The deadband settings are key, especially for a more organic and less mechanical feel ... something BIG I don't hear many people talking about with gimbals is don't rely 100% on the machine! Example, when panning, if you don't want the shot to stop with a MECHANICAL feel, then with your arm/hand/body gradually let it fade to a stop. Basically if you want to pan smoothly to 24 inches to your right, then around 20 inches to your right, start to slow down your physical movement so it eases into 24 inch to the right target, maybe even floating a bit past 24 inches. This is a skill to work with the gimbal. Not as tough as a steadicam, but was a huge life changer for me when I realized this approach for making specific gimbal shots feel more organic. It's the same way when braking with a car and pushing the brake pedal .... you can fade into a stop, or you can jam on the brakes and come to a sudden stop. And all that is affected by the sensitivity of the brakes (deadband).
Thanks for this explanation, it has helped me visualise the technique needed to get these smooth shots :)
i have no idea how people use gimble with high deadband, i myself just set it even lower than low, so it can react to any moment i do immediately
@@haroldlauhoyan it's not supposed to react to your movement immediately
I think the biggest problem with DJI Ronin is that their documentation is lacking… poor explanations on most functions. If you research RavenEye it’s pathetic. They don’t even explain the FN Function, how to activate or turn off. It’s just stupid
THIS VIDEO IS SUPER AMAZING, IT MADE SUCH A DRASTIC DIFFERENCE FOR MY SHOTS BRO
Glad to hear it!
Hi Chris. Good tip. Thanks. Do you have a video by any chance on the best auto focus for a sony camera while using a gimbal?
Thank you for this Chris, very helpful. Do you switch off ibis and digital stabilisation when on a gimbal? Is it better to have all stabilisation options on or might they conflict with one another? Thank you! I am off to watch your real estate video now :-)
Cheers Ben! Definitely turn off any camera and lens stabilization, what tends to happen is they are looking to always counter movement and it can mess up your image ever so subtlety
@@chrisbrockhurst Cheers for the quick reply. I have changed the settings on my gimbal since watching this video. Now to disabled IBIS for gimbal use.
Is it also called dead zone?
I'm using my Lumix S1H with Dji RS3Pro. As I turn slowly to left or right the camera moves (swings) in the opposite direction. Can the pan mode be locked so the camera moves in real time when I pivot my body for walk through real estate shots around corners? Will a low dead-end setting fixed the problem?
How do I go lower than low ahahahah the one thing I hate about finals is how slow there are
I cant believe how insanely easy and to the point your videos are and are exactly what is lacking in most of the other youtube channels. Extremely informative, precise, well made and easy to watch. This channel needs to be among the top of the crop as far as this style of content is concerned... Thanks a lot Chris for all of these gems.
Appreciate you 🙏🏼
Big question: how can i turn a eg rs2 or rs3 into a 100% manual Controlled Pan like the arri 2axis?
What is the name of app?
I totally agree 💯
Chris this is literally the answer to my late night just last night.. I was trying different settings and I was under the impression that the deadband was needed to be set to low to be smoother and I thought of changing everything else except that!!! And now this video came out!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!
Very welcome!
Medium is the best setting. High doesn't react soon enough and low takes too long to react. Thank me later.
why does it look like you are picking up your gimbal as if its a 2kg dumbell?
Hands up. Who actually knew what deadband was? No cheating!
I thought that referred to the Rolling Stones... (but seriously, this was extremely helpful, thanks, Chris).
@@quirkworks4076 😂😂😂
Nope, wanted it but didn't know it was called that.... But I'm 63 and started with 16mm
I knew
I knew what it is, only from gaming on Xbox in the fortnite days lol.
Great video. I mostly use the R2 system on movies and am constantly adjusting my deadband - its the secret sauce of the ronin systems. One quick note is that I'll often run a higher deadband on my tilt axis than my pan, and helps to take out footsteps, especially for running and chase sequences.
I'm trying to find 'deadband' on the menu for the Ronin RS2, haven't found it yet. Does it go by another name? The RS2 uses terms like smoothness and speed and stiffness, corresponding to each axis.
Oops, I found it in the Raveneye software, under user profile.
So when you walk do you use the tilt axis? I thought is better to set it to pan follow only
@@petrub27it depends on the shot and the focal length but I generally need control over tilt axis so I keep it on.
Deadband set to high. Ninja walk set to high
For Ronin gimbals, if you are in a situation where you need to be shooting continuously, you need to tilt a lot and you don't need the wheel for anything else, I'd recommend using it for panning. With a bit of practice, you can really get smooth shots with it while not having to worry about how you hold the gimbal if you were in the pan-tilt-follow mode.
huge huge super thaaaaaaaaaaaaankssssssss!!!
