & bills6946 absolutely 👍. I was a first responder / HVAC service technician for the gas utility in STL for 35 years and the scenario you mentioned happens more often than the average HVAC technician might think. Most of the time they would come in as a typical gas odor at the furnace but more than a couple times I would find that furnace door blown across the basement.
One tip I have for Goodman furnaces. They have a silly design where the wire the condensate pressure switch in line with the gas valve common. This will not throw a pressure switch code and the ignitor will still come on like everything is ok even if the switch is open for whatever reason
Good to know! Thank you for mentioning that!
My gas valve is clicking repeatedly. Flames come on and then it shuts off after about 5 seconds. Kind of sounds like the valve is opening and closing repeatedly. Is it a good idea to replace the valve? I don't want to aimlessly throw parts at it. Thanks for any help
This sounds more like a flame sensor issue. Have you tried cleaning the flame sensor? If yes, then next I would suggest this video: ua-cam.com/video/-QKHz1Mv9Ew/v-deo.htmlsi=_8tUOzxwnmRogv57
I don't think I explained correctly. It's not just clicking on and clicking off. It's clicking multiple times at once rapidly. Like 10 times in 5 seconds
Great job explaining everything 👍👍👍 and your right on congrats lol 😂
Thank you good sir! Haha and good to know that you agree about the congrats bit. 😄

But what if the wires are in a molex connector? Can I unplug it and stick the probes in the connector or does a wire need to remain attached to the gas valve?

PLEASE HELP! I forgot to return the cover when i changed my furnace filter.
I found it off 24 hrs later when i went to see why it was no longer working.
I can’t find the reset switch and it wont do anything but click when i turn the power on
Ah unfortunately the video I made for exactly the problem you are having is not edited yet! Would have been nice to refer you to it. Here are the 10 things I go over, perhaps this will give you some ideas of what to look for:
1. Furnace circuit breaker tripped
2. Furnace power switch off
3. Thermostat batteries weak or dead
4. Bent thermostat pins or loose wires
5. Furnace door switch not fully closed
6. 3 amp fuse burned out
7. Bad transformer
8. Condensate pump or drain pan backed up
9. Furnace is overheating/stuck high limit switch
10. Control board is bad

@@casa_ceballos No problem! I'll try to get it done and posted Saturday or Sunday.
can anyone answer this one I came home from work one day and when I stepped in the house I was hit with a blast of hot air and the inside of my house had to be 300 degrees the furnace had kept running and the high limit switch had failed why didn't the thermostat shut it down this was a few years back but it still bugs me why?
does anyone know why i seem to be getting to much gas from my valve. I did set it with a manometer to 4 inches water column which is what the furnace calls for
What makes you think ur getting too much gas? 2 stage or single stage?
@@lucidgaming1153 flames are bouncing around the outside of the chamber and it's not blow back and single stage. I turned the gas down and it was acting perfect but i had to turn it way down.
@@ronamo111 How old is the furnace?
@@bernardocisneros4402 it is at least 25 years old or more but in pretty good shape
@@ronamo111 Have you cleaned the gas nozzles (spud orifice) with a torch tip cleaning set and the burners with a steel wire brush? Some really old ones from the 1960s you actually clean the burners with a hacksaw blade. I'm sure your burners are not that old.
just get a long neck bic lighter and light it yourself. hahaha
Don't forget that if your furnace has a smart valve with a whole bunch of wires going to it and a code comes up on a flashing LED in the center of the valve that doesn't point to any safety item just go ahead and replace the furnace. Anyone dumb enough to replace a smart valve with another smart valve deserves everything they get. 😂🤣😂🤣
At 35 seconds you say most likely not. But I think you meant to say most likely
Gas valve not opening.... HAMMERTIME
The hammer is the ultimate final boss. 😄
I actually do something similar if it's a really old system and the gas valve is stuck. Just trying to keep them going until the unit can be replaced if that's what they're doing
Thermocouple
Hahaha! Not to Crack it open
Anyone want to take a stab at this one?...
The start up (gas) sequence is so random..
Sometimes it gets to the point of flames igniting.. sometimes only the inducer will kick on and off immediately.. most of the time, it gets to the point of glowing the ignitor, gas valve clicks open and closed immediately with no flame ignition and the entire system shuts down.
I'm stumped..
Blow back sensors are fine
Flame sensor is new
Flame ignitor is new
Pressure switch works fine
Anyone have a clue?
