Pool Neil, he had asked for a guided tour for his birthday but his son said NO. Blake wanted to do it HIS way. Even after the trip started the dad was hesitant to go, but Blake pushed on. If you really want to give someone a birthday present, give them what THEY want not what YOU THINK they should have.

    • @moriah1394
      @moriah1394 Рік тому +58

Yep. Wouldn’t want Blake as a dr either if he couldn’t adjust his wants to information in front of him and doesn’t do better research. OMG…dad was still healing from ankle injury?! Early spring on a river filled with melting ice/snow has been known to be dangerous for ….ever. ALso, son says he couldn’t have faced his family…that was the first thing he said recalling not seeing his father come up from the water…he has a bit of an issues with being self absorbed. Would hope this humbled him and didn’t seem like it at the opening when he said with intense inflection he’d “Still” not go on a guided tour…he could learn something but noooooooo. His dad said “Just bad luck” or rather the actor did….that is enabling. Anyway at least they cried..maybe there was some humility gained and it is good to have their experience shared for others to learn from.

@TheRealSwampOperator it doesn't matter. Blake sat on his ass for 5 days and he made it to the spot he ended up at in one day. Even if Neil and Blake decided to walk together it wouldn't have taken them more then 3 days. Also if they would have stayed put they could have built a better shelter, traps, fished etc. Neil gave his son both the lighter and knife and he didn't do anything with it except save himself with fire. Atleast let your dad keep the knife for bushcraft if that was supposed nto be his plan. It was just pure damn luck and a miracle they survived. They would have had better odds waiting a week together till someone noticed them missing or waited 2 weeks until the actual real rafters started coming in to do the guides. They would have been found if they stayed near the river.

What an amazing story of the depth of love between a father and son. I could mentally follow Blake along with his father, and then especially when he had to leave him to get help. I knew how I would have felt had I been forced into a decision like that. I think I would have gave my father one of the biggest hugs I ever gave him, and have to wipe the tears from my eyes as I departed and watched him as I walked away.
The suspense of this story was incredible, and when you realize that it's something that really happened to a father and son, and not fiction it grips you. The look on his father's face when the helicopter pilot aroused him was wonderful and then when they finally reunited, wow, such an amazing story!

You know what, besides almost dying and everything that went wrong, it’s really cool that the dude just wanted to hang out w his dad and take him on a trip for his pop’s bday, just him and his dad bonding. That’s sweet. Not a lot of kids want to do that with or for their parents.
As life progresses and you start to age, your kids suddenly become adults and you’re not prepared for it, then they leave you and forget about you bc they’re busy leading their own lives and you’re no longer a major part of their world. You’re reduced to this minor, nearly insignificant role. It’s lonely when you’re in your golden years. Hurts my soul thinking about it. Def not something I look forward to.

As a uni student I would sometimes go a couple of weeks without contact from my family. My parents and I are immigrants so I very rarely see my grandparents for very short periods of time. It is so important to have some sort of emergency plan, a worse case scenario survival kit you can have on your person at the very least. Emergency gps beacon, some flares if you can, space blankets for warmth and signalling, a tin with hooks, fire starter, paracord bracelets, whatever you can keep on your person. I spent time in the Alaskan bush as a kid, we had to take a survival class and pass survival and swimming tests to graduate. It's no joke up there.

@WonkaaVision Not if he had it tethered to him like a smart person would. I take a HAM radio and emergency antennae out with me and it's physically connected to me. It makes no sense for it to be anywhere else. It was indeed foolish for them to go out without any way to communicate. There's no excuse for it.

Virginia Solomon dude I completely agree.. I’m scrolling down trying to find this exact comment. Why the fuck would they go into the wilderness without any means of communication.. just soo dumb that I almost don’t feel bad for them

You mean like before c 1992 when cells phones came along? Some people like adventure, out there cells wouldn't work anyway. I don't think he should have taken a 65 year old with him tho.

Moral of story: Prepardness! Absolute survival items strapped to your persons @ all times including gun, duplicate gear spread among several bags, cell phone, SAT phone, Beacon Transponder, GPS unit, standard compass, maps, Float Plan conveyed to others, MRE's, Flare Gun & several flares, and...@ least 4x Pow-Pow's with plenty of ammo!!! Remington? Mossberg? Ruger? Oh...and "Common Sense!" And Cow Bell...I gotta have more Cow Bell!

No doubt! I am a firm believer in overkill when it comes to preparedness. When I set out nine years ago on a three week Western U.S. trek with my nephew I took so much stuff. Ended up using less than half but had the peace of mind that if anything happened we could survive several weeks if need be.

I use to have a friend like that. She would ALWAYS plan things for me that SHE would enjoy. Sometimes I wasn’t happy, but it was what she wanted for me. She was a good friend, but she had a control issue. It took years for her to realize it, then she finally began to change.

Me and my father were in a similar situation some years ago
lucky for us, we weren't in the wilderness and we were able to walk home unharmed (except for shock and a mild hypothermia)
all I can say is the strong current of the river and the cold water can be very frightening experience, and I also learned not to kayak on the river, only on the lake

Didnt they say at the beginning of the show that they didnt pack a radio or phone?.
Why not have a separate radio and phone in a ziplock attached to the life jacket?. I have a separate radio with a flint rod, bick lighter, small but powerful flashlight, lightweight but expensive multi tool with a blade sharpener on it. I keep that tethered to me by paracord when Im out on a lake, paracord cinched down around the bags and then rubber banded, all zipped away in my life jacket. Really doesn’t take too much forethought. The other pocket has a folded up thermo blanket. Can use the multitool to fashion an animal defence weapon...with the two paracord bracelets I wear, which has a compass, flint, and whistle built into the clips. So if I lost all my gear that stuff is on my pretty much regardless.

    • @Eternal_Soul1

Why not a bunch of separate fires?. Id make a ring of fires around me encased around stones. Big fires, hey even if one goes out thats better chances and circular predator protection.

Revisiting my childhood nostalgia. So much knowledge. I just imagine how many were people not that lucky. This shows how much we are cut off from nature due to technological developments though in many areas its necessary. As a results we should learn from these heroes.