Thanks for the great video! Im struggling to find these settings in the app? Is it found under motor parameters, as i dont have the same settings as you. Using the RS4 pro.
What grip do you have for the RS3? I’m looking to get that wide grip setup you have.
Nice tips - thanks for sharing (appreciate just how long it takes to produce that 5 minute sound-bite)! Now I totally get that it's good for every operator to know their gear intimately but wouldn't it be nice if DJI gave us the option to create profiles in the phone-app from which to automagically load up our preferences dependent on the shot?
My DJI rs 3 gamble motor not working showing error code 104 please help me
Great information Chris! Which handles are you using with the RS3 and do you ever use the suitcase handle that came with the gimble? Any other accessories you have added?
Video coming on the gear soon! But these are the DJI grips
Hi. Chris, what about the ibis in the sony cameras. Do you leave it on active, standard or out? Thanks
On a gimbal always turn it off
revisited this before filming Kygo last night and mannn it allows you to focus on the shot and not "will it be smooth"... bc it will, just walk and watch the shot and your steps and these settings allow the rest. whew. big thx
This was incredibly informative. I will now go and correct my gimbal. Just because of how sharp the movement is, I usually settle for handheld camerawork. We will see if that changes now.
It will make a huge difference!
Very instructive tutorial, however, it will also depend what kind of video you’re shooting. Let’s say you’re recording a music video where it requires the gymbal to catch all those fast movements. Maybe wouldn’t be the best configuration!
Just as I thought with my Old Ronin SC the deadband was set to hight. But I have never actually calibrated a gimble before must check Thank for the video man
Do you recommend turning off the steadyshot when using the Ronin?
When I use it with steady shoot on I feel like when I do parallax moves, it does some weird little jumps.
Hey Chris one question this video is for Real Estate you should have in 30 or 60 frames and slower to 24
you LEGITIMATELY just changed my life. from using an Xbox controlled for flight sim, i always put low deadbands and somehow applied the same logic here lol. widened the deadbands and ghr gimbal works like I've always wanted it to!
Welcome 🤗
@@chrisbrockhurst What is the name of app?
On the ZY APP I have « Follow rate », « control rate » and « smooth deg » anyone know which settings match the settings on the video? Thx
@Chrisbrockhurst Thank you for this tutorial bro! Can you make one on how to do a parallax shot that DOESN’T involve walking?
I shoot real estate and I’m always seeing those nice orbiting shots of lamps/tabletop decor, and misc. furniture but it’s in a tight space that you couldn’t really walk to make the shot.
Hi Chris, question: I've just purchased a ronin 4D. I've used some gimbals in the past with about the settings you describe. Now with the ronin 4D like for real estate when you go into a room and pan from left to right the lens doesnt come straight level back again, it stays slightly tilted to one side. Sadly enought the Ronin 4D you can only adjust deadband and speed, not all the other settings lik in the app. I contacted DJI and they told me I have to set speed high and deadband high, but then again you only have a gimbal usable for more sport /action shots.
Is it also like that on the RS3 that the camera doenst fully level out when using high deadband and slow setting? thx
All I can say is wow.....This has changed my life. I been using gimbals since the ronin M first came out and i could never get any gimbals to be butterly smooth until now.....THANK YOU SIR
Glad I could help!
Hi Christ, much appreciate the video. Does the following steps are also the same for the other modes like PTF and FPV? Thanks
Great video, great info! Is there a way to do a manual horizonal leveling? I know for the older DJI, the feature existed, but I can't find it now.
Those are interesting handles you have attached to your Ronin.
@ChrisBrockhurst Loved this video! Helped greatly!! I wonder where I can find the small horshoe XLR mixer you have mounted in this video? Tried searching everywhere online and can't find it.
Does zhiyun gimbal m2 and dji mini serise have these settings? Never used a dslr gimbal but have experience in using dji osmo
Am i the only one to see a difference of speed on the reaction of the gimbal ?
Because this is one issue I have with my RS3, if the deadband is in "high" he will not react so easily, but when it reacts, it looks like it is trying to catch up oO
And this regardless of the speed setting :/
I definitely didn't see this on my old Weebill-S...
The other complain I have is the overhaul stability. The is an almost permanemt wooble on my roll axis...
I tried everything, With and without IBIS, different speed, dandband, smoothness, strenght, stiffness etc...
I also go the twist handles to have a wider grip to it.
I am in constant contact with DJI for about a year and they changed me twice the gimbal, for a brand new... Same issue...
I followed all your setting though the last one is not clear setting super smooth. Dial speed 20 and dial smoothness 15. I don't know if the smoothness should be higher. I would like the smoothest footage possible.
