Nothing wrong with going on adventures but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pack for an emergency, ALWAYS! I always take water, my phone, waterproofs, a fishing knife, string, and plenty of nibbles, and I don't actually go far alone. I learned the hard way in Arizona to ALWAYS take emergency supplies with you. If I was going far I would take a festival fire and block fuel too. .. I always have tea bags, powered milk and trail mix anyway... Nothing more scary than being alone broken down in the desert ... That was 1996/7 ... Since then I have always carried water everywhere...

I watch a lot of these types of stories and this is by far the craziest, nail biter I think I've ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and there were so many plot twists.. like did he really dangle off a cliff and pull himself back up with 2 broken ribs? Not to mention the other guy trekking as far as they did with a head injury slowly drifting into delirium. Their determination to survive is admirable.

Gunshots, high voltage electrocution, blown off side of mountain by artillery, car accident versus semi truck, car breakdown in middle of nowhere, stranded in wilderness, etc. Each time I've remembered talking to God saying that I can't die, cause my mom, dad, girlfriend/fiancee needed me. Each time I felt like I couldn't go on any longer I felt like I had been slapped through my entire body, felt warm all over, pain subsided and heard a voice telling me "DON'T QUIT!". I don't know if it was God, a deceased friend/family member or just my will to live.

A few ughs with this episode.
So, there is this emergency bag, that the narrator and Gary describe as "little in supplies" and "pretty limited". Really? A large tarp, TWO sleeping bags, towels, first-aid kit, food, rope, and we learn later some flares. Gawd, what is that they are wanting . . . a second airplane?
Before that, when Gary is checking the radio, and gets no indication it turns 'on' after using the switch, did he not think that perhaps it was just wiring from the battery that was pulled loose in the crash. Was it not worth a check? Later they said he was restoring an older plane, but clearly having nothing to do with the mechanics.
Did they have no matches in that emergency kit, surely so, but if not . . . the battery again? It could have been used to produce the heat/ignition for a fire. Was there not enough dead wood around that could have been dried out enough if necessary by using some material from inside the plane? Building a fire, and keeping it going, would have created smoke that could have been seen from a long distance during the day and the fire from overhead at night.
Then the bear part. The narrator mistankingly says they are 'up' wind, and therefore the bear doesn't detect them. Wrong. Had they been up wind, he'd have quickly smelled them, as the wind would have been going from them toward the bear. Obviously, they were downwind.
Then jumping in the river, really . . . out of fear of a bear that isn't on your heels? Not afraid of a little hypothermia? At least look for a spot and way to cross with limited soaking involved.
Well, without these mishaps and miscues, we wouldn't have as many stories to watch.

What I don't understand is how a native Alaskan, and a Texan that's been there 2 years don't have a firearm on them? Everyone I know from Alaska carries a firearm, flying or not. Hell even here I VT most will carry a firearm when going out into the woods. It's just confusing why there wasn't a proper survival bag inside the aircraft?

Do you think if they had fire, they should have kept it lit and juste stayed out rather than trying to hike out? Would the fire keep the bears away?

I think keeping a jar of peanut butter in your survival bag is a good idea. Aside from the sugars and protein, it can possibly mask the taste of other crap you might have to eat. For example, Kill a rabbit, cook the meat and put a little peanut butter on it... probably still gross but I am sure it makes it a little more tolerable. 😆 Perhaps bring a thing of table salt and pepper as well. 😅😅

I couldn't get beyond feeling agitated that they were irresponsible enough to leave without the most important basic survival items they'd needed.
There's one reason to keep a small plane prepared for the worst on each and every trip, and one reason alone: Gravity. That's all the encouragement one should need.
But this situation is well beyond that. They're In Alaska, in an area they've recognized as the last frontier. Not only is it untouched wilderness, it's also got the country's greatest saturation of brown bears- an animal whose encounters humans rarely survive.
For the veteran pilot to claim that they left their cell phones behind because they weren't going to be gone long (and subsequently also didn't have any self defense firearms or weapon materials, nor bear spray) is like a seasoned bungee jumper who usually leaps sites like the Grand Canyon deciding that they don't need to double check their clips or use the double reenforcements that they usually employ because this leap is much shorter, this time they're only jumping the Empire State building.
It's shocking that the pilot in charge didn't bring up the fact that he learned a hard lesson and now only flies if he has all important basic survival needs. Instead they focused on the harrowing survival journey when it could have been cut shorter if a Few simple precautions were taken-especially with making sure that portable communication tools were on board, charged up and ready for use.
It's the massive brown bear in the room that neither are talking about and I find it very confusing.

Brown bear is more similar to the black bear than the Grizzly . The Grizzly gets much larger. You have a chance fighting off a block or brown bear, but no chance with a Grizzly. Your best plan would be to run down a steep hill. They can run 35 mph up hill but much slower running down as their front legs are shorter than the rear. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t go into nor fly over bear country without a gun.

    • @juliehunter9806

Actually brown bear and grizzly are names for the same species, but depending on location they are called one or the other. Location actually influences the size of the bear d/t food sources. Interesting about running down a hill though! Very cool.