Thank you very much for this awesome tip. I didnt knew about this, very helpful for tiniest details that I was always strugling to capture like bride and groom rings closeup. Can't wait to put this on practice!😍
Hi! Subscribed to your channell! Great Video Studio!
So in doing these settings to match yours, I have my rs3 pro on a gimbal ring and it still likes to drift left and right some when walking in a straight line. any suggestions? Also, to add to it, if i hold the gimbal ring perfectly straight forward and center, the camera never really wants to be in the center position, i keep having to hit the re-center button. Thoughts? Thanks!
i almost throw my new rs4 ,you should be working be dji tutorial!thank you
Question, would you suggest disabling stabilization from the camera if using gimbal?
You legend mate, knew about deadband in context but you explained it perfectly, I have one question, how do you mitigate the side to side movement whilst walking backwards on the pan axis?
I also found I can hold the trigger which locks the axis and then do small pans and tilts with the joystick. I recently did a job where I filmed a show on a telephoto lens walking around and this worked really well!
seems how my gimbal don't have simple low medium high....what would be a good number between 0-9 for deadband?
So useful, thanks very much!!
willl this help with my panning problem, if i use it and try to rotate my hand right or left its starting slow, but suddenly makes a fast unnatural pan, if you know what i mean
are these deadband settings slider only available per app...or can i find it on the gimbal itself? thanks a lot for this video! Very helpful!
If another youtuber did this, this would've been 15 minutes.
Running into this issue where my gimbal is stuck in sleep mode. Tried turning off the gimbal, when turning it on, no sound is made. The screen shows the moon icon. Just got the rs3 today too
But if you don’t used app u can’t change settings ?? 😅
I just broke the 666 like count. Does that make me anti-satanic??? 😳😳😳
I'm confused. You said set tye dead-end to low then you turned around and set it to high. Was that only for stationary shots and slider movements?
I find it harder to do those static shots rather than movement shots any tips for that? Like a pan rotate on a single object. Not sure if I should change the deadband to react more else my arms would start to tremble too for trying to maintain the steadiness.
Is this gimble suitable with Sony a7iii and lens 50mm 1.8?
do you need to have the APP open while using the gimbal or just in set up?
i do not have that option anywhere on the app...absolutely no sign of that page at all!!
Love how well you explained this video ! Thank youu
You're using the word "literally" incorrectly.
Should I turn off camera stabilisation off?
I’m going to try this to day on a music video thanks
This is the very thing I am trying to achieve slow steady smooth video not catching my footsteps.
Another super helpful video - I’ve had the RS3 for a while and haven’t changed this so excited to test it out later - Thanks Chris!!
Welcome!
Anyone know what XLR unit is on the camera?
whats about the endpoint i have diffenrent number ?
why does everyone shoot video with sony? im looking to get the lumix s5ii what do you think
Hi ! what dual grip do you use in your rs3? :) thanks !
Nice info. Thank you.
Why are you wearing a woolly hat indoors? Great video!
Dear , Kindly tell the orbit follow mode setting. Pl
Thanks for a clear and concise guide :)
Great video, very informative!🔥
How do you change the settings of the joystick?
brooooooo you just saved me so much headache
Hey Chris, What mic do you have on that setup in this video?
Thanks for the awesome tips! That's exactly what i need for more cinematic footage 🙏
Great advice. Never realized this.
sir why dji rs3 mini slightly tilting in fpv mode.
DJI OHM3 has no deadband.. What to do?
Does same setting applies in vertical mode
Great Video!!!
Thanks!
Thx for the information about the deadband. It rly helped me out!
Happy to help!
How do you approach orbital shots?
This was the exact subject I was trying to find info on! Commenting for thanks!
What settings shud I use for cars
control means the joystick?
wow wow wow thank you man1!!!!!!!!!!!!
well I knew this. So your wrong
zhijun crane 2 didnt have it
Thank you so much Chris, I have my first real estate shooting tomorrow and this really helped, cheers!
i CANT BELIEIVE THIS . Gimbal is super smooth now !
This is awesome and straight to the point. Just got my a RS3 Mini, and was struggling with the movement. But now it's all perfect. Thanks!
App for rs3 in android
Nice video. Just got my rs3 and i will do that, thanks. One question only. Doesnt the supersmooth mode reduce like the life of the gimbal in order to make it ever smoother?
This is great stuff. My gimbal doesn't have a deadband setting, so I shoot at a high framerate and slow it down in post to get slow movement. Of course, whether this is useful depends on the subject...
A few seconds of your video is all it took for me to subscribe!
Thank you for all your knowledge and such a clear explanation.
Go deadband! 😂
